      Book Description

Why did it take more than a century of research before scientists properly understood what DNA was and what it did within the cell? A Century of DNA aims to answer this question, tracing the history of DNA research across interrelated subjects, including embryology, biophysics, organic chemistry, histology, physiological chemistry, and genetics. The chapters follow a chronological sequence in the development of ideas on DNA, and incorporate biographical material on researchers involved in these discoveries. Comprehensible to the general scientific reader and to the specialist, this book is a unique look at the foundations of molecular biology.

5 out of 5 stars The Discovery of DNA.......2000-06-03

I read this book as a part of research on the discovery of DNA. It had more than just good information. The book was written in such a way that it made reading the book interesting. Most books on discoveries tend to be dull. But this book is more like a story, the story of DNA. I would recomend this book to people who are interested in the topic. My favorite part is the foward, it is so true that it is difficult to see the work that led up to major discoveries.

4 out of 5 stars Chromatin Structure and Function:.......2000-01-18

Overall this is a good book, considering the fact that chromatin structure and function is such a broad subject. It is very comprehensive, and I liked that about it. It has a definite bias in favour of chromatin STRUCTURE rather than function. It tends to deal mainly with chromatin at the molecular level rather than at the chromosome level. I would have preferred more information about chromosomes, centromeres, telomeres, and position effects. But the book is certainly not lacking on information about chromatin organization proteins and transcription factors. One drawback for me personally was the way the book was organized. It is not organized into bedtime reading 'bite-sized' CHAPTERS the way I like my books to be. It is instead organized into one long monologue, punctuated only by subsections (subsection 1.2.1.1, subsection 2.1.1.1...etc. as if we don't get enough of that in research papers!). The book tends to be a bit DULL for my taste, but it is certainly a good way to get 'up to speed' in the chromatin field. Greg Doheny (Vancouver B.C.)

5 out of 5 stars well written and up to date.......1999-03-29

In a fast-moving field such as chromatin structure and function, one is usually better off reading journal articles than trying to gain a background by reading a text. This is not the case with Dr. Wolffe's book, Chromatin: Structure and Function. The book covers the background and then forges into new and interesting data.

I was required to buy this book for a class, and was originally resentful of the cost, but now I keep it in lab and find myself consulting it every once in a while. The explanations are clear, the diagrammes informative, and the science is good.

5 out of 5 stars The bible for anyone interested in nucleic acid structure.......2002-01-17

I never took a formal class in nucleic acid stucture, but I do research in this field. Its a great book and very easy to understand. You can teach yourself the subject without the aid of a professor. The author carefully reviews each topic and describes critical experiments that lead up to the present knowledge. The language is not too technical but the author introduces jargon where appropriate. I would recommend this book to anyone doing research in nucleic acids or anyone taking a course in nucleic acid structure. Its a very well written and informative book. Don't miss out!

5 out of 5 stars Well Written, Extremely Informative & Useful.......2003-05-29

I'm a graduate student who needed a current refresher in the mechanisms of gene transcription, but reading through dozens of literature articles often leaves one with a fragmented picture of what is really happening.

Mechanisms of Gene Expression gives the full picture (current to 1999, of course) of gene transcription, taken from recent literature articles, and compressed into a very well written book on the subject. It frequently uses PDB structures to explain structural significances (including references) and other images and experimental results to both illustrate the mechanisms being discussed and show the reader how such experimental techniques are used to obtain results. (Although, the book focuses on the summarized results and not the technical means of the "how").

Mechanisms of Gene Expression would be great for any undergraduate or grad interested in molecular genetics or gene expression. The book covers much more than traditional molecular genetics textbooks while still retaining readability. It differentiates between facts that are well known and still controversial or only partially known with the corresponding references included at all times.

Overall, a very impressive book that contains a lot of knowledge from many sources in the literature. Even with the library so close, I might still buy it.

            Book Description

The peroxiredoxins represent an important emerging family of sulfhydryl-linked antioxidant proteins, apparently ubiquitously present in all known organisms. The antioxidant function of the peroxiredoxins complements that of other enzymic and non-enzymic systems within the cell. In addition, there is increasing evidence that the peroxiredoxins play a role in cell signalling, by controlling and/or sensing hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite levels.

In this, the first book containing a broad survey on the peroxiredoxins, the editors succeeded to involve almost all groups that contributed significant insights into the emerging field. The diverse biological roles of the new protein family are discussed in the context of other antioxidant systems like those based on heme or selenium catalysis. Finally, related future perspectives, which range from antimicrobial therapy up to the understanding of human development and carcinogenesis, are highlighted. Specifically, the book will be of outstanding interest to researchers who want to understand how micro-organisms, plants and animals cope with oxidative stress and how such stress is recognized and linked to adaptive responses via redox regulation of cellular processes.

The applets on this is just great for understanding many physics concepts. It covers most topics (mechanics, waves, electrostatics, magnetism etc), it has interactive menus so you can change the parameters in the experiments and it logs the output and plots them for you.

Highly recommended for any high school student and even university students. An excellent teaching and learning tool. I highly recommend it to my students since it moves abstract concepts closer to the concrete stage.

If you are a parent, this is a MUST have for your child to aid their learning of physics concepts.

The downside is some of the applets do not work but they are a small minority. Note you need to enable the java function on your browser, just go to Sun Microsystems website, it should work.

5 out of 5 stars one of those books you can't put down.......2006-11-21

I picked this book up in the library one day because it reminded me of The Last of the Mohicans and ended up getting sucked in (and liking it much more than LOTM). I found the characters humanly flawed and lovable and their lives very interesting. Although some might find the relentless action tiring, I thought it was probably an accurate depiction of the hardships they faced. The fact that parts of the story aren't PC made it seem even more accurate to me (and I say this as someone of Irish heritage- a group that is not spared its discriminations in the book).

I highly recommend reading this book. You might not find it as endearing as I have, but I'm sure there will be something within the story you will like.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - Great author! .......2006-09-15

I am a history buff who happens to also be a woman. Unlike the woman below, I did not find this book to be offensive; I actually thought Gilbert's attitude toward and treatment of his wife Lana was most likely better than the average man who lived at that time in history.

Walter D. Edmonds was an excellent and engaging author; I truly wish there were more like him. He grew up in the Mohawk Valley of New York, the setting of this book, and his knowledge of that area's history cannot be surpassed among people who lived in recent times. I personally thought this book was even better than the Leatherstocking series written by James Fenimore Cooper.

I *highly* recommend this book. I liked it even better than the movie, which starred a very young Henry Fonda.

                      3 out of 5 stars like a miniseries.......2006-02-21

I liked the book. I was looking for a Last of the Mohicans type of book and I found it. Plan to read more like it.

I was suprised that people said it was historically accurate. Have to look into that.

2 out of 5 stars A Hard Book To Like.......2004-06-01

The book is set in New York from the years 1776 to 1784. There's relentless action but after awhile it gets monotonous. The enemy attacks and burns everything, the colonists rebuild as best they can, the enemy comes back and burns everything. In between the menfolk march off for a couple of campaigns. Monotonous though the book is, I suppose this was how life really was back then.

But no matter how much action the book contains, it's hard to enjoy it when you absolutely hate the characters. I'm speaking specifically of the "hero" Gil Martin. I hated him with a passion and kept hoping that he would meet a gruesome end. If I had been his wife Lana I would have killed him long before now.

Bearing in mind the novel was written in the 1930's, don't expect any political correctness. The minorities are written in all their stereotypical splendor ("How!" "Yass'um mas'a") and the women are treated almost as poorly. Once in awhile a character would pop up that I found I could like but they only lasted a couple of pages. Overall I couldn't warm up to this book because of the annoying characters although I was able to develop a respect for the real life colonists and what it must have really been like for them just trying to survive season by season.

                      5 out of 5 stars Interesting and well-written novel.......2003-01-17

This story of the Revolutionary War era settlers in the Mohawk River valley was excellent. Edmonds did considerable historical research and his characters come alive as he tells this tale of the conflict between the Tories who support the King and the farmers who are in favor of the revolt against England.

The story focuses on Gil and Lana Martin, two young settlers who work tirelessly to get a farm established in the valley.

Their hard work is repeatedly destroyed by the Destructives -- Tory and Indian raiders who burn the farms and crops and slaughter anyone who supports the Revolution. The farmer militias strike back at the Tories and their supporters and strike with equal savagery. As in Bosnia and Kosova, the conflict pits neighbor against neighbor.

The novel is about the people of the valley -- both the white settlers and to a lesser degree the Indians -- and their fight to survive in a very hostile environment. I found the story entertaining and I learned quite a bit about the people, the place, and the events that occurred there.

First Page: "GILBERT MARTIN AND WIFE, MAGDELANA (1776) It was the second day of their journey to their first home. Lana, in the cart, looked back to see how her husband was making out with the cow. He had bought it from Domine for a wedding present to her. He had hesitated a long while between the cow and the clock; and she had been disappointed when he finally decided on the cow, even though it cost three dollars more; but now she admitted it would be a fine thing to have a cow to milk. As he said, it would give her companionship when he was working in the woods. Privately she had thought at the time that she would show him that she could manage their first house and help him with the fields also. She was a good strong girl, eighteen years old the day she married, and she thought that if they both worked hard, in a few years they would have money enough to pay thirteen dollars for the clock if they really wanted it. There were only two cows anyway in Deerfield Settlement, and she might make money with the extra butter. The cow had given a good deal of trouble yesterday, leaving its own village, but today it seemed anxious to keep up with the cart. Lana supposed the land looked strange to the poor beast, and that now the cart with the small brown mare were the only things it felt at home with. Gilbert smiled whem she looked back, and raised the hand in which he carried the birch switch. He had taken off his jacket, for the weather was warm, and his shirt was open at the neck. She thought, "He's handsome," and waved back cheerfully....."
