Book Description
In this unique book, Sir Donald Harrison draws on his wide-ranging experience as a surgeon and comparative anatomist to produce an authoritative and detailed account of the anatomy and physiology of the mammalian larynx. His investigation of the larynx has involved the study of over 1200 specimens of mammalian larynges from around the world, as well as using data from his own clinical experiences. The comparative morphology of the larynx is discussed from a developmental and functional perspective, and the involvement of the larynx in respiration, locomotion and vocalization is highlighted. Throughout the book the relationship of structure to function is stressed, and the clinical relevance of features of the human larynx is emphasized.

Book Description
The Science of Radio explains the working and charts the development of the ordinary AM radio receiver, which has become an integral part of our lives in the 80 years since its invention. As well as showing the reader the growth of technology in this century, the story of AM radio can provide a unique insight into the basics of electrical engineering, making the primary concepts and applications visual and comprehensible. Taking a "top down" approach to the subject, Nahin starts with a broad overview of radio as a sociological and technological phenomenon, then describes specific advances in research that made radio possible, moving through deeper levels of technical detail as the story progresses. Readers will see how various concepts and theories are combined to achieve specific practical results. And the book's "just in time" method of introducing mathematical and physical theory only as needed to understand a topic, helps readers gain a firm grasp of often elusive material. By focusing specifically on the workings of AM radio, The Science of Radio offers both a fascinating history of radio as an information and entertainment medium and a practical, applications-oriented introduction to electrical engineering. This second edition, written the same witty and accessible style as the first, also includes illustrative examples based on the popular MATLAB and Electronics Workbench programs now commonly used in engineering courses, as well as new technical material on differential amplifiers, more end-of-chapters problems, and additional historical discussion. About the author Paul J. Nahin is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of New Hampshire, and is the author of Oliver Heaviside: Sage In Solitude (IEEE Press); Time Machines: Time Travel In Physics, Metaphysics And Science Fiction, (AIP Press); and An Imaginary Tale; The Story Of The Square Root Of Minus One, (Princeton University Press).
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Written Books on AM Radio.......2004-10-25
As a physics student and a beginner analog circuit designer with an interest in RF circuit design, I can highly recommend this book. Most books on RF design simply jump to quickly and assume a bunch of prerequsite knowledge, and also assume you don't need to understand the physics (or science) of what is going on, but only understand the models to be used to plug numbers into. I've had a hard time putting this book down, it is really great. It will definitely help you gain an intutive understanding of HOW IT ALL WORKS! Also, after reading all about spark radios, I discovered that my uncle was a spark radio operator in WWII! Now I really understand what he did!
With or without Matlab, it is still the best radio book.......2004-06-27
Mr.Nahin, could you please write more books like this... ?
a good book with bad opinions.......2002-08-29
This is an excellent book which combines the history, the
mathematics and the physics of radio. It is not a textbook
and you need to know calculus and physics to understand its
technical chapters. It has ten appendices, they explain the
"bottom" material or background needed in the book. However,
the all book is well written and it has an excellent presentation.
I think that the author's opinions about the
radio developers such as Marconi, DeForest and Tesla
are out of place in a book like this. So I gave three starts.
Well done.......2001-08-13
I have been a fan of Paul Nahin's writting since I came across his book an imaginary tale ... In this text he clearly describes the history as well as the EE of radio. It is an excellent book and I especially enjoyed the appendices and matlab and electronics workbench examples.

Book Description
One critic in the 1950s acidly declared them the “Bleat Generation.” Yet the Beats have survived their worst publicity. No matter that J. Edgar Hoover cited them and communists as the two greatest threats to American society, Allen Ginsberg’s Howl is now considered by many to be the most influential poem by an American in the twentieth century and Jack Kerouac’s bestselling and groundbreaking novel On the Road stands boldly in the front ranks of America’s literary heritage. This handsome new volume in a successful series of generously illustrated and documented literary reference works offers a fresh perspective both on the literary legacy of the Beat Generation—Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassady, Gregory Corso, John Clellon Holmes, and Gary Snyder—and on their once-notorious bohemian lifestyle that embraced nonconformity, interracial relationships, relaxed sexual mores, espresso, drugs, and jazz. An ample selection of photographs, manuscript reproductions and book jackets, extracts from personal correspondence as well as reviews and interviews, all serve to illuminate the substance of the Beats’ rebellion against the tyranny of social convention and of literary orthodoxy. For the restless journey of the Beats—from Greenwich Village to San Francisco to Mexico to Europe and North Africa—also proved to be a continuous quest, one that ended not simply in the experience itself but in landmark novels like William Burroughs’s Naked Lunch and poems like Gregory Corso’s “BOMB.”
Customer Reviews:
Remembering the other fifties.......2005-09-01
I grew up 30 blocks or so from the psychic heart of the Beat Generation . . . same place, same time, but a different world. I found Beat Generation works hard to read, hard to understand, until Matt Theado's excellent reference book. To "get" the Beat Generation you have to understand the world from their point of view. Providing us with a context -- the world through their eyes then -- makes the body of Beat Generation literature a lot more relevant now.
Excellent.......2005-01-21
I recieved this book for my birthday without knowing much about the Beats, but that changed quickly. The book details all the major literary players of the era with interviews, letters often supplimented with lithiographed reproductions of the originals so you get to see handwritten & type written pages along with photographs. A really easy book to read that can be picked up casually here and there, but would also be useful for an academic doing research. Hats off the the editor.

Mad to Be Saved: The Beats, the 50's, and Film
ASIN: 0809325632 |
Book Description
Film critic David Sterritt’s Screening the Beats: Media Culture and the Beat Sensibility showcases the social and aesthetic viewpoints of lynchpin Beat writers Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg, juxtaposing their artistry with 1950s culture and achieving what Kerouac might have called a “bookmovie” riff. In clear prose, Sterritt captures the raw energy of the Beats and joins in their celebration of aesthetic freakishness. Tapping into the diversified spirit of the Beat Generation and its nuanced relationship with postwar American culture, Sterritt considers how the Beats variously foreground, challenge, and illuminate major issues in Hollywood and avant-garde film, critical and cultural theory, and music in the mass-media age.
Sterritt engages the creative and spiritual facets of the Beats, emulating their desire to evoke ephemeral aspects of human existence. Dealing with both high and low cultures as well as various subcultures, he highlights the complementary contributions to cultural creativity made by these authors. Screening the Beats grapples with paradoxes in Beat writing, in particular the conflict between spiritual purity and secular connectedness, which often materialized in the beatific bebop spontaneity, Zen-like transcendentalism, and plain hipster smarts that characterized the writings of Kerouac, Burroughs, and Ginsberg.
This interdisciplinary study tackles such topics as Ginsberg’s and Kerouac’s uses of racial and ethnic stereotypes prevalent in the popular movies of the 1950s era; the uses and limitations of improvisation as a creative tool in literature, jazz, and film; Kerouac’s use of cinematic metaphor to evoke Buddhist concepts; and intersections of the grotesque and carnivalesque in works as seemingly diverse as autobiographical novels by Kerouac, a radio play by Antonin Artaud, cultural theories of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, and the boisterous lunacy of Three Stooges farce. Deftly threading literary, musical, and cinematic works with a colorful array of critical theories, Screening the Beats illuminates the relationship between American culture and the imaginative forces of the Beat Generation.

Customer Reviews:
Book that takes you to the heart of the 50s "Beat" scene........1998-03-24
This is a wonderful book filled with images of the beat coffeehouse hangouts in Greenwich village circa 50s and 60s. It is great to actually be able to view a photo of a poetry reading as it took place in one of these bohemian haunts. We are lucky that the author had the foresight to take photos in the smoke-filled coffeehouses and beat pads. I have a coffeehouse and the book is a great reference to utilize when trying to recapture the spirit and styling of the 50s coffeehouse.
"Beat Generation" worthy addition to any Beat collection.......1996-12-31
McDarrah's photograpic work evokes what it must have been like to frequent the bohemian scene of the late '50s and early '60's. Anyone who is greatly interested in the literature of this genre, but too young to have actual remembrances of this era, will find this work fascinating. Many of the photos have never been published before, and thus are a refreshing change from the standard photos of Kerouac, Ginsberg, and crew that have been served up so many times elsewhere. McDarrah, who I believe worked for the Village Voice at that time, has done a fine job in selecting the photos in this collection. My favorites are one of Diane DiPrima, perched on a piano reciting her poetry, and Herbert Huncke visiting Allen Ginsberg and attempting to fix the latter's broken TV. I also enjoyed the many pics of other accomplished, but lesser known figures of the era, and the establishments they frequented, such as the Cedars Bar & Grill

Book Description
Using a number of critical approaches, Michael Skau examines Gregory Corso's complex imagination, his humor, and his poetic techniques in dealing with America, the Beat generation, and death.
Skau covers the complete works of Corso, one of the four major Beat Generation writers (with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs) who attempted to provide an alternative to what they saw as the academic forms of literature dominating American writing through the 1940s and 1950s. The Beat option focused on ordinary people, spurning the cultural pretensions of the intelligentsia and using common language as well as the rhythms of actual speech. Corso, abandoned as a child by his mother, subjected to a variety of foster homes, and imprisoned as an adolescent, became an authentic voice of America's neglected streetwise youth. He embodies much of the tension, confusion, and rebellion that emerged in America after World War II and eventually crested in the 1960s.
Corso emphasizes social issues, yet risks undermining this significance by using wit, wordplay, and humor. While conceding mortality, he is adamant in refusing to acknowledge death's power. Even as he rebels against conventional literature, he still is enchanted by classicism and romanticism, often borrowing their techniques and idioms. Skau examines these complexities and seeming contradictions throughout Corso's career, showing that Corso finds value in inconsistency and vacillation. For him, as illustrated in the poems "Hair" and "Marriage," contradiction and ambivalence suggest the foundations of freedom of imagination.
In spite of Corso's significance as an American poet, Skau's is the first extensive study of his work, including his fiction. Skau also provides the first complete bibliography of Corso's published work in more than thirty years.
