Pure luxury.......2001-11-26
"Estate Dream Homes: 150 Plans of Unsurpassed Luxury" is an opulent gathering of home designs. The book opens with a series of beautiful, full-color photos of interiors and exteriors of homes built from the designs in this book. Twenty-one different firms have designs represented in this collection; these firms include Larry E. Belk, Design Traditions, Home Planners, Northwest Home Designing, R.L. Pfotenhauer, and others.
A large proportion of the homes in this book lie in the 4,000 to 6,000 square foot range, although a number of homes are much larger. Both single-level and multi-level designs are included. Each design spread features floor plans and external drawings. Many different architectural styles are represented: Tudor, French Provincial, Georgian, Prairie, Pueblo, Greek Revival, and Victorian.
Some of the features found in these designs include the following: huge master baths (some with built-in spas and saunas), elegant curved staircases, covered verandas, 2-story windows, majestic Greek-style pillars, gabled dormers, prominent external chimneys, external balconies, and much more. So if you want to indulge in some home architecture fantasies, check out this book.
Excellent floor plans--but few pics.......2000-02-08
I love looking at luxury floor plans, and this book did not dissapoint me in that matter. There could have been some more interior pictures, but if you want to study extraordinary floor plans up to +9000 sq ft, this is the book for you.
Among the best.......1999-09-28
I adore looking at luxury dream home floorplans and to me "Estate Dream Homes" is one of the best of its kind.
Nothing but floorplans.......1999-09-13
The book starts with about 10 color pages of about 12 houses. Then there are 150 pages - one page per house plan. Most houses range in size from 4,000 - 8,000 sq ft. Most plans are architecturally interesting in some way or another. With a single page per house, it is hard to really appreciate the houses. House plans are available from their respective designer/architects.

Overcoming the fear of the "blank canvas".......2001-04-29
This book is a brilliant instruction book for both beginners and more experienced watercolourists. Highly recommended for beginners to watercolour who don't know where or how to start.
Tony Smibert takes you step-by-step through a series of painting exercises designed to free your creative juices while teaching the art of watercolour from basic washes through to more advanced techniques. He begins with simple wash and brushstoke instruction and takes the artist through to completed landscapes. I particularly liked his ideas on framing the earlier exercises as complete works of art in their own right.
He has apparently spent a great deal of time in Japan, and it shows in the powerful, yet simple techniques he employs and paintings he produces. His landscapes have a wonderfully atmospheric quality that he manages to teach to the reader. His instruction is detailed in a clear and easy to follow manner while leaving ample scope for the more adventurous students to apply their own interpretations to the paintings.
This book has given me the confidence to try anything - no longer do I stare at a blank sheet of paper fearful of the first stroke, or wondering where to begin. I find myself going back to his basic exercises to "limber-up" before starting on a larger project, or simply to have a bit of fun when I'm too busy to complete a "proper" work. He also has two videos available to accompiany the book which I have found invaluable, but not essential.

Essential Introduction: Bauhaus.......2007-07-25
Frank Whitford provides an essential introduction to the Bauhaus in his book, titled simply--Bauhaus. Whitford follows the events of the school from a historical perspective starting with Walter Gropius' plan and motivation for the school, to its ultimate end in Dessau at the hand of the Nazis. Whitford also presents personal perspectives through the journal entries and personal letters of the staff and students of the Bauhaus. These personal accounts help create a connection between the historical and the personal, and track the change in mood within the school. Whitford's book spends very little time on the impact of the Bauhaus, which is an analysis beyond the scope of this book. Frank Whitford's book, Bauhaus should be of interest to any student of art, design or education.

A great account of a great movement........2005-02-14
This a great tribute to perhaps the most influential design institute of the 20th Century.
The story of it's development, philosophy, success and untimely end is perfectly chronicled here.
The expert, novice and vaguely interested would find this book useful. It's a superb acaedemic source and an important catalogue. Bauhaus still influences design today and should also be regarded historicaly as yet another victim of the Nazi regime.
An excellent Introduction.......2001-11-13
Frank Whitford's Bauhaus in the Thames & Hudson World of Art series provides a fine basic introduction to the 20th century's most important school of art. Whitford writes engagingly and informatively. He begins by sketching the prehistory of the school in the 19th century arts-and-crafts movement and then goes on to examine van der Velde and the Weimar Art School that served as the basis upon which Gropius established the school. Whitford deals with all the major figures in the fourteen-year history of the Bauhaus and he uses contemporary documents (journals, personal accounts, etc.) to tell the story. I rank this among the best books in the Thames & Hudson series. In fact, I assigned it as a required text in a course on the Bauhaus and the Weimar Republic. Incidentally, teachers might be interested to know that Whitford has also written and narrated a fine 60" film "Bauhaus: Face of the 20th Century" (available in the Films for the Humanities series.)
Damn fine background........1999-08-03
Great background to an institution which was about as rock'n'roll as they come. The soul put into the establishment, its teachings, its beliefs (collective and individual) and the commitment of those involved is staggering - its a shame that it really doesn't have an equivalent today, but that's todays politic and media for you. Consice account that was almost written as a historical novel - Christ, I even read the bibliography at the end !! Off to find more books about it all now. Oh, and listen to Blumfeld, International Jetset & Earl Brutus whilst reading this too.
AJC 1999
An Excellent Book on the History of the Bauhaus!.......1999-02-09
Mister Whitford thoroughly chronicled the events that formed and shaped the Bauhaus - from the very beginning to the unfortunate end. A very good point of view - a must read for the Bauhaus enthusiast.
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated book commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of the National Gallery of Art's acquisition of the Index of American Design. Widely regarded as one of the New Deal's most important art projects, the Index began in 1935 as a unit of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Its aim was to compile and eventually publish a visual archive of American folk, popular, and decorative art from the time of settlement to about 1900. The approximately 1,000 artists involved in the project created more than 18,000 meticulous watercolor portraits of Americana.
The book presents 82 of the finest watercolor renderings along with a selection of the artifacts they represent. The original objects range from quilts, weather vanes, and hand-carved toys to carousel animals, stoneware, and cigar-store figures. Three essays explore the history, operation, and ambitions of the Index of American Design, examine folk-art collecting in America during the early decades of the twentieth century, and consider the Index's role in the search for a national cultural identity in the early twentieth-century United States.
Drawing on America's Past is the companion publication to an exhibition that runs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from 27 November 2002 through 2 March 2003.

Book Description
The Master of Modern, More Discoveries from the Julius Shulman Vaults.
TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered (2000) brought to light for the first time forgotten architectural masterpieces, drawn from photographer Julius Shulman`s personal archives. Paying tribute to residential and commercial buildings that had slipped from public view, Shulman`s stunning photographs uncovered a rarely seen side of California Modernism. This extensive, three-volume follow-up to that remarkable volume brings over 400 more architectural gems into the spotlight. Not just restricted to the West Coast this time, the images were taken all across the United States as well as in Mexico, Israel, and Hong Kong.
Each project and photograph in these volumes was personally selected from over 260,000 photographs over a two-year period by publisher Benedikt Taschen, who has enjoyed a close collaboration with the photographer since first publishing Julius Shulman: Architecture and Its Photography (1998). Augmenting the photographs are an introduction by photography critic Owen Edwards, an extensive biography by University of Southern California historian Philip J. Ethington, captions on decorative elements by Los Angeles Modern Auctions founder Peter Loughrey, biographies of key architects, and personal reflections from the photographer himself. Arts writer Hunter Drohojowska-Philp conducted months of interviews with Shulman to construct an informative and lively oral history and portrait of the times.

Book Description
The SF MoMA was one of the first museums in the world to present photography as a fine art. More importantly, however, the museum recognized photography as one of the most vital and expressive art forms of the modern period.
This superb collection of photographs features works from over 70 photographers including: Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Eugene Atget, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand.
Customer Reviews:
Good Exploration of the History of Photography.......2004-11-30
This paperback has 14 pages of text and 79 plates, the latter of which are "only a sampling of the approximately ten thousand photographs" in the SFMOMA collection. The photographers include Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Eugène Atget, Mathew Brady, Brassaï, Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, Roy DeCarava, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Ralph Gibson, Lewis Hine, André Kertész, William Klein, Dorothea Lange, Ralph Meatyard, Lisette Model, László Moholy-Nagy, Timothy H. O'Sullivan, Irving Penn, Man Ray, Jacob Riis, Alexander Rodchenko, August Sander, Cindy Sherman, Aaron Siskind, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Josef Sudek, William Henry Fox Talbot, Edward Weston, and Garry Winogrand.
The photos are nicely reproduced, better than in many exhibition catalogs. A handful of the plates are in color, and the rest are duotone black & white. The nationality, birth date, and death date of each photographer are given, which is helpful. I would have liked to see more text for each work (besides the title, date, medium, and dimensions), since the 14 pages of text specifically mention only one-third of the plates. It would also have been nice for the photos to be reproduced in sizes "more or less proportionate to those of the prints" as in "Ansel Adams at 100" of 2001. Instead, some small prints in reality are large in the book, and vice versa. Finally, the photos were made from 1843 to 1994, but the order of the photos in the book is 1850, 1848, 1843, 1854, 1850, ... , 1994, 1975, 1990, 1983, 1976, 1984, 1989, 1987, 1991, 1984, 1979, and 1991-1992. I did not see a strong reason to vary from a strict chronological order, although it was interesting that some photos facing each other were visually related (e.g., "strong background light," "shadow over part of photo") or thematically related (e.g., "children playing," "men with hats").
Overall, the book provides a good exploration of the history of photography. Buy this from Amazon.com!

Book Description
Uncompromising, unembellished, sometimes delapidated, and often featuring careless renovations and additions, more than 1500 Bauhaus structures remain standing in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, monuments that have stubbornly defied the course of time and retained the unbroken utopic spirit of their era. Photographed by Gnter Farg, whose oeuvre encompasses painting, graphic design, sculpture, and a body of architectural photographs of such buildings as the Villa Malaparte and the Wittgenstein House, these villas, studios, and working-class housing developments were designed in the 1930s and 40s largely by architects who had emigrated from Europe. Ariel Sharon, Sam Barkai, Genia Averbuch, Ze'ev Haller, Richard Kauffman, Erich Mendelsohn, and others endeavored to implement the social, technical, and aesthetic principles postulated by the Bauhaus before it was closed down by the Nazis in 1933.

Book Description
After graduating from the Sorbonne in 1921 until the outbreak of World War II, American Thérèse Bonney pursued a prolific career as a photojournalist. She founded the first American illustrated press service in Europe, whose specialty was modern French design and architecture. The Bonney Service did business with some twenty countries, but her homeland was always the chief focus of Bonney's tremendous energies. In America, she declared,"our offices, our cars, our clothes reflect modern life, but our furniture and our homes are of the past." She made it her mission to change that.
Housed at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Bonney's amazing and little-known archive comprehensively documents the modern movement in Paris between the wars. She photographed architecture and interiors, applied arts, and fashion in private residences, annual salons, and public exhibitions. René Herbst, Jean Dunand, René Prou, Paul Poiret, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray, Jean Puiforcat...her captions record the glory days of Art Deco and Moderne.
Bonney also recorded the changing face of Paris as the city embraced the modernist aesthetic. She turned her lens on shop fronts and window displays, advertising and graphic arts, theaters, restaurants, nightclubs, and bars. The international public was hungry to glimpse the glamour and finery of Paris, and Bonney's photographs delivered haute couture, jewelry, beauty salons, and chic department stores. 180 duotone photographs and illustrations.

Book Description
These five hundred photographs are a unique and exuberant record of Bauhaus activities and experiments during the 1920s and early 1930s. Significantly, most of the photographs were taken by artists-painters like Fritz Kuhr and Werner Siedhoff, designers Heinz Loew and Herbert Bayer, Bauhaus masters Hannes Meyer and Joosst Schmidt - who were not self-conscious photographers but who wanted to work with a new technological product.
The results constitute the largest and most comprehensive photographic archive currently available on the Bauhaus, supplementing visual material already published in Hans Wingler's monumental Bauhaus and presenting the school's more human side. Some of these photographs have never been published, while others have not been published since the period in which they were made.
Part I consists of over 100 "artistic" images, a listing of Bauhaus photography exhibits, an example of a Dessau Bauhaus lesson plan, including photography, and essays on various aspects of photography by Peterhans, Moholy, Vordemberge-Gildewart, Ernst Kallai, Fritz Kuhr, Willi Baumeister, Adolf Behne, Max Burchartz, Will Grohmann, and Ludwig Kassack. There is also a section on the use of photography with typography.
Part II is a Bauhaus album - nearly 400 illustrations of applied photography documenting the Bauhaus buildings, classroom projects, or day-today activities of students and faculty.
Egidio Marzona has assembled the world's foremost collection of works on paper documenting the revolutionary efforts of the Bauhaus. Marzona is also a well-known publisher of books on Russian Constructivism, Futurism, De Stijl, Dadaism, and a host of other movements and figures of the 20th-century avant-garde.
