Book Description
As a result of the key advances made more than 30 years ago, specifically the ability to isolate islets of Langerhans from the pancreas, the ability to measure insulin accurately by immunoasay, and the development of microchemical techniques for studying cells and their components, many research volumes, symposium reports, and original papers have been produced. This explosion of interest has probably had at least three stimuli:
1. the inherent scientific interest in understanding secretion of the pancreatic ß-cell
2. the ß-cells relevance to a very common disease
3. the availability of funding from specific sources related to diabetes research, for instance, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and the British Diabetic Association.
As a result of all this activity, detailed scientific literature including research reviews are readily available.
Surprisingly enough, there are relatively few attempts to summarize this great bulk of knowledge in a way that is accessible to the newcomer to this field and this book is intended to bridge this gap.

Modern Electrochemistry 2A: Fundamentals of Electrodics
ASIN: 0471188581 |
Book Description
Offering a thorough explanation of electrode kinetics, this textbook emphasizes physical phenomena-rather than mathematical formalism-and elucidates the underlying principles of the different experimental techniques. Assuming an elementary knowledge of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics and minimal mathematical skills, coverage explores the arguments of two primary schools of thought: electrode kinetics and interfacial electrochemistry viewed as a branch of physical chemistry, and from the perspective of analytical chemistry.

String Theory and M-Theory: A Modern Introduction
ASIN: 0521831431 |
Book Description
An accessible introduction to string theory, this book provides a detailed and self-contained demonstration of the main concepts involved. The first part deals with basic ideas, reviewing special relativity and electromagnetism while introducing the concept of extra dimensions. D-branes and the classical dynamics of relativistic strings are discussed next, and the quantization of open and closed bosonic strings in the light-cone gauge, along with a brief introduction to superstrings. The second part begins with a detailed study of D-branes followed by string thermodynamics. It discusses possible physical applications, and covers T-duality of open and closed strings, electromagnetic fields on D-branes, Born/Infeld electrodynamics, covariant string quantization and string interactions. Primarily aimed as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, it will also be ideal for a wide range of scientists and mathematicians who are curious about string theory.
Customer Reviews:
An undergraduate's textbook.......2007-03-09
For any advanced undergraduate student in physics who is interested in string theory, this book is ideal. It starts off very easily, reviewing concepts of free point particle actions in special relativity and then gradually introduces classical strings, which are then quantised in the light-cone gauge. It doesn' get too technical, but it provides one with a good foundation in string theory's concepts. The topics are discussed very clearly, both in words and in formulae. At the end of the book, black holes are discussed very briefly (in connection with the Hagedoorn temperature) in an easy way, covariant quantisation (as an "improvement" on the light-cone gauge, which does not preserve Lorentz invariance all the way through), and D-branes.
This book is intended for advanced undergraduates, but for those who find beginning graduate courses in string theory too complicated at the outset, buy this one, read it and you'll probably understand more of the classics by Polchinski or Green/Schwarz/Witten. Those who have a solid knowledge of QFT might go passed this book, but it might be a good back-up for what more standard textbooks might call "trivial calculations".
The long way to learning string theory.......2007-03-08
Until chapter 10, the book is a pleasure to read. It is very systematic, everything is explained in great detail, and the different concepts are very clear and well exposed. The author succeeds in turning a rather obscure scientific topic into an exciting adventure. If I should judge the book only for this first part, I would give it 5 stars. In fact the book is misleading since when you start reading, you get the illusion string theory can be made accessible even for beginners with an average background.
However, this illusion is in vain since the panorama changes dramatically in chapter 10, where the author enters directly into quantum field theory, without any further preparation. An this is the real problem, because the author who developed from the ground up the classical approach to strings mechanics, takes for granted the reader is highly knowledged in quantum mechanics. In spite of his efforts to introduce the subject in successive approximations, all is in vain because the subject is too intricate. The book is not any more systematic for readers lacking adequate quantum theory background.
Certainly this is not a book for beginners. The book requires previous deep understanding of quantum mechanics. Beginners can still learn some interesting concepts from the first part of the book, but a complete reading would require deep study of less advanced quantum mechanics bibliography. That said, I must also point out if the level of the book is maintained in its second part, it may become a top ten for more advanced readers.
Hopelessly dated.......2007-01-27
In spite of being published only two years ago, this book does not make any mention of Professor Susskind's Landscape theory, the single most important advancement in string theory since anomaly cancellation was discovered. The book does a disservice to the students it is intended for, letting them think they understand string theory while depriving them of key mathematical and physical concepts, such as the Lanscape or Calabi Yau manifolds.
Satisfy curiosity but not envision advancement.......2006-11-10
I still think advanced physics needs advanced mathematics to explain and explore. With limited depth of mathematics in this book, even though lots of ideas can be expressed, the process is tedious. This introductory book can satisfy my curiosity but not enough to envision the potential study advancement.
Emanuel Degni.......2006-11-10
Top quality and well revised.
To emit my opinion I will have to complete the readings, but before that I am studying Quantum mechanics and Relativity

Book Description
This ground-breaking book celebrates the bimillennial anniversary of the inception of Ovid's Fasti by offering a variety of approaches to Ovid's poem on the Roman religious calendar. It is edited by Geraldine Herbert-Brown, whose Ovid and the Fasti (OUP, 1994) first highlighted the value of the poem as an important source for the late Augustan and early Tiberian period. The volume does not aim at consensus but brings together experts from around the world without allowing any single prejudice to prevail. It will engage all those interested in the relationship between literature and society during the early Roman Principate.

Book Description
Fasti is both a calendar of daily rituals and a witty sequence of stories. Using the first six months of the Roman religious calendar as a frame, Ovid weaves Greek and Roman history and mythology, astronomical observations and political tidbits into a lively tapestry shot through with uncomfortable political echoes. Augustus tried to control his subjects by imposing his own accounts of history and an annual cycle of festivals on them, but Ovid brilliantly debunks Augustus's versions with his own reflections on patriotism, militarism, and public virtue with earthy images of sensual pleasures and sexual adventures.
From the description of Mars' rape of Silvia--"Mars sees her, desires what he sees, takes what he desires"--with its echoes of Julius Caesar's famous boast, to the portrait of Romulus as a violent thug and impious rapist, Ovid debunks official heroes and dismantles the foundations of Rome's power structures. Written while Ovid was in exile, Fasti is at once a wonderfully witty sequence of stories and a courageous political manifesto.

wrong book.......2004-06-17
The review posted above is for the Loeb edition of Ovid, which is very different from Fantham's edition.
Counting the days, at "the end of the world"..........2004-01-21
This one volume work in the Loeb Classical Series (# 253) is
Ovid's remarkable combining of poetry, myth, astrology,
astronomy, and commentary on Rome.
Apparently the work was written, or completed, while
Ovid was in exile in what is today Romania (in the
ancient city of Tomis), having been sent there by the
Emperor Augustus.
Ovid's life there must have been misery, anguish, and
hardship (how different from the famous poet all
Rome had talked about before his fall!). The poems
about that exile, along with letters which he sent back
to Rome, can be found in Loeb Classical volume, # 151,
-Tristia, Ex Ponto- (ISBN: 0674991672).
This present volume "is a poetical treatise on the
Roman calendar, which it discusses in chronological
order, beginning with the first day of January and
ending with the last day of June, where it stops
abruptly." (Introduction.) Ovid had intended to
write 12 parts to the work, but we only have the
first six. The author of the Introduction makes
some scholarly speculations about what happened to
the other six parts, which are very interesting.
This Loeb version is translated by James G. Frazer,
who himself had orginally published a 5-volume edition
of the -Fasti-, but trimmed a bit of his scholarly
commentary in order to produce this one-volume edition
for the Loeb series. Frazer (1854 - 1941) was a
British anthropologist, folklorist, and classical
scholar; his 12 volume opus, -The Golden Bough-,
is a world-famous work on comparative ancient religions,
myth, and cultural rites.
Ovid, himself, was exremely interested not only
in poetry, but in myth and cultural rites as well. That
is clearly evidenced in the -Fasti-. Here is an example
of the combining of poetry, with myth, and astrology/
astronomy from March 5: "When from her saffron cheeks
Tithonous' spouse shall have begun to shed the dew /
at the time of the fifth morn, the constellation,
whether it be the Bear-ward or the sluggard Bootes,
will have sunk and will escape thy sight. But not
so will the Grape-gatherer escape thee." There is
more to the quote which expands on the myth of the
origin of the constellation. There are excellent
notes to explain allusions, as well as a scholarly
Introduction to the volume.
Though Ovid was trying to find some way to gain
either commutation or release from his exile, he was
not successful (either under Augustus or his successor,
the Emperor Tiberius). Still, though seeking clemency,
Ovid nonetheless takes satiric swipes at Rome's
losing of ancient values. Ovid died in exile and
was buried in Tomis. "Sic transit gloria mundi."
-- Robert Kilgore.
"A Rich Storehouse for Roman Religion and Ritual".......2002-09-19
Publius Ovidius Naso's "Fasti" (calendar) is undoubtedly his most neglected piece of literature. It is justifiably belittled by his timeless epic the "Metamorphoses," it stands out as dull and lifeless when compared with the bawdy and lusty "Amores" and "Ars Amortoria," and it never reaches the emotional appeal of his famed "Heroides." Although the "Fasti" is a rich storehouse for Roman astronomy, religion, and ritual. And at times--mostly in the prologues to each of the calendars' months--Ovid takes his poetry to a level of creativity and depth that rivals his other poems; but unfortunately these are only short-lived. Another setback to the "Fasti" is the fact only six months out of the calendar year remain (January to June). It is up to question whether or not they were ever finished or simply didn't survive through the centuries; but nonetheless this misfortune is yet another hard knock for the "Fasti." It is certainly difficult to give Rome's most profound poet such a low rating, but when this is sized up with his other works, it doesn't stand a chance.

Book Description
After a period of neglect, Ovid's elegiac poem on the Roman calendar has been the focus of much recent scholarship. In her comprehensive and scholarly study of the final book, Joy Littlewood analyses Ovid's account of the origins of the festivals of June, demonstrating that Book 6 is effectively a commemoration of Roman War, and elegantly provides a framing bracket to balance the opening celebration of Peace in Book 1. She explores the subtle interweaving of pietas and virtus in Roman religion and its relationship to Augustan ideology, the depth and accuracy of Ovid's antiquarianism, and his audacious expansion of generic boundaries.

Book Description
This book considers the relationship between the Fasti, Ovid's long poem on the Roman calendar, and the calendar itself, conceived of as consisting both in the rites and commemorations it organizes and in its graphic representation. The Fasti treats the calendar, recently revised by Caesar and Augustus, as its most important cultural model and as a quasi-literary 'intertext': the poem simultaneously reshapes and is itself shaped by the calendar. The study includes chapters on Book 4 and the rites of April, on the addition of Julio-Claudian holidays to the calendar, and on the final two books of the poem as shaped by the renaming of the months Quintilis and Sextilis for Julius Caesar and Augustus.

Time Well Spent.......2000-07-11
This book is a scholarly study of a poem by the Roman poet Ovid, who lived from 43 B.C. to 17 A.D. Composed at about the same time as his more famous Metamorphoses, the Fasti is one of Ovid's lesser-known works. In this poem based on the Roman calendar, Ovid interviews gods and citizens as he investigates the origins of Rome (why did Romulus kill Remus? what happened to Julius Caesar after he was assassinated on the Ides of March?). He also discusses Roman holidays, religious customs, and religious beliefs (why do naked men run around the Palatine striking women with goat-skins on the Lupercalia? did Mars ever have an affair with Minerva? how was the constellation Orion created?).
Newlands' book is a learned and well-written discussion of Ovid's Fasti. One of the main problems that she addresses implicitly throughout her study is the problem of Ovid's political sympathies. In 8 A.D., while Ovid was still writing the Fasti, he was banished from Rome by the emperor Augustus. No one has ever discovered exactly why he was punished in this way. Scholarly debates rage over whether Ovid's tone in the Fasti, while overtly laudatory towards Augustus, might actually be subversive, subtly challenging the emperor's political establishment. Newlands does an excellent job of addressing this question through close attention to exactly how Ovid chooses to tell his tales of Rome and its history. She shows that Ovid was not rigidly following the Roman calendar as he wrote; rather, the poet selected and arranged his material carefully to create certain impressions and ideas. Newlands' title, Playing With Time, alludes to the ways in which both Ovid and Augustus managed to construct a particular shape for the Roman calendar (a record of Roman time), and thus for the historical and religious events that it commemorated. She demonstrates that even an apparently objective document like a calendar is subject to manipulation, on the one hand by a skilled poet and on the other by a powerful ruler who added his and his family members' birthdays and military victories to the roster of official Roman holidays.
This book is directed primarily at a scholarly audience, and as a graduate student, I found it extremely useful and informative. However, those who would like to learn more about Roman poetry or the Augustan Age of Rome may also find things to enjoy in this engaging study.

Classic presentation.......2007-09-27
This presentation of Ovid's Fasti is well-done certainly. The book is a reprint of text put together in the 1880's for Latin students. There are notes to assist translation in the back which are very useful as well. Notably, there are a few variations in the Latin text that are found in this book and, for instance, the Loeb Classical Library edition. For the most part, this is probably due to different decisions by scholars over the years pulling from manuscripts that can sometimes be hard to read, e.g. - "Tatius" vs. "tacitos" in the first month. As well, in this book, some letters, like "c" will look like "e," leading to temporary confusion until one realizes that "tune" is not a Latin word but that "tunc" is. This is probably due to the age of the book and the related printing technology of the time. At any rate, the book is well done and one of few texts available for a Latin student studying the Fasti in whole. One may find exerpts here and there from the Fasti in Latin readers, but this book is the whole thing. Note also that this is not an English translation. All the poem is presented in Latin only. However, the rewards of reading this poem in the Latin are great.
