This is a historians, architects, and artists must. Nothing beats this professional, tasteful, and meticulous presentation of Venetian pomp. The only trouble is availability and price.

5 out of 5 stars Venetian Palaces.......2003-02-18

If you appreciate Venetian architecture or any architecture, this is an absolute must have book. I could only rate it five stars, but it deserves a hundred. The best book on Venice in my library of over a dozen, hands down!

5 out of 5 stars informative, comprehensive and visually stunning!.......1999-06-07

A beautifull book that comprehensively covers the history and design of the palazzos of Venice. Particularly noteworthy for many stunning interior shots that are rarely find in other publications, and for the family crests that accompany each building. Excellent text that places each building stylistically, historically and contextually. Good paper stock and type. Makes you want to paint your walls red and cover everything in velvet. Really!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book.......1999-01-06

Love the book. Great photography and easy reading. Venice is poetry and romance and this book captures the essence of that. Highly recommend to all readers and travelers.

5 out of 5 stars Venetian Palaces - A Brief Review.......1997-07-30

The photos found in this book are great. They reveal the details of the sculptures found in various palaces in Venice to the extent that it looks as if the sculpture you are staring at is placed in front of you! On the other hand, the illustration of each palace is preceded by the coat-of-arm of the family that originally owns the palace, except the Doge's Palace. I must admit that the coat-of-arms in parade are rarely shown in those books about Venice and each of them is more than just attractive - they are masterpiece of art and exotic!! P.S. I am most impressed by the photo that features the western facade of the Doge's Palace in Saint Mark Square. It reflects the fact that the Doge's Palace is surely one of the most outstanding palaces in the world!

Take Dante Alighieri's passion for the divine Beatrice, marry it to the picaresque adventuring of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones, hand the whole thing over to the Brothers Grimm for some fine-tuning, and you might end up with something remarkably similar to Lisa St. Aubin de Terán's The Palace. This is the tale of young Gabriele del Campo, a soldier in Garibaldi's army during the 19th-century Italian Risorgimento. While languishing as a prisoner of war, this former stonecutter meets Colonel Vitelli, a nobleman who educates him in the ways of the upper classes. After many near-death experiences in prison, Vitelli and Gabriele are liberated and agree to meet again in Venice, but the colonel never arrives. While he awaits his friend, del Campo begins a rapid transformation from rustic stonecutter to man of means, aided by an astounding run of luck at the gambling tables and a friendly gondolier named Giovanni, who becomes his valet, advisor, and companion.

But what is a fairytale without a love interest? In The Palace, that role is assumed by the phantom figure of Donna Donatella, the daughter of a prominent landowner for whom Gabriele did some work before the war. Though he glimpsed her only once and has never seen her again, del Campo dedicates his life and newfound wealth to creating a palace fit for his dream girl. St. Aubin de Terán invests her story with wit and not a few surprising twists--for in the end, Donna Donatella may well have been supplanted in Gabriele's heart by the very monument he has built to celebrate her. Charming, subtle, and evocative, The Palace is a remarkable novel that explores the mercurial frontier between passion and obsession. --Margaret Prior

    Book Description

One of today's most imaginative and lyrical writers, Lisa St. Aubin de Teran weaves together passion, idealism, and adventures in this mesmerizing fable set against the ornate backdrop of nineteenth-century Italy. The palace is the vision of Gabriele del Campo, a young, idealistic stonemason's apprentice imprisoned for supporting Garibaldi's revolutionary unification of Italy. A poor peasant, he has falen in love at first sight with the rich and beautiful noblewoman Donna Donatella. He yearns to be pulled out of poverty, and dreams of winning Donatellaa's heart and building a palaceworthy of his love.

As del Campo languishes in prison, he takes the first steps toward his dream. His cellmate Colonel Giovanni Vitelli, a nobleman, educates him in the customs of the gentry; meanwhile, in his mind elaborate plans for the palace's construction are already taking shape. Twice escaping execution, del Campo emerges from prison to find wealth as a fearless gambler in the corrupt underworld of Venice. Winning a large estate in Castello at a sinister high-stakes gambling house, Gabriele begins to build the palace of his dreams. At last he might win Donna Donatella's love.

5 out of 5 stars This author you will hear a lot more from.......2000-04-10

Truly a great story. It started out very dickenish like a tale of two cities and then moved in her own style. Whats even better of her writing is the fact is that both the story and characters give the reading a tremendous boast. So many writers today suck because they are only good at one or the other. Her creativity in her writing is truly unique. Its truly a great moving story but the ending dragged on about the palace a little too long. Even still, I think I want to read more of her work since I am now a fan (which I do not become that often).

5 out of 5 stars sensuous prose captures place and passion.......1999-08-02

The craze for Italy following in the wake of Frances Mayes brings this exquisite novel to America at last, nearly three years after its UK appearance. Set in mid-nineteenth century Italy,it's the story of a sculptor's love for a woman called Donna Donatella, and the huge and fabulous house he sets out to build for them to share. Donna makes only the briefest of appearances in the story - out of which Gabriele, the sculptor, conjures a passion and an obsession, which manifests itself in the palace. Lisa St Aubin De Teran's magical prose makes this slow, subtle tale genuinely gripping. Her lush and evocative use of words - she is one of the finest stylists in modern English language fiction - is nevertheless very precise. You will picture Venice clearly in your mind through her remarkably fresh descriptions, and see each stone of the house as it evolves. A book to revel in, to take time with, to read and read again. And to lead you to the seven earlier novels of Lisa St Aubin De Teran.

    Book Description

In September 1879, James McNeill Whistler boarded the Venice-bound night train in Paris. He was forty-five years old and bankrupt. What was to be a three-month stay in the Italian city--long enough to complete a set of twelve etchings--stretched to fourteen months. When Whistler returned to London, he brought back over fifty magnificent etchings and a hundred pastels, far in excess of the original commission. In Palaces in the Night, Margaret F. MacDonald looks at this key period in Whistler's career, examining his unique vision of Venice and his development of the medium of etching. She shows how he reestablished himself in the art world of London and Paris, turning disaster and disgrace into profit and prestige. Lavishly illustrated with some of the most beautiful and intriguing images Whistler ever produced, this book provides a fascinating account of a pivotal period in the artist's long and complicated career.
Whistler's aim was to restore both his fortune and reputation with the Venetian etchings. To that end he included views of familiar sights like the Riva degli Schiavoni and San Marco, but he also captured quiet backwaters, secret gardens, and lantern-lit windows that did not appear in any guidebook. His selection of views and compositions, plus the expressiveness of his line and printing, differentiated his work from that of others, and MacDonald shows the process by which Whistler selected, shaped, and edited his Venetian corpus. He drew figures in distinctively Italian costume, each an individual, moving, gesturing, and interacting with other real people.
An appendix of Whistler's letters from Venice provides an entertaining account of his time there and also deepens the reader's understanding of how the city challenged and inspired him.

This is an amazingly fine book of Whistler's etchings & pastels for a very reasonable price now that it has been remaindered. To me, the absolute economy of means in his pastels is stunning. Every pastel artist should pick up this book. Just looking carefully at these little masterpieces is worth more than a whole course in pastel drawing.

2 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation.......2005-01-30

I bought this book some months ago in anticipation of a trip to Venice - which I have just returned from . I only glanced at the pictures before I left , with a view to savouring them and reading the text when I returned home.

When I actually started to read the text I discovered that the English translation is like something out of "Monty Python" ... the sketch with the obscene English/Hungarian phrase book . The line "my hovercraft is full of eels" would not be out of place in this book. It is a bizarre, pseudo architectural, English - Italian mangle of words, tenses, concepts & jargon. The dust jacket blurb even manages to insult the photographer (referring to his other works -"... among these volumes , some are worthy of value").

Some phrases ..."prevelaently ligneous", "architectonical experimentation", "autarchic economy" etc etc - and that's just the introduction !

Almost none of the complete sentences in the book make any sense whatsoever.

The photos are nice though - hence the 2 stars.

It'll look good on your coffee table, as long as you don't attempt to read it !

      4 out of 5 stars Venetian Palazzi.......2004-09-23

An excellent volume with color photographs, an engraving, and a brief history and description of each of around a couple dozen palazzi. I only wish there were even more photographs and longer and even more detailed desciptions and histories of each palazzo and that many more palazzi were covered. No doubt I am being greedy, as such a work covering all the palazzi would require a gargantuan size or many volumes and only large libraries and millionaires could afford it. I heartily recommend this volume who loves the beautiful and grandly elegant interiors of homes of the Venetian Nobility and the art (Titian to Tiepolo) which graced them, or to anyone planning a trip to the city of the former Serene Republic.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Pictures.......2001-01-15

This book has excellent photography, and the narratives are just as good. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in Italian architecture, design, or furnishings. Although the size of this book is rather large, the pictures are very detailed, and show off the intricacies of every design.

Great Discoveries Audio Tour of Ca' Rezzonico will provide you with the most enjoyable and informative way to visit this majestic but imposing 17th century marble palace. It is one of the few palaces in Venice, which permits public insight into what lies behind the ornamental but often secretive facades of the many exquisite buildings lining the Grand Canal. Today it is one of the finest museums in Venice, housing a wonderful collection of 18th century Venetian art. Largely because of its unique character, where objects designed for great palazzos are displayed in a palace, the contents and the building harmonize in a way not possible in a purposely-built museum. Our carefully researched tour identifies and locates the most relevant artwork to ensure that you do not miss the important pieces and that you clearly understand each items artistic and historic significance. with the advent of readily available digital photography, the temptation is great to just snap away and toss out the unusable images. this book teaches you how to make the most of every shot, how to think about composition and lighting to get more "keepers". highly recommended!

              Book Description

Alaska in the early l950s was one of the world's last great, undeveloped areas. Yet sweeping changes were underway. In l958, Congress awarded the new state over l00 million acres to promote economic development. In l971, it gave Native groups more than 40 million acres to settle land claims and facilitate the building of an 800-mile oil pipeline. Spurred by the newly militant environmental movement, it also began to consider the preservation of Alaska's magnificent scenery and wildlife.

Northern Landscapes is the first comprehensive examination of the campaign to preserve wild Alaska through the creation of a vast system of parks and wildlife refuges. Drawing on archival sources and interviews, Daniel Nelson traces disputes over resources alongside the politics of the Alaska statehood movement. He provides in-depth coverage of the growth of Alaskan environmental organizations, their partnerships with national groups, and their participation in political campaigns into the l970s.

Engagingly written, Northern Landscapes focuses on the activism that led to the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of l980, which set aside more than l00 million acres, doubling the size of the national park and wildlife refuge systems, and tripling the size of the wilderness preservation system. Arguably the single greatest triumph of environmentalism, ANILCA also set the stage for continuing battles over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Alaska's national forests.

5 out of 5 stars How Alaska wilderness was saved.......2005-04-25

In this book a distinguished historian tells how devoted citizen activists persuaded Congress to save the greatest landscapes of Alaska. The Alaska Lands Act saved more than 100 million acres in national parks, wildlife refuges and wilderness areas. The author traces the story of this law from its roots in the 1960s to its enactment in 1980. This book amazed me with its rich and accurate details about the work done by conservation groups, ranging from Alaska grassroots groups to the national Alaska Coalition. (I was a minor player in this campaign in the early years and later was an observer from my job in the Department of the Interior.)

The author has a rare understanding of how citizen groups function. He describes how people from diverse backgrounds and different generations, with diverse skills, can pool their efforts to produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The author tells much about the interactions among the crucial players working to save wild Alaska: Alaskan conservation activists, national conservation leaders, the two crucial congressional leaders John Seiberling and Morris Udall, Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus, and President Jimmy Carter. He gives credit to the millions of people all over the country who wrote letters, spoke at public hearings, and buttonholed their congressmembers.

"Northern Landscapes" is worthwhile reading for anyone who wants to help save wild places. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is constantly threatened by boomers proposing oil drilling, and the rain forest of the Tongass National Forest still needs more defenders. From Maine to California, each of us in our own part of the United States can find wild places worth saving, and we can join hands with local groups who are organizing to save them.
