    Book Description

The new approach to ecosystem health is proactive. As a result, the scope of environmental studies is growing and the methods are evolving. Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health aggressively broadens the range of ecotoxicology to include its related fields. The book begins with John Cairns, Jr.'s predictions and recommendations for the future ecotoxicology: "New goals must lead to new techniques.... the field of ecotoxicology is in the early stages of a major paradigm shift that is driven by three interrelated forces: 1) heightened interest in sustainable use of the planet, 2) protection of ecosystem , and 3) the shift from emphasis on avoiding deleterious effects to maintaining them in robust health." Later chapters explore the integration of data, intrinsic remediation studies and the ever- increasing number of associated disciplines that are improving our environmental potential. Methodology, itself, is considered as an evolving tool, always in need examination and revision. Cairns, and his co-authors all advocate a constructive, offensive new form of ecoscience. The consensus of scientists is clear: toxic threat and, especially, habitat destruction are the most important environmentl issues, today. The mandate from Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health is also decisive: expand the parameters of ecoscience. The future of life on earth depends upon our ability to grow and learn.

      Description:
Despite recent efforts to limit the growth of SO"2 emissions in Asia, the negative environmental effects of sulphur emissions are likely to further increase in the future. This paper presents an extension of the RAINS-Asia integrated assessment model for acidification in Asia with an optimisation routine that can be used to identify cost-effective emission control strategies that achieve environmental targets for ambient SO"2 concentrations and sulphur deposition at least costs. Example scenarios developed with this optimisation module demonstrate a potential for significant cost savings in Asia, if emission controls are allocated to those sources that have the largest environmental impact and are cheapest to control. It is shown that strategies that simultaneously address harmful population exposure and the risk of vegetation damage from acid deposition result in the most cost-effective use of resources spent for emission controls.

          Book Description

Rubber elasticity is an important sub-field of polymer science. This book is in many ways a sequel to the authors' previous, more introductory book, Rubberlike Elasticity: A Molecular Primer (Wiley-Interscience, 1988), and will in some respects replace the now classic book by L.R.G. Treloar, The Physics of Rubber Elasticity (Oxford, 1975). The present book has much in common with its predecessor, in particular its strong emphasis on molecular concepts and theories. Similarly, only equilibrium properties are covered in any detail. Though this book treats much of the same subject matter, it is a more comprehensive, more up-to-date, and somewhat more sophisticated treatment.

            Book Description

Thermal Analysis of Polymeric Materials systematically treats macroscopic measurements by thermal analysis and the quantitative link to microscopic, molecular structure and mobility. Reversible and irreversible thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics are the roots of the described thermal analysis. The book aims to broaden readers’ understanding of materials and the connection of flexible macromolecules (polymers) to small molecules and rigid macromolecules (minerals, salts, and metals). An effort is made to discover how the long, flexible molecules fit into their small phases which are characterized as microphases or nanophases. Their order ranges from amorphous to mesophase-like and crystalline. Ultimately, it is shown that the basic structure-property-processing triangle is connected to the better-known types of molecules and their common macroscopic phases.

            3 out of 5 stars Content.......2007-01-03

I was disappointed with the content of the book. It is largely about the history and general principles. It did not get into methodology or details about polymers themselves. It may be good for the classroom, but is lacking for industry use.

              Book Description

Relating Materials Properties to Structure: Handbook and Software for Polymer Calculations and Materials Properties lays the foundation for an understanding of the basic structure of materials and the significant distinguishing features between major classes. It provides a method of comparison between the structure of different classes of materials and their attendant properties. The structural differences between individual polymers and the resultant properties are a primary focus, since this is the only class of materials where data and techniques allow properties to be estimated. This book and CD-ROM software package provides an easy, straightforward technique for estimating polymer properties via simple software. The software permits the user to see the effects of changing a structure, and to estimate the properties of a polymer that might be unavailable or very time-consuming to find. The ability of the software to estimate the miscibility of various polymer blends is one of its most valuable aspects. While most methods that are extremely easy make simplifying assumptions that adversely affect accuracy, in this case, the inaccuracies introduced do not obviate the usefulness of the software or techniques. Relating Materials Properties to Structure: Handbook and Software for Polymer Calculations and Materials Properties Software offers the most comprehensive system presently available. Invaluable to all involved in fundamental polymer research, new product polymer alloy development, investigating polymer/plasticizer miscibility, and those involved in designing and specifying polymeric materials required to meet mechanical, physical, thermal, electrical and blending properties.

                    Book Description

The rise in the production and use of polymers as everyday materials has for the most part been due to advances in polymers synthesis allowing the manufacture of huge range of materials suitable for many different applications. The current and potential applications of ion-containing polymers or ionomers are many and varied. One of the most well-established of these is the use of perfluorinated ionomers as members in chlor-alkali cells. Ionic interactions may also be used to modify the properties of thermoplastics, as in the case of the well-known Surlyn materials which are widely used in packaging applications. Other current applications of ionomers include their use as thermoplastic elastomers blend compatibilizers and fluid additives such as dispersants.
For every existing application, there are a great many potential applications that have yet to be exploited and with the tremendous explosion in ionomer research and applications, the time has arrived for a concise and authoritative account of the field.
This book written by a team of industrial and academic researchers, is directed at polymer scientists and chemical engineers.

                          Book Description

This work analyzes the implementation of controversial public policy. A single, overarching model provides the framework for testing competing theories, ranging from Max Weber's bureaucracy theory and Woodrow Wilson's theory of administration to more recent ideas on how the legislature controls the bureaucracy. The model combines ideas about policy implementation drawn from different disciplines: political science, public administration, sociology and economics. The author uses a novel empirical test design to measure agency performance and deviations from political decisions taken in three Dutch local authorities. In contrast to more conventional implementation studies, this work adopts a `few variables, many cases' approach. The model and empirical tests, which are fully clarified in the book, together offer a novel framework for the analysis of complex implementation processes. A previous version of the book (written in Dutch) was awarded the prestigious Van Poelje prize of the Dutch Association for Public Administration and the 1996 annual award of the Dutch Political Science Association.

                            Book Description

Here is the first survey of the surviving evidence for the growth, development, and influence of the Neoplatonist allegorical reading of the Iliad and Odyssey. Professor Lamberton argues that this tradition of reading was to create new demands on subsequent epic and thereby alter permanently the nature of European epic. The Neoplatonist reading was to be decisive in the birth of allegorical epic in late antiquity and forms the background for the next major extension of the epic tradition found in Dante.

4 out of 5 stars The Divine Homer.......2006-09-10

Homer the Theologian is a comprehensive and professional study on the various perspectives which shaped the ancient/medieval Homeric persona; and it also extensively covers the neoplatonic/allegorical method of interpretation with regard to the Iliad and Odyssey. The book reveals the esoteric and super-religious tendencies of philosophy during the last great explosion of Hellenistic culture; and it encourages the reader to consider the magnitude and importance of this tradition in the formation of our own religious and philosophical traditions. Lamberton displays a profound knowledge of the entire Greek/Latin corpus of mytho-poetic and theo-sophic literature; and he possesses a command of the sources that asserts itself on every page.

                                Book Description

The Neoplatonist philosophers who flourished between the third and sixth centuries AD had a profound influence on western philosophy, on both Christian and Islamic literature and the visual arts from the Renaissance to modern times. This extensively revised and updated second edition of Neoplatonists provides a valuable introduction to the thought of four central Neoplatonic philosophers, Plotinus, Porphyry, Proclus and Iamblichus. John Gregory presents new translations of a selection of key passages from Neoplatonist writings, an introduction that puts in context the writings, and an epilogue detailing the legacy and influence of Neoplatonist thought.

                                  Translated by Thomas Taylor

Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

Sallust was a Neoplatonic philosopher who flourished in the fourth century A.D. and is said to have written the present work for the benefit of Emperor Julian. Taylor's added notes and commentaries give valuable insights into the essential meaning, which is often obscure in the actual texts. This volume also includes translations of The Pythagoric Sentences of Demophilus and Proclus' Five Hymns, along with Five Hymns by Thomas Taylor; it is a photographic facsimile of the extremely scarce original edition of 1795.
