Physiological Diversity and Its Ecological Implications
John I. Spicer , and Kevin J. Gaston Manufacturer: Blackwell Publishing Limited ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0632054522 |
Book Description
Ecologists have always believed, at least to a certain extent, that physiological mechanisms serve to underpin ecological patterns. However, their importance has traditionally been at best underestimated and at worst ignored, with physiological variation being dismissed as either an irrelevance or else as random noise/error. Spicer and Gaston make a convincing argument that the precise physiology does matter!In contrast to previous works which have attempted to integrate ecology and physiology, Physiological Diversity adopts a completely different, and more controversial, approach in tackling the physiology first before moving on to consider the implications for ecology. This is timely given the recent and considerable interest in the mechanisms underlying ecological patterns. Indeed, many of these mechanisms are physiological.This textbook provides a contemporary summary of physiological diversity as it occurs at different hierarchical levels (individual, population, species etc.), and the implications of such diversity for ecology and, by implication, evolution. It reviews what is known of physiological diversity and in doing so exposes the reader to all the key works in the field. It also portrays many of these studies in a completely new light, thereby serving as an agenda for, and impetus to, the future study of physiological variation.Physiological Diversity will be of relevance to senior undergraduates, postgraduates and professional researchers in the fields of ecology, ecological physiology, ecotoxicology, environmental biology and conservation. The book spans both terrestrial and marine systems.

Model-Based Control of Particulate Processes (Particle Technology Series)
P.D. Christofides Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402009364 |
Book Description
The interest in control of particulate processes has been triggered by the need to achieve tight distributed control of size distributions that greatly influence particulate product properties and quality. Drawing from recent advances in dynamics of infinite-dimensional systems and nonlinear control theory, control of particulate processes using population balances has evolved into a very active research area within the field of process control. This book - the first of its kind - presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear, robust and constrained feedback controllers for broad classes of particulate process models and illustrates their applications to industrially-important crystallization, aerosol and thermal spray processes. The controllers use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output tracking, attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty and handling of actuator saturation.

Book Description
Designed for undergraduate juvenile delinquency courses, this book actively involves students in the literature of the discipline, presents the field in a format that is accessible, understandable, and enjoyable, and is edited by well-known scholars who are experienced researchers and teachers. · The readings in this anthology have been very carefully edited and pruned by the Editors so that undergraduate students can easily read them without getting bogged down or confused and lost in the technical, methodological details. · At no additional cost, we have included 5 substantial data analysis exercises spread throughout the book. These exercises not only teach students the basic of SPSS, the "standard" data analysis software in social science, but also show them how they can test the delinquency theories and propositions covered in the reader, using current delinquency data packaged with the book. This absolutely unique feature is structured into fill-in-the-blank exercise sets that are easy to grade for large numbers of students by a single instructor. · Over 150 very good questions have been put together for the readings so that instructors can easily test, even in large courses, whether or not their students are keeping up with the reading. · A separate instructor's manual (with more tests) is also available.

Reading, Writing, and Rage : The Terrible Price Paid by Victims of School Failure

ASIN: 0965025209 |
Book Description
This non-fictional account of Tony Petri, learning disabled but gifted teenager, is written in compelling docudrama form to help the reader understand:*the controlled rage that is a hidden byproduct of school failure;
*the frustration of the help-seeking process;
*the powerlessness of everyone involved in that process--students, families, teachers, and helping professionals;
*the ultimate hope for reversal of both the failure and the rage.
By reconstructing Tony's life and each affront to his sensitivies and self-worth, we see another kind of failure--not of the boy but of the school and professional systems--failure to listen to what was really happening for Tony, and failure to really communicate with each other.
