Book Description
The phylum Platyhelminthes is comprised of some 50,000 species of flatworms living in a wide variety of habitats - from the deep sea to the damp soil of tropical forests- where they occupy pivotal roles in many ecosystems. The parasitic forms include tapeworms and flukes, which plague virtually every species of vertebrates and impose major medical, veterinary, and economic burdens. Interrelationships of the Platyhelminthes elucidates the role of flatworms in the animal kingdom. It brings together results from an international group of experts, spanning many disciplines, who give evidence for the phylogeny of the flatworms and constituent major taxa. A combined approach, using traditional comparative techniques along with the modern techniques of molecular phylogeny, is utilized to show that the monophyly of the phylum is not fully established, and that the phylum may in fact consist of two groups: the acoels and their direct relatives, which are basal metazoans, and the Rhabditophora, which is a more derived group. The authors review the contributions of neurobiology, morphology, and developmental and molecular biology in light of their contributions to flatworm phylogenetics. This volume provides explicit and fully defined character matrices wherever possible allowing critics, supporters, and future workers to evaluate the state of flatworms systematics and phylogenetics from a single resource. This volume will appeal to all who have an interest in flatworms and recognize the value of phylogenetics as the basis for comparative biology.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-05-22
Stellar text. Very thorough and easy to read. New version is in color, and has several new chapters. I'm very happy with the new edition
The Luminescence Bible.......2007-03-09
What's more to say? This is the authoritative, the definitive volume for luminescence experiments from theory to all of the most useful applications. It is readable, dense, useful and indispensable if you do fluorescence, lifetime measurements, energy transfer studies, etc., etc.
A most worthy successor to the first edition.......1999-09-14
In the sixteen years since the appearance of the first edition of Lakowicz's Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, the use of fluorescence as an analytical tool has grown remarkably, especially in instrumentation, available fluorophores, and practical applications. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the second edition of the work has more than doubled in size.
The approach is the same as that in the first edition: fluorescence spectroscopy from the viewpoint of a biophysical chemist. Explanations are clear. References are profuse; they now number well over a thousand and include an additional appendix that cites many books and review articles for additional reading. Figures are also plentiful; no fancy color diagrams a la contemporary biochemistry texts, but basic line drawings, primarily adapted from journal articles.
The first three chapters ("Introduction to Fluorescence", "Instrumentation for Fluorescence Spectroscopy", and "Fluorophores") are an excellent brief (93-page) introduction to the whole field. Most of the remaining 19 chapters are organized around the kinds of photophysical processes and spectroscopic quantities that are relevant to fluorescence. These include very thorough treatments of fluorescence lifetimes, quenching, anisotropy, and energy transfer. There are many examples drawn from journal articles. In addition, the work now covers more of the technological applications of fluorescence, especially in chapters on "Fluorescence Sensing" and "DNA Technology". These give a sense of the great contributions that fluorescence has made to biotechnology.
My own work involves varied applications of fluorescence to biotechnology, and the second edition of Lakowicz is my reference book of choice. It would also be an excellent text for a graduate course on fluorescence in a chemistry or biochemistry department. All in all, this is a most worth successor to the first edition.
Great book, new edition out soon.......1999-06-10
Joe Lakowicz has just finished a thorough revision of this classic work, which should be coming out soon. Highly recommended.
An excellent book for an overview on fluorometry.......1999-05-12
Introduces the reader to the basic physics and physical chemistry of fluorescence phenomena, fluorometry techniques and covers advanced topics as well. An excellent textbook.

Book Description
Today, fluorescence spectroscopy is an important tool of investigation in many areas. In analytical sciences, its advantage is extremely high sensitivity and selectivity - even single molecules can be detected - and it achieves a high spatial resolution and time resolution in combination with microscopic techniques or laser techniques, respectively. In material sciences, this is used to study structure and dynamics of surfaces. Particularly in the areas of biochemistry and molecular genetics, fluorescence spectroscopy has become a dominating technique. Together with the latest imaging techniques, fluorescence spectroscopy allows a real-time observation of the dynamics of intact biological systems with an unprecedented resolution.
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to and survey of fluorescence spectroscopy. It is written for newcomers and active researchers alike who are learning to apply fluorescence methods in the areas of chemistry, physical chemistry, polymers, materials, colloids, biochemistry, biology, medical and pharmaceutical research.

great for beginners, but too few references.......2003-12-07
This is a great introductory book. Beautifully edited, very well written, with a lot of information to start digging each subject; I just missed a few more references in each chapter, and also more references to journals and not just other books, and then I would have been a 5 star.

Book Description
Fluorescence spectroscopy is an important investigational tool in many areas of analytical science, due to its extremely high sensitivity and selectivity. With many uses across a broad range of chemical, biochemical and medical research, it has become an essential investigational technique allowing detailed, real-time observation of the structure and dynamics of intact biological systems with extremely high resolution. It is particularly heavily used in the pharmaceutical industry where it has almost completely replaced radiochemical labelling.Principles and Applications of Fluorescence Spectroscopy gives the student and new user the essential information to help them to understand and use the technique confidently in their research. By integrating the treatment of absorption and fluorescence, the student is shown how fluorescence phenomena arise and how these can be used to probe a range of analytical problems. A key element of the book is the inclusion of practical laboratory experiments that illustrate the fundamental points and applications of the technique.

Book Description
The mysteries of the physical world speak to us through equations--compact statements about the way nature works, expressed in nature's language, mathematics. In this book by the renowned Dutch physicist Sander Bais, the equations that govern our world unfold in all their formal grace--and their deeper meaning as core symbols of our civilization.
Trying to explain science without equations is like trying to explain art without illustrations. Consequently Bais has produced a book that, unlike any other aimed at nonscientists, delves into the details--historical, biographical, practical, philosophical, and mathematical--of seventeen equations that form the very basis of what we know of the universe today. A mathematical objet d'art in its own right, the book conveys the transcendent excitement and beauty of these icons of knowledge as they reveal and embody the fundamental truths of physical reality.
These are the seventeen equations that represent radical turning points in our understanding--from mechanics to electrodynamics, hydrodynamics to relativity, quantum mechanics to string theory--their meanings revealed through the careful and critical observation of patterns and motions in nature. Mercifully short on dry theoretical elaborations, the book presents these equations as they are--with the information about their variables, history, and applications that allows us to chart their critical function, and their crucial place, in the complex web of modern science.
Reading The Equations, we can hear nature speaking to us in its native language.
Customer Reviews:
The Beauty of Equations.......2006-03-24
The book is very educational and includes numerous equations that represent turning points in humanity's understanding of the world. Equations are in fields such as mechanics, electrodynamics, hydrodynamics, relativity, and quantum mechanics. The book starts with a short introduction to important mathematical concepts. The book appeals to anyone who is interested in physics and mathematics.
Inishgtful, Mesmerizing, Amazing.......2006-03-07
If you've ever wondered what kinds of formulas physicists deal with to solve complex ideas such as String Theory, look no further than this book.
I have looked everywhere for the real equations that physicists use, but to no avail. Finally, I purchased this little gem and it fulfills all of my hopes.
Not only does this book give you the actual run-down of what the equation at hand looks like, the author, Sander Bais, breaks the formula down to describe it piece by piece. Bais breaks down what each variable represents and what your end result would be if you were to actually do the problem. Bais includes graphs to represent what the end result should look like, as well as the ranges the equation's answers should fall into when solved. Great book.
My only quarrel is that this book has a fault. One of the equations is wrong (as you've read through other reviews). And since this book is called "The Equations", I think it's a major mistake. That's why I give it a 4. Otherwise, this is a superbly insightful book. Anyone with any interest in physics of mathematics should definately take a look at this book.
A Wonderful Compilation of the `Rules of the Game'.......2005-12-15
The book was heavily wrapped in plastic -- Harvard University Press ? What was the title? `The Equations' ? I opened it in my local bookstore. And there were all the major equations describing mechanics, fluid dynamics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, quantum chromodynamics, string theory, and more. Like the icons they were, they stood silently ... in the middle of the pages, with some brief explanations about them on the nearby page.
What a great idea for a book! A 5 star idea, surely. These equations must surely count for the highest density of information (or predictive power, perhaps) per symbol ever produced by humans, so perhaps this book, as short as it is, counts in some similar way.
Why not 5 stars for the book? For a couple of reasons:
1) The production quality seems excellent. The book was printed in Italy, but the book does not say whether it was printed on acid-free paper. I assume it was. It is very nicely bound.
2) The author uses bold face for vectors, quite common. But because of the unusual color schemes, when one sees white equations on a red background, it can take the eye a split second longer to separate scalars from vectors -- not a serious problem.
3) There seem to be typos in the book --- yes, the Gaussian on page 53 should have a minus sign in the exponent. Worse still, the explantion of what it means for a fluid to be incompressible on page 32 is wrong. An incompressible fluid most often is defined so that the density of each mass element in the fluid is constant, and this means that the `time derivative following the fluid element' of the density is zero, not that the local time rate of change of the density is zero. But mistakes happen --- the gods frown on perfection.
4) The author devotes a few pages to outlining differential calculus, but then shies away from the `integration idea' because he says that `we will never have to explicitly integrate the equations of motion'. But the integration idea is often used in DERIVING the equations of motion (for example, the integral theorems of vector calculus, etc.) so one approach might have been to develop these ideas more thoroughly.
These are small quibbles, about a book containing very big ideas. It is a wonderful idea to produce a book like this. I hope some of those who read it, especially young people, will find themselves staring mystically at these equations, wondering, `How much...how much really is in these? What are the equations of the future going to look like? What would this book look like in a hundred years? ' and that these thoughts lead them into a career in science.
An esthetic high level overview of all of mathematical science.......2005-12-08
The existence of a mathematical equation that summarizes a large body of physical knowledge is a remarkable achievement, a pinnacle of science. The excitement of such equations is something that normally remains inaccessible to the public at large. By presenting some of the main equations of science as icons this book allows the reader to get a taste of what they are about without wading through all the details. While the discussions are brief, they have the tone of accuracy and authority that one expects from a leading scientist as opposed to a science journalist. At the same time the discussion is articulate and approachable. This book can also be regarded as a tasteful and esthetic tribute to the whole pursuit of mathematical science. It is ideal for a humanist who wants to get the gestalt of physics, at the same that every physicist will want to have one on his or her shelf.
Aptly named- a well done recap of mankind's greatest achievement .......2005-12-04
This book is a smash hit. You need some familiarity with basic science and mathematical concepts. The book gives one a sense of awe at man's struggle to understand the physical world and the achievement these equations represent. Such a great idea it's a wonder it hasn't been done before. I enjoyed every page. It had been a long time since I discovered and thought about these "icons" during undergraduate studies.
Book Description
A Night of Serious Drinking is among René Daumal's most important literary works. It is a work of symbolic fiction that can be enjoyed purely as an entertaining and imaginative story, but also for the much deeper meaning enwoven into its deceptively simple plot: An unnamed narrator spends an evening getting drunk with a group of friends. As the party becomes totally intoxicated and exuberant, the narrator embarks on a journey that ranges from seeming paradises to the depths of pure hell.
Daumal's keen perceptions of the human condition infuse A Night of Serious Drinking with a critique of culture and consciousness that is both disquieting and enlivening.
Customer Reviews:
Astonishingly Timeless.......2003-06-14
A NIGHT OF SERIOUS DRINKING is an amazing, short novel written by Rene Daumal in French in 1938 and translated into English in 1978. It has now been reissued thanks to the vision of TUSK IVORIES, a publishing house committed to restoring classic books from Europe, Asia, and Latin America, books that are profoundly important but happen to disappear off the shelves of bookstores.
Rene Daumal was a poet, writer and philosopher who preceeded the Beat Generation by twenty some years, writing about the absurdity of life as we are leading it. His title "Night.." refers metaphorically to the thirst we have to make sense of a world of endless intoxication. He introduces characters/types who drown themselves in alcohol in order to expound on fantasy ideas of the meaning of life. He then takes us on a "utopian tour" of life as a fantastical house dismembered and reassembled in a bizarre series of levels of sci-fi porportions - an artificial Paradise which peels away to a Kafkaesque, rotten core. He finally addresses the pie-in-the-sky concept of mythology and religion as a means of purification/evolution only to call forth his fellow drinking partners to wake up to the possibility of change. For all the surreal maelstrom of his intoxicated revelation of society as we are living it, Daumal makes his narrator introduce hope 'seeing the myriad atoms of possibility'.
This is a profound little book that is richly written, understands the use of metaphor, and calls us to step out of the dark hole of depression to view the 'available light' in the future. Not a one-read book, this little treasure asks to be re-visited frequently. And now, thanks to Tusk Ivories, we can.
A Night of Serious Thinking.......2002-04-05
When I stumbled across this book twelve years ago at a used bookstore in Berkeley, I had no idea what I was in for...I was simply drawn to the title, and I had certainly never heard of Daumal at the tender age of 21. My favorite quote from the novelette: "There are only three exits here: madness and death." It is impossible for me to fathom that you, too, will not cherish this book beyond any other. Never before had I identified so readily with an author's depiction of the absurdity of modern humanity. Truly a treat. Out of print! Get it while you can!
falling off the wagon.......2001-01-14
I first read 'A Night' for a lit class in high school, and saved my copy, as it is one of the books that I re-read occasionally. It is such a wonderful, dense piece of satire, that it warrants a review occasionally to pick up or notice something new. With the turn of the century, I returned to the everlasting night of drinking again, and found that the Figeters, the Fabricators of useless objects, and the Clarificators are still among us, or us among them, as we soberly go through our world. As a good satire, the reader should see themself in the text, and I can't go through it without that happening (I'm a Clarificator). So, pick it up, read it, re-read it, and try to figure out if the author is an observer of patient in his allegorical world.
Lending Literature Fraught With Peril!.......1999-03-21
A funny surrealistic portrait of a man who's committed to a Lewis Carroll-esque journey through a insane asylum when he expresses his desire to quit drinking. In his world-gone-mad satire where people who fail to embrace the nihilistic escapism of the bottle are sent to the sanitarium for treatment, Daumal blends his poetic wit with striking hallucinatory imagery to create a novel which defies rational explanation. Unfortunately, I lent this book to a close friend a long time ago, and have since lost touch with him. I was so pleased when I'd found this book at a local public library (as you can see it's out of print) thinking I would finally have a chance to reread it after all these years. I got halfway through it that day, but unfortunately when I returned to the library to check it out (it seems you need proof of address to get a library card, I had just relocated. . , anyway), well, their copy had been stolen. Hmm. Sad? Well, It's a book that's definitely worth snatching up if you happen to run across it (note, however: stealing from public libraries is shameful and wrong).
Outstanding; hilarious and Creative; book is well written.......1998-03-06
I think this book is marvellous. The author writes this book in an incredibly sagacious manner. The book is well organized and thorough. The descriptions of the life are incredible.
