Combining insights from observation, experimentation, and theory, The Origin, Expansion, and Demise of Plant Species offers a broad overview of species as dynamic entities that arise, have unique evolutionary histories, and ultimately go extinct. It begins with a review of species concepts and the exposition of a new concept; it then addresses plant speciation, the expansion of species from their narrow centers of origin, intraspecific differentiation, and contact zones between differentiated population systems. Special attention is given to the breakdown of cohesion among populations by reproductive and spatial barriers. Also, the ecological and genetic properties of small populations and fragmented population systems are discussed with a focus on the role of hybridization in the demise of species. It ends with an exploration of the longevity of species and the tempo of diversification, contrasting different groups of plants in these respects as well as in rates of chromosomal differentiation. This book provides a new synthesis of evolutionary biology and ecology. It examines species from their origins, then follows them through their expansion, differentiation and loss of cohesion, and decline and extinction. The stages in the lives of species are viewed through ecological and genetic theory, and topics typically addressed independently are woven into a continuous fabric. As the first synthetic treatment of the stages through which plant species pass, this book is very useful for botanists, evolutionary biologists, conservation biologists, as well as all curious students of the biological sciences.

Book Description
Bayesian decision theory is known to provide an effective framework for the practical solution of discrete and nonconvex optimization problems. This book is the first to demonstrate that this framework is also well suited for the exploitation of heuristic methods in the solution of such problems, especially those of large scale for which exact optimization approaches can be prohibitively costly. The book covers all aspects ranging from the formal presentation of the Bayesian Approach, to its extension to the Bayesian Heuristic Strategy, and its utilization within the informal, interactive Dynamic Visualization strategy. The developed framework is applied in forecasting, in neural network optimization, and in a large number of discrete and continuous optimization problems. Specific application areas which are discussed include scheduling and visualization problems in chemical engineering, manufacturing process control, and epidemiology. Computational results and comparisons with a broad range of test examples are presented. The software required for implementation of the Bayesian Heuristic Approach is included. Although some knowledge of mathematical statistics is necessary in order to fathom the theoretical aspects of the development, no specialized mathematical knowledge is required to understand the application of the approach or to utilize the software which is provided.
Audience: The book is of interest to both researchers in operations research, systems engineering, and optimization methods, as well as applications specialists concerned with the solution of large scale discrete and/or nonconvex optimization problems in a broad range of engineering and technological fields. It may be used as supplementary material for graduate level courses.

Description:
In this paper, we describe a dynamic programming approach to solve optimally the single-source uncapacitated minimum cost network flow problem with general concave costs. This class of problems is known to be NP-Hard and there is a scarcity of methods to solve them in their full generality. The algorithms previously developed critically depend on the type of cost functions considered and on the number of nonlinear arc costs. Here, a new dynamic programming approach that does not depend on any of these factors is proposed. Computational experiments were performed using randomly generated problems. The computational results reported for small and medium size problems indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Since the standard multi knapsack problem, may be rewritten as a reverse convex problem, we present a global optimization approach. It is known from solving high dimensional nonconvex problems that pure cutting plane methods may fail and branch-and-bound is impractical, due to a large duality gap. On the other hand, a strategy based on some sufficient optimality condition does not help much because it requires generating all level set points, an intractable problem. Therefore, we propose to combine both a cutting plane method and a sufficient optimality condition together with a random generation of level set points where the number of points is limited by a tabu list to prevent re-examination of the same level set area. Experiments show that we end up with a small duality gap allowing a subsequent branch-and-bound approach to prove optimality.

In this paper we present a methodology for a rural and semi-urban data network placement. In order to optimally place the network and to ensure that the network is realistic and viable we address four key issues, namely, the demographic and socio-economic issues, geographical estimation, optimization of the network placement and financial optimization. A digital representation of the map of the region where the network has to be placed is used. A continuous optimization algorithm is applied to optimally place the backbone rings, and a combinatorial optimization algorithm is applied to obtain the optimal rollout order for the network. Mathematical formulations for both the optimization problems are presented. Optimal financial indicators are obtained.
