Book Description
Hardbound. This volume is the proceedings of the first in a series of meetings based on the Restoration Medical Engineering Program. The first meeting was an overview of the results of a project related to tissue engineering for organ regeneration. Functional failure of a main organ introduces death to life. Insufficiency of the sensory organs critically disturbs the quality of life. Much research has been focused on how to support the insufficient organs using biotechnological approaches. Partially successful in this theme is the mechanical support for respiratory insufficiency or the dialysis system for renal failure. Liver failure or pancreatic insufficiency could not be overcome by traditional bioengineering due to their complicated function. Organ transplantation solves this kind of problem, however, another big problem is the shortage of donor organs, and also the continuous medication for immunosuppression. Considering these factors the purpose of

There's substitute........2007-09-27
Put it briefly, if you are picked with this as textbook, then you have no choice; otherwise you have plenty of choices, like some $10 Dover classics. For physical insight I particularly recommend Feynmann's lectures, though it's less systematic, more casual. This one is good, of course, easy going and cristal clear, but sucks a lot of money. A Webster's dictionary has more than ten times content, but sells for one-tenth of price, that makes about 100 times price difference for each individual word. Scary?
Logical development with plenty of exercises.......2005-07-06
A very logical introduction to EM.
The author starts only with the conservation of electrical charge and coloumbs law and using basic vector calculus concepts of field and divergence along with stokes theorem he derives maxwells first equation( diff form of gauss law ).
He then uses concepts of line integral, potential and gradient and goes on to show how the conservative nature of the electrical force translates to path independence of work done in a static electric field and derives the static version of maxwells second equation.
He takes an important look at applied theory especially in current analysis detailing the concept of resistance and basic series and parallel circuit analysis and how they directly derive from conservation of electric charge and conservative nature of the electrical force.
A nice introduction to magnetism is completed by showing that it is a relativitic effect of electricity and defines the magnetic force accordingly. He then shows that unlike electricity the net flux of the magnetic field is zero and expresses it in differential form ( maxwells third equation ). By now you should know he is going to talk about line integrals as with electricity and shows that this is proportional to the current enclosed by the path ( static version of maxwell equation )
A nice digression on AC currents is explored and he then introduces induction as a prerequisite for modifying maxwells equations.
He then shows that something is wrong with 2 of the equations above by showing that conservation of electric charge ( written in differential form ) leads to a contradiction in the above equations. He then shows how "adding" the term from the induction phenomena completes maxwells equations in a vacuum.
A solution to maxwells equations is found resulting in the electromagnetic wave we hear so much about.
The text concludes with chapters on electric and magnetic fields in matter.
There is also a nice intro to special relativity.
As with any text to gain understanding you must attempt a majority of the problems which range from very easy to interesting.
A definite must for any physics buff.
Classic!.......2005-01-04
A true classic among the textbooks for introductory electricity and magnetism. Yes. This book is highly mathematical. The author takes great effort to present both concepts and mathematical formulations clearly and rigorously. This is a great book for any physics class that emphasizes theory. Many exercise problems are inspiring and practical. The book uses the CGS unit system which is a little odd but it takes little time to get use to.
Great text!.......2004-06-25
I used this text in an 'advanced' introductory physics course and loved it. Explanations are clear and concise, examples and homework problems are of sufficient sophistication to prepare one for challanging exams, and the text limits itself to a thorough study of the more basic concepts of electricity and magnetism. The text is excellent preparation for more advanced study, and probably a good reference for students who need help while pursuing more advanced study.
A Must Have Introductory Text.......2004-02-07
I had the pleasure of using this book for my Honors Electricity and Magnetism class at Cornell. It was my second semester taking physics and I must say I really had a blast with that class, thanks to our professor Richard Galick second semester E&M will be one of my most memorable classes. Do not be misled by my enjoyment of the class, the homework exercises from this book were mostly all VERY CHALLENGING. I really I appreciated that Purcell takes the time in this book to thoroughly explain Physics (not Math which is just a tool used to wok on Physics), and doesn't waste so much time working out through endless formulas that don't get you any where; as our professor used to say "Let the Physics drive the Math, not the other way around".
The only thing I don't like about this book is that it mostly all done in cgs units instead of SI. If you are a Physicist you'll find out how useful (for simplification reasons) this could be but if you are an Electrical Engineer like me it doesn't really help much.

Book Description
1904. A prolific English writer, who published colorful novels set in unknown regions and lost kingdoms of Africa, or some other corner of the world such as Iceland, Constantinople, Mexico, Ancient Egypt. Haggard's best-known work is the romantic adventure tale King Solomon's Mine, which was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. In Ayesha, guided by a vision, an Englishman and his companion search the mountains of Asia for the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian priestess.

It was but a little while afterwards that once more we heard the baying of the death-hounds. Yes, they were heading straight for us, this time across country. Again the white horse and its rider appeared, utterly exhausted, both of them, for the poor beast could scarcely struggle on to the towing-path. As it gained it a great red hound with a black ear gripped its flank, and at the touch of the fangs it screamed aloud in terror as only a horse can. The rider sprang from its back, and, to our horror, ran to the river's edge, thinking evidently to take refuge in our boat. But before ever he reached the water the devilish brutes were upon him.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
Leo has left, and Ayesha, he thinks, is dead. Do immortal antiheros with superpowers stay dead? Only sometimes, would be the answer to that question. This is most definitely not one of those times.
Leo is a pretty hot guy, it seems, as the Queen of Kaloon falls for him, and he is in danger of yet another woman scorned. He now, of course, only wants Ayesha. Mortal types, in the end, can't handle the heat.
very poor edition.......2007-08-16
This review is not for the story, but the printing of this edition is terrible. There are an incredible amount of spelling an punctuation errors that really detract from the book.
Great Book - Poor Print Quality.......2006-11-25
H. Rider Haggard wrote amazing books that are still as deeply compelling today as they were when they were written in the 1900's. "She" and "The Return of She" are two of my favorites. Unfortunately, this publisher does not do justice to this great book. The print quality is extremely poor, particularly ruining the wonderful illustrations by Maurice Greiggenhagen. Anyone interested in this book should order a version by another publisher.
Terrific!.......2001-11-04
Second in the trilogy of "She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed". Still terrific, still imaginative and thrilling. How does Haggard do it? The scenes and images he conjures up. The cliff-hanging(literally), Perils of Pauline adventures just fascinate. And yet again, the battle between the spirit and flesh, the mortality and divinity, of man. In this one, however, it began to slow about two-thirds of the way thru, as if Haggard were stretching at times. But then he roused himself magnificently to a thrilling finish! The scene of Ayesha and her army riding across the plain to save Leo is the stuff of movies. It is no less a book than the first, which is unusual for sequels. This one takes place in Tibet, rather than Libya, and Haggard foresees the importance of radium.
Haggard: a real avant-garde story teller.......2001-01-14
Ayesha is a beautiful and imaginative masterpiece. The radical beauty of this book is not merely that it is a "good" or "bad" sequel of She, but that it is the work of an open-minded writer. The plot is full of super natural and pre "new age" exoticism as well that 19th century romanticism adventures. Its naiveté and simplicity make this book a very enjoyable one. The best moment of the book is a incredible obscure scene in which Ayesha has a meeting with her "servants", shadows and ghosts from beyond and the past. I recommend this book only to real admirers of this kind of pulp-literature and to eclictic readers.
