Organized by functional groups for ready reference and featuring detailed examples of hundreds of reactions, this handbook covers hydrogenations of alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes and ketones, nitriles, imines, nitro and nitroso compounds, carboxylic acids and esters, and aromatic and heterocyclic compounds. In addition, coverage includes the preparation of amines by reductive alkylation and the hydrogenolysis of a variety of compounds. Examples of hydrogenation of functional groups and reaction pathways are illustrated with numerous equations and schemes.
Practitioners will appreciate the plenitude of experimental details given for most of the reactions selected, including amounts of reagents and catalysts, reaction temperatures, hydrogen pressures, and reaction times. They will also find helpful the more than one hundred tables included throughout the book detailing the effects of key factors governing rate and selectivity, such as compound structure, the nature of catalysts and supports, and the nature of solvents. Researchers will benefit from the introductory chapters covering an array of hydrogenation catalysts, including nickel, cobalt, copper, iron, platinum group metals, rhenium, and other oxide and sulfide catalysts, as well as reactors and reaction conditions.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, bit expensive..........2006-09-07
All,
This book is a little bit pricey. That being said it is a must for those of us doing hydrogenations/reductions. The choice of catalyst/solvent/temperature is extremely important. The book provides very good summaries and references if you need more details.
Overall I am very happy with this book, it's one of the few good review books out there.

Product Description
This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A106573. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report presents an overview of the software developed under the common high performance computing software support initiative (CHSSI), computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-6 project. Under the project, a zonal Navier- Stokes flow solver tested and validated via years of productive research at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory was rewritten for scalable parallel performance on both shared memory and distributed memory high performance computers. At the same time, a graphical user interface (GUI) was developed to help the user set up the problem, provide real-time visualization, and execute the solver. The GUI is not just an input interface but provides an environment for the systematic, coherent execution of the solver, thus making it a more useful, quicker and easier application tool for engineers. Also part of the CHSSI project is a demonstration of the developed software on complex applications of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD). Results from computations of 10 brilliant antitank (BAT) submunitions simultaneously ejecting from a single Army tactical missile and a guided multiple launch rocket system missile are discussed. Experimental data were available for comparison with the BAT computations. The CFD computations and the experimental data show good agreement and serve as validation for the accuracy of the solver. The software has been written with large memory requirements and scalability in mind.

HPC comes in all Walks of Life.......2007-08-29
The computational Aspects of General Relativity, by J. Frauendiener, is one of many rather interesting papers one would find in this book. This book covers the 2nd Russian-German Advanced Research Workshop which took place in March of 2005. The papers that were presented cover the applications of High Performance Computing (HPC) in research areas such as Fluid Mechanics and computational Physics. As one would expect, the underlying pattern of the types of problems faced by these area are the same as any other, mainly they must be parallelizable, but the effort taken by various researchers to essentially breakup a given problem is truly remarkable.
Particle methods in powder technology, by B. Henrich, et. al., is another paper which the authors use the HPC methods to simulate compaction, sintering and filling of a dispersed powder. The simulation, as one would expect, uses a molecular dynamics method which in turn follows Newton's equations of motions for simulating the time evolution of particles. As one would expect, the sheer number of simulations that must take place is simply staggering, and an HPC is required to get the job done is a reasonable amount of time.
There are a number of other paper that talk about the applications of HPC in Fluid Dynamics or Mechanics, but I was very interested in H. Brunst, et. al. paper, Parallel applications on large scale systems: getting insights, which the authors talk about the "scalability properties on moderns parallel computer architectures". The authors evaluate BenchIT, which is used for evaluation and presentation of performance data. BenchIT is used to compare difference architectures and programming languages against each other to determine their efficiency and performance numbers. BenchIT can be used for simply estimating what the gain would be if for example one programming language is used over the other given certain scenarios. It is a great tool for ROI (return on investments) calculations.
U. Kuster, et. al. paper, Sustaining performance in future vector processors, is simply fascinating! The authors present current performance numbers from a number of platforms, and tie the performance to the software architecture - which is very much true. Teraflops/sec performance is desired, but the authors argue that with current processor architecture, the only way to achieve such performance numbers one much re-architect the way we tackle the problem from the software architecture perspective. The authors then close the loop with possible improvements to the processor architecture that can aid in making the software design a bit simpler. The goal of this paper is show that software and hardware are more tied together than ever, and in order to "go to the next level", both need to work together instead of dispersed components.
I was very surprised at the quality of the papers that are in this text. As an architect that deals with Grid and HPC systems on daily basis, I found this text very informative and educational.

Book Description
An unflinching portrait of a priest who seduces his landlady's daughter, now an acclaimed and controversial motion picture
Eça de Queirós's novel, The Crime of Father Amaro is a lurid satire of clerical corruption in a town in Portugal (Leira) during the period before and after the 1871 Paris Commune. At the start, a priest physically explodes after a fish supper while guests at a birthday celebration are "wildly dancing a polka." Young Father Amaro (whose name means "bitter" in Portuguese) arrives in Leira and soon lusts afterand is lusted after bybudding Amélia, dewy-lipped, devout daughter of São Joaneira who has taken in Father Amaro as a lodger. What ensues is a secret love affair amidst a host of compelling minor characters: Canon Dias, glutton and São Joaneira's lover; Dona Maria da Assunção, a wealthy widow with a roomful of religious images, agog at any hint of sex; João Eduardo, repressed atheist, free-thinker and suitor to Amélia; Father Brito, "the strongest and most stupid priest in the diocese;" the administrator of the municipal council who spies at a neighbor's wife through binoculars for hours every day. Eça's incisive critique flies like a shattering mirror, jabbing everything from the hypocrisy of a rich and powerful Church, to the provincialism of men and women in Portuguese society of the time, to the ineptness of politics or science as antidotes to the town's ills. What lurks within Eça's narrative is a religion of tolerance, wisdom, and equality nearly forgotten. Margaret Jull Costa has rendered an exquisite translation and provides an informative introduction to a story that truly spans all ages.
