    Book Description

The Succulent and Nama Karoo form part of the arid southwestern zone of Africa, a vast region of rugged landscapes and low treeless vegetation. Studies of this unique biome have yielded fascinating insights into the ecology of its flora and fauna. This book is the first to synthesize these studies, presenting information on biogeographic patterns and life processes, form and function of animals and plants, foraging ecology, landscape-level dynamics, and anthropogenic influences. The contributions offer novel analyses of the factors distinguishing the Karoo from other temperate deserts and challenge generalizations about semi-arid ecosystems.

      Book Description

Dynamics of Surfactant Self-Assemblies explains the dynamics of micellar equilibria, tracking surfactant exchange, and micelle formation/breakdown processes. Highlighting the structural similarities of amphiphilic block copolymers to surfactants, this volume elucidates the dynamics of more complex self-assemblies that surfactants and amphiphilic block copolymers form in solutions. The book first discusses self-assembling processes taking place in aqueous surfactant solutions and the dynamic character of surfactant self-assemblies. The next chapter reviews methods that permit the study of the dynamics of self-assemblies. The dynamics of micelles of surfactants and block copolymers, solubilized systems, microemulsions, vesicles, and lyotropic liquid crystals/mesophases are reviewed successively. The authors point out the similarities and differences in the behavior of these different self-assemblies. Much emphasis is put on the processes of surfactant exchange and of micelle formation/breakdown that determine the surfactant residence time in micelles, and the micelle lifetime. The last three chapters cover topics for which the dynamics of surfactant self-assemblies can be important for a better understanding of observed behaviors: dynamics of surfactant adsorption on surfaces, rheology of viscoelastic surfactant solutions, and kinetics of chemical reactions performed in surfactant self-assemblies used as microreactors. Dynamics of Surfactant Self-Assemblies offers a unique and comprehensive review of the literature that exists on the dynamics of the various surfactant self-assemblies and a unified perspective on this topic. It provides researchers with a useful guide for the dynamics of the surfactant systems that they wish to investigate.

                Description:
The surfactant to dye binding degree (SDBD) method is proposed for the routine monitoring of anionic surfactants in aqueous environmental samples and their analytical features compared with those provided by the standard methylene blue (MB) method. This new analytical approach is based on the effect that anionic surfactants exert on the binding degree of the cationic surfactant didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDABr) to the anionic dye Coomassie Brilliant Blue G (CBBG). The formation of DDABr-CBBG aggregates is monitored photometrically. The analytical applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by determining anionic surfactants in tap, river and swamp water, and raw and treated sewage. The mean recoveries obtained ranged between 99 and 101%. The SDBD method offers important advantages over the classical MB method: it is more sensitive, selective, precise, simple and rapid; the analytical response is independent of the molecular structure of the anionic surfactants, and the volume of sample required for analysis and the consumption of organic solvents are significantly reduced.

                  Description:
The surfactant to dye binding degree (SDBD) method was extended for the first time to the determination of cationic amphiphiles. For this purpose, Cresyl Violet (CV) and sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) were selected as dye and reactant surfactant, respectively. This chemical system was used for the determination of cationic surfactants in pharmaceuticals. The approach was based on the competition established between the dye and cationic analytes to form mixed aggregates with the anionic surfactant (SDS-CV and SDS-analyte), which resulted in an increase of the amount of SDS required to reach a given SDS-CV binding degree. The feasibility of the proposed method to determine quaternary ammonium surfactants belonging to different structural groups (alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chlorides, alkyltrimethylammonium bromides and alkylpyridinium chlorides) in a wide variety of pharmaceutical formulations (solutions, creams and powders) was proved. The analytical features of the SDBD method (versatility, high precision and selectivity, ruggedness, rapidity, simplicity and low cost) made it an advantageous alternative to the conventional methods used in cationic surfactant quality control.

                        Book Description

This book entertainingly traces the history of physics from the observations of the earlyGreeks through the discoveries of Galileo and Newton to the dazzling theories of such scientists as Planck, Einstein, Bohr, and Bohm. This humanized view of science opens up the mind-stretching visions of how quantum mechanics, God, human thought, and will are related, and provides profound implications for our understanding of the nature of reality and our relationship to the cosmos.

I read Wolf's book some time ago and for a novice, he writes very succinctly. I enjoy Wolf's style and wit along with the drawings so the novice has a visual. The author has appeared in the movie What the Bleep, and I have observed that he has moved a quantum leap in his understanding and he is even more witty. Despite the fact that i am submiting this review without having read the entire book, it does give you a very clear and comprehensive review of the history, foundations and development in physics leading into quantum physics.
It's worth every cent and I strongly recomend it for anyone who has begun or would like to begin the discovery of this science.

"In the literal sense, the quantum leap is the tiny but explosive jump that a particle of matter undergoes in moving from one place to another." "In the figurative sense, taking the quantum leap means taking a risk." "The first paradox was that things moved without following a law of mechanical motion."

This is the world of weird. From the early scientific thoughts on the paradoxes of motion and matter, (which eventually led to materialism) to, "what is reality", the wave particle theory, and parallel universes.

It is written in laymen's terms,.............. well sort of. Wolf was formally a professor of physics at San Diego State University. With the authors wit, philosophy, and spirituality, he helps makes it a fun read. He gives us plenty of analogies to help in his explanations of the complex. He also brings forth loads of information without being exhaustive.

The most fascination part of the book, is why free will exists. This is true, because of how the brains neurons are set up to fire. If this were not so, we would be as if robots. So we are then only left to free will.

God the initial cause, nothing is left to chance. Does this allow for "natural selection"? We will never discover God's secret. "We cannot help but disturb the universe when we observe it." "We are just victims of the universe."

Are we beginning a new age of awareness of quantum consciousness as did the individuals of the past?

1 out of 5 stars And this is Quantum Physics you say?.......2006-04-26

No this is not Quantum Physics, this is just another book picking little parts of Quantum Physics, removing all the math, removing a lot of the logic, and adding poetic license. Look, if you're interested in Quantum Physics, and REAL science, there are plenty of other books that are much better at explaining real Quantum Physics on a level most people understand. Brian Greene has a couple very good books that do just that, No formuli either. You may have to look up an occasional word, but if your not willing to do that, I don't understand how you're going to learn anything ever anyways. This book is much more towards philosophy than physics. I can agree with the first paragraph, and from there on is philosophy. And physicists don't have 'faith' particles exist, they know they do from scientific observation. Billions aren't invested in Particle Accelerators so scientists can get faith, that would be clearly pointless. I'm working to my Doctorate in Physics, and when they find out I'm primarily interested in Quantum Physics I am too commonly asked what I think about beliefs that are in books like this. If you read this, you're wasting your time. The only thing it is good for, is for the author who's making money off of whoever is foolish enough to buy it, so please, find a book with real science. A key way you can tell is real books will often try to explain concepts with examples, the other kind of books explain things with imagery and romanticism.

This book is a good groundwork for the novice w/ interest of Quantam Physics (as I) and no background knowledge. While a little dry it is an easy read.

I am trying to think of a person who would be interested in an altered version of this translation. I am honestly drawing a blank. To me, the original language and spelling used are important. I look at this for its historical and literary value. I am not looking for the best translation ever made with updated spelling. If I want that, I have my preferences, and they are more modern. Their edition of Tyndale's New Testament didn't change the spelling. Why here?

While the Wycliffe translation of the Bible was very important to church history and the beginning of the renascence, it is important to know something before stating this is a better or more accurate translation. Wycliffe actually could not read or speak Greek or Hebrew. This version was translated from the Latin Vulgate. That was what the Roman Catholic church was using at the time. So while this was the first version of the Bible available to the laymen in England, it is not based on older or more accurate texts. For a very good read on the history of the Bible, check out The Final Authority by W. Grady. It is a VERY insightful read.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly Latinate translation.......2005-05-25

As to publishing quality, I have to repeat the comments that this is excellent workmanship, and is a credit to the publisher.

And as to the preference of original spelling over modern, I enjoy both. I own the same author's excellent Tyndale New Testament in the original spelling and love it. I do not find that the spelling gets in the way of comprehension. I ordered this modern spelling edition simply because Amazon didn't seem to have the original spelling version. I can consult the original spelling on-line anyway if I feel deprived at any time. I don't feel that modern spelling is a fatal error.

As to the accuracy of the translation, this is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate, with all its errors and additions over the years. For accuracy to the autographic text, translation from the much older Greek manuscripts is much preferable. However, the Bible is designed, like NASA space capsules, with redundant systems, which render it resistent to significant alteration. If you're a Protestant, you're going to read this and say, "That's the Bible!" Yes, as only one example, where we read "repentance" Wycliffe, from the Vulgate, will say "penance", a material alteration of the truth of Scripture. But read it, and with all the alterations, the Truth is there, unaltered. The parts may change, but the whole speaks eloquently of the truth of Christianity centered on a personal relationship between individual and God, salvation coming from God, not the church. If all we had was this admittedly flawed, and all translations are flawed, version, our theology would be unaltered. But let us not speak of this as a more accurate translation than others. It is not, but it is excellent.

The importance of this translation is that it was the first translation of the Bible into English by anyone! Translating it transformed the theology of Wycliffe, inspiring him to organize the Lollards to travel throughout England, actually reading the Holy Scripture to the population, so they could judge the truth for themselves. The whole transformation of England into a protestant nation can be traced to this man. And the continuing journey toward Truth of the Catholic church can be traced to the subversive acts of this man. It's too bad, that like Martin Luther, his rhetoric was so harsh and vitriolic that it completely shut the door to any reasonable discussion of the issues of concern, and instead, pitted groups of Christians against each other in deadly conflict that made Roman persecution look like a game of checkers. So historically, this is a much more significant translation than the King James Bible of 1611.

I am very impressed by this bible's simplicity to read while maintaining accuracy. Also, the book is surprisingly high quality print, paper, and binding, all done in Italy. If you are interested in a Bible more true to the original manuscripts than the 'King James' then this is for you!

The other reviewers have nit picked this volume because of the word style changes, but make little if any comment on the scripture as to the "spirituals" (i.e., the spiritual aspects). Many of the verses in the King James must be translated "colorfully" or with a hint of obscurity because they generate confusion but are clarified here, PRAISE GOD! I have compared this book to the original Wyclif of the English Hexapla published by Samuel Bagster in England. I have not compared every word, but those which have been compared reveal this New Testament is accurate, and TRUTH (i.e., POWER). This book will help reveal the mysteries of the scriptures to you and HELP everyone come to know WHY Wycliff and his followers faced death for disseminating this material. This book puts the power of the word where it ought to be, in the hands of the believers and not the pastoral elite. BUY THIS BOOK! The "church" for years has created a dependency on them and not the word--just like Caiaphas, just like the Pharisees! The Phariseeic spirit in the church today is rampant and YES this text will throw down that spirit of evil and bring you closer to Jesus who is the word (John 1), and Jesus to you! I amazed at the self appointed editors who throw stones at this book for its "modernization". This "modernization" is NOT like a living bible or NIV feel good, this is the word. Compared to the King James which I highly revere this book unmasks the political creation of even the King James. Yes, even the King James has politically inspired softening of the truth of the word. There is GREAT power in the word and you WILL find it here if you read it. Again, BUY this book!

                                      Book Description

One of Hardy's most unusual novels, A Laodicean features a heroine torn between the dilapidated aristocratic romance of the past and the energetic technocracy of the modern world. Paula Power's two suitors--a patrician Army officer, and an architect, representative of the "new nobility of
talent and enterprise"--comically illustrate the great social changes that were taking place as Hardy wrote the novel. The World's Classics edition of A Laodicean is unique in its use of the original text of 1881.

The church is Laodicea was wishy-washy in its faith commitment to Christ. A Laodicean, therefore, is someone who is lukewarm. The lukewarm lady in this Victorian lady is Paula Power. Paula is the daughter of a later railroad tycoon Her very name "Power" is a symbol for the power of the industrialized world of railroads and progress. As the novel begins she stands in a Baptist chapel preparing to be baptized. At the last moment she refuses the sacrament.
This scene is the first sight the young architect George Somerset has of the woman he will work for and love. Somerset and his rival architect Havill engage in a contest to see who will get a lucrative commission to renovate ancient Castle De Stancy purchased by Paula's wealthy father. The DeStancy's represent the old aristocracy. Paula is friendly with Charlotte De Stancy and owns the castle.Paula is beautiful with a mind all her own. Not a shrinking lilly is she!
The novel has two love triangles. Paula is loved by Somerset and Captain William De Stancy the brother of Charlotte and father of his bastard son Will Dare 9 (who dare's to do dirty tricks with a will of his own!). De Stancy is stationed near the castle following years in India. Dare is a photographer who assists Somerset in his architectural drawings. He will steal the plans of the castle restoration giving them to the rival architect Havill. He will also claim that Somerset is a gambler and a drunk by forging a telegram and a photo of the young man. The novel is thus using a telegram and a photograph to advance the plot.
Photography and telegraphing are also symbols of the coming age of the modern world. Dare is a deceitful odious man whose plots for his Dad to wed the wealthy Paula are foiled in the end.
The second triangle involves George who is loved by Paula (her commitment to him is often lukewarm!) and the mousy Charlotee DeStancy.
The novel has many chapters set in the watering holes of France and Germany where the characters go for the waters and gaming. The book is well illustrated by the famed George DuMaurier who also wrote the novel
                                        "Trilby."
Hardy was himself a trained architect. The novel has philsophical disucssions intermingled with the love story. The book has a relatively happy ending which is surprising.Tragedy is the usual end of most Hardy books. Hardy was a skeptic and an agnostic who finest work is in tragedy and not comedy.
This is a fine book with a story well told. It is not a major novel by Hardy but is still worth several hours of reading enjoyment.

                                        1 out of 5 stars Ouch!.......2004-03-08

Paula Power has inherited Stancy Castle from her father, who made his money from railway development. She is living in this Gothic pile with Charlotte De Stancy, her close friend (hint, hint) whose family's ancestral seat the castle was before the nouveaux riches moved in. Stancy Castle is to be renovated. The architect George Somerset, who takes a shine to Paula, competes for the contract. The De Stancy family see this competition and the chance to marry William De Stancy to Paula as a means of regaining their ancestral rights.

I couldn't wait to finish this novel, which is the worst of his I've read since "The Hand of Ethelberta". It's a minor potboiler of a romance, filled with cut-out characters and ludicrous melodrama. There's no examination of the thought processes of the characters - the sorry plot just plods along like an aged emaciated donkey. Even when Hardy tries to inject some life into the novel by switching the setting to the Continent, it only makes things worse by making the plot convolutions even more far-fetched.

It just goes to show that even great novelists can have an off day. Thankfully, Hardy wrote far better novels than this earlier in his career and went on to write better ones later. Thank goodness for that.

4 out of 5 stars Not Very Subtle, But Often Surprising.......2001-01-09

Thomas Hardy's 1881 novel, "A Laodicean" is often overlooked among his more noted works, like "Tess" or "Jude". While "A Laodicean" is not the most subtly developing Victorian novel in terms of romance, it is sophisticated and worth reading in other aspects. Subtitled "A Story of To-day," Hardy's novel effectively explores the relationship between the coming age of technology and the death of the aristocracy in pre-20th century Britain.

The novel begins with George Somerset, a flighty and intelligent young man who has tinkered with several pursuits, but is finally settling into architecture. Wandering about the vicinity of Markton village, he comes upon a rustic baptism. Paula Power, a young heiress whose late father was a railroad tycoon, refuses to be baptized, raising Pastor Woodwell's charge against her that she is a "Laodicean," a lukewarm believer. George is engaged to work on the restoration of Paula's new residence, Castle De Stancy. Somerset's fascination with Power is born and the action of the novel begins in earnest.

Some of the themes of interest include technological advance - the telegraph's intrusion into the most ancient spaces - the gothic castle and photography. With the image of the crumbling gothic Castle De Stancy, Hardy questions the relevance of hereditary aristocracy and religious fervor to the cosmopolitan modern age. With Paula, Hardy's lifelong interest in the independent heroine is complicated and subtly nuanced. With the fascinating Mr. Dare, Hardy plays with his gothic and colonial subtexts, prefiguring Bram Stoker's late 1890's "Dracula."

"A Laodicean" is worth reading because it is itself lukewarm - unsure whether progress is always positive and uncomfortable with the flippancy of both the aristocracy and new wealth. It is a book whose very instabilities and insecurities make it engaging.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Hardy's best, but an interesting read........2000-04-24

One of the interesting aspects of writing a thesis on imagery in Hardy's novels was getting to read some of the lesser known of his writings, this one included. While there is good reason for many of them to be little considered, "A Laodicean" is still worth a read if you are a Hardy fan. It was largely written while he was bedridden after a mystery illness in 1880-1881. In the novel. Hardy tries to capture the changing world in the England of his day. Aristocracy and family names had dominated, but new wealth in the form of industry and technology were beginning to assert themselves. Thus, his heroine Paula Powers can't make up her mind which of her two suitors, an aristocrat and an architect, she really wants. Even when she makes her choice, there is still doubt in her mind right to the end of the novel, hence the description of her as a `Laodicean', (from Revelation 3:14-22) someone who is neither hot nor cold. Many of the images and themes which we associate with Hardy's better known novels are here, but it never quite hits the heights. Still, it is interesting to see this take on the changes on England's society near the end of the 19th century.

The world is full with books about Christian faith; few of them are outstandingly precious to the acquirement of knowledge and, which is more important, the blessings of the Holy Ghost. Most of them together with the creation of countless Christian sects have accomplished the main target of the Evil Spirit, to create the biggest confusion in Human History: The Spiritual Babylon, as one of the undoubted accomplishment of the prophecies of the Most High.

The Church of the Laodicean is now presented to the reader in order to dissipate this confusion, to guide back the faithful ones to the true beliefs of the primitive brotherhood reformed by our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is also presented to clarify some confused concepts about Christian History and doctrines; to show the world that Christianism is not - as most scholars pretend a new religion barely six centuries older than Islamism. The Church of Jesus has always existed since the beginning of Creation, since the appearance on this planet of our first parents Adam and Eve. That it never identified itself with any visible Institution through the dance of centuries and millennia. That the Church of God verily exists and it is spread out among all the unaccountable Christian sects but that it is, above all, greater than the sum of all of them.

This book was written too to show the reader and the student of the Holy Writ that to understand the New Pact - which tells us all about the Antitypical Ministration, it is necessary, due its overwhelming importance, to know and thoroughly understand first the Typical Ministration widely explained in the Old Pact. Without this spiritual requisite it is really easy to get entangled in the webs of the spurious teachings of the churches.

Most of all, though, inside the pages of this book it is plainly shown the last message of the Most High to Humankind, The Signs of the Times expressed in the biblical prophecies show us clearly that the end of this cycle of life is about to come. The hinge of Human History is about to turn definitively very soon. Sooner perhaps than anybody who studies the Holy Bible may think...

Nostalgically longing for medieval certainties, she must face the fraught conditions of her own age. ...
