Modern Physics Course.......2006-11-15

As a college student taking Modern Physics, I found this book to be very helpful with my homework. Many of the subjects covered in my course were found to also be in the Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics. What it does severely lack in is explanation. For me, I skipped using it to learn anything, and just focused on following the example problems step-by-step (with different numbers, of course!) For the average student looking for a little help, I'd definitely suggest this book!

A good book for engineers studying modern physics.......2006-08-26

Unlike other reviewers, I found that this book hits all of the main points that you are likely to run across in an undergraduate course on Modern Physics. I particularly liked the short explanations on the various subtopics, the numerous and clear diagrams, as well as the helpful examples.

The other reviewers are correct in that this book takes a different approach from most textbooks on Modern Physics, but I feel that this is most helpful to engineering students. This is because the modern physics textbooks I have examined tend to be abstract and, quite frankly, geared towards and - of course - written by physicists. Engineers need a more practical and visual problem-oriented viewpoint to understand the subject matter than is provided in such books. The content of this outline does tend to jump around a great deal, and you may need to search carefully for the subject matter you are needing help with, but most of it should be in this outline somewhere. The book does come up a little short on the quantum end of things, and if you need specific help with that subject I recommend the "Schaum's Outline of Quantum Mechanics", which is also quite helpful.

If you are a student of pure physics, you might not find this outline as helpful as the engineering students probably will.

Didn't fit my course..........2004-10-27

This didn't fit in with the book we were using: "Modern Physics" by Tipler and Llewellyn. This book completely neglected much of the quantum portion. Be sure to buy that book also. Kind of elementary.

Yet another great Schaum's outline book.......2000-06-30

Much like the rest of the Outline series, this book is great. It covers pretty much all the important topics in pretty good detail. It starts off fairly gently but the problems (worked and otherwise) are good and challenging (for me at least). This book would be great companion to any undergraduate modern physics course.

Cecil Graham , the cynical hero.......2006-08-11

Melodramatics from Lady Windermere. Mrs. Erlynne and Lord Windermere meeting but incomprehensibly deaf to the rumors about them. Yes, this is not Oscar Wilde's best play but, oh, the zingers he does get in, namely through Cecil Graham. Example: "Well, there's nothing in the world like the devotion of a married woman. It's a thing no married man knows anything about." Read it for the pithy lines.

Lady Windermere.......2005-08-05

I have always enjoyed all of Oscar Wilde's works, but this is not very good compared with the others, but none the less still worth reading. The characters were sort of dull, but the plot intresting which made up for it. I'd reccomend this to fans of Oscar Wilde, but if you have just discovered Wilde, skip this and start with either, "The picture of dorian gray" or "the importance of being Earnest".

Lady Windermere's Fan.......2004-03-23

I just wanted to say that i really love this play and that i highly suggest that everyone should read this funny and witty masterpiece. Lady Windermere is so naive but i liked the bit when she threatens to slap Mrs Erlynne across the face. That's what i call Girl Power!!

Anyway, i wanted to know if there are any notes to accompany this play. I need some notes that focus on the language of the play, social context, characters, etc.

I would be eternally grateful if anyone could help.

How can women survive in victorian society.......2003-05-23

Oscar Wilde entirely dedicates this play to the exploration of the way a woman can be saved from destruction in this society of appearances. A woman was the victim of an imbroglio in the past and abandoned her daughter. This woman comes back and the daughter ignores her relation to her. She is brought back into societry by the daughter's husband who knows the truth but does not want his wife to know it. But there is some kind of malediction that flies over the heads of these women. The daughter nearly does the same mistake as her mother but she is saved by her mother who accepts to be tainted in her daughter's place. Bus Oscar Wilde must think there is some kind of reward for a good deed and all is well that ends well, and this play has a happy ending. In spite of all the melodramatic sentimentalese atmosphere, Oscar Wilde definitely explores in this play the great disadvantage of a woman in society. Men can do nearly all they want. Women are extremely limited and have to walk a very straight and narrow line. Oscar Wilde seems to be ahead of his time as for the fate of women: he seems to aspire for real equality for them, though he shows in all possible ways that this is impossible in his society.

My first experience reading Oscar Wilde... and certainly not my last.

Wilde's sardonic wit and ineffable satire had me enchanted from page one. Wilde writes with devastatingly appealing witticisms, and with a style and cleverness matched by few other authors. It is said that he is one of the more oft-quoted authors in the English language, and I now understand why.

Not so funny.......2007-04-19

I have decided that since so many people are obviously blind to how dumb this play is, I should write a review to enlighten anyone that might read it. The humor is dated and because of that, very boring. The situations are completely inconceivable and it makes no sense! The characters are flat and serve no real purpose. I suggest that no one else ever ever read this play.

The Importance of the whole Text.......2004-11-09

An extraordinary play; witty, profound and beautiful. And even better if you read all of it. Which you won't if you buy the Penguin copy with Edith Evans on the front, since this version is heavily abridged. Which is fine except the publishers make no mention of this at all in the volume. And cultural vandalism of this kind should, I feel at least be acknowledged.

It Is Impotant To Be Earnest.......2003-10-06

I had no knowledge of Oscar Wilde and had only seen ten minutes of the movie, The Importance of Being Earnest, as I flipped through the cable channels on my television. However, due to a class that I am enrolled in, not only do I now know who he is but I am blessed to have been introduced to his work.

The Importance of Being Earnest, makes a very humorous yet profound commentary on money, marriage, status and image as it pertains to the aristocracy of that time. It seems that Oscar Wilde utilized this medium of artistic expression to cleverly expose the twisted way that those with wealth perceived themselves and the lengths they would go to the preserve that perception. It has been referred to as a "comedy of manners" because so much of what defined or distinguished the aristocracy from the common man was not necessarily the wealth that they actually had but what men and women did to appear like they had it.

Ernest, who is the main character in the play, has done all of what is necessary to appear as though he comes from wealth. He wears the clothing, keeps the company and talks the talk of the aristocrat. However what he soon finds out is that all of those whom he is trying to impress and fit in with, have more unresolved issues in their closet than he does. I believe Wilde addresses this social paradox with impeccable wit and an amazing sense of human psychology. He not only challenged those who belonged to the aristocracy to examine what they placed value in, but continues to challenge each reader today, that these superficial values might not stand as valuable at all.

The importance of reading these plays!.......2003-09-07

While Oscar Wilde is not Shakespeare unarguably the best playwright, he is incredibly good and all three plays show it. Salome is a short 'biblical' play, Lady Windermere's Fan is a bit longer and with the exception of the naivete suffered by the Lady of the title incredibly well written as well. However, The Importance of Being Earnest is by far the best play in this collection. Two men whom are trying to get away with pulling a fast one on their girlfriends and two women who think they know whats going on. Throw in a misplaced bag with a baby inside, an overbearing British matriarch, and a Governess with a past and you have a laugh out loud comedy. Who knew the British could be so funny...when written about anyway.
