Book Description
Despite their importance in terms of employment and income generation, inshore fisheries have been a neglected area of study. The review of the common fisheries policy, especially in the light of the need to re-examine the derogation which reserves access to the inshore zone to coastal state vessels, provides an opportunity to redress the balance. With contributions from leading authorities on fisheries management, the book takes an in-depth look at seven European countries, examining the basis for the definition of inshore fisheries, evaluating their status, and describing the salient characteristics of their management. The national studies form the basis for cross-cultural analyses of the social organisation, cultural norms, economic objectives, and institutional structures of inshore fisheries in Europe. Finally, a number of key issues relating to the future of inshore fisheries management in a more integrated approach are examined. Overall the volume reaffirms the invaluable role played by inshore fisheries in the local and regional economies of Europe's complex coastline.

Bad from title to end.......2007-03-03
The only thing mysterious here is how this great scientist has managed to muddle up his own theory in this book to the point where its unintelligible. It takes him a chapter to state that the electron does not have a velocity or a path in the classical sense. And why give this book such a blatant appealing title to lure beginners to pay money for this trash. No examples or end-of-chapter problems either. Read Lev Landau instead.
A Good Hard Read.......2005-06-18
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It uses technical language (which can at times can become difficult), to express the physical context surrounding the development of Quantum mechanics, and deal with the matter at hand (pardon the pun). Quantum theory has a reputation as being difficult, confronting and unbelievable. However this book expresses logically and in detail, the physical principles of the Quantum theory, by the great Werner Heisenberg himself.
A great book if your thought needs provoking...
Heisenberg's motivation.......2004-01-22
Not really for beginners in spite of appearances, this book sketches Heisenberg's path in discovering the canonical commutation rules of quantum mechanics. After trying unsuccessfully for years to quantize the helium atom via the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules (which attempt Einstein had already explained in 1917 to be hopeless, because the classical 3-body problem is nonintegrable), Heisenberg was finally motivated by the example of relativity (where absolute time had to be abandoned) to give up the assumption that the position and momentum of a point particle are simultaneously predictable. To follow Heisenberg's reasoning the reader must first understand action-angle variables in classical mechanics. With Einstein's 1917 paper in hindsight, the three body problem representing the helium atom energy spectrum was finally approximated semi-clasically around 1990 based on a path-integral approximation to a chaotic Hamiltonian system.
Great book, but beginners beware.......2003-02-04
This book is excellent--BUT you must have a very keen appreciation of what is happening with the mathematics in order to understand its intensity. If you are just beginning your study of quantum mechanics, I would not recommend this to you unless you just wanted to blur your vision. First, get your tools sharpened with introductory level books and then, maybe, try to tackle this. Its pretty rough, but if you get there it is well worth it.
A classic in quantum mechanics.......2001-12-20
This book is the standard introduction to - well, to the physical principles underlying the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics. While it is dated in terms of that mathematical formalism, it has never been superseded in its analyses. Every serious student of quantum physics will encounter it, sooner or later, in the original or in paraphrases in newer monographs on quantum theory.
Book Description
Quantum Chemistry of Solids delivers a comprehensive account of the main features and possibilities of LCAO methods for the first principles calculations of electronic structure of periodic systems. The first part describes the basic theory underlying the LCAO methods applied to periodic systems and the use of wave-function-based (Hartree-Fock), density-based (DFT) and hybrid hamiltonians. The translation and site symmetry consideration is included to establish connection between k-space solid-state physics and real-space quantum chemistry methods in the framework of cyclic model of an infinite crystal. The inclusion of electron correlation effects for periodic systems is considered on the basis of localized crystalline orbitals. The possibilities of LCAO methods for chemical bonding analysis in periodic systems are discussed. The second part deals with the applications of LCAO methods for calculations of bulk crystal properties, including magnetic ordering and crystal structure optimization. The discussion of the results of some supercell calculations of point defects in non-metallic solids and of the crystalline surfaces electronic structure illustrates the efficiency of LCAO method for solids.

Book Description
Quantum behavior encompasses a large fraction of modern science and technology, including the laws of chemistry and the properties of crystals, semiconductors, and superfluids. This graduate-level text presents the basic principles of quantum mechanics using modern mathematical techniques and theoretical concepts, such as hermitian operators, Hilbert space, Dirac notation, and ladder operators. The first two chapters serve as an introduction to quantum theory with a discussion of wave motion and Schrödinger's wave mechanics. Coverage then details the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. Throughout, basic theory is clearly illustrated and applied to the harmonic oscillator, angular momentum, the hydrogen atom, the variation method, perturbation theory, and nuclear motion. This volume is the ideal textbook for beginning graduate students in chemistry, chemical physics, molecular physics and materials science.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent textbook.......2002-08-02
Despite its title, this book contains few applications to chemistry. What distinguishes it from most QM texts is the absence of physics-specific applications like solid state, and the careful, step-by-step process by which the author derives results. I'd recommend it to anyone (chemist, physicist, whatever) who wants to know nonrelativistic quantum theory. It's also a handy reference for a few subjects that have wide use outside QM, like group velocity and spherical harmonics. The style is a bit dry, and I doubt that I'll ever read it cover to cover, but as a textbook it's hard to beat.
Fantastic explanation of theory with math.......2001-10-24
This is exactly what I was looking for when I wanted to put a face to some of the more complex theories and physics that I've been studying on my own about the fundamentals of some string and quantum mechanics theories. He starts from the beginning and goes nice and fast, however its nice small steps he takes, you can read it at any pace but its a LOT packed into it. I'm just glad he was able to finish it without going crazy :) Thanks for taking the time to split up the math and put it all together into one source. This makes it much easier to apply some theory with this kind of background. The math is easily layed out and forshadowed. the formulas and values are explained as they are used and each propogation is shown and explained. It assumes knowledge of physics but explains anyway. I'm not a graduate student, but I can understand it anway, great work.

Book Description
This smooth introduction for advanced undergraduate students starts with the fundamentals of lasers and pulsed optics. Thus prepared, the student learns how to generate short and ultrashort laser pulses, how to manipulate them, and how to measure them. Finally, spectroscopic implications are discussed. This rounded text gives the student an up-to-date introduction to one of the most exciting fields in laser physics.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly good but not excellent.......2006-08-17
The second edition of this book is revised and enriched with new and hot materials. The concepts of "coherent control" and "attosecond pulses" are added as they become more and more significant.
The first 3 chapters of the books do not seem very useful. Although the authors tried their best, especially the discussion of "mode-locking" is not as clearly stated as Demtroder's "Laser Spectroscopy". More vivid, illustrative and tangible examples would be very useful.
The rest of the book can be considered good and in my opinion this books does not deserve more than 4 stars.
This short book is an excellent overview.......2000-03-27
I use femtosecond lasers in my graduate work, and I found this book an excellent source of review material in preparing for my oral examinations. It is not very detailed or mathematical, but has excellent phenomenonological discussions of a variety of laser properties and techniques. It is also handy because it is fairly recent. I found particularly useful the sections on amplification, semiconductor lasers, and ultrashort diagnostics.
This book is not a comprehensive guide to building and using an ultrashort pulse laser system because it lacks so much detail. However, the equations are explained very well, and the references seem fairly comprehensive.
The book is also completely missing a discussion of fiber laser and ultrashort pulse propogation in fibers. The section on nonlinear ultrashort optics is also far too brief.

Book Description
In this book, H. S. Green, a former student of Max Born and well known as an author in physics and in philosophy of science, presents an individual and modern approach to theoretical physics and related fundamental problems. Starting from first principles, the links between physics and information science are unveiled step by step: modern information theory and the classical theory of the Turing machine are combined to create a new interpretation of quantum computability, which is then applied to field theory, gravitation and submicroscopic measurement theory and culminates in a detailed examination of the role of the conscious observer in physical measurements. The result is a highly readable book that unifies a wide range of scientific knowledge and is essential reading for all scientists and philosophers of science interested in the interpretation and the implications of the interaction between information science and basic physical theories.

A deeper understanding!.......2003-08-12
It started with Alan Turing and John von Neumann: Classical computation follows the model of A. Turing,-- strings of bits, i.e., 0s and 1s; a mathematical model, now called the Turing mashine. Why not two-level quantum systems? The thought was long in coming: From Bohr and Heisenberg to Feynman! The bright idea finally arrived, and with vengeance. An model for computation based on two-level quantum systems was suggested in the 1980ties by R.P. Feynman and D. Deutsch. Then another wait: It wasn't until Peter Shor's qubit-factoring algorithm in the mid 1990ties that the subject really took off, and really caught the attention of the math community. The 'unbreakable' codes might be breakable afterall! The fact that Shor found
a polynomial factoring algorithm naturally shook up the encryption community as well; and for obvious reasons. New elements of thinking in the quantum realm, and not part
of the classical frame of mind, include the basics of quantum theory: superposition of (quantum) states, uncertainty, and
(quantum) coherence. Although these concepts are at the foundation of quantum theory, they make a drastic change in the whole theoretical framework for computation: Now when one passes from the classical notion of bit-registers to
that of qubit-registers, the laws of quantum mechanics take over; and exclude the traditional cloning principle of error correction. Something different must take its place: A new theory! Mathematical physicist and computer scientists must revisit Bohr, Einstein, Heisenberg, Pauli, and Dirac. In passing from logic gates to quantum gates(unitary matrices), the
concept of switching-networks from computer science changes drastically. It introduces new challenges, and new truely exciting opportunities. It is not easy for authors who break with tradition to make everyone happy;-- this is especially so in a new field,--one which has grabbed headlines, and one which
is at the same time interdisiplinary. -- This intriguing book covers several of the appropriate areas of physics (quantum theory, (some) experiment...), of artificial intelligence, of philosophy, of computer science (the mathematical physics side of the subject), and of math (operators in Hilbert space, and the theory of algorithms). In my opinion, the author did a great job. The level of the book is suitable for grad students in math, in CS, and in physics: It could perhaps have used some more worked examples and exercises. (Fortunately they can be found in other books on quantum computation, such as the Nielsen-Chuang book.) This book is timeless,-- and I expect it will also be popular ten years from now.
