Book Description
This important and exciting work brings together a high-calibre group of experts to discuss the practical application of genomic information to the development of drugs. Recent technological advances have led to a rapid acceleration in our ability to gather genetic data. The complete genetic sequences are now known for several organisms and accelerated programmes are in place for sequencing many other genomes, including human. The speed with which complete sequencing can be accomplished will continue to increase as new technologies come online. In principle, the scope for developing new diagnostic techniques and drugs is now greater than at any time in human history, but the pathway from genetic information to usable drug is a long and complex one.
This major book covers such subjects as the current state of the art in squencing technology, the applications of these new technologies to sequencing the genomes of various organisms, and the challenge of proteomics. Additional contributions deal with legal and ethical implications of the new uses of genetic data, and functional genomics from the point of view of the pharmaceutical industry.

Your Students Will Actually Read It!.......2000-04-01
This book condenses what is usually a gruelling two-semester curriculum into a brief but thorough text that can be navigated in a single semester. Concepts are summarized in easy to understand color tables. Each chapter contains an interesting aside/biography to keep students awake and show that the knowledge has important applications. The periodic table of elements and lists of primary organic functional groups are summarized inside the hard cover for quick reference. A solutions manual for the homework problems is sold separately.

Book Description
The leading text endorsed by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE). Covers the history, environment of embalming, chemicals and methods, and specific techniques and treatments based on bodily conditions. The third edition reflects updated OSHA standards and infection control guidelines, with new chapters on preparation rooms, instruments, and long-term preservation.
Customer Reviews:
its a good laugh.......2007-08-12
For one the book costs way too much for what it is.
You won't become an embalmer from reading this. Get your gloves on and get your hands dirty. Very much aimed for the American audience. If your your anywhere else in the world where the deceased have been dead for a week or two this will be no help at all. Very good if you want your nan to look like a clown.
Some good points to be made. If your in house and got all day to embalm 1 then this could prove useful. If your trade and got 8 to do in a day, forget it.
Lots of American legal info.
A real embalmer from England...
ok, but not great.......2007-01-11
The book was easy to read, but in the profession, I found that it was outdated and sometimes bordering on incorrect. I personally would recommend another mortuary textbook to a student or school.
Very Informative, Easy to understand.......2003-03-07
I am currently a student at the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Services in NYC and this is the textbook we use for our classes. I find the book very easy to follow and it makes the embalming and dying process, both Antemortem and Postmortem clear. I would definately recommend this book.
ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING BODY OF WORK!.......2001-08-06
Since I am not a funeral director but have been interested in the profession (I used to work with friends on the east coast), I could not put the book down because it captured and sustained my interest. As a novice reader to the mortuary profession, I could not believe how much technical information you had to know. It is almost like becoming a physician. Although the diagrams/pictures were not in color, just having them spiked and fueled my interest -- with actual embalming techniques.
Finally, my favorite unit was on embalming instruments. I highly respect morticians because of the administrative, logistical, creative, and artistic so-called 'hats' they must wear in order to do a professional service!
Amusing Topic, Dull Style.......2000-10-19
Ths tyle that this book was written in is pretty dran boring, but then again, it is a textbook, and they're supposed to be dull, I reckon. The section on the history of embalming is a bit sparse and the legal requirements will put one to sleep, but the actual theory and practice I found to be quite informative, if somewhat out-of-date. I wish the pictures were in colour (at least some of them) as the balck-and-white rendering defeats the purpose of some of them; for example, we are shown an example of someone who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in which the extremitieas are shown to be bright red -- a characteristic of that type of death -- and the picture illustrating this is not in colour, so one really does not get any additional information from it. There are chapters on dealing with "unusual" deaths -- hanging, refrigeration, poisoning, etc., positioning problems, the methods of aspirating the various sections of the body, organ and tissue donors, care of the autopsied body, embalming of infants and those in various stages of decomposition and most other relevant topics, but I would hate for this to be one's only source -- there are better texts available and of course nothing can beat hands-on experience. This may be a good place for an interested party to start, but I think a more modern text would be in order for actual funeral practice.
Book Description
The classic text, PERRINE'S LITERATURE: STRUCTURE, SOUND, and SENSE, Eighth Edition, continues to provide students with a comprehensive study into the principal forms of fiction, poetry, and drama.
Customer Reviews:
Good review.......2007-08-28
I would recommend this seller to anyone. I received my book in good condition and it was shipped quickly.
Great content, horribly constructed.......2007-05-18
I am an A.P. teacher who ordered several copies from Amazon, and after a year, the bindings on the books were destroyed. Not from mistreatment, they were destroyed from mere usage. I contacted my representive from Thomson who said that since I went through Amazon, I had to take it up with them. So I did. They said that after thirty days, it is not their problem.
My suggestion is, first and foremost, find another book. Sure the content is unparalleled, but the service from the publisher is awful. Second, if you must have this book, don't use Amazon. Go order this book directly from the publisher or you will lose your investment. For me, each book came out to be about $80. At seven books, my school district can't afford that each year.
Perrine.......2007-01-18
This book came in a timely matter, with minimal damage to it. Very good prouct.
Mostly a Compilation that is a Savage Plunder to Parents' Pockets.......2006-08-19
New editions of this book continue being published to have teachers require "the new edition" from students. This way the publisher and the compilers keep on plundering unashamedly the parents' pockets. Interestingly, to compile comes from the latin "compilare", which means to plunder. Compilation as it is, plus "obvious" literary theory, this book should cost no more than its weight in paper plus a few dollars. The obvious recommendation to the student is: when completed the course sell this "brick" before a new edition appears, and buy and read the full versions of the classics (Sophocles, Shakespeare, Lord Tennyson, Ibsen, Chekhov, Faulkner, Melville, Browning, J. Keats, Donne, Wordsworth, W. B. Yeats, ...); disregard all the remaining mediocre authors this book includes. Regarding Sophocles, Oedipux Rex, the translation the compilers have chosen is by Duddley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald. Fitts was playwriter, and Fitzgerald, academic as he was and popularly known for his translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey, was never a "translator" but a "paraphraser". Read the translations by Lattimore for a "taste" of the originals, instead. Regarding "obvious" literary theory" a few sentences choosen at random from the 9th edition will suffice: Drama "normally presents its action (a) through actors, (b) on stage, and (c) before and audience" (pp.1028).
"The sharpness and vividness of any image will ordinarily depend on how specific it is and on the poet's use of effective detail" (pp. 702).
"Talented authors achieve compression by exercising a careful selectivity" (pp. 274).
i really like this book.......2006-06-01
i originally got this book because I needed it for a class. In the end I used it for much longer. Its really good and I recommend it
Customer Reviews:
an excellent introduction to the study of genre........1998-08-06
Perrine approaches the three broad genres of literature-- short story, poetry, and drama--in an exciting, fun way for beginning literature students, or those required to take a literature course. And for the instructor, "Literature" is especially a beginning instructor's dream. Perrine organizes the genre's in three separate sections and provides solid, accepted critical material on craftsmenship. He also provides excellent study questions for students. The poetry section is especially good. He presents progressively more sophisticated poems and also gives side by comparisons of "bad" poems with "good" poems which have the same theme. In the past, a companion teacher's supplement was avaiable which was balanced, readable, and nonthreatening in that instructors could use the supplemental comments or not and feel comfortable either way.
