Product Description
Bioethics: An Introduction to the History, Methods, and Practice, Second Edition is the ideal text for both graduate students and professional students in law, medicine, nursing, or other health-related fields who will face bioethical issues in their future careers. It is one of the only texts in the field to cover the history, methodology, and practice of bioethics. The text is broken into three informative sections: the first addresses the history or bioethics, explaining its emergences as discipline and discourse; the second looks carefully at ethical reasoning and the justification of moral beliefs; and the final section asks students to turn a critical eye to the topic of bioethics, including ethical issues that arise at the beginning and end of life.

Book Description
This book tackles the major issues of what has been loosely named "The New Biology." Contemporary advances in biotechnology and medical science are creating untold opportunities for not only biological or human engineering, but eugenic advancement as well as preconceptual and prenatal diagnosis-through genetic screening-of genetic diseases. While these new technologies have the ability to shape life even before it begins, they sadly often prolong it past the time it should have a dignified ending. George P. Smith discusses the challenges and the socio-legal, ethical, medical, philosophical, and political constructs involved in the decision making process.

Book Description
Five Easy Lessions: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching
- "An invaluable resource for any instructor interested in creating a physics class where students are actively engaged in learning and applying physics. The book is filled with specific suggestions on teaching individual topics in addition to an excellent summary and overview of teaching strategies based on physics education research." — Michael Read, College of the Siskiyous, CA
- "One of the most complete and helpful books on teaching introductory physics that I have ever come across. Not only does it provide thoughtful suggestions about how to improve your course topic by topic, it provides a marvelous primer on educational research into how students learn (or fail to learn) physics." — Dale Pleticha, Gordon College, MA
- "I have used the great ideas from this book over the last few years. It contains excellent summaries of research into students' learning and offers lots of helpful and specific advice on how to bring the ideas that have emerged from this research into your classroom. It is a valuable resource for improving students' learning." — Larry Lonney, Shawnee State University, Portsmouth, OH
Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching is a paperback book packed with creative tips on how instructors can enhance and improve their physics class instruction techniques. It's an invaluable companion to Randy Knight's
Physics for Scientists and Engineers — or for any physics course.
Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for more than 20 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, where he is currently Professor of Physics. Professor Knight received a bachelor's degree in physics from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to this book. Professor Knight's research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy. He recently led the effort to establish an environmental studies program at Cal Poly, where, in addition to teaching introductory physics, he also teaches classes on energy, oceanography, and environmental issues.
Customer Reviews:
A must for successful physics instruction.......2007-09-07
I found this book invaluable for teaching my AP Physics class. It lays out inquiry based instruction for all levels of physics and backs its claims with physics education research. This book additionally discusses particular subjects within the physics curriculum and defines the misconceptions that students often bring to the classroom. Prior know of these misconceptions helps the instruction in lesson planning and labs.
An Invaluable Resource for Physics Educators.......2006-04-04
Five Easy Lessons is written not so much for students of the subject as for those who must teach them. Far too often, the process of this teaching either assumes the student as Tabla Rasa or gives little thought to the previous knowledge state of the student. Knight's book is an excellent way to move beyond these assumptions and to get an idea of the misconceptioins and alternative conceptions that will impede a student's ability to learn the subject.
The book is broken up into two sections. The first section covers the broad generalities of teaching physics, physics education research and implementing an active-learning environment in the classroom. These chapters will be of great use to the educator trying to understand how to move away from lectures and verification labs into something more effective. The second section discusses the particulars of teaching each major subject area within physics including suggested class schedules as well as specific misconceptions to be addressed.
I would strongly recommned this book to two groups: any educator looking to move from a traditional educational setting to an active-learning environment and those high school level educators who need to review their physics background in preparation for teaching the subject, especially if the subject is being taught out of field.
hands-on experiments.......2005-02-20
Why do so many students have problems with physics? Part of it is just aptitude. You really do need a natural fluency with maths to go far into physics. But even so, there are basic physics ideas that can be usefully understood at a qualitative level, by those who will take no other courses in physics. It is perhaps for such students that Knight addresses his book.
He tries to grab your interest. In part by describing ideas as eloquently as he can. But also by suggesting experiments that illustrate key ideas, and which are hands-on, without demanding abstruse maths sophistication on your part. And which do not need elaborate and expensive apparatus to set up. He has derived these in large part from his own, long experience in teaching physics. Hopefully, you might learn something from this text.

Geared for kids but still informative.......2007-08-09
This seems geared for the junior high school crowd, but there are still great pictures and it's pretty stuffed with information. Worthwhile buy.
Young adults (and even older ones!) will love this book.......2004-03-04
This book is a visual feast and a joy to browse; the graphic design captures the energy of the Harlem Renaissance. It's like a scrapbook jammed with "rent party" tickets, dinner programs, book covers, letters, playbills, song lyrics and more. There is something here to capture the interest of even reluctant readers.
But the text also shines. The story of how and why Harlem came to be is told clearly and without mincing words: we learn the glorious achievements in art, music, theater, literature and just plain survival, but we also learn of the racism haunting the era, and the infighting within the Black community itself. I think readers will appreciate this honest, realistic approach, which brings the era to life.
By the way, given the graphic beauty of this book, the price is a steal!

Book Description
Langston Hughes drew poetic inspiration from the heart and soul of African-American culture. His original verse resonates with the rhythms of jazz, blues and the language of the streets. Describing the everyday lives of African Americans, Hughes became the leading African-American poet of the world.
In Langston Hughes: Poet of the Harlem Renaissance, author Christine M. Hill explores the life and career of this beloved--sometimes controversial--poet. After a lonely childhood and one unhappy year of college, Hughes educated himself by wandering the globe, searching for meaning and finding within himself the rich voice of his people. In the 1920s he returned to the United States, where he finished college and became a major figure in the flourishing arts scene in Harlem, a district of New York City. Despite a life plagued at times by loneliness, poverty, racial discrimination, and political persecution, Langston Hughes let nothing stand in the way of achieving his dream of becoming a writer. He died in 1967, but his seven volumes of poetry, as well as his short stories, hit plays, autobiographical works, and social commentary are a powerful legacy.

Book Description
During the New Negro Renaissance, African American children's literature became a crucial medium through which a disparate community forged bonds of cultural, economic, and aesthetic solidarity. Employing interdisciplinary critical strategies, including social, educational, and publishing history, canon-formation theory, and extensive archival research, Children's Literature of the Harlem Renaissance analyzes childhood as a site of emerging black cultural nationalism. It explores the period's vigorous exchange about the nature and identity of black childhood and uncovers the networks of African Americans who worked together to transmit black history and culture to a new generation.
Customer Reviews:
Lively and readable.......2004-11-09
This book surveys the literature and drama produced about and for children and their parents during the Harlem Renaissance, the period associated with the flowering of the arts not only in Harlem but in other urban centers as well. Believing that the "New Negro" would ultimately arise from black youth, W.E.B. Du Bois, Carter G. Woodson, Langston Hughes, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, and other major figures took an impassioned interest in the literary models offered to children.
Smith explores the period's vigorous exchange about the nature and identity of black childhood and uncovers the networks of African American philosophers, community activists, schoolteachers, and literary artists who worked together to transmit black history and culture to the next generation. She also explores how various leaders forged bonds of cultural, economic and aesthetic solidarity even though they often disagreed over popular vs. elite constructions. This process is fascinating to watch, and is amply documented throughout the book with images and excerpts.
The book is lively and readable...not words I frequently associate with such an exhaustive study. I particularly enjoyed the chapter about Carter G. Woodson's publishing house, which issued a dozen children's texts during the 1930's and 1940's. I hope this book finds its way beyond the African American Studies bookshelves, as it deserves to be read by anyone interested in the evolution of American children's literature.

Low level Reading- High level Star.......2007-01-20
I actually used this book as a source for a college paper. It is one of few resources out there if you are interested in Augusta Savage. I thought it was fun, but of course would recommend it for late Elemantary School to Junior High in normal situations.

Customer Reviews:
excellent book for young readers.......2000-04-12
Great to see such an excellent book on Duke Ellington made available for the young adult. Another fantastic biography, though for adults it is so accessible that it would also be a marvelous fit for young readers as well is Janna Steed's Duke Ellington: A Spiritual Biography. I would highly recommend both these books.
A Must.......2000-02-27
any Book on Duke Ellington is a must.he is a Teacher of Music.this Book reflects alot of his Importance to the Music WOrld at large.his work to me is as Important as MOzarts.you can never say enough about his Genius&Impact.
Duke Ellington by Ron Frankl.......1998-01-01
This is one of the best books I have read thus far for the young adult level. Any collector or fan who is interested in the photographics of Ellington should defintely purchase this book. Most authors use the Smithsonian's photos. This author seemed to concentrate his search for photos to the NYC area. The author appeared to have written the book more out of love of jazz than royalities. I would highly recommend it as a teaching tool for the juvenile and the photos for the collectors. In 105 pages, he has 65 photos.
