5 out of 5 stars Can Neo-Darwinism Explain Ultimate Human Love and Sacrifice?.......2006-06-22

Evolution and Ethics examines the burning questions of human morality from the standpoint of Christian thought and contemporary biology, asking where the two perspectives diverge and where they may complement one another. Representing a significant dialogue between world-class scientists, philosophers, and theologians, this volume explores the central features of biological and religious accounts of human morality, introducing the leading theories and locating the key points of contention. Central to these discussions are the questions of whether human actions are ever genuinely selfless, whether there is something in the moral life that transcends biological function, and whether one can sensibly speak of an overall purpose to the course of evolution. Evolution and Ethics offers a balanced, levelheaded, constructive approach to an often divisive debate.

Of interest in this volume are articles by Jeffrey P. Schloss and Discovery Fellow Joseph Poulshock. Poulshock recognizes that Darwinian explanations like "kin selection" can account for altruism within groups of closely related individuals. However human social interactions clearly require explanations which go far beyond Darwinian explanations. That is, nearly every major religion has proscriptions similar to the "Golden Rule." For instance, Christian notions of being the "good Samaritan" and Hebraic moral codes calling for kindness to foreigners, require explanations beyond reference to "selfish genes."

Poulshock explains that social groups with strong moral codes eventually become governed by those codes. Thus it is ideas--communicated through written and spoken language--which seem to have the greatest impact upon human ethics.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Overview of the Relevant Issues.......2004-10-22

This book is a terrific overview of the questions concerning the ULTIMATE SOURCE of moral values. Have values developed as part of human socio-cultural evolution? Are they nothing but the outer manifestation of the innerworkings of "selfish" genes? Is "morality" just a particular type of discourse used for conveying personal emotions about certain activities? Or do they arise from our "intuitions of the divine?" (Or perhaps some combination of these?). Highly recommended for anyone interested in current trends within the science/religion dialogue, and anyone interested in evolutionary psychology.

    Book Description

Donald Broom argues that morality and the central components of religion are of great value, and presents two central ideas. He asserts that morality has a biological foundation and has evolved as a consequence of natural selection, and that religions are essentially the structures supporting morality. Many philosophers and theologians write about morality and its origins without reference to biological processes such as evolution. Likewise, biologists discuss phenomena of importance to human morality and religion without taking account of the thoughts of others on these subjects.

    Download Description

Accepted codes of conduct and established religions are features of human societies throughout the world. Why should this be? In this book, biologist Donald Broom argues that these aspects of human culture have evolved as a consequence of natural selection; that morally acceptable behaviour benefits the humans and other animals and that a principal function of religion is to underpin and encourage such behaviour. The author provides biological insights drawn especially from work on animal behaviour and presents ideas and information from the fields of philosophy and theology to produce a thought-provoking, interdisciplinary treatment. Scientists who read this book will gain an appreciation of the wider literature on morality and religion, and non-scientists will benefit from the author's extensive knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying the behaviour of humans and other social animals.

Is morality "real"? If you believe in evolution, the answer is an unequivocal "NO". This may go against everything you think you know, but it's very easy to prove.

          1 out of 5 stars Flawed Assumption.......2006-06-14

This unphilosophical, silly book is does not deserve the time of a serious thinker. In rather circular fashion, it assumes truth to be precisely what it is denying, allowing for an ultrasimple, tautologous argument. But truth is not some singular, easily-definable concept. If one assumes that morality occurred through evolution, even by a series of "accidents" (which again contains hidden assumptions about reality), one is NOT required to concede morality is "untrue" or "not real." That is absurd. Our bodies would have come about through evolution as well--are they equally unreal? Is the entire physical world unreal? And if so, then perhaps it doesn't matter that morality is also unreal. Pure begging the question, etc. Utterly absurd. Philosophical conceptions of truth have moved way beyond this simplicity/erroneous idea. An evolved existent can have the same truth status as something assumed to be purely transcendent of time. In fact, many philosophers would say nothing is atemporal-- including various ethical creeds. So what? That doesn't make them untrue. This book relies on the assumption that moral truth must be traced back to a transcendental signified of ontotheology. But this is an assumption which one need not be required to make. Evolution and "the death of morality" have nothing to do with one another--from a societal standpoint or esppecially a philosophical one. As for a series of "accidents," must each "accident" be purely a random accident without some degree of determination/basis realtive to underlying reality?

                      Book Description

This book is concerned with the analysis, optimization and controllability of time-discrete dynamical systems and games under the aspect of stability, controllability and (for games) cooperative and non-cooperative treatment. The investigation of stability is based on Lyapunov's method which is generalized to non-autonomous systems. Optimization and controllability of dynamical systems is treated, among others, with the aid of mapping theorems such as implicit function theorem and inverse mapping theorem. Dynamical games are treated as cooperative and non-cooperative games and are used in order to deal with the problem of carbon dioxide reduction under economic aspects. The theoretical results are demonstrated by various applications.

                          Book Description

This volume develops a systematic study of time-dependent control processes. The basic problem of null controllability of linear systems is first considered. Using methods of ergodic theory and topological dynamics, general local null controllability criteria are given. Then the subtle question of global null controllability is studied. Next, the random linear feedback and stabilization problem is posed and solved. Using concepts of exponential dichotomy and rotation number for linear Hamiltonian systems, a solution of the Riccati equation is obtained which has extremely good robustness properties and which also preserves all the smoothness and recurrence properties of the coefficients. Finally, a general version of the local nonlinear feedback stabilization problem is solved.

                            Book Description

Based on a streamlined presentation of the authors' successful work Linear Systems, this textbook provides an introduction to systems theory with an emphasis on control. The material presented is broad enough to give the reader a clear picture of the dynamical behavior of linear systems as well as their advantages and limitations. Fundamental results and topics essential to linear systems theory are emphasized. The emphasis is on time-invariant systems, both continuous- and discrete-time.

                            Key features and topics:

                            * Notes, references, exercises, and a summary and highlights section at the end of each chapter.

                            * Comprehensive index and answers to selected exercises at the end of the book.

                            * Necessary mathematical background material included in an appendix.

                            * Helpful guidelines for the reader in the preface.

                            * Three core chapters guiding the reader to an excellent understanding of the dynamical behavior of systems.

                            * Detailed coverage of internal and external system descriptions, including state variable, impulse response and transfer function, polynomial matrix, and fractional representations.

                            * Explanation of stability, controllability, observability, and realizations with an emphasis on fundamental results.

                            * Detailed discussion of state-feedback, state-estimation, and eigenvalue assignment.

                            * Emphasis on time-invariant systems, both continuous- and discrete-time. For full coverage of time-variant systems, the reader is encouraged to refer to the companion book Linear Systems, which contains more detailed descriptions and additional material, including all the proofs of the results presented here.

                            * Solutions manual available to instructors upon adoption of the text.

A Linear Systems Primer is geared towards first-year graduate and senior undergraduate students in a typical one-semester introductory course on systems and control. It may also serve as an excellent reference or self-study guide for electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineers, applied mathematicians, and researchers working in control, communications, and signal processing.

Published in 1882, this extraordinary novel--an excercise in Swiftian irony combined with a love story in a furturistic setting--is entirely uncharacteristic of Trollope's usual drawing room conversations and hunting scenes. Set in the 1980s, The Fixed Period describes an imaginary,
antipodean ex-colony governed by a President who views himself as a benefactor of the human race, Orwellian double-speak and gunboat diplomacy. This is Trollope's strangest and most chilling novel.

                                        Book Description

Peter Fraenkel here gives a vivid account of a childhood in a middle-class, non-observant Jewish family in Nazi Germany, forced to emigrate to Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia) in 1939. Here the contrast could hardly be greater, from persecuted Jew, to "enemy alien" in colonial Northern Rhodesia, to re-assimilation into the privileged colonial elite. Following education in Northern and Southern Rhodesia he worked for the Northern Rhodesian and later, Central Broadcasting Service. Here his pioneering work and support for racial equality in a deeply racist society connected with his earlier life--"no fixed abode" but in tune with humane liberalism.

5 out of 5 stars The Jewish - African Nexus.......2005-05-02

Peter Fraenkel relates a fascinating autobiography in his book No Fixed Abode. It is beautifully written. The reader is transported on an exceptional historical odyssey. Growing up in Germany, at the peak of his formative years, Peter imbibed that unique German-Jewish symbiosis which molded his liberal-humanistic personality. Fortunately, the Fraenkel family succeeded in fleeing the horrors of pre-war Nazi Germany and reach freedom in the astonishingly new and exotic world of Africa.

Page by page I felt Peter's deep empathy for his fellow-human beings grow and crystallize. His reaching-out to help others was born in the frightening experiences of German anti-Semitism of the 1930s; it matured while growing up in the British colonial society in Africa and came to the fore with his own work and strivings to help Zambian society. Peter guides us through his impressions, thoughts and emotions in growing up in Germany and southern Africa. The reader experiences the gradual metamorphosis of an awkward German Jewish refugee into an accepted and welcome member of the colonial white European community in the British protectorate. Yet Peter reaches out of this restricting and rather stifling circle and through his work as a journalist for the BBC he blends in with and works with the local Zambians endeavoring to bring their special need for independence to the outside world.

Yet beyond it all let us not forget a central point underlying this entire story. It was Northern Rhodesia that offered free access to Jews escaping Nazi Europe. In fact, this is the fourth book describing the haven in Northern Rhodesia for fleeing Jewish refugees. Northern Rhodesia's gates were open while the rest of the free world shut its portals. The result was that the Fraenkel family became part of the German-Jewish-African nexus. I warn every potential reader: once you pick up this book you won't put it down again until you reach the last page.
