Described techniques of analysis include preparation of single-cell suspensions, DNA
Book Description
This book explains the ideas and techniques of statistical mechanics-the theory of condensed matter-in a simple and progressive way. The text starts with the laws of thermodynamics and simple ideas of quantum mechanics. The conceptual ideas underlying the subject are explained carefully; the mathematical ideas are developed in parallel to give a coherent overall view. The text is illustrated with examples not just from solid state physics, but also from recent theories of radiation from black holes and recent data on the background radiation from the Cosmic background explorer. In this second edition, slightly more advanced material on statistical mechanics is introduced, material which students should meet in an undergraduate course. As a result the new edition contains three more chapters on phase transitions at an appropriate level for an undergraduate student. There are plenty of problems at the end of each chapter, and brief model answers are provided for odd-numbered problems. From reviews of the first edition: '...Introductory Statistical Mechanics is clear and crisp and takes advantage of the best parts of the many approaches to the subject' Physics Today
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to statistical mechanics.......2003-05-09
I recommend this book to anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in stat mech. I also recommend it to beginning GRADUATE students of stat mech. I used it for my own graduate coursework and I found it to be extremely helpful.
This book provides a clean, uncluttered presentation of the principles of stat mech; does not lose sight of the physical reasons behind the mathematical manipulations; and most helpful of all, contains a good set of problems WITH SOLUTIONS! It has been more helpful to me in my graduate work than any graduate-level book!
In a next edition, maybe the authors can include a gentle introduction to the new renormalization group theory of phase transitions, and also increase the number and depth of problems.
If you plan on studying stat mech, get this book.

Book Description
This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of differential equations. To make the presentation concrete and appealing, the programming environment Matlab is adopted as a faithful companion. All the algorithms introduced throughout the book are shown, thus furnishing an immediate quantitative assessment of their theoretical properties such as stability, accuracy and complexity. The book also contains the solution to several problems raised through exercises and examples, often originating from specific applications. A specific section is devoted to subjects which were not addressed in the book and indicate the bibliographical references for a more comprehensive treatment of the material.
Customer Reviews:
easy to understand and use algorithms.......2005-04-11
As you would expect from Springer, here is a technically very accurate book. It goes over the main concepts of numerical analysis, which the authors call "scientific computing". Same thing, really. Unlike earlier years, where someone studying this field would have to write out her own Fortran code to apply the methods, we now have MATLAB. The authors chose this powerful package as one in which to explain and implement the algorithms.
These algorithms are essentially unchanged from what a book on the topic might have described, 20 years ago. Finding numerical integrals, roots of equations, solving linear systems of equations etc.
But using MATLAB helps streamline any coding. And you are encouraged to code, in the problems supplied by the book. There are even answers to some of these. So quite apart from understanding the concepts, a bonus is that you can become quite adept at fully using MATLAB's abilities as a research tool.

Book Description
The 20th century saw tremendous achievements and progress in science and
technology. Undoubtedly, computers and computer-related technologies acted as
one of vital catalysts for accelerating this progress in the latter half of
the century. The contributions of mathematical sciences have been equally
profound, and the synergy between mathematics and computer science has played a
key role in accelerating the progress of both fields as well as science
and engineering.
Mathematical sciences will undoubtedly continue to play this vital role in this
new century. In particular, mathematical modeling and numerical simulation will
continue to be among the essential methodologies for solving massive and
complex problems that arise in science, engineering and manufacturing. Underpinning this all from a sound, theoretical perspective will be numerical algorithms. In recognition of this observation, this volume focuses on the
following specific topics.
(1) Fundamental numerical algorithms
(2) Applications of numerical algorithms
(3) Emerging technologies.
The articles included in this issue by experts on advanced scientific and
engineering computations from numerous countries elucidate state-of-the-art achievements in these three topics from various angles and suggest the future directions. Although we cannot hope to cover all the aspects in scientific and engineering computations, we hope that the articles will interest, inform and inspire members of the science and engineering community.

Book Description
This book is concerned with the theory and techniques required in the construction and implementation of complex software systems. Improved understanding may come from developing suitable models and theories of such systems to guide appropriate experimentation. Alternatively, standard
mathematical theories and constructions may provide techniques directly usable in the design and implementation of new software. In any case, the use of these approaches involves the development of new tools, and using them leads to further insights which can improve the original theories and
models. The contributors to this book cover all these many aspects involved in the origin, development, and refinement of software systems. Some chapters break new ground, some represent the next stage in ongoing research programs, and others describe the next generation of software tools. In
addition to a readership of software engineers and computer scientists, the book offers a source of interesting research problems for mathematicians, whose work is vital for the continued development of the field.

Customer Reviews:
A note from the publisher, IEEE Press: a recent review.......1997-11-12
This review of Anders' book appeared in the October, 1997 edition of Choice Magazine: "In the definitive work on electric current ratings of cables, Anders, a research engineer at Ontario Hydro who has worked in this field for more than 20 years, puts together the latest advances in cable technology as well as information from the latest integrated electronic components standards to produce a very technically detailed work on this narrow topic. There are 12 chapters organized in three parts; each chapter has many useful references and is filled with equations and derivations. The basis for all cable ratings is heat production; as such, Anders discusses how the heat is produced and how to calcualte the resulting cable temperature in the first part of the book, "Modeling." The second part, "Evaluation of Parameters," shows how to calculate the electrical and thermal parameters of a cable needed for calculations presented in the first part. The final portion, "Advanced Topics, " covers special situations and numerical methods. This is an updated and more detailed book than B.M. Weedy's Thermal Design of Underground Systems (1988). Recommended for graduate students, researchers, and professionals." -- L.J. Bohmann, Michigan Technological University
