In his monumental 1687 work Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, known familiarly as the Principia, Isaac Newton laid out in mathematical terms the principles of time, force, and motion that have guided the development of modern physical science. Even after more than three centuries and the revolutions of Einsteinian relativity and quantum mechanics, Newtonian physics continues to account for many of the phenomena of the observed world, and Newtonian celestial dynamics is used to determine the orbits of our space vehicles.
This completely new translation, the first in 270 years, is based on the third (1726) edition, the final revised version approved by Newton; it includes extracts from the earlier editions, corrects errors found in earlier versions, and replaces archaic English with contemporary prose and up-to-date mathematical forms.
Newton's principles describe acceleration, deceleration, and inertial movement; fluid dynamics; and the motions of the earth, moon, planets, and comets. A great work in itself, the Principia also revolutionized the methods of scientific investigation. It set forth the fundamental three laws of motion and the law of universal gravity, the physical principles that account for the Copernican system of the world as emended by Kepler, thus effectively ending controversy concerning the Copernican planetary system.
The illuminating Guide to the Principia by I. Bernard Cohen, along with his and Anne Whitman's translation, will make this preeminent work truly accessible for today's scientists, scholars, and students.

Excellent translation with helpful apparatus.......2007-06-11
I am writing my dissertation on Newton and have found this translation incredibly helpful and surprisingly readable.
The Principia is one of the most difficult and inaccessible books ever written -- so much so, in fact that even John Locke (himself a pretty smart guy) had to ask Christian Huygens to explain much of it to him. This difficulty was intentional, because Newton did not want people who only understood math a little to try and undermine his arguments. For this reason, he rewrote book three so that only those who had read and understood book 1 could understand its concepts.
People laugh when I tell then that I own a book with a three hundred page introduction, but it's a book that needs a three hundred page intro. In their intro, Cohen and whitman describe the history of the principia, its structure, an explanation of where prior translations have fallen short, and -- most importantly -- note which of the Principia's sections have been most significant during and after Newton's time. This is helpful so that when you get to each section, you are more likely to notice which elements may have seemed most controversial, where he is taking down Descartes' vortices, etc. I'm not saying I agree 100% with cohen and whitman on all of their points, but they have produced a work that does not simply translate the book; it also shares the writers' substantial knowledge about the principia.
This is an essential and monumental translation. If you are at all interested in early modern science, you must own it.

What I have to say is Newton.... What else are you lookin for in a Physics book. Ohh yeah the only problem it has that its size is such a college book(huge), and it is not hard cover.
An Engrossing and Time Consuming Masterpiece of Science and Literature.......2005-09-22
Principia explains with great detail some elements of Eucledian geometry, Calculus, Fluid mechanics, Three laws of Gravity and The Method of the Universe. Newtons three hundred year old advice remains true today to read Book One and Three while skipping Book Two altogether. I can honestly say that subject is not too difficult but is guilty of being well conceived but poorly worded. The latter was Newtons own intention to make its reading very exclusive and making him less vunerable to his contemporary critiques. This version has the diagrams illustrated on multiple pages for each Scholium to avoid the constant turning of its pages. I advice a slow read of Book 1 and 3. The last Scholium of Book 3 is the best discussion as to the existance of God that I have read. Long live the spirits of Shakespeare, Newton, Vermeer and Beethoven.

The Principia is the basis for much of modern science. It is swallowed hook, line and sinker by mathematicians and people in physics as a 'holy grail.' It is a continuation of very old fashioned thinking, hooked on 'cause and effect' relationships, Aristotelian in nature. One would think that modern science could see through this veil of antiquity, but seemingly has not yet had the courage to do so.
It is essential reading, however, so see how far 'science' has not moved for nearly 400 years.
This particular translation is of interest in that half of the book tries to explain and support the original text. Bit too hard of a sell to justify Newton's arguments. Again, it is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the flaws of modern 'science.'
Wonderful overview, somewhat overwhelming........2004-09-07
This is a wonderful reference, but frankly, it was overwhelming for me. Let's just say that while the first two sections of this book were clear, informative, meticulously and thoroughly footnoted and annotated, the last section-- the actual translation-- proved beyond my abilities. I'd HIGHLY recommend a college-level geometry course before attempting to read the actual translation of Newton's revolutionary work.
Frankly, the combination of archaic verbiage (Cohen kept a number of obsolescent terms in translating from the original Latin), combined with a predominately narrative style (reading in an entire paragraph what can in modern mathematical symbology be articulated in a single line) combined with my lack of working analytic geometry enabled me to follow this seminal work conceptually, but not in detail. Other reviwers have suggested that a working knowledge of calculus and Newtonian physics is required. I disagree. To follow Newton's proofs in detail, it is Euclidean geometry that is required. Newton's Principia CONCEPTUALLY utilizes calculus, but the proofs themselves are Euclidean with the concept of "infinitisimally small" added to the equation. I have single- and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations (first-, second-order, and partial), and graduate-level statistics under my belt. Junior high school geometry is insufficient to understand his work. So far, I am studying tensors, differential geometry/exterior calculus with respect to gravitation physics without too much difficuly. Geometry!
Otherwise, this book was wonderful. Section One is a thoroughly researched historical background. Social setting, scientific thought at the time, the controversies of the times, historical perspective, insights into Newton himself. Wonderfully referenced and annotated.
Section Two is a clear "How to Read" section-- discussing section by section of the Principia what the main concepts and issues are, even critiquing Newton's flaws and obvious attempts to fill in gaps or alter data when existing data were insufficient to his theories! Cohen even guides us step-by-step through some of the more important proofs in the Principia-- proofs that for the most part I followed, except for certain geometric assumptions that I had to assume were true.
My fascination has always been relativity... which I am working on understanding now. When finished, I may read a college-level text in analytic geometry, then come back to this. But I was impressed by the sheer breadth of conceptual material Newton covered. Certainly entitling his last book of The Principia "The System of the World" was justified.

The arrogance of one man will never cease to amaze me, probably even more so than all the bamboozling he does to continue to push such doomed 'theories' that are more of a religion than science (i.e. string 'theory') onto the scientific world at large. The fact that he presumes to be the co-author with the likes of Newton should already tell you what you're in for. His over inflated ego adds nothing and in fact detracts from what Newton had already laid out beautifully. Please Steven Hawking, do us all a favor and disappear quietly into one of your black holes-preferably one that leaves no further information about you behind.
An awe-insipring work, but not a useful source of information.......2006-12-05
A few years ago I was bored with most of what was available in book stores, and it seemed as though I had read through everything interesting (a few things that were not). My desire to be intellectually wowed lead me to purchase this book, and it served its purpose. Newton's ideas are not that difficult to follow if you take time to think about them, but Newton did not simply have to follow these principles; he had to derive them himself, and within a single lifetime I might add. This work allowed me to appreciate the brilliance of Newton in a similar manner as one appreciates an impresseive work of art, and like many fine works of art, its ability to display the impressive magnitude of its creator's abilities far outshines its ability to teach the observer something new. In a world void of any other books on physics or mathematics I suppose The Principia would be adequate as an educational resource, but in a world where far better textbooks exist, this book no longer retains much pedagogical value.
Poor Quality Rendition of Newton's Masterpiece.......2005-12-12
I can hardly believe Hawking lent his credibility to this edition. Although his motivation of getting people to read classics is great, this edition barely contains any Hawking commentary, is riddled with errors and omissions, and fell apart after just a couple of months of use. Buy the Green Lion or the big Blue edition instead!
This is a key masterpiece in the history of Science........2000-11-13
I bought this book not for the purpose of learning Classical Mechanics from it, but for the scientific curiosity of learning how the great Isaac Newton presented his revolutionary scientific ideas to the world. Of course, it is difficult to read. This is an old translation of a book written in Latin more than 300 years ago!
This book is a jewel. Just like the original works of Einstein, Maxwell, Heisenberg, Schroedinger and all those giants. The person buying this book should not expect to find a clear didactic textbook when originally it was not written for the layman, but for the expert scientific community of its time. Buy this book, sit back, scan through it, and enjoy a true piece of history.

I read up to Prop 6 and could not quite carry on. His language is not easy to understand. I hope someone will publish a Dictionary of it. Anyway, his proof of Kepler's 2nd theorem is clever, and he is very rigorous mathematically for his time. ...

An Additional Perspective on Poor Miss Finch.......2007-01-07
The two other reviews of this book are extremely perceptive and well-written. I'd just like to add more on what's truly special about this book, and why I think it deserves a little better notice than it gets.
Yes, the plot is improbable, but it's not exactly singular for that alone. A lot of Victorian-era fiction demands we suspend disbelief. It's a fact the Victorian audience wasn't as completely jaded as we are in the 21st century, so judging it by today's standards isn't entirely fair. The book is romantic and at times laughingly improbable, yes, but it's still what I'd consider a ripping good yarn of a book.
Aside from this, what made it exceptional at the time was the fact no one had really written from a blind person's perspective before, or at least not with the sort of detail and thought Collins did. The passages written after Lucilla regains her sight (okay, cat out of bag partially but there's MUCH MORE to it) are wonders of insightful prose. Collins describes her challenges with things like depth perception, and in thinking about it doesn't that make perfect sense? Lucilla has to close her eyes, at first, just to make her way across a room. Distance has no meaning for her as she'd never seen it before, or hadn't since before she was one year old.
Writing was a challenge, too, though she could write when she was blind. She knew how to form characters but couldn't recognize them when she saw them, much less make them by use of her sight. In another very moving scene Lucilla is shown a round and a square object, and asked "which is round?" She couldn't say. She'd never SEEN the concepts of round and square before. Again, she had to close her eyes and feel them both to know the answer.
Throughout all these "tests" Lucilla felt completely humiliated and stupid that she couldn't do these very basic things, and declared she wished she were blind again. Really moving stuff, written with so much empathy and attention to detail.
That's an even more exceptional dimension to Poor Miss Finch, in case anyone wasn't swayed by the great storyline. I recommend it very highly to those who love Victorian fiction and would like to explore more of Wilkie Collins's works.
A Real Curio from the Author of "The Moonstone".......2002-01-30
Wilkie Collins will be justly remembered as writer responsible for "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White," both written in the 1860s, but after the golden decade he continued to write pretty good books, and his fame was not to suffer very much even though he never gained the zenith of his reputation he gained by these two masterpieces. "Poor Miss Finch" belongs to such post-"The Moonstone" period of the 1870s when he wrote quaint books -- less mystery but more unusual situations. "Poor Miss Finch" is one of them.
The story goes around the heroine Lucilla Finch, who lost sight because of cataract since childhood, and now she leads an independent life in quiet countryside. In her life joins the narrator Madame Prantolungo, and the identical twins (both very handsome) Oscar and Nugent. She falls in love with Oscar, and he in her, but one secret he can never disclose to her greatly troubles him, because by doing so, he might lose her love. In the meantime, Lucilla is given a chance to restore her sight. Then, Collins goes on; What if, with the amazing twists and turns of the story, Lucilla is led to think that Oscar's twin brother Nugent is Oscar himself?
You say it is a very preposterous development (I remembered David Cronenberg film "Dead Ringers" made in 1988), and that has been the general reception of the book since the publication. But the story keeps a good pace, and if you just suspend your disbelief for a while, you may forget the outrageous situation. After all, it was from the pen of master of suspense. But more important thing is behind the surface of text.
Oxford Classics gives very usuful introduction of Catherine Peters, author of acclaimed biography of Wilkie Collins "The King of Inventors," and she places the book in the historical context to explain several aspects of the book. One of the most intriguing is the fact that Collins researched thoroughly medical records of people who regained their sight after long-time blindness since childhood, and their reaction to the newly-given power of seeing. Lucilla experiences many difficulties in identifying objects she sees, and Collins makes good use of those records. Another aspect of the novel which Peters points out is that Collins uses blindness of "Poor Miss Finch" as a means of criticizing rigid Victorian moral codes. As a blind girl, Lucilla is less restrained in observing the strong sense of "respectability." She is made a little willful, obstinate heroine, but it is clearly intentional. With these things in mind, the book might become more entertaining, and inform you something about Vitorians.
As a literary work, "Poor Miss Finch" never achieves the height of "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White," so I recommend those two books if you haven't read them yet. However, if you are interested in something very unique, you can try this one.
As Peters says in Introduction, intriguing theme of blindness is recorded in Dr. Oliver Sacks's tale "To See and Not See." This tale can be found in his book "Anthropologist on Mars," and partly became the basis of a film "At First Sight" (1999) starring Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino. The film is not a masterpiece, but still gives some insight to the topic.
A flawed effort..........1999-10-13
Lucilla Finch, the protagonist mentioned in the title of this unusual Collins' novel, is not one of his more endearing heroines. Oft times impetuous and fickle, even in her gentlest moments she's impossibly dull, even with the "affliction" of blindness. This is one of the many flaws in this rare Collins novel. The plot is mercilessly silly and wildly implausible. Collin's characters are mostly cardboard- with the exception of the narrator. Collins is not asking for reader's pity in Lucilla's plight for love in the sighted world, but pity for those who are bound to it's narrowed understanding. Not one of Collins' more accomplished works yet in many ways deeply thought provoking.

Her first vision is of Nugent, who sabotages Oscar by assuming his identity and making it impossible for Oscar to reveal the truth. Oscar goes abroad, becoming a nurse, but returns in time to rescue Lucilla-who is blind again-from marrying Nugent.
