Metallothionein in Biology and Medicine

This book brings together work from leading researchers to present the most recent advances in research on metallothionein. This protein interests toxicologists because it is thought that metallothionein protects against metal toxicity and possibly against oxidative stress. It is of interest to pharmacologists because modification of metallothionein levels might have a role in cancer chemotherapy. Nutritionists have an interest in this protein because it appears to be a major storage protein for zinc. Biochemists and molecular biologists will be interested in the mechanisms of regulation of this protein because it is extremely inducible.

Horrible book.......2007-01-10

Overcomplicated. The entire book. I'm not just talking rigorous... A good example is the two page proof that the number of microstates in n particles, if each can range from 0 to q, whereas the sum of all must add up to q, is n + q - 1 CHOOSE q. This can be proved (just as formally) in about 3 lines, while being much more intuitive!

Not very useful.

That was my first impression of this book. Suppose I had left my review to the three words above. You would have been left with an empty feeling with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if there was more to it than just those words. You'd probably say my review wasn't very helpful.

Well, that about sums up my feelings for this text. Every time I open it for reference, I read a few pages, looking for something that just doesn't seem to be there. I am left with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if I was missing something. I usually put it back on the shelf and move to the next book, thinking "Hmm. That wasn't very helpful."

This book sits in my library next to the Callen text on thermo and stat mech. I also have a copy of Reichl's stat mech text. Between Salinger, Callen, and Reichl, one might begin to get a handle on the subject, but not one of these books is the *definitive* text on the subject. I haven't found that one yet. I would suggest that if one is looking for yet another reference text, put this one in the number 2 or number 3 slot on your list.

Excellent, balanced treatment........1999-04-05

This is the best introductory thermo, stat mech book available. Very clear with a nice set of problems.

Lectures by a great master........2001-12-20

Max Born, who knew both, rated Pauli as good as Einstein. I don't agree, but, OK, it's a nice compliment! Anyway, Pauli was really great, and a great writer, in this case far surpassing Einstein. These are his lectures (mostly) on Thermodynamics at the ETH, Zurich, which, by the way, was Einstein's alma mater.
Pauli lectured on all of theoretical phyisics there, for several years. He was revered, and the students carefully took notes of whatever he said and write. These notes were then carefully edited by senior colleagues, like Charles Enz. The result was a slim, compact, wonderful text of Carnot-cycle thermodynamics which has even some originality: the master deemed it necessary to reformulate the treatment of chemical equilibrium (using van't Hoof boxes)to reach his standards of excellence.
This is not a text-book on thermodynamics for beginners: it is a
exquisite booklet to polish your understanding and reveal the great elegance and depth of the thermodynamical formalism and, most importantly, ideas.

What it was really like. .......2007-06-13

I was raised to be an anglophile, and revere all things British. I still do, but I'm wiser about it now. Mr Roberts, who worked as a reading instructor in British prisons, gives an honest and not unaffectionate account of a seriously-mismanaged society. It's also very much a personal memoir of the author's parents and the world he lived in. It is here that we learn how England became what it is today, and that both the welfare state and communism had legitimate roots. Salford was not a pleasant place to live back then: in many respects, it was terrifying. Be sure to read the two extra sections at the end. One is a sobering account of the life of a man who did the same job in the same machine shop for decades--yet it is a true celebration of work and life.

Funny at times.......2002-10-29

The Classic Slum, is a good piece of historical writing for its intended audience the facts are present and largely have to be accepted, although given the means to validate them, I expect they would be accurate. Roberts writing has been clearly limited up to the time of his parent's death, which seems to have been a definite decision on where the book should end. By using this limit effectively and creating some fascinating dialogue Roberts has succeeded in writing about a dreary Salford slum in a light and sometimes-funny way.

Great English History.......1999-07-05

This book looks back to Edwardian English society. The author happens to have grown up during this time and gives a vivid account of the "Working Class" society in which he lived. A must read for someone who is interested in British history.
