Book Description

The New Paradigm in Architecture tells the story of a movement that has changed the face of architecture over the last forty years.

The book begins by surveying the counter culture of the 1960s, when Jane Jacobs and Robert Venturi called for a more complex urbanism and architecture. It concludes by showing how such demands began to be realized by the 1990s in a new architecture that is aided by computer design-more convivial, sensuous, and articulate than the Modern architecture it challenges. Promoted by such architects as Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, and Peter Eisenman, it has also been adopted by many schools and offices around the world. Charles Jencks traces the history of computer design which is, at its heart, built on the desire for an architecture that communicates with its users, one based on the heterogeneity of cities and global culture.

This book, the first to explore the broad issue of Postmodernism, has fostered its growth in other fields such as philosophy and the arts. First written at the start of an architectural movement in the mid-1970s, it has been translated into eleven languages and has gone through six editions. Now completely rewritten and with two new chapters, this edition brings the history up to date with the latest twists in the narrative and the turn to a new complexity in architecture.

5 out of 5 stars THE manifesto on Contemporary Architecture.......2007-05-21

A Wonderful book (like all the Jenck's titles) about the construction and many ways that architecture has driven along the "final" of modern architecture

3 out of 5 stars Another polemic by Charles Jencks.......2003-03-03

You have to admire Charles Jencks for promoting Post-Modernism in architecture for 25 years. He makes some intriguing commentaries in this book, but his arguments still ring hollow, largely due to his continued denunciation of Modernism.

He recycles his chapter on The Death of Modern Architecture, filled with the same glaring inaccuracies from the first edition. He admonishes the Modernists for inverting the traditional syntax of architecture, turning boiler rooms into chapels, and chapels into boiler rooms, which he felt was the case with Mies at the IIT campus. Yet, he hails the more recent examples such as the National Museum of Australia (2001) by Ashton, Raggatt and McDougall (ARM) for its crytpic ironic messages that took a text written by Howard Raggatt to help decipher.

But, it seems that Jencks revels in such complexities and contradictions, alluding to the seminal work by Robert Venturi which got the PoMo ball rolling in 1966. Jencks illustrates the turbulent late 60's when an attempt was made to recapture the past, heeding the call by Jane Jacobs in The Death and Life of American Cities (1961) for a new urbanism based on contextualism. The early PoMo figures seemed to revel in the collision of forms as seen in Venturi's work, or simply inverting Modernist icons like the Schroder House, as Michael Graves did in the Benacerraf House addition (1969). A movement really didn't take hold until the 1970's and seemed to reach its apotheosis in the AT&T Building by Philip Johnson (1978-81). However, Jencks was not content to let it go at that. In the succeeding chapters, he attempts to illustrate how Post-Modernism redirected architecture, infused it with new meaning that went beyond the corporate forms of SOM and the huge Disney resort complexes of Michael Graves and Robert Stern, which dominated the 80's.

Jencks includes a fascinating range of work, but I am left scratching my head as to whether all this is really Post-Modern. It seems a bit of a stretch to include Aldo Rossi, whose work is firmly based on Italian Rationalist traditions and the urban planning of Camillo Sitte, a 19th-century Viennese urban planner. The Ad-Hoc forms of Ralph Erskine and Frank Gehry seem to recall theories first put forward in the 1950's, notably those of Aldo Van Eyck, than they do a new paradigm in architecture. The fantastic images of Rem Koolhaas seem to recall Futurist visions from before WWI, with later references to Le Corbusier. But, such references seem to allude Jencks, who seems intent on rewriting architectural history from a Post-Modern perspective.

As he states in his introduction, this is a polemic and it should be read as such. It offers some engaging essays on current trends in architecture but lacks the depth of a thorough survey like that of William J.R. Curtis in his book Modern Architecture since 1900. I guess the ultimate irony is that Le Corbusier is back in vogue, with playful new interpretations of the Domino House by Rem Koolhaas, and architectural one-liners like "The Not Villa Savoye" by ARM, which is painted black apparently representing the antipode of Australia.

Book Description

Big things really do come in small packages! It is no exaggeration to say that today one cannot discuss Japanese manga techniques without touching on figure stylization methods. This book thoroughly explores this topic, starting with the thought process and techniques used to draw the characters known in Japanese as "chibi." Most English-speaking fans call them "superdeformed," or "SD" for short-those oh-so-cute, smaller-than-life characters who are always stealing scenes in such anime favorites as Chobits, Dragonball, and SD Gundam.

4 out of 5 stars Cute and helpful........2005-11-26

This book goes over the basic stuff like how to do the head, the basics of the body, expressions, the difference between a regular manga charater and a chibi(nother word for Super Deformed charater)ect. Then it goes over the details like making fat people, skinny people, how and when to use chibis in comics,so on. It was a great book besides the fact there were a few naked chibis here and there (thats why I gave it four stars) but still worth buying!

4 out of 5 stars It was very informative, and nicely done..........2005-08-23

There were many different things that they talked about in this book, all regarding the drawing of 'deformed characters'. I found all that I needed to in this book, although there were some things (like some little 'in the nude' drawings) that made me lose some focus...

5 out of 5 stars SD or Chibi Characters are NOT just Kids' Drawings!.......2005-01-27

Many people think chibi (or SD) characters are a kind of an art (i.e. gag) itself or that it’s so easy to draw, there is no such need for a book on this topic. It is, but chibi characters doesn’t necessary have to be used in gag or parody works; real life mangaka do sometimes use chibi characters in their works to liven up the atmosphere, especially when funny or comical parts are involved. Also, there’re many “secrets” which makes for a highly successful (cute or funny) chibi character. It can therefore be said that chibi characters can be considered an essential part of Manga, unless of course, you plan to do an entirely “serious” manga that doesn’t involve any humor or chibi characters.

This is where this book comes in. Wonderfully organized with many details, hints and tips to drawing a successful and lively chibi character, the book is both engaging and enriching from the beginning to the end. The book first explains the characteristics of chibi characters, before moving on to how to draw chibi characters’ eyes, noses, mouths and even ears. The book also touches on the actions, poses and expressions of chibi characters, and also offers you advices on how to make your character even more Q! (or cute!). Apart from the characters, there’re also tips on deforming other things and props such as background, robots, trees, and even cars! Whew!

Not to forget, there is a special bonus at the back of the book where you can mix and match everything in the face to get your own chibi character’s look and at the same time, hone your skill.

Although it’s mentioned here that the reading level is for ages 9-12, I would like to emphasize again, chibi or super deformed characters doesn’t just mean kids’ drawings or drawings for kids, if you ARE serious about manga drawing, chibi characters is one area you’ll need to work on as well. A highly valuable, constructive and entertaining book; I recommend this book to anyone serious in manga drawing! ^^

5 out of 5 stars about time for book like this to came out.......2004-09-28

Many typical Anime character designs feature heads that are just somewhat larger than would be proprotionally correct. is known as Super-deformed characters, SD for short or Chibi in japanese exagerate this deformation in the goal of appearing cute and funny.Artists often Super Deform characters in order to show an extreme change in the characters' mood. the goal of the animators is always comedic cuteness. Often done at the punchline of a joke for an extra comedic oomph. In this book its cover all the basics you need to know about this japanese style what covers in manga.I give it five stars because there no other book i know cover such a area

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good .......2004-08-11

well This Manga book is not like the other manga books . This kinda like a special editon . Mostly I would recomend it for more avanced Manga Drawers . If you are just a starter I would recommend Geting started. the first book of manga. It really tells you to draw Chibis (really tiny people) . If you are expeting how to draw bodys, and comics or proffional Manga . You don't want get this book . But If you want to learn all about to draw chibis ,(very small or deformed humans) how thier moves , Faces , Eyes ect. But it pretty Good for people who want to draw chibis . Chibis are a different type of Manga . It is not like the drawings in Pokemon , Salior Moon , and Yu-Gi-Oh . Pokemon , Salior Moon , Yu-Gi- Oh are too serious and drama like manga . What this book contains is a manga what is more childesh like and not very serious or dramatic.

Book Description

The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15

I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17

This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14

This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.

But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.

5 out of 5 stars Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04

I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.

5 out of 5 stars don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28

Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-28

This is a great buy for anyone who wants to know how to create their own personal style for drawing girls in manga. I love this book. My friend saw it and borrowed it from me. She has been drawing GREAT ever since! THank you how to draw manga crew!! p.s. don't be scared by the cover, it's not like that at ALL in the book! Toodles!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2006-11-30

This book truly lives up to it's name, mastering bishoujo characters. For those of you having a little trouble with designing a unique character, then this book is definately for you! This book contains different personalities that you can give to your characters, the kinds of clothes that character would wear, and hair styles. It is full of poses that would be beneficial to you as well as some scenes of walking, jumping, and the way the body twists when it's doing a certain action. Another good quality this book has is girls waking in groups and sitting in groups. I think that is very helping if you are planning on drawing a manga with a school scene with a group of friends. This book really doesn't have any nudity, it does have the outline of the nude body, but nothing obscene. I would really recommend this book. A must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Great book, I recommend to you!.......2006-08-17

This book is excellent to draw beautiful woman characters, the book shows you 20 different characters and their customes, body compositions and other kind of stuffs, a very interresting book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best "How To Draw Manga" books.......2005-09-19

A lot of the "How To Draw Manga" series really aren't that great. But this one, they actually did a very good job with. I like the first half of the book and how it explaining the twelve personalities. The best part about is you can almost design and give an identity to a unique character of your own. Ranging from punctual and outgoing to quite and conservative.

As for the second half, it almost has "fillers" after the twelve personalities. What I mean by fillers is that just stuff to fill the pages will. But something's are relatively useful, like school uniforms, character movement, relaxed poses, and hand gestures. What I did not find to be useful was entering and closing a door, drawing hair and eyes, and driving.

I wish I could give this a five star, but I can't because they could have gone into better details of maybe the eyes and hair, or left out the closing of a door and driving. But still, this book is pretty good and I recommend this book for the intermediate to advanced artist

5 out of 5 stars The true meaning of manga.......2005-06-30

Okay, this is going to be my first review on Amazon. I'm from The Netherlands, so my English is not perfect. Please forgive me if there are some weird words or sentences in this review, I'm only 15... ;)

I'm a huge fan of manga and anime, not only on TV or in video games, but I also like drawing it myself. I've collected several books about drawing manga, and More How To Draw Manga: Mastering Bishoujo Characters is one of them.
Well, what can I say about this book... It's MARVELOUS!! It is such a great book! As I said before, I've got several books about drawing manga, and this is without a doubt the best one! It teaches you how you can perfectly draw different bishoujo characters. Their traits of character, what kind of clothes they wear, how they like to do their hear... Eyes, noses, mouths, cheeks... This book has got it all. It really helped me to get acquainted with all kinds of girls and how I could draw them with their characteristic marks. I'd definitely recommend this book to all of you!!

Here's a description of the contents of this book:
Chapter 1: Twelve Character Types
- Using Impressions to Portray the Twelve Character Types
- Key Points in Distinguishing the Twelve Character Types
- Twelve Character Types (such as the shy girl, the cutie, the bully, the imp, the princess, the bad girl and more)
- Height Distinctions
- Selecting Costumes That Match The Character
- Uniform Portrayal
- Tricks to Designing Uniforms
- Techniques in Character Image Design
Chapter 2: Making the Figure Move
- The fundamentals of Character Movements
- Walking Scenes
- Drawing Characters Entering through Doors
- Popular Relaxed, Conversational Poses
- Hand Gestures in Conversation Scenes
- Running, Leaping, Falling: Three basic Action Poses
- Figures and Cars

There are a lot of descriptions in this book, but even more beautiful art work. The drawings are absolutely beautiful. This is, in my opinion, the true meaning of manga!! Don't hesitate, just buy it: you won't regret it!
Or, as we say in The Netherlands:
Mensen, dit boek is echt te gek! Als je van manga tekenen houdt, is dit boek echt een must! Echt kopen dan, daar zul je echt geen spijt van krijgen!

5 out of 5 stars Slim but informative on Manga.......2006-05-02

This book is probably the best yet that I've read from the Manga Techniques series. While not as extensive and rich in pages as other series, this particular volume has enough to get someone through the basic steps of drawing manga characters. As usual, the title is "Manga Techniques", so it's supposed to show techniques and tips in drawing, not really ideas or concepts. But it's good enough to show a starter how to make characters. Tips on head size, body measurement, body parts shaping, and posing characters are included, all the technical stuff that some artists might miss. I guess one drawback is that the book focuses on human characters only, no orcs, monsters or any other such variations on characters. But after all, that's not what this book is for. Of course, this series is meant to be a beginner's series, so more advanced artists could use professional samples or more advanced instruction books for more developed concepts and ideas. But this particular volume could be considered an essential.

If you love Manga and want to know how to draw, I erge you to get this book.

Compared to most marine picture pictures, this one does a much better job than average in telling the history of an era. The captions are the books strength, and generally run for a few paragraphs. This is a good book if you would like to get a feeling of what it was like to live near or work on the water in the Pacific Northwest in the period from the late 1800s up to WWII

Few consumers have been attracted to "clean" cars--those powered by something other than traditional internal combustion engines--because they aren't satisfied yet with critical factors such as appearance (too odd), cost (too high), dependability (too uncertain), and performance (too limited). The times they are a-changing, however. A host of catalysts, including new legal requirements and shifting public opinion, is finally driving automakers toward relevant alternative technologies that actually date back 160 years. And Jim Motavalli, who travels an unusual professional route as both syndicated auto columnist and environmental reporter, chronicles the buildup and potential payoff in his intriguing book Forward Drive. "The information I came across ... described a personal transportation revolution that was becoming tantalizingly close," he writes. "Here, at last, were vehicles that promised to not only greatly reduce pollution but also to perform better, be more reliable, cruise farther, and last much longer than anything the public had ever seen." Written for those "who'd somehow failed to get their engineering Ph.D.s," it absorbingly examines the history of such vehicles, the impact of gasoline automobiles, the pioneers who already utilize alternative power, the large and small R&D operations, the political and financial forces under which everything operates, and the broader picture of sustainable transportation. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

Alternative-fuel cars from major automakers are entering the U.S. market -- promising far better performance and range than the disappointing electric vehicles of past decades -- "clean" cars are no longer being relegated to side-show status; they're about to take center stage.

Forward Drive presents the fascinating story of the race to build the cars of the future -- ones that can help to address the problems (including global warming, fossil-fuel depletion, and urban sprawl) that have accompanied the rise and spread of traditional gas-powered cars. The book traces the history of automobile development, including early attempts to create practical electric vehicles, and it explores new technologies for clean cars, especially hybrid (gas/electric) drives and hydrogen-based fuel cells.

In his research, author Jim Motavalli conducted extensive interviews with fuel-cell makers, energy researchers, and key auto-industry figures at GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, and Honda, giving us a clear picture of how U.S. and foreign automakers are getting serious about clean cars. With his passion for cars and his knowledge of their history and workings, he presents an insightful, informative, and highly readable book about revolutionary cars on the immediate horizon.

1 out of 5 stars Too Shrill To Be Taken Seriously.......2004-03-23

Environmentalists every stripe probably sit and wonder why they cannot seem to get any traction with their anti-gas guzzler campaign, and this lunatic raving is the perfect example of why that is. Motavalli has a wealth of facts and data at his disposal, but his potentially rational arguments are crowded out by his shrill denunciations of auto executives, auto workers and consumers, all of whom he scorns for not being as enlightened as he likes to think he is. Motavalli's fault is not in his material, but in his presentation. He could very well have made a profound impact with this book, much in the way Eric Schlosser did in the expose Fast Food Nation. Yet because Motavalli can't help but being hysterical for hysteria's sake, the reader comes away with the feeling that he has just attended a meeting of the Anti-Automobile Front, or some such extremist group where ecoterrorism is considered moderate. Too bad. This book, by accident to be sure, adds another victory to Detroit: it shows how irrational and extreme its critics are, and thus makes the dinosaurs in Detroit look reasonable by comparison. No wonder no one takes Motavalli seriously enough to propel him onto the bestseller list.

    5 out of 5 stars HIS BROTHA.......2001-05-30

This book is just flat out amazing. I read it every night, and that's a lot of reading (272 pages a night). Anyways, trust me, it talks about cars that are developing, such as electric and nitrogen...Peace out fools

5 out of 5 stars all up in your mug.......2001-05-30

this is the most exciting and interest book i have ever read on cars. I have found out so much information on cars of the future it is amazing. Jim Motavalli does a great job of explaining how these cars will work to the average person who doesnt know alot about cars.

5 out of 5 stars The Future is Now!.......2001-02-06

"Forward drive" is a pleasure to read, written by Jim Motavalli, who is well-versed in his subjects. Reading this book is one of the few things today that makes me feel like I'm actually in the 21st century, not stuck in the 90's and never progressing. The book has a wealth of information not found in any other book, and there are only a few books about the future of automobiles. I had no idea that big automakers were not really in a hurry to give us a truly revolutionary car with a new power source; it seems the profit margin was less for holding off in research and development because of some link with oil companies. I mean, come on, it's the year 2001! Where are all the cars like we saw in Bladerunner? Are we still stuck using twenty-miles to the gallon gasoline internal-combustion engines? What is the message from automakers when cars depicted in video games, for example, seem more real than the actual future? Why isn't there yet a car that is beyond what we have?

The book discusses much needed information about "the race" to build cleaner cars, and that a car with no emissions--a technological difficulty in itself--is actually possible. The questions of fuel efficiency, speed, power and appeal of futuristic cars are also addressed, indicating the knowledgeability of the author. Key among the topics of "Forward Drive" is affordability. I would not pay $100,000 to drive a non-polluting car, simply because I'm not willing to pay that much just to drive.

Motavalli, editor of "E:" magazine, clearly shows his love for the craft of writing nonfiction. "Forward drive" cannot be fully absorbed in only a skimming or a preview; it takes a dedicated block of time to actually read its pages carefully. I have found it very helpful as a reference in the book that I am writing. This book is one of those you don't want to bring to the second-hand store if you have any concern at all about the future--which is actually right now. Highly recommended for intelligent minds. It's about time we have some new information about something that affects the majority of Americans: driving. Buy "Forward drive," you won't be disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Coming soon: fuel-efficient cars.......2000-05-10

Forward Drive is a well-documented and welcome piece on the changes taking place in powering cars. Jim Motavalli's research reveals how the "electric car" is a far from a new idea since electric cars were quite commonplace in the early 20th century. The book describes how the Big Three (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) have only recently, and somewhat reluctantly, joined the race to produce fuel-efficient cars while continuing to produce SUV's that make a mockery of CAFÉ standards. Fortunately others such as Honda are in the forefront of the effort to bring more fuel-efficient and less-polluting vehicles to the public. The book has a chapter detailing the advances in fuel technology going on at such places as Ballard Laboratory. Also fascinating are examples of other fuel cell applications such as its use in energy production. While the section on how the fuel cell works were a bit technical, Motavalli's opus is an exciting look into the future where our skies will be less smog-ridden and our dependence on petroleum reduced.
