Book Description
Here is the ultimate explanation of the brain for everyone who thinks: a guide to how the brain works, how our brains came to operate the way they do, and, most important, how to use your precious gray matter to its full capacity. The brain, according to current research, is not some kind of automatic machine that works independently of its user. In fact, the circuitry of the brain actually changes according to how one uses it. Our brains are continuously developing new capacities and refinements—or losing them, depending upon how we use them. Gerald Hüther takes us on a fascinating tour of the brain's development—from one-celled organisms to worms, moles, apes, and on to us humans—showing how we truly are what we think: our behavior directly affects our brain capacity. And the behavior that promotes the fullest development of the brain is behavior that balances emotion and intellect, dependence and autonomy, openness and focus, and ultimately expresses itself in such virtues as truthfulness, considerateness, sincerity, humility, and love. Hüther's user's-manual approach is humorous and engaging, with a minimum of technical language, yet the book's message is profound: the fundamental nature of our brains and nervous systems naturally leads to our continued growth in intelligence and humanity.

The Compassionate Brain.......2007-09-29
I LIKED this book. Perhaps, as some other reviewers suggested, it was not a complex treatment of neurobiology as it relates to our development, and the title could have given the impression the book was other than it was, but nonetheless, The Compassionate Brain progressively outlined the evolution of brain development and gave more than a hint of how we, as a species, tragically fall very short in understanding the true potential of our brains and in reaching that potential. While reading this book, I was constantly reminded of Kathleen Norris' essay "Gatsby on the Plains: The Small Town Death Wish." The small town can be an insular place where the phrase "that's not the way we do things here" is in reality a epitaph for dying communities throughout the American Great Plains. The phrase can also be a metaphor for puny ways of thinking of which the terms narrow-mindedness and being in a rut are emblematic. Yet, this manner of thinking is not solely symptomatic of small towns but also of small minds everywhere -- including big cities and large universities. Huther develops his subject like a musical score, building toward a wonderful crescendo. I am giving copies to each of my children. If you read it, you will understand why I now have compassion for the moles tunneling through my yard.
Last Chapters Worth Reading.......2007-08-12
Most of the book was a rehash of bachelor level psycho babble books. The last 20 pages goes into defeating the alarm mechanisms of the brain. IMHO, it was worth the 11 bucks just for those 20 pages.
Misleading title and cover.......2006-10-17
The title of the book would leave one to believe that it examines and demonstrates the position that compassion and empathy go hand in hand with intelligence. This point was perhaps mentioned once in passing (without support) while the rest of the book tried to describe the evolution of the brain and how certain traumas will inhibit its growth. The title also states that it is a guide to further develop the brain. However, most of the book contains no useful information except for the point that the brain can be further developed by doing new and different activities. This is about the extent of the 'guide'. I was quite disappointed overall and certainly didn't read anything revolutionary or even new.
Dabbler's Delirium.......2006-06-21
I was extremely disappointed by this book. The title and the write-up on the back cover held the promise of a how-to manual to use your brain to its fullest potential. The book reads like a superficial mish-mash of philosophy and neurology, with almost no back-up to its major claims and statements about human behavior or the development of societies. At times it sounds like a new age environmentalist screed, noting that poor use of the brain results in the misuse of natural resources. I was kept waiting until the final pages of the book for the magical how-to promised at the beginning. The secret formula for better brain use: be a better person, preferably an environmentalist. The only information of value is Huther's repeated assertion that your brain physiology will adapt to the way you continually use it, and will reinforce this routine way more and more. This has been said by other's before (see Edward De Bono, Mechanism of Mind).

Book Description
Quantitative Proteomics by Mass Spectrometry, from the Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, is a compendium of cutting-edge protocols for quantitative proteomics, and presents the most significant methods used in the field today. The focus on mass spectrometry (MS) is integral, as MS has, and will continue to be, an essential tool in proteomics for studying complex biological systems and human diseases. This volume, written and compiled by leading quantitative proteomic experts, is an indispensable resource in the search for novel biomarkers.
Quantitative Proteomics by Mass Spectrometry presents several innovative MS quantitative procedures, including a variety of methods for introducing isotopic labels and quantifying post-translational modifications. Some of these methods include growing an organism in isotope-enriched media, performing trypsin proteolysis in the presence of 18O-water, reacting protein samples with isotopically labeled reagents, quantifying relative amount of proteins without the use of any isotopic labels. Attention is also given to state-of-the-art techniques for the characterization of the phosphoproteome and tandem MS for detection of inborn errors of metabolism. Specifically, the procedure for determinations of enzymatic activity could be used for large-scale screening of newborns. The protocols in this volume expand both the breadth and depth of readily available methods for quantitative proteomic researchers using MS.

[Quantitative X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis: Theory and Application].......2000-11-01
Very good. The book goes directly to the issue of what X-ray fluorescence is and its applications. Most books in the field explain lot of techniques and do not treat fluorescence properly. Just to remind, it is one of the most used X-ray techniques in the industry. It was about the time for someone to write a book only about fluorescence.

Description:
The analysis of nonylphenol ethoxylate (A"9PEO"n) surfactants with LC-ESI-MS was investigated in a detailed study of the formation of different types of adducts. Part of the observations was explained by calculating their relative stabilities using molecular dynamics techniques. Strong differences in adduct formation behaviour were found for different oligomers. Beside the common sodium adducts, surfactant dimer adducts [2xA"9PEO"1","2+Na]^+, adducts including a solvent molecule [A"9PEO"1","2+MeOH+Na]^+ and doubly charged adducts [A"9PEO">"1"1+2xNa]^2^+ were found. Molecular dynamics calculations showed that the A"9PEO"n molecule wraps itself around the complexing sodium ion in a way that negative electronic charges on oxygen have optimum electrostatic interaction with this ion. van der Waals interactions between alkyl chains are of less importance for the stability of these adducts. Both [2xA"9PEO"2","5+Na]^+ dimer and [A"9PEO"2","5+Na]^+ monomer adducts turned out to be stable from an energetic point of view with adducts of A"9PEO"5 being more stable than adducts of A"9PEO"2. Only for the monomer adduct the latter is in accordance with experimental observations. Consequences of the formation of several adducts per A"9PEO"n oligomer for the quantitative analysis of environmental samples were evaluated. In clean samples, it was found that the presence of short-chain A"9PEO"1","2 can cause an overestimation of long-chain A"9PEO">"2. In real environmental extracts, other processes like matrix effects have a stronger influence on the quantitative result, and therefore no significant influence of adduct formation processes could be observed. However, inclusion of [A"9PEO"1","2+MeOH+Na]^+ adduct signals does improve the detection limits of the two short-chain oligomers. Correct quantitative results are obtained when A"9PEO"1 and A"9PEO"2 are quantified separately, and longer oligomers with a molar calibration followed by correction of the average molar weight of the A"9PEO">"2 in the sample.

Description:
A single particle mass spectrometer, RSMS-3, and a MOUDI were deployed during the Pittsburgh Air Quality Study (PAQS), July 2001-September 2002, to obtain size resolved measurements of elemental composition for particulate matter (PM) within the Pittsburgh area. Elemental mass distributions from analysis of the MOUDI stages were directly compared to those constructed using the single particle data, in conjunction with coincident SMPS measurements, for specific days within the PAQS. Results from one episode on 27 October 2001 showed that approximately 80% of the metal containing particles detected on this day belonged to the Na/Si/K/Ca/Fe/Ga/Pb particle class. The density and shape factor of these particles were estimated to be 3.9+/-0.8g/cc and 1.5+/-0.2, respectively, and the relative sensitivity factors for individual metals showed little variation with respect to particle diameter over the size range of 70-800nm. Compared to the 27 October 2001 episode, there was a larger degree of variability in the metal containing particles detected during another episode on 14 March 2002. The Ca and Pb mass distributions from this day represent an ensemble of externally mixed particles. Estimates of particle density were provided for the dominant particle types, including EC/OC/Ca, Al/Si/Ca/Fe, EC/OC/Pb and Na/K/Zn/Pb, and estimates of particle shape factor were provided for the EC/OC/Ca and Na/K/Zn/Pb classes. Comparison with the 27 October 2001 Ca and Pb mass distributions revealed that the RSMS data reconstructed the MOUDI mass much better from the Ca/Pb containing particles detected on 14 March 2002 than those observed on 27 October 2001, suggesting that the single particle instrument sensitivity to both Ca and Pb depends on the particle matrix.
