QUANTITATIVE MODELING WITH VIGOR!.......2001-01-10
What distinguishes this book from other neuronal modeling books? Firstly, it contains a solid quantitative flavor necessary for real advances in neural networks. Secondly, it places an emphasis on neuronal models not encountered in computational neuroscience. Thirdly, it is written with authority by some well known names in the field. Each chapter is self-contained and written in a didactic fashion with a future perspectives section and a problem set. The contents range from stochastic fluctuations of ionic channels to morphologically realistic neural networks. Some features include: Lanczos matrices to construct fully equivalent cables, application of Maxwell equations to derive the cable equation, and a chapter devoted to nonlinear cable theory co-authored by one of the founders of theoretical biophysics. This book is thoroughly recommended to anyone who is serious about neuronal modeling.

Description:
In this work, acrylic acid grafted PTFE fibers were prepared as a new packing material for flow injection (FI) on-line microcolumn preconcentration coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) for determination of trace lead and cadmium in environmental and biological samples. Effective preconcentration of trace cadmium and lead was achieved in a pH range of 3.5-6.5 on a microcolumn packed with the developed new packing material. The retained lead and cadmium were efficiently eluted, respectively, with 1.0mol/l HNO"3 and 0.5mol/l HCl for on-line FAAS determination. The developed sorbent exhibited fairly fast kinetics for the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II), permitting the use of high sample flow rates up to at least 10.8ml/min for the FI on-line microcolumn preconcentration system without loss of the retention efficiency. With a preconcentration time of 45s at a sample loading flow rate of 10ml/min, the enhancement factor was found to be 49 for Pb and 73 for Cd at a sample throughput of 55h^-^1. The detection limits (3@s) was 0.26 and 0.10@mg/l for Pb and Cd, respectively. The precision (RSD) for 11 replicate measurements was 1.9% at the 25@mg/l Pb level, and 0.9% at the 10@mg/l Cd level. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of trace Pb and Cd in a variety of environmental and biological samples.

Description:
Poly-l-aspartic acid (PLAsp) and poly-l-glutamic acid (PLGlu) were individually immobilized onto controlled pore glass (CPG) and compared according to their metal-binding capabilities in a solution of pH 7.0. The metal-binding capacities were calculated through the analysis of breakthrough curves generated by monitoring the metal concentrations on a flow injection-flame atomic absorption system. Capacities for individual metals were comparable and in the order of Cu^2^+ @? Pb^2^+ > Ni^2^+ ~ Cd^2^+ > Co^2^+ > Mn^2^+ @? Na^+. Elemental combustion analysis yielded polymer coverage on the CPG of approximately 4 x 10^1^2 to 5 x 10^1^2chains/cm^2, when average chain lengths were used in the calculations. Formation constants and site capacities of both polymers for Cd^2^+ were determined through equilibrium and breakthrough studies. The maximum logK values for the strong sites were determined to be ~13 for both PLAsp and for PLGlu. Additionally, the metal selectivity of PLAsp and PLGlu was evaluated when breakthrough curves were run with several metals present in solution at one time. Both polymers showed selectivities in the order of their single metal-binding capacities, i.e., Cu^2^+ > Pb^2^+ > Ni^2^+ ~ Cd^2^+. Both polymers exhibited similar binding trends and binding strengths for all of the metals studied. This likely reflects the absence of a predetermined tertiary structure of the polymers on the surface and the relatively high residue-per-metal ratio (~20:1), which places less stringent requirements on the steric hindrance between the side chains and the resultant ''wrapping'' of the peptide around the metal.

Description:
Continuous ultrasound-assisted extraction has been coupled with preconcentration and flame atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of cadmium and lead in mussel samples. Experimental designs were used for the optimisation of the leaching and preconcentration steps. The use of diluted nitric acid as extractant in the continuous mode at a flow rate of 3.5mlmin^-^1 and room temperature was sufficient for quantitative extraction of these trace metals. A minicolumn containing a chelating resin (Chelite P, with aminomethylphosphoric acid groups) was proved as an excellent material for the quantitative preconcentration of cadmium and lead prior to their flame atomic absorption detection. A flow injection manifold was used as interface for coupling the three analytical steps, which allowed the automation of the whole analytical process. A good precision of the whole procedure (2.0 and 2.3%), high enrichment factors (20.5 and 11.8) and a detection limit of 0.011 and 0.25@mgg^-^1 for cadmium and lead, respectively, were obtained for 80mg of sample. The sample throughputs were ca. 16 and 14 samplesh^-^1 for cadmium and lead, respectively. The accuracy of the analytical procedures was verified by using a standard reference material (BCR 278-R, mussel tissue) and the results were in good agreement with the certified values. The method was successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of cadmium and lead in mussel samples from the coast of Galicia (NW, Spain).

Description:
A novel flow injection (FI) solid phase extraction method for the determination of arsenic(III) at trace levels was developed, using on-line hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). Selective determination of As(III) was achieved by on-line formation and retention of the pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate arsenic complex As(III)-PDC on the PTFE turnings which are packed in the preconcentration micro-column. The retained complex was eluted by 2ml 2moll^-^1 HCl and subsequently introduced on-line into the integrated reaction chamber/gas-liquid separator (RC-GLS). A 1.5% (m/v) NaBH"4 solution was used for arsine generation, while a gas stream of N"2 was employed for flash release and transportation towards the atomic absorption flow through cell (AAC) for atomization and measurement. The excellent performance of PTFE turnings as sorbent material and the compact design of the RC-GLS result to high sensitivity, selectivity and sampling frequency. For 60s preconcentration time and sample consumption 10.4ml a sampling frequency of 25h^-^1 and a detection limit of c"L=0.02@mgl^-^1 were obtained. The repeatability, expressed as relative standard deviation (R.S.D.), at 1.0@mgl^-^1 As(III), was s"r=2.8%. The proposed method was successfully applied to the selective determination of As(III) in natural waters and total arsenic determination in certified reference material.

Description:
The capabilities and limitations of the continuous flow injection hydride generation technique, coupled to atomic absorption spectrometry, for the speciation of major antimony species in seawater, were investigated. Two pre-concentration techniques were examined. After continuous flow injection hydride generation and collection onto a graphite tube coated with iridium, antimony was determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The low detection limits obtained (~5ngl^-^1 for Sb(III) and ~10ngl^-^1 for Sb(V) for 2.5ml seawater samples) permitted the determination of Sb(III) and total antimony in seawater with the use of selective hydride generation and on-line UV photooxidation. The number of samples that can be analyzed is about 15 per hour for Sb(III) determinations and 10 per hour for total antimony determinations. The analysis of seawater samples showed that Sb(V) was the predominant species, even in the presence of important biological activity.

Description:
A new software-controlled time-based multisyringe flow injection system for mercury determination by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry is proposed. Precise known volumes of sample, reducing agent (1.1% SnCl"2 in 3% HCl) and carrier (3% HCl) are dispensed into a gas-liquid separation cell with a multisyringe burette coupled with one three-way solenoid valve. An argon flow delivers the reduced mercury to the spectrometer. The optimization of the system was carried out testing reaction coils and gas-liquid separators of different design as well as changing parameters, such as sample and reagents volumes, reagent concentrations and carrier gas flow rate, among others. The analytical curves were obtained within the range 50-5000ngL^-^1. The detection limit (3@s"b/S) achieved is 5ngL^-^1. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) was 1.4%, evaluated from 16 successive injections of 250ngL^-^1 Hg standard solution. The injection and sample throughput per hour were 44 and 11, respectively. This technique was validated by means of solid and water reference materials with good agreement with the certified values and was successfully applied to fish samples.

Description:
A method based on flow injection-hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-HG AAS) for the determination of trace amount of Te in lead and lead alloy is described. A flow injection system (FI) and related analytical parameters as well as Te determination and interference caused by Pb, Bi and Ag on Te were investigated. The Pb interference could be overcome by using a small sample volume, while the Bi interference could be overcome by thiourea. However, it was not possible to minimise the interference caused by Ag on Te. The optimised conditions for Te determination in the analysed samples were: 6moll^-^1 HCl as sample carrier solution, 0.75% (m/v) sodium tetrahydroborate as Te reductant, 40@ml of sample solution, and 200mlmin^-^1 Ar flow rate as carrier gas. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 1.0@mgg^-^1 Te (using 250mg of sample in 50ml final solution), the limit of detection (LOD) was 2.5@mgl^-^1 and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 6% for five consecutive measurements of sample solution. The standard addition calibration method was used. Relatively high sample throughput (ca. 45 sample runs can be performed in a working hour), reduced sample manipulation since matrix separation is not necessary, and minor waste generation are the main advantages of the proposed method for Te determination by FI-HG AAS.

Description:
A new and simple flow injection system procedure has been developed for the indirect determination of cyanide. The method is based on insertion of aqueous cyanide solutions into an on-line cadmium carbonate packed column (25% m/m suspended on silica gel beads) and a sodium hydroxide with pH 10 is used as the carrier stream. The eluent containing the analyte as cadmiumcyanide complexes, produced from reaction between cadmium carbonate and cyanide, measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The absorbance is proportional to the concentration of cyanide in the sample. The linear range of the system is up to 15mgL^-^1 with a detection limit 0.2mgL^-^1 and sampling rate 72h^-^1. The method is suitable for determination of cyanide in industrial waste waters with a relative standard deviation better than 1.22%.
Book Description
The classic intellectual autobiography of a great theoretical physicist Spanning the years from World War II, when he was a civilian statistician in the operations research section of the Royal Air Force Bomber Command, through his studies with Hans Bethe at Cornell University, his early friendship with Richard Feynman, and his postgraduate work with J. Robert Oppenheimer, Freeman Dyson has composed an autobiography unlike any other. Dyson evocatively conveys the thrill of a deep engagement with the world-be it as scientist, citizen, student, or parent. Detailing a unique career not limited to his groundbreaking work in physics, Dyson discusses his interest in minimizing loss of life in war, in disarmament, and even in thought experiments on the expansion of our frontiers into the galaxies.

More Truthful than Science.......2006-08-22
I was first introduced to Freeman Dyson as a colleague and sometimes other half of Richard Feynman. I regret that during our brief meetings I never got to know him for being more than a physicist. Therefore, when I started reading this book I was expecting something akin to the biographical material on Feynman. Instead, I found not only a more richly multidimensional book, but a glimpse into the soul of a thinker for the ages and a new window into timeless issues that world news thrusts upon us every day. Dyson explores topics as diverse as his early work in physics, to his work in the nuclear disarmament programs of the Kennedy-Kruschev era, to the politics of the McCarthyist efforts against Oppenheimer, to his thoughts on what it means for a one-time Brit to become an American, to gedanken experiments about colonization of the universe. Beneath each of these topics lies a set of fundamental moral imperatives. This book is an inspiration for professionals to look beyond their profession, and beyond science, to grapple with the great human questions.
The open pages of Dyson's life, as recalled here, take the concept of "laws of nature" far beyond the realm of subatomic particle physics into the space of everyday social experience. This is a book about the development of social conscience, fueled by the ethical questions of nuclear weapons development. It is perhaps predictable that the book dwells on the questions of the morality of war, but the fresh perspectives and depth of thought on this topic kept me engaged. Reaching far beyond the role of science in war, the book extrapolates this discourse into the broader question of technology's role in a conscionable future of humanity. It is one of those uncommon writings from a "science" author that we dare call literature, both in terms of its rhetoric and in terms of its universality.
There is a small bit at the end where Dyson describes what I believe to be an overly ambitious attempt to create a unifying metaphysic of subatomic behavior and human psychology, that seemed out of character with the rest of his book. But I can forgive the author that small distraction in light. And even as strange as it is, it bounces around in my head and--as is true of many ideas from this book--has been the source of numerous thoughtful discussions with colleagues.
An interesting book, but not a masterpiece.......2003-01-23
some reviewers say this book is a masterpiece, and the greatest book written by Freeman.Dyson, I really can't agree with them.
I read the book twice, I find it is an interesting book. Dyson is undoubted a successful scientist, this book ,I think it as autobiography of Dyson. of course, it is very interesting and full of stories. But just like other autobiographies, it is just a story book, not a masterpiece. for these resons, I give it four stars.
F.Dyson wrote some popular book, they are all excellent, but the greater work of Dyson is about scientific research, such as QED.
I also like his "infinite in all directions", because it give me a special viewpoint about science, society and universe.anyway, The book, and others by dyson is worth of reading.
Evocative.......2002-06-27
While browsing the physics books in my local Borders, I picked up this book on a whim and read the first few pages. Those pages were so powerful I immediately bought it.
Dyson begins by writing about his childhood, but even then, the reader can sense that Dyson's perspective encompasses far more than childhood events, as he mentions a favorite children's story in which the hero finds that his toys have come to life and run amuck; a constant theme in the book is that of responsibility for one's scientific discoveries.
Dyson continues with stories about his involvement in RAF Bomber Command during WWII, where he learned the ineffectualness of strategic bombing. But soon Dyson begins branching out from his personal life to address issues such as the search for extraterrestial intelligence, nuclear disarmament, and the role of science and religion.
His words are laced with compassion, as he speaks of the wrongs he has seen committed, very rarely with anger, although he has certainly more than earned that right! One thing that especially struck me over and over is the profound wisdom that this man has. This is a man who would appear a paradox: a seeker of peace yet utterly realistic, a rational scientist yet devoutly religious. You will not be able to resolve this apparent contradiction unless you read this book! And then you will want to read it again. I certainly did.
A Masterpiece.......2001-02-25
This is the best book by Dyson, if you exclude that which contains his Selected Papers. This means a lot for me, for I rate very highly all his books, especially "Infinite in All Directions". Actually, this is one of the best books I ever read, and it influenced me a lot, for instance, in my reading of poetry. It was in this book that I discovered Yeats (recall that I am not a native English speaker). And it gave me the momentum to read, and appreciate in a quite concrete situation, the second part of Goethe's Faust. The episode of Dyson's vacations with mother and father, and the ensuing discussion on humanities vs. science, is very revealing, and helps to pinpoint the origin of the high degree of understanding and tolerance which illuminates all posterior Dyson writings, and that eventually made him win the Templeton Prize. A surprising, very moving chapter on Teller, introduced as a gifted Bach player at the piano is probably closer to the truth than everything else written on the controversial scientist. Wonderful the chapter on how to detect (large) extra-terrestrial civilizations. A book for many, many readings!

Great book - but only for the hardcore.......2003-11-17
A fascinating analysis of some of Lovecraft's central works through the tool of literary deconstruction. I enjoyed this book and found it an easy enough read, despite any formal study in literary criticism. (The author provides a helpful introduction to deconstruction.) Like the heading says, get it if you're a hardcore Lovecraftian, or if the idea of seeing the themes of a story analysed appeals to you; or preferably both.
A provoking look at Lovecraft.......2001-11-05
This is a book that you will either toss aside with a shrug, or that will keep you enthralled for a couple of reading evenings. There's no real middle way. Still, for Lovecraftians it is a must-have must-read.
Burleson applies deconstruction to the texts in a marvellous way, and yet at the same time it sometimes also becomes rather repetitive. But this is so because deconstruction is (in my opinion) also a methodology. At any rate, this book is an eye-opener to the province of the text and how it will never allow itself to be pigeon-holed, or to be fully understood, or to reach a definite interpretation. As Burleson points out texts are always self-subversive, and arrive at aporetic standstills, though simultaneously also lifting the tip on infinity within the text. And where could one do that better than 'in' Lovecraft?
From the opening introduction on deconstructianism, which is very lucid and should be understandable by readers that have not encountered it before, to the final concluding chapter, this book is like spit and mud in your eyes that should be washed in a stream after finishing it, and then to read the book again. You will not only regard Lovecraft 'texts' differently, but also every other text you encounter or re-read will never be the same again.
The stories selected for the deconstructive criticism ("The Call of Cthulhu", "The Shadow over Innsmouth", "The Cats of Ulthar", "The Nameless City", and more short ones) are representative for Lovecraft's recurring themes and motifs, and handled in clear understandable speech and intellectuality. My only complaint with this book is that it is a bit too short - I would have liked to see more attention to the stories, but this is a dilemma for which Burleson doubtlessly stood himself: it is a decision between fewer stories thoroughly (as far as that can be done with deconstructionism) explored, and more stories explored with provocative motivations for further personal investigation on the reader's part. Well, the enthousiasm Burleson leaves one with is more than enough for that.
If you like Lovecraft and literature, your library shouldn't be without this.

Book Description
Death, support, addiction. The only thing you can count on is change. Greenwood writes with the observant eye of Joan Didion and the poetic passion of Sylvia Plath. This confessional memoir details several years of a girl's life as she makes the jump into adulthood. A crazy family, a struggle with depression, Dr. Kevorkian's business card, chemical and sexual dependency, an unsympathetic mother and a need to find her place. Greenwood's detail is haunting and her stories force you to confront subjects better left alone.
Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2003-03-17
"An Act of Contrition" is just that, an outpouring of confessed sins of adolescence and adulthood in an attempt to achieve a peace of mind that always seems just out of reach. This is author E. Greenwood's unsteady travelogue through life, a bear naked revelation of the self for all to see. It takes a tremendous amount of courage for an author to so freely expose herself to the world. Imagine sneaking into your sister's bedroom and stealing her diary, then immediately regretting you did.
"Contrition" is a scrapbook of observations, poems, confessions and autobiographical stories that follow Greenwood through high school and into her late twenties. She talks openly of her struggles with family, friends, depression and even faith. As a feisty child, she was sent to Catholic school where she says, "I'm sure if the Attention Deficit Disorder craze was around back then I would have taken Ritalin instead of Religion." Instead of forming a solid foundation of faith and confidence, it only added to a confusion that would haunt her for years to come.
Reader's will find bits and pieces of their own inner lives within the pages of Greenwood's first literary effort. She hits every note in the symphony of life, struggling with love and sex, depression and drugs, family and loss, not with the adept strokes of a master conductor but with the haltering, uncertain approach of the apprentice on their first day. Her life is our life, and as she holds a mirror to examine herself, we in turn catch a glimpse of our own uncertainties and failures. But in reflecting on the struggle of living, we can also bask in the occasionally victory, the stolen moment of true happiness and the ability to say, yes, I survived it all.
Greenwood's descriptive abilities are what makes this such a touching book. When people characterize her as intelligent and together, she retorts, "For the most part, I am all of these things , except the glue that holds me together is starting to look like old, worthless, clumpy kindergarten paste that was left out with the top off for too long." This is an excellent read that will hook you from the very first line. "An Act of Contrition" is a bold step, especially for a first book. We can only hope that there's more to come.

Janice Holt Giles (1905-1979), nationally-acclaimed author of twenty-four books, considered Act of Contrition one of the best novels she had ever written.
The story focuses on the intimate relationship between Regina, a widow, and Michael, a young doctor whose wife left him for another man. Having found happiness in one another, they desire nothing more than to be together. Yet in the eyes of the Catholic Church, Michael is not free to divorce his wife and marry Regina. In an emotional climax Regina must decide if she loves Michael enough to give him up or if she'll force him to chose between her and his God.
By modern standards Giles's love scenes are tasteful, and the general atmosphere of ecumenism within today's Catholic Church renders moot many of the tensions in the novel. Yet in 1957 Giles's agent and publisher feared the work would cause irreparable harm' to her reputation. As late as 1972 Giles was revising in the hopes of seeing the novel published. Finally her wish is fulfilled.

EXCELLENT BOOK.......2005-09-06
THIS IS A TRUE-TO-FORM JANICE HOLT GILES. EXCELLENT BOOK. AND SO VERY TRUE TO LIFE.
Beautiful Love Story.......2001-06-09
Years after her death, a book by JHG has been published that is a beautiful love story between two people at a time when divorce was against religious teachings. Yet these characters demonstrate that life is good even though all others seem to be against what would be the only way for them to lead the life they seem destined to live.
I could not put the book down until I had finished. It was too long in coming!

Religion and mystery, together at last!.......2002-05-26
I really liked this book. I'm here right now looking in case the author has written any more fiction, but looks like I'm out of luck. If you like mysteries involving religious figures, you'll love it, like me.
Entertaining Reading.......2000-01-15
I read a not-so-flattering account of this novel and thought it deserved a break. Very simply put - I liked it! The reader will not find a smut-filled, disrespectful tale of the Catholic Church, but rather a web of intrigue, a little lust and loyalty. It kept me turning pages. Unbelievable? Perhaps. But an enjoyable work of fiction, nonetheless.
Fast read - wayout story of Catholic clergy.......1999-09-07
I picked this book off a clearance table because of its title and after opening it and seeing references to the Catholic clergy. The book is a murder mystery involving the Catholic clergy, using everything from the seminary to the Vatican as its stage. An unbelievable story that had me smiling with disbelief throughout the book, but, I finished it and put it away with the thought that anybody could write about anything. Not recommended unless you want to get into some WILD unbelievable side of the men who become priests.

Book Description
"What's remarkable about Thomas Cobb's stories is that they manage, simultaneously, to be so hot and so cool. He takes a bead on men and their illusions-boys, too, halfway toward the adult passion that will forever bedevil them-and what he fixes in his sights is the male animal in extremis, pained, full of longing, and finally made sympathetic by his tough and honest observation."-Rosellen Brown
"These stories are built of small moments hauntingly rendered. And they are strong enough to bear the heft and heartbreak of adult life. The funny disorder of it all is made memorable by Mr. Cobb, and his work is worth reading, and even singing, aloud."-Fredrick Busch
"Thomas Cobb, in this stunning collection of short stories, draws unrelenting portraits of cruelty, whether it's the ravages of age in 'Ball Hawks' or the 'costly hobby' of dying in 'Oncology.' Even the 'acts of contrition' are twisted. In revealing the truths of human predatory instincts, Cobb continues to show that he is a master of characterization and one of our most daring craftsmen."-Jeffrey Greene, author, French Spirits
Customer Reviews:
Real life is hard.......2004-03-05
I really enjoyed the stories in this book, not because they have happy endings and lovable characters -- most of them don't. What impressed me was the way Tom Cobb got in the heads of people facing difficult situations -- shaky marriages, cancer, growing up -- and painted realistic pictures of what they might think, say and do. There's a lot of insight into real life, no matter how difficult real life may be.
The dialogue is superb, which is no surprise after reading Crazy Heart, Cobb's novel way back when.
