    Book Description

The study of areas in the cerebral cortex has a long history, bringing empirical data into close relation with fundamental conceptual issues about the cortex. The subject is currently being revitalized with the advent of new experimental methods and this book brings a modern perspective to the study of these areas. Cortical Areas: Unity and Diversity explores the correspondence of different methods of mapping areas, the correlation between connectivity and areas, interspecies variations and the developmental origin of areal differences. Cortical areas are also discussed in relation to functional evidence, discussing for instance similarities in cybernetic function between different sensory areas. The book also considers morphological substrates for integration between areas before exploring fundamental questions often asked in neurobiology and brain theory.

I found this book very useful for the professionals involved in the extraction of raw materials from natural sources. Since you have the opportunity to browse the index, you can check first if the book contains information about the specific compound or subject that you are looking for. The book is very well illustrated.

This book is basically a listing of multiple species and all the genus's within that species that contain alkaloids, there is hardly any mention of the type of alkaloids, just whether or not there was a alkaloid present.Basically a list of lists of latin names...you would have to take it to the next level of discovery to find any really usefull info.

        Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof in Germany face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof to Germany? How important is Germany compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof vary from one country of origin to another in Germany? On the supply side, Germany also exports cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof. Which countries receive the most exports from Germany? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof in Germany. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof for those countries serving Germany via exports, or supplying from Germany via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Germany fits into the world market for imported and exported cinchona alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Germany in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Germany is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Germany compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for opium alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof for those countries serving United States via exports, or supplying from United States via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where United States fits into the world market for imported and exported opium alkaloids, their derivatives, and salts thereof. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for United States in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that United States is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize United States compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Were the Nazis secretly researching the occult, alternative physics and new energy sources' This scientific-historical journey tracks down the proof and answers these fascinating questions: * What were the Nazis developing in Czechoslovakia' * Why did the US Army test the atom bomb on Hiroshima' * Why did the Luftwaffe fly a non-stop round-trip mission within twenty miles of New York City in 1944'

2 out of 5 stars Intriguing but ultimately disappointing.......2007-04-05

According to the author's preface, "This is not a work of history. But neither is it a work merely of fiction." Unfortunately, it would have been much more entertaining had it been a work of fiction by any decent thriller writer.

The first part of the book argues that the Nazis had multiple functional atomic bombs in 1944-45, the capture of which was the main reason for the success of the Manhattan Project. This is an intriguing premise and plausible enough if you don't worry overmuch about the author's heavy reliance on secondary sources (including a manuscript published only on the Internet), and if you are willing to overlook some very tenuous chains of reasoning. For example, the author describes several conflicting accounts of the death of a highly placed SS officer allegedly in charge of Nazi secret weapons research: "No one, no where can advance anything like a consistent account of the date, location, time, or even method of Kammler's death... In all likelihood, therefore, Kammler did not die at all..."

Still, you may be able to maintain your suspension of disbelief until you get into part 2, which concerns Nazi experimentation with flying saucers, "quantum numerology", "vorticular physics", and other -- let us say -- unconventional areas of research. Of course, it is entirely possible that some Nazis did investigate these areas, but to treat them seriously only undermines the credibility, such as it is, of the arguments presented in the first part. Part 3 goes downhill even faster as it attempts to link the alleged UFO crashes in Roswell with secret Nazi research projects.

I give the author full marks for foreshadowing and hinting at vast dark secrets to be revealed. Unfortunately (perhaps inevitably), the actual revelations are rather anticlimactic, since they are bound to strike anyone but another conspiracy theorist as just plain silly. Still, I could see the seeds for half a dozen adventure novels in this book. Perhaps one day someone will write one.

I found the book to be very readable and full of references to documentation supporting to the hypotheses. I imagine that at some point in time in the future, the author may need to do another book to "update" us on material as it is released from various governments. As others have mentioned, there are typos, from the printer, not proofing, before printing. However, I found that the typos did not cause any difficulties in reading it. Overall the author proposes several well researched hypotheses, and presents them well.

                    2 out of 5 stars Utter Nonsense.......2006-06-06

Besides the constant typos, the complete lack of proofreading there is the obvious fabrication of "facts", like the giant air field with 40 huge Heinkel bombers waiting to bomb New York. A friend in Norway who is also a WW2 affectionato tells me there never was an airfield like that, nor anything bigger than FW 200's stationed there. The "scientific" speculation toward the end of the book is laughable. Save your money and buy something with some credibility.

3 out of 5 stars Who proofread this book??.......2005-11-25

To being with, who proofread this book? There are typos on virtually every page. It is very distracting to read text like this. When I see this I wonder if the author really knows how to spell. There are some intriguing ideas in this book but most of the topics have been covered elsewhere, and by far better writers. Three stars for effort.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating and thoughtfully engaging historical treatise.......2005-03-07

In Reich Of The Black Sun: Nazi Secret Weapons & The Cold War Allied Legend, author and iconoclast Joseph Farrell provides intriguing answers to a series of hitherto unasked questions: Why were the Allies worried about an atom bomb attack by the Germans in 1944? Why did the Soviets threaten to use poison gas against the Germans? Why did Hitler insist in 1945 that holding Prague could win the war for the Nazis? Why did General George Patton's Third Army race to control the Skoda Works at Pilsen in Czechoslovakia instead of heading for Berlin? Why did the American army not test the uranium bomb it dropped on Hiroshima? Why did the Luftwaffe fly a non-stop round trip mission to within twenty miles of New York City in 1944?. Reich Of The Black Sun is a simply fascinating and thoughtfully engaging historical treatise that reveals the Nazis fascination with the occult, alternative physics, as well as new energy sources and weaponry. Inherently thought provoking reading, Reich Of The Black Sun draws upon a wealth of documentation and an "alternative history" discourse that is as thoughtful as it is thought provoking. Very highly recommended reading and a seminal addition to personal and academic World War II historical studies collections.

5 out of 5 stars As profound as his poetry, Herbert's Prose.......2007-08-23

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I had never even heard of Zbigniew Herbert until I read the New York Review of Books' article on him some months ago. Milosz and Szymborska were my main Polish "experience." Herbert's poetry opened new worlds and new understanding of my own cultural past (my mother's family came from Poland). This "little book," from its charming and self-deprecating title---a boomerang, a cross-cultural, linguistic pun--to its conclusion, a genuinely new look (new to me, at least) at old "places" and cultural presumptions. He made me re-think oh so many things. He lost me a couple times (he seems to know everything and read everything), but his sharp perceptions and love of all things human soon charmed me all over again.
This book gave me a glimpse into the person who became the poet Herbert. We all know how hard it is to find someone to go to museums with, to travel with, to talk over "what we did today." Z. Herbert is the ideal travel companion. And you get a glimpse into the mind and heart of a great poet. A charming side kick to his searing, compassionate and monumental poetry. He's not only a poet equal to any of the 20th century, he's a charming person you wish you had gotten to know when he was alive. A great read. (can think of no better small book to bring to the places he (the barbarian) finds in corners of the "garden."

Zbigniew Herbert (died 1998) is counted among the finest poets of 20th century Poland, on a par with Szymborska and Milosz, world-famous Nobel Prize winners. This book of essays is a record of his journeys in France, Italy and the Netherlands: from the rock-paintings of Lascaux, through the medieval architecture of the great cathedrals, to the quiet consummate perfection of the Flemmish Masters. The rich meditation on art and life is your reward for joining the eccentric and humane poet with his 19th century Baedekker guide.
