    Book Description

The Baltic Sea and its coastal zones have been intensively utilised for centuries. Settlements, industry, fisheries and trade are still concentrated in the coastal zones. Concurrently, the coast is a web of sensitive and highly valuable ecosystems which suffer from ongoing degradation. Increasing demands and pressures on coastal ecosystems require integrated coastal zone management. This book reflects the current state and problems of coastal ecosystems in the entire Baltic region, highlighting obstacles and future solutions for integrated management.

            Book Description

During recent decades, large-scale effects of pollution on marine estuaries and even entire enclosed coastal seas have become apparent. One of the first regions where this was observed is the Baltic Sea, whereby the appearance of anoxic deep basins, extensive algal blooms and elimination of top predators like eagles and seals indicated effects of both increased nutrient inputs and toxic substances.
This book describes the physical, biochemical and ecological processes that govern inputs, distribution and ecological effects of nutrients and toxic substances in the Baltic Sea. Extensive reviews are supplemented by budgets and dynamic simulation models.
This book is highly interdisciplinary and uses a systems approach for analyzing and describing a marine ecosystem. It gives an overview of the Baltic Sea, but is useful for any marine scientist studying large marine ecosystems.

              Description:
Allelopathy, the release of extracellular compounds that inhibit the growth of other microorganisms, may be one factor contributing to the formation and/or maintenance of cyanobacterial blooms. We investigated the allelopathic effects of three cyanobacterial species (Nodularia spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Anabaena lemmermannii) that frequently form mass-occurrences in the Baltic Sea. We exposed monocultures of three phytoplankton species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Rhodomonas sp. and Prymnesium parvum) to cell-free filtrates of the three cyanobacteria, and quantified allelopathic effects with cell counts. We also investigated the role of the growth phase of cyanobacteria in their allelopathy, by comparing the effects of an exponential and a stationary phase culture of N. spumigena. All tested cyanobacteria inhibited the growth of Rhodomonas sp., but none of them affected P. parvum. The effects on T. weissflogii were more variable, and they were amplified by repeated filtrate additions compared to a single filtrate addition. N. spumigena was more allelopathic in exponential than in stationary growth phase, whereas the culture filtrate was more hepatotoxic in stationary phase. Hepatotoxins were thus probably not involved in the allelopathic effects, which is also indicated by the allelopathic properties of the non-toxic A. flos-aquae and A. lemmermannii. The results demonstrate that the common Baltic cyanobacteria affect some coexisting phytoplankton species negatively. Allelopathy may therefore play a role in interspecific competition and contribute to cyanobacterial bloom maintenance.

                Description:
On marine rocky shores, macroalgal herbivory is often intense, such that the cascading effects of fish predation may contribute to the control of algal communities. To estimate the magnitudes of top-down and bottom-up control on a macroalgal community, we manipulated the access of carnivorous fish to macroalgal colonization substrates, as well as nutrient availability, at two sub-littoral depths. There were three levels of fish manipulation: natural fish community, no fish and the enclosure of one common species, the perch, Perca fluviatilis. We found a clear cascade effect of fish predation on both the total density and several individual species of macroalgae, which was more pronounced in deep than shallow water. The density of the dominant grazers, i.e. snails, increased in nutrient-enriched conditions; perch were inefficient in controlling herbivores, and had therefore no cascading effect on algal densities under such conditions. Although nutrients enhanced the growth of opportunistic algae, herbivores, in the absence of fish, inhibited this response. While algal diversity was higher in shallow than in deep water, the enrichment effect was opposite at the two depths with lowered diversity in the shallows and increased at depth. Our results indicate that fish predation is an efficient regulator of meso-herbivores and that its effect thereby cascades onto the producer trophic level such that both perennial and opportunistic algae benefit from the presence of fish. This cascade effect is probably stronger at depth where predation efficiency is less disturbed by wave motion.

                  Description:
This study focused on effects from Monoporeia affinis reworking and ventilation activities on benthic fluxes and mineralization processes during a simulated bloom event. The importance of M. affinis density for benthic solute (O"2, @SNO"2^-+NO"3^-, NH"4^+ and HPO"4^2^-) fluxes and sediment reactivity (mobilization of NH"4^+ and HPO"4^2^-) following additions of organic material to the sediment surface was experimentally investigated using sediment-water and closed sediment (jar) incubations. Three different densities of M. affinis were used to resemble a low, medium and high density situation (1300, 2500 and 6400 ind. m^-^2, respectively) of a natural amphipod community. The degradation of phytodetritus (Tetraselmis sp., 5 g C m^-^2) added to the sediment surface was followed over a period of 20 days. Benthic solute fluxes of O"2, @SNO"2^-+NO"3^- and NH"4^+ were generally progressively stimulated with increasing number of M. affinis, while no such correlation was found for HPO"4^2^-. Solute fluxes were initially enhanced 1 to 2 days after the addition of phytodetritius, caused by mineralization of the most labile organic material and a food-stimulated irrigation by the amphipods. There was no effect from the activity of M. affinis on total denitrification (Dtot=Dn+Dw) or denitrification utilizing nitrate from coupled nitrification/denitrification (Dn) for any of the densities examined. Denitrification utilizing overlying water nitrate (Dw) was only about 10% of Dtot. Dw was significantly enhanced for the highest M. affinis density investigated. The reactivity of the sediment decreased progressively with increasing density of M. affinis and with time of the experiment. However, enhanced ammonium production at least 6 days after the organic addition indicated excretion of N-containing organic compounds by M. affinis. In conclusion, large spatial and temporal variations in density of M. affinis may be of significant importance for benthic solute fluxes and overall mineralization of organic material in Baltic Sea sediments.

                    Description:
Physiological performance (feeding, metabolism, growth and excretion) across a broad range of salinity (5-30psu) were determined for the benthic amphipod Gammarus oceanicus, a species of marine origin inhabiting brackish waters of the southern Baltic Sea. Feeding rates decreased with increasing salinity, whereas the nutritive absorption efficiency increased. Faeces production and ammonia excretion rates decreased strongly from the lowest to the highest salinity by 60% and 58%, respectively. Increasing salinity was accompanied by a reduction in the metabolic rate from 438J g^-^1 dry wt d^-^1 (5.1mW g^-^1) at 5psu to 245J g^-^1 (2.8mW g^-^1) at 30psu. Individuals were able to maintain a positive energy balance at all experimental salinities. The greatest values for scope for growth were recorded at the environmental salinity (7psu) with a mean of 769J g^-^1 dry wt d^-^1 (8.7mW g^-^1).

                      Description:
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity is a well established biomarker to monitor environmental pollution caused by neurotoxic compounds, such as organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides. The presence of these compounds results in a measurable inhibition of the enzyme. This has been shown for different marine species including blue mussels. Besides pollution, environmental variables may also have a direct or indirect effect on AChE activity, particularly in estuarine and brackish water environments. To assess the impact of abiotic factors on the AChE activity the seasonal course of gill AChE activity was followed in relation to temperature and salinity in Mytilus sp. collected from the south-western Baltic Sea. In addition, the effect of salinity on AChE activity was investigated in an experimental study. The AChE activity showed significant seasonal differences with maximum activities during the summer period and minimum activities in winter. These changes correlate significantly (p <0.001) and positively with water temperature. The experimental exposure of Mytilus sp. to different salinities (5, 7, 16 or 20 psu) resulted in changes in the gill AChE activity. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis revealed that AChE activity was significantly and negatively correlated with salinity (p <0.01). These results clearly demonstrate the need to consider the potential influence of temperature and salinity on AChE activity when applying this biomarker to monitor exposure to and effect of neurotoxic substances in estuarine and brackish water blue mussels.

There is definitely a physicis to quantum entanglement. Cogent analyses on this subject, generated for the intelligent lay public, can be found in either Gregg Braden PhD's "Divine Matrix" or in Dean Radin PhD's "Entangled Minds." However, nothing is without use: "The Quantum Society..." can be used as an ersatz door-stop in a pinch. Bless the author for that.

Another book by Zohar and Marshall I've enjoyed. They, along with others (Fred Alan Wolf comes to mind), attempt to apply science's progress with the human being and their role in society.

G.K. Chesterton's quiet and unassuming little priest has long since joined the pantheon of great literary detectives. Combining the shrewdness of Miss Marple, the insight of Sherlock Holmes and the punctiliousness of Hercule Poirot with the deep and intuitive knowledge of the dark secrets of human nature gained in the confessional, Father Brown is perhaps better equipped than any of them to uncover the startling truth whenever murder, mayhem and mystery stalk society.

It seems that most people after viewing this are purchasing 'The Complete Father Brown' rather than this, and I would too. I've read Father Brown stories and they are all great! You cannot get enough of them, and I recommend getting 'The Complete', rather than 'The Best of'.

I had to read this book for school, and I really enjoyed it! It's a collection of short mysteries which are solved by a "mild, hardworking little priest, named Father Brown." I'm not too crazy about mystery stories normally, but these were great! Father Brown is so awesome! He's one of my favorite characters out of all the books I've read, and that's saying quite a bit. This book is funny at times, and contains lots of small tidbits of wisdom. I highly recommend it.

Divorced with two children ages four and five, television news producer Luther Brown decides to take custody of his son and daughter. Presenting a series of stories and anecdotes, he shows how one African-American father reared two children, how they were equipped with the essentials for becoming contributing members of society, and how through it all, they became and remain best friends. There's no preaching here; nor is it a how-to tome. It is instead the poignant recounting of scenes from the life of a loving father and his kids.

This is a sweet, funny, gentle account of a divorced man who raised his children during a time when it was not highly common for him to do so. It is not preachy at all, simply anecdotes of a time he remembers to have brought him much happiness and joy- raising his children. All men, not just Black, can find inspiration in this story.
