Book Description
Rajni Hatti-Kaul and her expert coauthors combine theory, methodology, and applications in a practical collection of easily reproducible protocols for bioseparations in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS). The protocols range from established methods to cutting-edge techniques with potential biotechnological applications. Among the methods detailed are those for ATPS preparation and characterization, for partitioning applied to soluble molecules and particulates (including whole cells, membranes, and organelles), and for the isolation and purification of proteins-including a glimpse of large-scale handling of two-phase separations. Practical and informative, with its detailed guidelines allowing researchers to adapt specific systems to their own separation needs, Aqueous Two-Phase Systems: Methods and Protocols demonstrates the scope and utility of two-phase aqueous systems in both basic and applied research.

Description:
Based on the 2-propanol-salt-H"2O system, a new and simple pretreatment method was developed for the analysis of testosterone and epitestosterone in human urine coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The influence factors on partition behaviors of the steroids were studied including the type and amount of salts, the volume of 2-propanol, the concentration of the analytes, and temperature. When K"3PO"4, K"2HPO"4, K"2CO"3 and KOH were chosen as phase separation salts, the enrichment factors were 12, 10, 12 and 13, respectively, and the extraction efficiencies for testosterone and epitestosterone were all 80-90%. In the optimal system of 2-propanol-K"3PO"4-H"2O, the recoveries of the spiked standards for the analytes were all 92-102% with relative standard deviation of 2.3-7.2%. Combined with a HPLC method, this extraction technique has been successfully applied to the analysis of testosterone and epitestosterone in human urine with the detection limits of 1ng/ml and the linear ranges of 10-500ng/ml for both compounds. Compared with conventional liquid-liquid extraction or solid-phase extraction, this novel method is much simpler and more environmentally friendly due to the direct injection of the upper phase into HPLC system, no use of harmful organic solvent, and low consumption of extractant.

Book Description
Lewis Carroll Epstein explains deep ideas in physics in an easy-to-understand way. Thinking Physics is a perfect beginner’s guide to an amazingly wide range of physics-related questions. The book targets topics that science teachers and students spend time wondering about, like wing lift. Epstein elucidates the familiar but misunderstood — such as how tides work — along with more obscure but fascinating phenomena like the “Bernoulli sub” and the “artificial aurora” created by hydrogen bombs. Broken into many short sections and peppered with Epstein’s own playful hand-drawn illustrations, the book does not simply give the right answer: It also goes into the answers that seem right but are wrong and shows why they are wrong — a rarity in science books. Thinking Physics is a rigorously correct, lighthearted, and cleverly designed Q and A book for physicists of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
A must for every teacher.......2007-07-16
Simple, but non trivial, conceptual problems with clear, insightful, elegant solutions without math. For everyday use to challenge students' minds.
Really makes you think........2007-01-10
Think you know physics? The simple questions posed in this book will show you if you do. It is approachable enough for a lay person to pick it up and take a crack at it. The solutions give great insight for the seasoned physicists and newbies.
Elegant, brilliant answers.......2005-09-16
Epstein presents a bunch of physics problems, and solves them all -- almost without any math -- with clear, insightful, elegant solutions. A brilliant book useful from grade 10 to grad school.
Very Useful Book.......2004-05-14
No, this isn't a perfect book. Some of Lewis' explanations are a bit vague and some are incomplete but despite these minor flaws this book does a wonderful job of explaining important concepts of physics in very simple terms.
I can't think of anyone who wouldn't benefit from reading this book. Oh yes, it's a fun read too!
teachs you how to think about physics problems.......2003-12-03
I like this book because it has interesting and motivating physics problems that can be solved without math, but with just carefull thinking on the truly physical aspects and principles. I do not mean that math should not be used in physics books, nor that all physics problems can be solved without math, but problems that do not need math are also very interesting and should be taught; this book is very good in doing that. I think this book would be very useful in high school (as complement to conventional books) because it would have great effect on kids's mental habits and rational thinking.
I am sure that if you are not a professional physicist but you like physics, like me, you will enjoy with this book. The only one thing I do not like from this book is that answers are written upside down. It deserves 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful story!.......2004-03-25
Originally published in the U.S. as "Blow the Wind Southerly". This is very hard to find, but worth the search. Charlotte Fairlie was proud of her position as headmistress of Saint Elizabeth's-even if it meant a lonely life for someone so young and attractive. School intrigues and petty jealousies made it imperative that she not play favorites, and forced her to remain aloof...and alone! Then she decides to accept a student's invitation to visit her on a beautiful island off the coast of Scotland, and Charlotte finds herself falling in love with a handsome laird. But an ancient legend and a living girl become obstacles to an idyllic romance. Believable and an easy read.
Book Description
One of Melville’s earliest writings, The Enchanted Isles is a hauntingly beautiful descriptive work inspired by a tour of the Galapagos Islands. Originally penned as a travelogue, Melville’s writings form a series of evocative sketches of each of the Galapagos Islands. Recounting their myths and legends, he conjures up the spirit of each in astonishing detail. Read together, they create a timeless classic, perfectly capturing the islands’ eternal charm and mystery.
Customer Reviews:
Melville's Inferno.......2003-09-27
15 years ago I read all of Melville's novels and most of his other prose, but I must have missed this one. So along comes this handsome edition of the sketches and narratives about the Encantadas (Darwin's Galapagos)- and not an early work, but written after Moby Dick - which in less than a hundred pages shows once again what an astounding writer Melville is. The four pages devoted to the island's tortoises are as good as any he wrote about whales. A sample: "That these tortoises are the victims of a penal, or malignant, or perhaps a downright diabolical enchanter, seems in nothing more likely than in that strange infatuation of hopeless toil which so often possesses them. I have known them in their journeyings ram themselves heroically against rocks, and long abide there, nudging, wriggling, wedging, in order to displace them, and so hold on their inflexible path. Their crowning curse is their drudging impulse to straightforwardness in a belittered world." Of the actual narratives, the most anthologized is the story about the Chola Widow, which is heartbreaking, but even more so when read in the context of the whole suite of pieces. If you think you won't like Melville, try this book; and if you do like Melville, don't miss it.

Book Description
In Thompson's latest book, Lions in the New Land: The Epic Adventures of Friar Nicholas in The Enchanted Isles, he shares the story of a mysterious English friar whose passage through time altered the course of world history. In the 14th century, the friar traveled from England, to Norway, Iceland, and the Northern Regions in the service of King Edward III. The friar's assignment was to survey isles of the North Atlantic in an effort to find the lost, overseas colony of King Arthur. This project, entailing discovery of the Western Hemisphere, was first proposed by England's premier scientistRoger Bacon in 1266.
We now have evidence in the form of a map and a manuscript, the Inventio Fortunatae, confirming that English Franciscans traveled to the New World at the very dawn of the Age of Discovery. At this point in time, the "New Land" was claimed as a sovereign realm under the aegis of King Magnus Erikssonruler of both Norway and Sweden. It is also clear that the Friar's Map played a crucial role in early Portuguese and Spanish navigation.
The manuscript reached the hands of Portugal's Prince Henry The Navigator who was the grandson of the English regent John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and son of Edward III. The Inventio Fortunatae was also known to Bristol merchants who sailed to Newfoundland in the 1480's, and it was known to Columbus who reviewed the book prior to his Arctic voyage in 1477 and his Venezuelan voyage in 1498. A map of Arctic regions attributed to the friar appeared in the works of such renowned geographers as Martin Behaim, John Ruysch, Ortelius, and Mercator.
Thus, it can be demonstrated with great assurance and pride that the English people deserve the lion's share of credit for early New World discovery.
