        Book Description

This textbook deals with the theoretical basis of chemical equilibria and chemical changes and emphasizes the properties of phase diagrams. The author treats the field from a modern perspective. He takes into account the dramatic changes in the methods of applying thermodynamics caused by the development both of computer operated programs for sophisticated equilibrium calculations and of extensive databases containing thermodynamic parameter values for individual phases from which all thermodynamic properties may be calculated. This new situation has inspired a new approach to the teaching of basic thermodynamics. Illustrative examples of thermodynamic modeling are also given, and the book contains many exercises and worked solutions. This modern text will be of value to undergraduate and graduate students in materials science and chemistry.

          Book Description

Polymeric materials include plastics, gels, synthetic fibres, and rubbers. They are all-important both in industry and in daily life. Unlike liquid water, ice, or sugar solution, polymers are not homogeneous. They are said to consist of two or more phases, and their production and processing, as well as their properties and uses, depend on an understanding of the transitions that take place between these phases. Over the last two decades, phase diagrams of considerably complexity have begun to appear in the polymer literature. Phase transitions occur abundantly in polymer production and processing, are often encountered in poymer research, or are instrumental in laboratory methods of polymer characterization. This new textbook uses fundamental principles to classify phase separation phenomena in polymer systems, and describes simple molecular models explaining the observed behaviour. It supplies insight in the reading and construction of complex phase diagrams, as well as an understanding of the relationships that must exist between different phase transitions. Containing hundreds of diagrams, exercises at chapter ends, and several useful appendices, this text should be useful for anyone teaching or studying a course in polymer science.

          Book Description

This graduate-level textbook provides an introduction to the practical application of phase diagrams. It is intended for students and researchers in chemistry, metallurgy, mineralogy, and materials science as well as in engineering and physics. Heterogeneous equilibria are described by a minimum of theory illustrated by practical examples and realistic case discussions from the different fields of application. The treatment of the physical and energetic background of phase equilibria leads to the discussion of the thermodynamics of mixtures and the correlation between energetics and composition. Thus, tools for the prediction of energetic, structural, and physical quantities are provided. The authors treat the nucleation of phase transitions, the production and stability of technologically important metastable phases, and metallic glasses. Furthermore, the text also concisely presents the thermodynamics and composition of polymer systems.

                Book Description

This monograph acts as a benchmark to current achievements in the field of Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry, often called CALPHAD which is an acronym for Computer CALculation of PHAse Diagrams. It also acts as a guide to both the basic background of the subject area and the cutting edge of the topic, combining comprehensive discussions of the underlying physical principles of the CALPHAD method with detailed descriptions of their application to real complex multi-component materials.

Approaches which combine both thermodynamic and kinetic models to interpret non-equilibrium phase transformations are also reviewed.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for the serious student.......2004-10-13

Reif reads like thermodynamics is a brand new result and he has written the first giant paper on it. Not only does this book cover every area under the Sun, from the law of mass action to kinetic theory, but he develops each topic in a formal way, with logical consistency and that curious, gray-haired insight.

I continually look to Reif when more "advanced" books fumble explanations. With the firm conceptual grounding I get there, I can then intuit what other authors are trying to convey. How many astute readers of other thermodynamics textbooks have any idea when Boltzmann's canonical distribution can be used? Or who know the difference between this and Boltzmann's equation?

If you are an instructor, the illuminating end-of-chapter problems will be a boon. If you are a student, they will also be, yet less appreciated likely. No matter who you are, if you want to really know thermo and stat mech and are willing to _think_, then buy this book before some competing, flashy, colorized textbook drives it out of print.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for a thinking man. Not for novices........2004-01-24

One thing that distinguishes this book from the rest on stat mech is its emphasis on the physical content behind the equations. The author takes great pain to develop and elucidate, at every turn, a coherent physical picture for the edifice of statistical mechanics, in much the same style as the classic book by Tolman. However, if you are learning stat mech/thermo for the first time, you probably will be too busy familiarizing yourself with the equations to be able to appreciate the value of his explanations and motivations, which may just seem pointless rants. So, simply, if you are a newbie, try one of the more mediocre textbooks on stat mech, to learn the subject at a superficial level. Once you've mastered the more superficial stuff, you will come around to love this book, assuming that you are a reflective person.

1 out of 5 stars one of the worst textbooks ever written.......2003-03-10

I suspect the text was actually designed to inefficiently convey ideas. I cant believe someone has not written a student guide to fill in the holes for all the subtle leaps, overwhich students are expected to understand and apply.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but a bit light........2002-08-07

This book left me with two different impressions. On one hand,
it is extremely well readable (in fact, some explanations are
even too long and boring and could have been kept shorter).
As such, it is a very smooth introduction to equilibrium
statistical physics and its relationship with classical
thermodynamics. This is the good news.
The bad news is that under pages and pages of textual, simple
explanation, the author hides real difficult and subtle points.
So in fact it is a big book with a lot of pages that only
brings you up to a modest height in statistical physics.
Compared to Tolman, the information density is quite low.
But then, that's what makes it an easy read.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2002-04-15

I think this book is an example of what sometimes happens when popularity overtakes quality. This book is definitely popular. Some might even call it a classic. But it can't really compare with newer thermodynamics books that more closely follow the modern approach of teaching thermo. It would not be fair to say that the book is incomplete, as it covers all of the necessary topics. However, it does a fairly good job of making the subject more boring than it needs to be. And to anyone who has learned thermodynamics must realize how serious a charge this is. The single biggest obstacle to students struggling to learn thermodynamics is that they find the subject boring, and this book doesn't do anything to help the situation.

                      Book Description

This book is based on many years of teaching statistical and thermal physics. It assumes no previous knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetic theory, or probability--the only prerequisites are an elementary knowledge of classical and modern physics, and of multivariable calculus.

The first half of the book introduces the subject inductively but rigorously, proceeding from the concrete and specific to the abstract and general. In clear physical language the book explains the key concepts, such as temperature, heat, entropy, free energy, chemical potential, and distributions, both classical and quantum.

The second half of the book applies these concepts to a wide variety of phenomena, including perfect gases, heat engines, and transport processes. Each chapter contains fully worked examples and real-world problems drawn from physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, electronics, and mechanical engineering.

                      1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2006-05-10

This book is terrible. We used it for my introductory statistical mechanics class, and no one I talked to in that class liked the book. Things are not explained clearly, equations are often not derived, but either left as exercises, or just stated. Many important results aren't stated clearly, are only implicitly stated, or are hidden in the text. Examples are often not done clearly, and pretty much just state the question and then the answer without showing you how it was arrived at. The index is also worthless, and does not actually list things found in the book. This is one of the worst physics books I've ever used.

                      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2004-04-01

I was fortunate enough to be one of Prof. Sturge's Physics 43 students in 1999. My classmates and I found this to be a wonderful book written by a first-rate teacher. We firmly believe that we found all of the errors and typos ;)

The problem sets nicely complement the text and cover a wide-range of topics. I still have my copy (a soft-binding before AK Peters published it), it is that good. Buy it and consider your money very well spent.

This affordable, chronologically arranged anthology features 72 short stories carefully selected for their representation of international voices and techniques, their significance in the development of fiction, and their educational and thematic value. Selections are weighted toward the modern and contemporary, with a fair representation of earlier stories. Story groupings help instructors shape thematic units, and help students recognize thematic and technical points of comparison between readings. Multiple stories by the same author allow students to compare works and analyze the evolution of the writer's literary technique.

This is the textbook we used for my community college course in 1984. Unfortunately, this was the most advanced course I've ever taken in literature. It is amusing to review what poets and writers are included in this book and what poets and writers I consider important now. I have clearly not followed the prescribed course of study. However, this explains why I have six books by Denise Levertov. I was misguided. The questions that follow every poem, story, and play are vastly amusing and I think I can answer some of them now.

                                    Book Description

Dives and Pauper is an encyclopaedic prose commentary on the ten commandments, cast as a dialogue between a wealthy layman and his instructor, a poor priest, perhaps a mendicant friar. It was composed in the early fifteenth century and addresses theological debates of the turbulent period of English church history with unusual directness and compendiousness. It has long attracted attention from historians of the period and often been quoted. This concluding volume presents a full historical discussion of its context and authorship, while the extensive explanatory notes and glossary make the many references in the text to church authorities, canon law and language accessible. The first two volumes were published by the Early English Text Society as Original Series 275 (1976) and 288 (1980). This final volume has been long- and eagerly-awaited.

This affordable, chronologically arranged anthology features more than 500 poems written between the eighth century and the present. Multiple works by major poets allow students to compare different poems by the same author. A Brief History essays throughout the book discuss the social and cultural contexts of poems, major developments in the history of poetry, and technical literary terms.
