The ten chapters in Beyond Heterochrony: The Evolution of Development explore the evolution of biological development from many different perspectives. They present their research and consider all sides of the often controversial concept of heterochrony without intellectual limits.
In looking beyond heterochrony, this book attends to a variety of explanations for evolutionary development. The chapters present theoretical and practical approaches with real data, using examples from both extant and extinct forms of animal and plant life to present refreshing and at times divergent perspectives on the subject.
Each chapter offers a substantive and original contribution to the literature, with case studies that explore the developmental basis of morphological evolution in a unique way. They address a number of issues and provide real data on which their conclusions rest, as well as the phylogenetic context of evolutionary interpretations.
The book includes thorough analysis of the ontogeny and phylogeny of shape-for decades the very heart of studies of heterochrony-and also presents novel approaches with new hypotheses. The hypotheses considered are as diverse as their analytical methodologies: each goes beyond heterochrony in a different way and in so doing, steers the discussion of the evolution of development in fascinating new directions.

This book's pages are so thin they rip at almost every turn of the page. The publisher took a stab at trying to keep college students from reselling their books by making this one rip to shreds as they use it. This item has to be put in a three ring binder. Dont buy this version get the bound version.

This book was required for one of my college classes. It provides the same information that is taught in high school but in a much better format. I liked this book so much I have kept it for my personal library (and no I'm not some math/physics freak).

Basic physics book packed with information, diagrams, photos, exercises and some answers at the back of the book to make sure you are on track. Interesting text because it touches on how physics relates to almost everything.

This book uses principles developled by the University of Washington Physics Education Group. The inquiry method frees the instructor from the board, and asks students to learn on their own by facing their own misconceptions.
Science Education as it Should Be.......2002-01-18
I love this set of books. These books require students to learn not by lecture, but by doing labs and explaining their results.
These books certainly are not appropriate for high school students (the age level I teach), but they are the perfect resource for their teacher. A high school student needs very clear instructions and needs reassurance that he is on the right track. These books are not clear enough for these students.
However, as a teacher, I can adapt the material, write my own labs, and give the students something that is on their level.
I've done the electricity unit, as a student, and realized that there was quite a lot about circuitry that I don't know. I was a Physics major, but I never truly understood the material, I only thought I did. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other units and finding out what else I don't understand!
The other useful feature of these books is the cost. The labs use only very inexpensive equipment. For someone like me in a small, rural school, this is a godsend! In a few years, I hope to develop my program to the point that my students will get a good, high-level education, and low cost labs help make this possible sooner.

This book, designed to encourage active and collaborative learning in the physical chemistry classroom, is a collection of group activities (ChemActivities) that can accompany any physical chemistry text. Intended to accompany one semester of the full-year physical chemistry course, it incorporates new methods for teaching chemistry, reflecting current research on how students learn.
These ChemActivities take a guided inquiry approach to the material, which teaches students how to think like scientists, rather than simply memorizing important conclusions arrived at by great scientists of the past. Students develop a strong conceptual understanding and appreciation of the material by carefully observing new situations, constructing logical conclusions based on these observations, and discussing the merits of their conclusion with peers.
There are two books in this series: Physical Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry: Atoms, Molecules, and Spectroscopy and Physical Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry: Thermodynamics. Publishing the ChemActivities in two separate volumes allows them to reflect the typical division of content in a full-year physical chemistry course, where one semester is devoted to traditional thermodynamics and another semester to modern quantum mechanics. Separating the two volumes allows instructors to select the volume appropriate for their course.
- The web site includes a section on kinetics that matches the format of the ChemActivities. Putting this material online as well as in the Thermodynamics book allows instructors to teach the material in either semester of the physical chemistry course.
- Clearly labeled scientific "Models" appear throughout each ChemActivity in bulleted and illustrated formats. These explanations of scientific theories help students develop their conceptual understanding of the material.
- "Focus Questions" appear before each "Model" and serve as a primer for students, preparing them for the material in the ChemActivity.
- "Critical-Thinking Questions" appear after each "Model" and ask students to explore ideas in a number of ways. Students might be required to explain a concept, draw a molecule, complete a table, or write an explanation about a topic to another student. This multi-faceted approach addresses different learning styles, helps solidify a student's comprehension, and reveal areas of weak understanding.
- "Information" sections include background material, illustrated with figures, on the "Models" presented.
- "Exercises" follow "Models" and test students' problem-solving ability.

Children ask, "Why is the sky blue?" but the question also puzzled Plato, Leonardo, and even Newton, who unlocked so many other secrets. The search for an answer continued for centuries; in 1862 Sir John Herschel listed the color and polarization of sky light as "the two great standing enigmas of meteorology." In Sky in a Bottle, Peter Pesic takes us on a quest to the heart of this mystery, tracing the various attempts of science, history, and art to solve it. He begins with the scholars of the ancient world and continues through the natural philosophers of the Enlightenment, the empiricists of the scientific revolution, and beyond. The cast of characters includes Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Kepler, Descartes, Euler, Saussure, Goethe, Rayleigh, and Einstein; but the protagonist is the question itself, and the story tells how we have tried to answer it.
Pesic's odyssey introduces us to central ideas of chemistry, optics, and atomic physics. He describes the polarization of light, Rayleigh scattering, and connections between the appearance of the sky and Avogadro's number. He discusses changing representations of the sky in art, from new styles of painting to new pigments that created new colors for paint. He considers what the sky's nighttime brightness might tell us about the size and density of the universe. And Pesic asks another, daring, question: Can we put the sky in a bottle? Can we recreate and understand its blueness here on earth? This puzzle, he says, opens larger perspectives; questions of the color and brightness of the sky touch on secrets of matter and light, the scope of the universe in space and time, the destiny of the earth, and deep human feelings.

An History of How Science Happened and What It Can Mean for Us.......2007-09-29
Mr. Pesic has written a wonderful book about the history of a common phenomenon - the quest to understand why the sky is blue. At first, this seems like a question that doesn't need answering. Everone knows the sky is supposed to be blue!
But as Mr. Pesic notes, the answer depends upon an understanding of modern physics. I liked his description of how scientists began to realize that they didn't understand why the sky was blue. After all, as Mr. Pesic notes, a question cannot be answered until it has been asked. If we all followed a similar path, our lives would be more tranquil: What do we really know? What do we presume to know? What don't we know?
Terrifically intelligent read.......2007-02-27
One could read this book as a day in the life of the sky with a large thermals of interesting scientific hisotry shooting upwards for effect. It is well written and for anyone interested in scientifc methodology the vignettes of past geniuses make arresting reading. Nearly all teh late Enlightemnt greats and early modern scientists make substantial appearances. The idiosyncratic lengths the went to to test hypotheses, designe experiments and damge the opposition are both instructional and striking ina world used to computer simulations and technology. If anything is is teh bare briliant simplicity of their thinkign, beutifuclly reconstructed, that lends this book an inspirational tone. Definitely one to pass onot to your older children if their interest in science is flagging or, hopefully, burgeoning.
A Very Intriguing Story.......2006-06-30
Simply put, this book is about human efforts in trying to understand why the daytime clear sky is blue. In the earliest parts of the book, ancient thought on this issue is discussed; hence, the arguments are more philosophical in nature, as one would expect. As the book progresses, more and more recent, and hence more technical, arguments are presented. Finally, the latter part of the main text involves the latest, fairly detailed scientific explanations for the blueness of the sky. The prose is kept simple and technical arguments are very clearly explained. Over 40 pages of notes are included at the end of the book where the reader can find references and more detailed explanations for the some of the material given in the main text. Finally, the book contains descriptions of simple experiments that one can try at home - experiments that are meant to illustrate some of phenomena described in the book. Adequately illustrated with useful diagrams, this book would be of interest mainly, I believe, to science buffs.
Blue skies, nothing but blue skies.......2006-04-27
This isn't exactly light reading, but it is very readable. Peter Pesic demonstrates an artful ability to describe the history or scientific thought by focusing on one particular issue. In so doing, he educates the reader on how some very great writers, philosophers and early scientists approached the world. Never pedantic, Pesic displays an amazingly wide source of knowledge cutting across many fields. I am enjoying it thus far.
An excellent description of how science happens.......2006-03-06
One could almost use this book for the central organization of history of science course, and I think the students would understand the true nature of science better than in other presentations. (The book even includes some experiments.) It shows science in the making, from the earliest philosophers to experimentalists and theoreticians, emphasizing the somewhat rocky and cicuitous road to "truth". Clearly, the obvious is not always so, even to the best of minds. Anyway, to understand the color of the sky requires a lot of physical and chemical knowledge that the author slowly develops in a non-mathematical way. He also becomes a Renaissance man, talking about more than just the science involved.
