          Book Description

Although super-critial fluid (SCF) technology is now widely used in extraction and purification processes (in the petrochemical, food and pharmaceuticals industries), this book is the first to address the new application of cleaning. The objective is to provide a roadmap for readers who want to know whether SCF technology can meet their own processing and cleaning needs. It is particularly helpful to those striving to balance the requirements for a clean product and a clean environment. The interdisciplinary subject matter will appeal to scientists and engineers in all specialties ranging from materials and polymer sciences to chemistry and physics. It is also useful to those developing new processes for other applications, and references given at the end of each chapter provide links to the wider body of SCF literature.

The book is organized with topics progressing from the fundamental nature of the supercritical state, through process conditions and materials interactions, to economic considerations. Practical examples are included to show how the technology has been successfully applied. The first four chapters consider principles governing SCF processing, detailing issues such as solubility, design for cleanability, and the dynamics of particle removal. The next three chapters discuss surfactants and micro-emulsions, SCF interaction with polymers, and the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) as a cleaning solvent. The closing chapters focus on more practical considerations such as scale-up, equipment costs, and financial analysis.

Many contributors to this book belong to the “Joint Association for the Advancement of SCF Technology” (JAAST). A primary motivation for the formation of JAAST was the growing worldwide need to replace ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) and smog-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in manufacturing processes. Although aqueous cleaning has been adopted successfully for many applications, water is not a panacea and SCF technology has emerged as a leading alternative.

            Book Description

Supercritical fluids are neither gas nor liquid, but can be compressed gradually from low to high density and they are therefore interesting and important as tunable solvents and reaction media in the chemical process industry. By adjusting the density the properties of these fluids can be customised and manipulated for a given process - physical or chemical transformation. Separation and processing using supercritical solvents such as CO2 are currently on-line commercially in the food, essential oils and polymer industries. Many agencies and industries are considering the use of supercritical water for waste remediation. Supercritical fluid chromatography represents another, major analytical application. Significant advances have recently been made in materials processing, ranging from particle formation to the creation of porous materials. The chapters in this book provide tutorial accounts of topical areas centred around: (1) phase equilibria, thermodynamics and equations of state; (2) critical behaviour, crossover effects; (3) transport and interfacial properties; (4) molecular modelling, computer simulation; (5) reactions, spectroscopy; (6) phase separation kinetics; (7) extractions; (8) applications to polymers, pharmaceuticals, natural materials and chromatography; (9) process scale-up.

              Book Description

Shape interrogation is the process of extraction of information from a geometric model. It is a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. The authors focus on shape interrogation of geometric models bounded by free-form surfaces. Free-form surfaces, also called sculptured surfaces, are widely used in the bodies of ships, automobiles and aircraft, which have both functionality and attractive shape requirements. Many electronic devices as well as consumer products are designed with aesthetic shapes, which involve free-form surfaces. This book provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods including nonlinear polynomial solvers, intersection problems, differential geometry of intersection curves, distance functions, curve and surface interrogation, umbilics and lines of curvature, geodesics, and offset curves and surfaces. This book will be of interest both to graduate students and professionals.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A powerful tool for CAD/CAM research & development.......2002-10-15

Many excellent books analyze models/methods to represent curves and surfaces in Computer-Aided Design &
Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems, but this is the first one focusing on solving some very complex geometric
modeling problems underlying many engineering applications. The authors identify these bottleneck problems,
analyze them in detail, and present state-of-the-art solution algorithms. These important problems are:

"Intersection problems" (Chapters 5 and 6), "Distance calculations" (Chapter 7),
"Curve/Surface Interrogation" (Chapters 8 and 9), "Computation of Shortest Paths" (Chapter 10), and
"Offset Curves and Surfaces" (Chapter 11).

In each one of the above chapters, the corresponding problem is fully analyzed using tools from advanced
Geometric Modeling, Numerical Methods and Differential Geometry, some of which are new results previously
available only in research journals. The authors have done an excellent job in collecting all these results in
a single volume, offering an invaluable tool to CAD/CAM professionals who do not have the time to study
and analyze themselves all this literature.

The solutions proposed go beyond standard tricks and heuristics: the problems are formulated as systems
of nonlinear equations and reliable solution-algorithms are offered based either on standard methods or
on fresh research. Robustness issues (accuracy, treatment of special cases, singularities, etc) are at the center
of discussion guiding the reader on dealing with the most difficult aspects of geometric-software development.

In short, this book is a powerful tool for CAD/CAM professionals (software architects/developers,
consultants, engineers/users, academic teachers and researchers, etc) as:
              1) Very useful results are analyzed, that alternatively are available only in advanced mathematical texts and current research publications.
              2) Problems are discussed in detail using theoretical results as well as examples.
              3) Robust solution methods are presented, based on a solid mathematical analysis as opposed to heuristics.
              4) All prerequisites are fully analyzed in the first 4 chapters, making the volume self-contained.

4 out of 5 stars Good computer graphics text.......2006-11-04

This text has a novel approach to entry level computer graphics using homogeneous coordinates entirely. I struggled a bit with the use of these representations in perspective transformations. However once I got it I found the derivations and formulas to be easy to get and easy to use. The book has an extensive set of exercises with complete answers. I deducted one star because the theoretical aspects of homogeneous transformations could use expansion and simplification.

Selma, Martin Luther King, the pitiful biography of Lee Harvey Oswald open this collection of thoughtful and timeless essays. In "Domestic Manners" Hardwick notes that in the 60's the temptations of self-destruction were everywhere.

John Reed, she reports, was a charming American enthusiast of revolution. As a journalist he was able to seize upon the revolutionary moment. (This observation, it strikes me, is ironic.) He was a radical idealist, in short, having been a treasured child of the bourgeoisie. Reed met Bill Haywood in 1913. Haywood had outstanding courage and revolutionary politics.

Reed was noticeable and he was vivid. His uniqueness was precisely fulfilled in his prose. For Reed the October Revolution was pageantry. Louise Bryant met Reed when he was visiting his family in Portland. Reed was a morally attractive man. He was not deep and reflective.

The power of terror speaks most clearly to those who have used it Hardwick states in considering a Lincoln Center production of the play DANTON'S DEATH. The playwright is notable for his existentialism and his alienation.

THE INVESTIGATION is taken from the 1946 testimony of SS men attached to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. The stage is a bare courtroom. A trial is inevitably a case history. Peter Weiss's play is a dream, a sublimation. Hardwick states the New York production of it was not good. Self-loving earnestness is an American curse in her estimation. Shakespeare's TIMON OF ATHENS is about the philanthropy the rich confer upon each other. In distress Timon's servants are loyal but his friends are not.

Simone Weil died of voluntary starvation according to the coroner. For her, willed deprivation was not new. She did not undergo deprivation for a pay-off. She sought to share in the misery of mankind. Her reading of history and culture was enormous. She was inclined to look upon history as alive. She wrote a moving literary essay on the ILLIAD.

In the piece on Thomas Mann Hardwick says that he was never young. The achievement of his youth was BUDDENBROOKS. As an artist Mann was steady. All his life Mann studied to understand the great artist. Mann had the rare gift of creating characters out of ideas. Homoerotic currents are strong in his writing.

In the title essay Hardwick points to Bartleby's reduction of language to essence. Melville's brothers were lawyers in the vicinity of Wall Street. Bartleby is found to be living in the office day and night. Hardwick's writing is so clear and so forceful she makes ideas previously considered exciting once again. I cannot think of a better essayist.
