    Book Description

The central thesis for plant ecology is that climate exerts the dominant control on the distribution of the major vegetation types of the world. This book sets out to examine this often neglected area in two ways. In the first part the author analyses the distribution of species in relation to climate over different scales of time and place. In the second, he reviews the various approaches to explaining observed correlation between plant distribution and climate, and to establishing the mechanisms of control in physiological and biochemical terms. Dr Woodward is an authority on plant-climate relationships, and has made some of the most important contributions to our understanding of the subject. This book builds on his extensive knowledge of the subject to provide a modern text on this basic problem of plant ecology, encompassing the techniques of palaeoecology, climatology, ecology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics.

        Description:
This study reviewed the distribution of ten common savanna trees in Namibia. Tree distributions were investigated in relation to bioclimatic, topographic and edaphic variables at a national scale. The factors of importance at these broad geographic scales appeared to be rainfall, substrate and, likely, the incidence of frost. Baikiaea plurijuga, Burkea africana, Guibourtia coleosperma and Pterocarpus angolensis seem to reach their bioclimatic limits in Namibia. At the local level, plant traits become important and contribute to explaining distribution patterns. High water and/or nitrogen use efficiency (Acacia erioloba, Colophospermum mopane), dual water obtaining strategies (Faidherbia albida), fire tolerance (e.g. Acacia species, Burkea africana and Pterocarpus angolensis) and drought tolerance (Boscia albitrunca) are some key attributes providing additional explanations for current distributions. Amongst the selected trees and at broad geographic scales, below-ground adaptations are governed by rainfall regime in combination with coarse-textured soils, whereby shallow-rooted trees prevail in the Kalahari sandveld. Deep-rooted species are found largely on non-sandy soils. Physiological performance of many trees appears to be directly linked to rainfall regime and trees may hence show varying performance throughout their distribution range. Insight into plant functional attributes of trees in Namibia is required to develop appropriate management strategies in the light of climate change. Modelling climate change impacts should consider the relative contribution of bioclimatic versus local environmental factors that explain the current distribution patterns of the selected trees.

                    Book Description

This book derives from a popular three-day ACS short course, "Pharmacology for Chemists", which the author has taught for 20 years. Pharmacology is the scientific study of drugs, including their composition, uses, and physiological effects. While not traditionally taught to organic and medicinal chemists, an understanding of pharmacology is becoming essential for maintaining the dynamic role of the drug development researcher. Pharmacologic texts are usually organized around the practice of clinical medicine or classes of drugs; this book uses chemistry as its foundation.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2004-08-28

This book is a one stop shop for Chemists wanting to be familiar with the essentials of Pharmacology. Cannon also adopts the same perspective, always giving stress on the chemical basis of the action of drugs, as well as neurotransmitters, hormones and intracellular signalling molecules. The first part of the book deals with general principles, which Cannon beautifully explains in a nutshell. Topics include the blood-brain barrier, drug receptors, pharmacological assays, metabolic inactivation and modifications of drugs by organs, basic pharmacokinetics, and properties of membranes and cells. The latter part is focused on particular systems. It is especially in discussing the Central Nervous System that the book really shines. Cannon talks in detail about the neurochemistry and physiological action of several important neurotransmitters and their agonists & antagonists. He also discusses the most important diseases arising from malfunctioning of the CNS. The chemistry of addiction also receives due exaplanation. Later chapters include discussions of cardiovascular drugs and drugs which are used to treat Asthma and Allergies.
Pharmacology is a vast science, and it not possible for a utilitarian chemist to work through the grand tomes on the subject to get what he wants. Cannon's book largely remedies this situation, and provides him with the essentials, without overloading him with information. This slim volume is a must on the shelves of Medicinal Chemists, Biochemists and any professional working in, or interested in Drug Design.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the medicinal chemist.......2000-11-13

Reading this book is much easier after taking the author's course. You get a better feeling for how the book is laid out after listening to the author's lecture style. An organic chemist by training, the author naturally gears this book to the organic chemist. He gives just enough physiology to understand the pharmacology behind it. The book follows his lecture course fairly well with more in-depth discussion on topics of interest. A standard reference text that should be in any chemists' library starting out in the pharmaceutical field.

                        Book Description

U·X·L expands their line of science resources in response to requests from librarians and teachers to bring you Chemical Elements. This 3-vol. title provides in-depth, current and accurate information on 112 known chemical elements, plus coverage on recently-discovered elements 113 through 118 (now waiting approval from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry).

Chemical Elements follows U·X·L's highly-praised style by covering this difficult topic in a manner and writing level accessible enough for younger and middle school students, yet appropriate for high school students, too. Adding to its appeal are approximately 120 black-and-white illustrations and an 8-page color photo insert in each volume that augments the text.

Through standard rubrics, researchers will learn how the element was discovered and by whom, the element's practical role in everyday life, who or what it is named after and more. Sidebars spotlight well-known products containing the element, trivia on famous events relating to the element, definitions of difficult words and more. Additionally, added value is provided with lists of further reading, a timetable of events, a glossary of terms, a general bibliography, periodic table endsheets and a general index.

                              Book Description

This definitive reference book, designed for use at all levels, explains both current and historical methods of naming chemical compounds. It explains and provides a rationale for the methods used in chemical nomenclature. Terms are defined, and numerous examples add clarification. The 16 chapters proceed from elementary substances to nonstoichiometric and molecular compounds, gradually building a coherent system for communicating information about chemical entities. Among the specific topics discussed are homoatomic and heteroatomic species, coordination compounds, polymeric compounds, nonmetal hydrides and their derivatives, polyboron hydrides, chain and ring compounds, organometallic compounds, nonstoichiometric species, isotopically modified species, and stereoisomers.

                                        Customer Reviews:

                                        5 out of 5 stars Classic Spark.......2006-07-31

The Ballad of Peckham Rye (1960) seems more typical Sparkian fare than 1958's Robinson, which is to say more arch, more satirical, and more stylistically bizarre. And yet, while in Robinson Spark uses realism to loosen readers from their moorings so that they founder in the depths of what seemed to be a straightforward story, in Peckham Rye her wry, detached sketches release the reader into a kind of drunken clarity about such Big Ideas as, say, human nature. Reading this short novel, I told a friend at the time, felt like being in one of those whiskey-induced hazes in which certain lines and observations blaze with a delightful, transcendent truth--for example, "Dougal gazed at him like a succubus whose mouth is in its eyes," or "My lonely heart is deluged by melancholy and it feels quite nice"--while the lesser details, like What Is Actually Going On, recede elegantly into obscurity.

5 out of 5 stars Wry and Clever.......2000-10-11

Dougal Douglas (or Douglas Dougal, depending on who you're talking to) may be a devil, and some people think he seems more Irish than Scottish. Whatever else he is, he is a lot of fun. THE BALLAD OF PECKHAM RYE lacks the sympathetic, possibly autobiographical central character found in many Spark novels (THE COMFORTERS, THE BACHELORS, etc.); however, it doens't fall into the black hole that swallows THE DRIVER'S SEAT or other works consumed by Spark's sense of evil. Instead, Dougal Douglas, the ever-present mischief-maker, takes the place of the sympathetic center. He wreaks havoc, but only by bringing out the devil in others--he himself has a kind of curious innocence in the midst of their scheming and violence, and acts as a (presumable) spokesman for Spark when he categorizes their various moralities (Functional, Emotional, Puritanical and Christian).

Such a summary doesn't begin to capture the delight and wit of one of Spark's most enjoyable and economical (again, not a page too long, which cannot be said for many of even our best writers today) books.

5 out of 5 stars An enigmatic gem.......2000-03-25

Dougal Douglas, the protagonist of this short novel, is a modern-day trickster, stirring up the sleeping industrial town of Peckham, where secrets and neuroses are in abundance. I loved Ms. Spark's sense of comedy. It makes her books always a fun read, and it's subtle enough so it never becomes an annoyance to distract one from the story.

4 out of 5 stars Long Read for a Short Novel.......1999-11-09

Loved the novel and loved the story. There was too much inside British stuff in the novel for a Houstonian like me to get the irony of.
