Book Description
The field of angiogenesis is one of the most exciting fields in contemporary biomedical research. Angiogenesis in the healthy adult is primarily associated with pathological conditions such as tumor growth, inflammation, ischemia, and retinopathies. Physiological angiogenesis in the healthy adult is restricted to the organs of the female reproductive system where it occurs cyclically as well as during pregnancy. The importance of vascular morphogenetic events in the female reproductive system is increasingly being recognized. For example, it has a vital role in normal ovarian function, endometriosis and placental function as well as being important in reproductive tumors of the mammary gland, ovary and uterus. The insights gained from studying this system have a more general interest too since they help shed light on the fundamental characteristics and components involved in the formation of the vascular system and blood vessels during development, and during tumorigenesis. This is the first book that reviews and presents recent advances in the emerging field of reproductive vascular biology. It is divided into four parts reflecting the four female reproductive organs (breast, ovary, uterus, and placenta) and the authors cover both the basic biological processes involved and also stress their clinical significance. The book will interest vascular and reproductive biologists as well as cell and developmental biologists interested in angiogenesis and vasculogenesis.

Book Description
Infrared radiation (IR) analysis is proving a powerful tool for understanding the structure and function of peptides and proteins, but the method remains relatively little known. This book examines these applications in detail, providing a valuable source for both basic methods and new refinements.
Customer Reviews:
Discover the power of Amide III.......2004-01-30
Apart from the basic chapters on basic protein regions such as Amide I and II it extensively explores the the Amide III region as a good way to confirm your band assignments. Also included in are tables of second derivative band shift from verious compounds that help in determining your structure. This is like a mini library that often exists in your processing software, that you can look at directly. As IR user I found this book quite useful.

Infrared and Raman Spectra of Inorganic and Coordination Compounds (2 Volume Set)
ASIN: 0471163929 |
Book Description
The most comprehensive guide to infrared and Raman spectra of inorganic and coordination compounds-now fully revised and updated
This book has served as the definitive guide to infrared and Raman spectroscopy of inorganic and coordination compounds from the time of its first publication in 1963. The Fifth Edition consists of two self-contained volumes: Part A describes basic theories of normal vibrations and their applications to relatively simple inorganic compounds, while Part B extends them to larger and more complex systems-coordination compounds, organometallic compounds, and bioinorganic compounds.
Part B shows how one can deduce structural and bonding information from vibrational spectra. For this purpose, the compounds have been classified into each structural type, their vibrational frequencies and band assignments listed, and typical infrared/Raman spectra illustrated. Special emphasis has been placed on metal-ligand vibrations that appear in the low-frequency region. This new edition
* Incorporates new topics, including complexes of carbon dioxide and dihydrogen and metal complex-DNA interactions
* Offers many references to the latest research in the field
* Reviews all important new results obtained on the subject
* Provides many infrared and Raman spectral charts of typical compounds
* Features 156 illustrations
This is the best reference book for researchers and graduate students in this field today.

Book Description
This book provides the only introductory overview to the relatively new field of protein infrared spectroscopy, which has emerged from very scattered single experiments to broad applications in the past 15 years. While some books may have covered highly specialized areas within this field, no concise introduction exists. The book leads from a summary of the state-of the art techniques to applications. Applications will be of increasing complexity and describe secondary structure analysis of proteins, interaction of proteins with membranes, stability of proteins, and finally address protein function and the analysis of enzyme reaction mechanisms by time-resolved IR spectroscopy.

221 figures. 1984 edition.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Aerodynamics Textbook.......2007-03-23
This book offers a very readable, interesting and up-to-date overview of aerodynamics. It is well written and well organised with clear explanations. The book is suitable for college students. It is also a fantastic tool for those who wish to teach themselves aerodynamics and have the background in physics and mathematics to handle it.
Major topics include a review of basic fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, incompressible irrotational flow, inviscid flow, wings of finite span, the Navier-Stokes Equations, supersonic aerodynamics, boundary layer theory, panel methods and finite difference methods.
Overally, an excellent book that is well worth having.
Very Good Introductory Book.......2004-08-02
This is one of the most easy and complete introductory-level books on aerodynamics. It covers all you need, not at a great detail like ,say, kuethe does in his book, but it is a very interesting book since it contains even FORTRAN77 codes. Actually, F77 is a pretty old language, but all the codes contained in this book are easy, so that you can easily translate them in your favorite programming language. The book contains the fundamental aspects of fluid dynamics, inviscid flows, doublets, etc. An extensive overview of the panel method is given, togetherg with other computational means for analyzing inviscid flows. Finite Difference methods and Boundary layers are treated as well, both from a theoretical and computational point of view.
I would definitely recommend it.
A very well-written introduction.......2001-03-26
Jack Moran's book is an excellent introduction to the field of aerodynamics. It is written in an appealing lecture-like style which involves the reader. The explanations are clear. Moran has the ability to explain difficult concepts in an easy to understand way that enhances the reader's understanding of the underlying physics.
The book covers a variety of topics, ranging from potential flows to supersonic flows and turbulence. The physical and mathematical modelling are clearly presented. Numerical modelling is discussed in great detail for potential flow codes (VLM, panel methods) and Navier-Stokes (finite differences). Example programs are given in the book that can be used in computer labs (although they will likely have to be rewritten in a modern language as Moran uses old style Fortran).

Mastering French Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach (Mastering Vocabulary Series)
ASIN: 0521578515 |
Book Description
This textbook provides a comprehensive and structured vocabulary for all levels of undergraduate French courses. It offers a broad coverage of the concrete and abstract vocabulary relating to the physical, cultural, social, commercial and political environment, as well as exposure to commonly encountered technical terminology. The book is divided into twenty thematic sections for easy integration into modular courses. Within each section, words and phrases have been grouped into units and broadly "graded" according to likely usefulness and difficulty. There are 750 accompanying exercises for private study and classroom use.
Customer Reviews:
Good but still a bit disappointing.......2007-09-21
I'm very divided over this book, and for a simple reason. It is a great help for those learning French. To the best of my knowledge, there is no more extensive book produced for those interested in enlarging their French vocabulary. Using a normal courseook, such as those in the Colloquial series, you will end up with knowing the grammar as well as with a vocabulary of about 1500 words. That's a good start, but not enough to start communicating in French - you'll have to enlarge your vocabulary.
The book Mastering French Vocabulary by Barron's is a comprehensive book that will give you about 7.500 words. This book, though, is far more extensive and you'll end up knowing more than 10.000 words after completing it. Great, so why only three stars?
Compared to the other vocabulary books in the Cambridge Using X Vocabulary series, this books disappoints. I've compared it to the book Using Spanish Vocabulary and the difference is huge. I'll focus on three differences:
- Size. This book is MUCH thinner so you don't have the opportunity to learn as many words as in Using Spanish Vocabulary.
- Stilted language. Using Spanish Vocabulary is filled to the brim with colloquial words, even equivalents to boobs, shagging etc. Those may not be the word you use in everyday speech, but then again they might. The choice should be left to you, not to some editor censoring your speech. And the same difference is found in every topic, Using Spanish Vocabulary includes all registers from the very formal to the very informal while the informal register is lacking from this book.
- Variation. Using Spanish Vocabulary features regional differences, focusing on the Spanish in Spain, in Mexico and in Argentina. There's a fair number of French words that are used in Belgium, Switzerland and especially Canada that are different from the ones used in France. Not one of them is included here.
So while this is a helpful tool for learners, it is the worst book in the best vocabulary series. I hope future editions will be more like Using Spanish or Using Italian.
Surprising Weaknesses In a Text From Cambridge.......2006-06-09
The vocabulary study lists offered by this text are quite comprehensive in a wide-ranging assortment of subject categories, but what seems curious is the fact that these extensive word listings are not alphabetized in either French or English thus making them very time-consuming to use as a quick reference. Don't throw out your dicos.
Something I find most helpful are exercises which call for making careful distinctions between closely related words such as 'la nappe' and 'la serviette' or 'un caillou' and 'un galet' for example. There are also interesting challenges on idiomatic expressions though a number of these appear to be very uncommon indeed, since my other resources, which are extensive, fail to note them at all. While the text does offer the correct French format to these expressions in the answer keys it does not explain the English language equivalent, so occasionally one is left with an expression at hand and uncertainty as to how it might be properly employed.
The most important exercises seem to me to be those involving translating from English into French and literary passages and newspaper articles which are to be translated from the original French into English. There are answer keys for the former but, frustratingly, none for the latter - a major flaw in this text to my estimation. It would be helpful to see how one's own hard copy translation stacks up against that of a professional translator, especially for the extracts from French literature. As for the English to French sentences, it would also have been a nice touch, I think, to key these sentences to a reference grammar such as the CUP's own Advanced French Grammar by Monique l'Huillier. One complaint I have about the translation sentences is that they express things in a fashion highly unlikely to be used in a casual setting. More practical sample sentences to work with would seem to be called for.
As for the essay writing assignments, they will be of little use to the self-study student unless he or she can make connection with someone to proofread their efforts.
It would be nice to see this text pre-packaged with one of the many helpful flashcard programs that are available. I personally find flashcards very helpful, especially the computer variety, in developing both passive and active vocabulary. Given the extensive vocabulary lists which it offers, this text would be a perfect match for such a software product.
I wish I could rate this text more highly, but there are simply too many typos, mistranslations and at least one translation excerpt attributed to an incorrect source - an extract attributed to Madame Bovary which is actually from Flaubert's l'Éducation sentimentale. Surprising errors in a text from the usually careful Cambridge University Press.
The groundwork is laid here for a well-coordinated textbook approach to teaching students to express things properly in French. More focus and less scattershot on driving home sentence structure, flashcard software, a reference grammar tie-in on a per chapter basis along with providing professional translations of the literary extracts would all constitute fine additions to making this a much-improved self-study package for the adult home-learner.
Extensive but prefer another style.......2005-04-24
I like the fact that this book is intensive. I mean it does offer you a large selection of vocabulary. However, I would prefer a smaller list if there were more examples of sentences... Of course, you are expected to construct your own.... I would say it is useful, but I need something more practical for my learning style. But it is a good addition for your French library, and I got it at a bargain price..
Words, Words, and More Words.......2004-01-03
Learning French grammar proves to be a difficult task, but all the grammatical rules in the world will get you no where without the right words to fill in for the various parts of speech. How many students of foreign language have resorted to sign language or "baby" parlance to simply express an otherwise basic thought in English into reasonably intelligent French? In 20 interesting units, this wonderful vocabulary book delivers where so many other thematic vocabulary books merely skim the surface. The units include such topics as: shapes, patterns, containers, sports, science, art, history, politics, buildings, personalities and body parts to just name a few. If you are an intermediate or advanced student, you will fully take advantage of this great text, complete with level one through three vocabulary, formatted by theme and followed by beaucoup de exercises to help you read, translate, and puzzle out intricacies of the French language. The vocabulary includes nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs as well as idiomatic phrases that will help you perfect your skills.
Of course, no such book is complete, but the format provides plenty of space for you to insert your own findings as you read and look up more specific words in a good dictionary. Nevertheless, each topic will provide you with plenty of interesting and diverse ways of expressing yourself---be it in an essay or in a conversation. My one fault with the book is its lack of an English to French Index in a smaller font as an appendix. Otherwise, recommended heartily as one of the best French learning guides I have.
If you want an EXTENSIVE french vocabulary...read this.........2000-06-30
Using French Vocabulary is a very extensive study book. I liked it because it has more relative vocabulary...much better than using a dictionary. The book is divided into several categories for example: a Physical Structures category has vocabulary relating to different types of buildings and any word that you could think of relating to specific types of buildings. All the vocabulary seems very overwhelming at first. I think this book is useful if you already have a little background in studying French. Especially since the instructions for the exercises are not in English. This book is NOT FOR THE BEGINNER but for anyone who would like to develop their vocabulary more. The many exercises are geared to help you know how to relate the words and in what context to use them. The author also helps your vocabulary by using exercises with antonyms. There are exercises in each lesson where you will have to translate a paragraph that uses the vocabulary learned in that section. To end this off, its a good book, if you are really really INTENSELY interested in the French language.

Description:
This paper evaluates and compares the retrieval effectiveness of various search models, based on either automatic text-word indexing or on manually assigned controlled descriptors. Retrieval is from a relatively large collection of bibliographic material written in French. Moreover, for this French collection we evaluate improvements that result from combining automatic and manual indexing. First, when considering various contexts, this study reveals that the combined indexing strategy always obtains the best retrieval performance. Second, when users wish to conduct exhaustive searches with minimal effort, we demonstrate that manually assigned terms are essential. Third, the evaluations presented in this paper study reveal the comparative retrieval performances that result from manual and automatic indexing in a variety of circumstances.
