    Book Description

Teaches the beginner how to read and understand material containing regression analysis. It does not teach the reader how to do regression analysis; rather, it walks the reader through elementary material using few equations or specialized jargon. The authors present a verbal intuitive interpretation of regression coefficients, associated statistics, and hypothesis tests. Thus, this book can be used by anyone who needs to understand the principles of regression analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Accessible Overview for the Beginning Student.......2005-10-05

This work is an excellent overview of regression for the beginning student (undergraduate or graduate). It's primarily designed for interpreting regression analyses, rather than actually conducting them yourself, but I found it extremely helpful to read in concert with my graduate course on regression. I'd recommend it for anyone just starting out with regression or for someone who is primarily a reader of regression analyses conducted by others.

I would also highly recommend, Multiple Regression: A Primer by Paul Allison.

                      4-30-06

I used 7th ed vol. 2 for an online physics course and it wasn't a terrible book. Most of the stuff in here is not at all intuitive, so the nature of the subject matter itself is difficult. You need to work problems to get this stuff in your head, and you have to be self-motivated to study if you're doing an online course. One criticism I have is that the "PhysicsNow" is worthless. They provide no explanation on the website.

If you are reading this review and you need the book, I'll send you the one I have if I still have it. E-mail me at scott340pd@email.com if you're interested. Give me time to check my email account, because this is one I don't use often.

I don't think this book explains concepts very well and it's even worse at teaching how to build on them. Some of the questions at the end of the chapter are very complex but, for people whose last supporting math class was years ago, the chapter often lacks thoroughly worked up examples to help figure out how to build the equation.

In the questions at the end of each chapter there are several problems that have on line coaching at the PHYSICS NOW web site, indicated by the PHYSICS NOW icon. Very often the problems that are indicated in the book are not the ones coached on line.

Volume 2 is published as a separate book but it is really the second half of volume 1. Many of the concepts in volume 2 are dependent on concepts, equations and other data presented in volume 1, but the book lacks an index containing this important information for those who took the first semester long enough ago to have sold the book. DO NOT BUY VOLUME 2 UNLESS YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A FIRST SEMESTER BOOK.

I used this book for my physics class and I totally hate it. We will be using it again for next semester and I wish they would use a different one. If you are a teacher, please save your studernts from the headache! pick a better book!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2005-10-09

Do not waste your money on this textbook! Even the most basic concepts are poorly explained. Examples are random and rarely help to reinforce the lesson. You can find a much better physics book for a fraction of the price. I can't believe they published this book!!

1 out of 5 stars less than one star... but since there's no zero.......2004-03-12

This is one of the poorest books I've ever used for learning any subject. This is simply NOT GOING TO WORK if you learn by reading/studying, rather than in class.

I already have a college degree, and I've read thousands of books, and studied from many. Rarely have I found a book this thick that has so little
                      1) EXPLANATION OF CORE CONCEPTS,
                      or
                      2) THOROUGHLY WORKED EXAMPLES OF PROBLEMS.

There is a lot of verbiage but that is all.

DO NOT WASTE TIME WITH THIS BOOK. Without a GOOD teacher, this book is beyond totally useless. With a teacher one can use this book for homework problems, but nothing more.

Since I am doing this as a pre-requisite for medical school, I am using the web and a number of other texts instead. I wish I could find a good thorough text though.

this manual does not have all the answers or explanations to them. the detail is poor, and none of the conceptual questions or multiple choice have answers at all. it helps sometimes, but comes up short often.

My professor likes to give practice problems from the even section and he does not provide solutions, so I bought this book. One BIG problem, it does not have the even problems, so now I am in the same boat as before. Extremely upset that this is not advertised in the description. This is a college level book and it ridiculous that all the answers are not answered.

5 out of 5 stars Best Algebra Based Physics Text.......2002-12-30

Physics is a difficult subject. This text does an admirable job of making a difficult subject easier.

There are advantages and disadvantages to disallowing the writer to use calculus in writing the material. Some formulas require calculus to derive and so must be either taken on faith as true, or the derivations looked up in a calculus based test. Fortunately the times when this issue comes up are few enough to not seriously hamper the flow of the book.

This book may be read as a first book on Physics. I strongly recommend the book Conceptual Physics by Hewitt for a running start at the subject.

Members of the lay public interested in physics may read both of these texts, as they are at introductory level and contains material on classical as well as modern physics.

The units are in SI ( metric ) which simplifies the math.

The Wilson and Buffa text has Color photos of natural phenomenon and situations that illustrate the physics under discussion. There examples are intermixed throughout showing how to work problems involving the principles involved.

I believe this book is an important part of a well rounded education. Physics is NOT an easy topic. If it were, then Newton would have developed theories on relativity and gravity waves. This book does what it was designed to do, that is assist beginners in starting their journey.

I read the book. I found it to be fun.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Great.......2002-09-27

While I haven't had the pleasure of having Buffa for a professor (and by all accounts I'm planning on avoiding it), the book really isn't that bad. The sample problems are helpful and the escalating difficulty is appreaciated.

The downside is that he tends to get bogged down in little details that aren't really as important as he makes them out to be--especially considering that the book is for people who don't need calc-based Physics (read life science majors, and all non-science related majors who need a GE), and occasionally the problems seem totally unrelated to what has been presented in the text.

Still, as far as text books go, this one isn't bad and if you have a good teacher to go along, it'll serve you just fine.

I have had the pleasure of being taught Physics by Brian Jones at CSU from this book, and I will say that although I have personally had an aversion and dread of taking a physics class, Brian's enthusiasm, knowledge, real-life applications, participation and integration with this text have made Physics into my favorite class this semester (and I am a Biomedical Science major). This text is extremely readable, even engrossing; moreover, it thoroughly covers the major principles of physics without losing the reader. The clever integration of real-world examples helps to visualize physics as the amazing observation and understanding tool of the "magical" aspects of the world and the greater universe surrounding us. The problems in the book are workable, and there are plenty of examples in the text that relate to the problems to help solve them. Brian used to write problems for the MCAT, and some of the problems in the book are geared for biology applications, so this would be a great study tool for the MCAT as well. This text does not require any calculus, but a strong understanding of trigonometry is essential. As an aside, Brian is devoted to making physics fun and interesting and has taught physics all over the world, including in Africa. His Little Shop of Physics (go to littleshop.physics.colostate.edu/) is an extraordinary traveling teaching tool geared to elementary school students--my own children have been turned on to a love of science by this program.

I love all of Lynn Gardner's books. I have read all of them many times through. They keep you breathless from the moment you open to the first page to the last. The discriptions in the book let you picture the whole story in your mind. These are some of the best books ever written.
