Five stars for Physics B; Four stars for Physics C.......2007-06-24

I bought this and several other books to supplement my daughter's physics class. I also looked up the multiple choice questions that are available (1998 and 2004 are the only ones available at the time of this writing) as well as the free response questions for both B and C tests going back to 1998. Putting it all together, this book does a very good job of presenting the material you need to know for the test(s).

The book covers every topic found on the actual exams and is perfect for the Physics B exam. The examples and depth of knowledge required are spot on. The questions are a fair representation of what one would expect on the actual B exam.

Although it also covers material for Physics C, the book does so by providing only a minimum of extra material in its explanations on the Mechanics and E&M portion. Nonetheless, it still is a very good study guide for the Physics C as well (especially in comparison to most of the other guides which fall far shorter - see my other reviews).

One last piece of advice to the Physics C takers. Although this sounds anti-intellecutal, you need to memorize certain formulas for specific cases. For example, although escape velocity, Kepler's law for a circular orbit, and the velocity of a satellite in circular orbit around a planet can all be derived fairly easily from Newton's law of Gravitation, it is best to have the actual formula memorized in these specific cases. The reason is that the mulitple choice test does not give enough time to allow for there derivation. This is a shame on the test maker's part as it forces rote memorization which is antithetical to the purpose of having a general law which can be applied to a variety of situations.

This book is set up so that it is easy to use. Plan on spending a few weeks using the practice tests, reading sample answers, and really reading the parts you don't quite remember from class.

Maya Angelou is such an insightful writer. She has a very colorful background that explains why she is so well liked. She certainly knows about many, many aspects of life and has come a long way in her life. She is a true role model in the world. Not just for black women but for all women.

Wisdom, Inspiration, & Reflection.......2006-09-14

Maya Angelou is a prolific writer, and this book is more proof of that. This book was given to me by Maureen A. Fay, during her final year as President of the University of Detroit Mercy, my alma mater.

Each short chapter offers words of wisdom, inspiration, and reflection. One deals with the difficulty of death. Another on how to take a 24 hour vacation (buy the book for this, if nothing else!). One deals with struggling with faith. I read the book in one setting, but have gone over it again and again.

I am forever grateful to Sister Fay for giving me this book. Why not make it a gift for yourself & a friend. Of course, 5/5 stars!

Dead End.......2006-08-31

Every once in a while I like to pick up a book that is outside the realm of usual reading, and look for a surprise, or spark to keep the fires of imagination from dying out - it is with this mindset I picked up "Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now." And what did I find as a result of my maverick literary exploration? Ehh...

Ms. Angelou may not take anything for her journey, but based on the cover price she will take $17.00 to tell you a bit about it, and even this may not even seem like that bad a deal were it not for the fact that either her journey was bland, her insights wanting or her conclusions misguided - whatever the cause, this book is dreadful. If you are looking for the usual meaningless new age spiritual gobble-gook; i.e., about boundaries, respect, finding ones direction, learning what it means to be a women, etc. then this journey is for you - but if you see this nonsense as the nonsense it is, you will be best served my buckling up your shoes and journeying elsewhere.

A must-own book.......2006-03-11

I tend to borrow books from the library and use my limited funds to purchase only those that truly help me grown in some way. This book is one of those. I bought it before I had to return the library's copy. It is a small, easy-to-read book whose simplicity belies its wisdom and power. I have harvested some of that wisdom to assist me in conveying lessons and messages to others. Most recently, I used the essay "Death and the Legacy" as a reading for meditation at my grandma's memorial last month. My reading of that powerful piece inspired my cousin to read this anthology and to ask me for more Angelou recommendations. The essay that speaks most to me, however, is "New Directions," which I use to teach a seminar to people living with HIV. It is an inspiring essay which points out that we have "the right and the responsibility" to step off paths which are not working for us. What a great message of personal accountability! This is truly a wonderful book--my favorite among many Angelou books that I love.
