The Origin, Expansion, and Demise of Plant Species (Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution)
Donald A. Levin Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195127293 |
Book Description
Combining insights from observation, experimentation, and theory, The Origin, Expansion, and Demise of Plant Species offers a broad overview of species as dynamic entities that arise, have unique evolutionary histories, and ultimately go extinct. It begins with a review of species concepts and the exposition of a new concept; it then addresses plant speciation, the expansion of species from their narrow centers of origin, intraspecific differentiation, and contact zones between differentiated population systems. Special attention is given to the breakdown of cohesion among populations by reproductive and spatial barriers. Also, the ecological and genetic properties of small populations and fragmented population systems are discussed with a focus on the role of hybridization in the demise of species. It ends with an exploration of the longevity of species and the tempo of diversification, contrasting different groups of plants in these respects as well as in rates of chromosomal differentiation. This book provides a new synthesis of evolutionary biology and ecology. It examines species from their origins, then follows them through their expansion, differentiation and loss of cohesion, and decline and extinction. The stages in the lives of species are viewed through ecological and genetic theory, and topics typically addressed independently are woven into a continuous fabric. As the first synthetic treatment of the stages through which plant species pass, this book is very useful for botanists, evolutionary biologists, conservation biologists, as well as all curious students of the biological sciences.

Cryobanking the Genetic Resource
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0748408142 |
Book Description
There is a growing awareness of a worldwide reduction in biodiversity and the urgent need to develop ways to redress the problem. This is the first major book devoted to the subject of genetic resource banking (GRB) and its role in preserving global animal biodiversity. In Cryobanking the Genetic Resource, expert contributors provide the non-specialist with an overview of the subject and the practical techniques associated with GRB. The book presents a basic introduction to the concepts, and then points the way to relevant literature for those who wish to develop practical applications. The first section deals with the potential contribution of GRB to biodiversity protection, while the second section offers an introduction to the basic cryobiology of gametes and embryos. In the first section, genetic considerations for planning interventions are discussed, together with disease control measures. This section explores related reproductive technologies necessary for the use of cryopreserved gametes and embryos, as well as a range of other issues such as ownership and security of stored material, and the size and location of cryopreserved material. The second section offers a thorough review of the literature on cryopreservation of spermatozoa, oocytes, and embryos. It gathers species into related groups for ease of reference, and does not assume extensive specialist knowledge so that newcomers to the field can make the best use of the available research. This book is an essential resource for zoologists and conservationists with an interest in genetic management and captive breeding, and also for students involved in biodiversity issues, conservation, and assisted reproduction.

Genetics and the Extinction of Species
Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691009708 |
Book Description
Darwin's Origin of Species and Dobzhansky's Genetics and the Origin of Species have been the cornerstones of modern evolutionary and population genetic theory for the past hundred years, but in the twenty-first century, biologists will face graver problems of extinction. In this collection, a team of leading biologists demonstrates why the burgeoning field of conservation biology must continue to rely on the insights of population genetics if we are to preserve the diversity of living species. Technological and theoretical developments throughout the 1990s have allowed for important new insights into how populations have evolved in response to past selection pressures, while providing a broad new understanding of the genetic structure of natural populations. The authors explore these advances and argue for the applicability of new genetic methods in conservation biology. The volume covers such topics as the reasons for extinctions, the best ways to measure biodiversity, and the benefits and drawbacks of policies like captive breeding. Genetics and the Extinction of Species is a rich source of information for biologists and policymakers who want to learn more about the host of tools, theories, and approaches available for conserving biodiversity.
In addition to the editors, the contributors to the volume are William Amos, Rebecca Cann, Kathryn Rodriguez-Clark, Leslie Douglas, Leonard Freed, Paul Harvey, Kent Holsinger, Russell Lande, and Helen Steers.

Bayesian Heuristic Approach to Discrete and Global Optimization: Algorithms, Visualization, Software, and Applications (Nonconvex Optimization and Its Applications)
J. Mockus , William Eddy , and Gintaras Reklaitis Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792343271 |
Book Description
Bayesian decision theory is known to provide an effective framework for the practical solution of discrete and nonconvex optimization problems. This book is the first to demonstrate that this framework is also well suited for the exploitation of heuristic methods in the solution of such problems, especially those of large scale for which exact optimization approaches can be prohibitively costly. The book covers all aspects ranging from the formal presentation of the Bayesian Approach, to its extension to the Bayesian Heuristic Strategy, and its utilization within the informal, interactive Dynamic Visualization strategy. The developed framework is applied in forecasting, in neural network optimization, and in a large number of discrete and continuous optimization problems. Specific application areas which are discussed include scheduling and visualization problems in chemical engineering, manufacturing process control, and epidemiology. Computational results and comparisons with a broad range of test examples are presented. The software required for implementation of the Bayesian Heuristic Approach is included. Although some knowledge of mathematical statistics is necessary in order to fathom the theoretical aspects of the development, no specialized mathematical knowledge is required to understand the application of the approach or to utilize the software which is provided.
