Book Description
The book provides six complete sample examinations which duplicate both the multiple-choice and the free-response (essay) portions of the exam. Covered in this comprehensive book are the three areas specifically addressed on the examination: molecules and cells; genetics and evolution; and organisms and populations. For college- bound high school students.
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this one.......2003-09-08
This book is terrible for reviewing for the AP biology exam. It has little review of the subject, and what review it has is almost worthless. The practice exams are extremely easy, and give fasle confidence for the test. I got a 5 on the 2003 exam, but it certainly was not due to this book.
Another OK prep book.......1999-12-27
I bought this book by winter and read it on the plane in winter break. Although the review was very short, it has 6 sample tests, which are very similar, but somehow easier than the AP exams. I suggest you should get the Cliff Notes is you have a lot of time. Otherwise, this book will be fine.
This book is full of misprints and other errors!.......1999-12-02
I have receieved a 5 on the May, 1999 AP Biology Exam, and one of my aids was this book, which I found to be completely worthless. The book lacks much information with only about the first 75 pages of large print text actually being dedicated to teaching you a whole year's worth of AP Biology! The rest of the book is just sample tests which look unprofessionally made and some questions are ambiguous. I was so frustrated with this book because the many misprints that it contained, I seriously do not recommend anyone who is taking the AP Biology exam to buy this book, instead, buy the Cliff's Notes for AP Biology, that is the best book ever for the exam, after reading that, I completely understood every aspect of Biology.
A good reference source with good tests........1999-05-16
It has an excellent review section and then the tests are full and complete.
Customer Reviews:
Good for questions and answers.......2003-08-04
This book sums up AP Biology in about 75 pages, thats amazing. The practice exams are what counts. Im a student but for teachers this book can be of great use if bought with the CD-ROM. You can install it the media center and have the students take the three practice exams before the real test. It times you and gives you a raw score in the end. Has descriptive answers to all of the questions as well. But as for just a review book-no.
I don't know..........2003-07-29
When I used the AP Biology Review book, I thought it wasn't thorough enough and that it was way too brief. On the other hand, the practice questions were excellent. So to buy or not to buy? That's for you to decide...let's just say I passed. Maybe it was because of other causes, but I got to say, the book did help refresh my memory on a few things.
mostly practice tests.......2002-09-24
This gives a sketchy review of major topics with a lot of practice tests. Cliff's gives a more extensive detailed review and Princeton gives a good last minute overview of major points. The only redeeming quality is it is a source for questions when I write an AP Bio test for my class.
Ed Thompson AP Bio teacher (8 yrs.)
This book definitely helped me get a 5 on my AP test........2000-04-02
This book was great. I followed the schedule they provided in the book to study for the test and my score came out wonderful. Getting a 5 on an AP test is very difficult but this book will help out.

Book Description
This book is mainly concerned with finite element methods for time-dependent partial differential equations when the grids are allowed to move in time, but also describes grid generation techniques which include grid adjustment. The mechanism for grid movement derives from a generalization of the residual minimization technique which is familiar from the Galerkin finite element method. The book brings together most of the work done over the last decade or so which has been stimulated by Miller's original idea, and discusses the interrelationships between the techniques of the method and the established ideas of the method of characteristics, Hamilton's equations, the Legendre transformation, and grid equidistribution. The book highlights the issues involved and should provide the reader with a clear view of the current state of the subject and prompt further research.

Spectral Methods: Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics (Scientific Computation)
ASIN: 1852339888 |
Book Description
The discontinuous finite element method (also known as the discontinuous Galerkin method) embodies the advantages of both finite element and finite difference methods. It can be used in convection-dominant applications while maintaining geometric flexibility and higher local approximations throught the use of higher-order elements. Element-by element connection propagates the effect of boundary conditions and the local formulation obviates the need for global matrix assembly. All of this adds up to a method which is not unduly memory-intensive and uniquely useful for working with computational dynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow calculations. Discontinuous Finite Elements in Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer offers its readers a systematic and practical introduction to the discontinuous finite element method. It moves from a brief review of the fundamental laws and equations governing thermal and fluid systems, through a discussion of different approaches to the formulation of discontinuous finite element solutions for boundary and initial value problems, to their applicaton in a variety of thermal-system and fluid-related problems, including: heat conduction problems; convection-dominant problems; compressible and incompressible flows; external radiation problems; internal radiation and radiative transfer; free- and moving-boundary problems; micro- and nanoscale heat transfer and fluid flow; thermal fluid flow under the influence of applied magnetic fields. Mesh generation and adaptivity, parellelization algorithms and a priori and a posteriori error analysis are also introduced and explained, rounding out a comprehensive review of the subject. Each chapter features worked examples and exercises illustrating situations ranging from simple benchmarks to practical engineering questions. This textbook is written to form the foundations of senior undergraduate and graduate learning and also provides scientists, applied mathematicians and research engineers with a thorough treatment of basic concepts, specific techniques and methods for the use of discontinuous Galerkin methods in computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer applications.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A112093. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: As part of a joint AFRL/DAGSI turbine blade research effort, a computer program has been developed that uses a von Karman large-deflection two- dimensional finite element approximation to determine stress levels and patterns in isotropic thin plates. The dynamic loading of various plates has been carried out in order to model a high cycle fatigue situation. The research considered the various effects of mode shapes, resident frequency, non-linear cyclic effect, endurance limits, and stress variations within a high cycle fatigue environment. Two main initiatives were taken. First, a transient analysis tool was developed that calculates stress and displacement patterns over a period of time. This analysis also included the effects of damping. The second initiative developed a tool to calculate the cigenvalues (natural frequencies) and eigenvectors of a plate with a given geometry. The results indicated that it is possible to model fatigue at high frequencies using FE analysis and compare these findings with experimentation incorporating a shaker table. In this research, different geometries of plates were investigated to represent turbine blade configurations. One square plate and three trapezoidal plates were investigated. It was found that a linear relationship could be found between the loading amplitude and the resulting maximum stress. This relationship allows for the prediction of the needed loading amplitude to cause high cycle fatigue.

An Introduction to Meshfree Methods and Their Programming
-
Meshfree Particle Methods
ASIN: 0849312388 |
Book Description
As we attempt to solve engineering problems of ever increasing complexity, so must we develop and learn new methods for doing so. The Finite Difference Method used for centuries eventually gave way to Finite Element Methods (FEM), which better met the demands for flexibility, effectiveness, and accuracy in problems involving complex geometry. Now, however, the limitations of FEM are becoming increasingly evident, and a new and more powerful class of techniques is emerging. For the first time in book form, Mesh Free Methods: Moving Beyond the Finite Element Method provides full, step-by-step details of techniques that can handle very effectively a variety of mechanics problems. The author systematically explores and establishes the theories, principles, and procedures that lead to mesh free methods. He shows that meshless methods not only accommodate complex problems in the mechanics of solids, structures, and fluids, but they do so with a significant reduction in pre-processing time. While they are not yet fully mature, mesh free methods promise to revolutionize engineering analysis. Filled with the new and unpublished results of the author's award-winning research team, this book is your key to unlocking the potential of these techniques, implementing them to solve real-world problems, and contributing to further advancements.
Customer Reviews:
I am still being benefited a lot from this book........2007-06-06
As a fun of meshless methods, I studied in quite detail if the book during my research work. The book has a big volume, it is plainly written in a very clear way, carefully organized and hence is very easy to follow and understand. The author should be credit for this remarkable job. In my opinion, this book stands out in the following aspects compared with other publications. 1) it has a comprehensive coverage on almost all major meshless methods including, EFG, MLPF, BNM, as well as the coupled methods. In addition, many of these methods have been compared with each other via numerical examples with detailed discussions and remarks, which helped me a lot to understand the difference of these techniques. 2) A wide range of applications have been provided in this book, including beams, solids, shell, fluids, etc. 3) Many well developed numerical implementation techniques are also provided with detailed examination on the their properties.
In my view, this book is a single volume that covers major necessary materials related to meshless methods and techniques for readers to begin with. It provides a good starting platform for readers to develop their own meshless techniques and apply meshless methods to their own research areas. For beginners especially students, you can find almost all the relevant materials required for the research of meshless methods. I am still being benefited a lot from this book. It is, in fact, one of the very few books always standing on my desk.
Some meshless techniques like the enrichment techniques are not included in detail in the book. Hope these techniques can be included in the next edition. In addition, the new developments in the meshless techniques should be added.
A quite good book .......2007-06-04
It is a quite good book for a beginner like me. I knew little about meshfree methods, and started to learn about them two years ago. I was lucky that I found this book. It really helped me a lot in the process of learning these new (to me) methods. My English is poor but I found this book is very easy to read: much easier than other English books that I read before. It is very well organized with details on theories, fundamentals and applications. Also, this book describes many meshfree methods and techniques, not just the ones developed by the author. It covers also many problems (solids, beams, plates, shells, and fluids). This helped me in understanding many papers in there areas. I found also that the large numbers of example problems, figures, tables were extremely useful in working out my own codes and problems. I have to say thanks to the author on all these carefully prepared examples. As my background is basically engineering, and I found the mathematical descriptions are easy to follow, which helps me also in working out my own codes. I truly appreciate very much for the author's valuable efforts in writing this book. Without it, I would have to spend a lot more time in figuring out all the methods, techniques, procedures and even terminologies. My sincere thanks again to the author. The author did a very good job in helping out a beginner like me. I appreciate it. It would be however even better, if the source codes (Fortran or C++) were provided. This is the only one suggestion that I have for the author.
Absolutely catastrophic.......2006-06-19
This book is a single giant catastrophe.
The authors are in a terrible command of English. Virtually on every page there are at least several typing errors and formulations that strike you as being copied from a beginners' learning book of the English language which makes reading this book a torture. Scientifically, the authors have mainly collected material from several sources and jotted it down from cover to cover. There are many repetitions and identical phrases throughout the book that strike you as if different parts of the manuscript ware copy-pasted together and then mixed up a bit. The authors have definitely no good training in Mathematics. The delta function is displayed incorrecly in the derivation of the shape functions in chapter 3 and there are so many formal and mathematical inaccuracies in the book that it really starts to bother. Even worse, the authors have the strong tendency to virtually only cite themselves. When looking at the references mentioned in the text, they almost always read "Liu and Liu", "Liu and Liu". You get the impression that the authors have developed if not all then most of the whole field of SPH themselves alone. This constant self-citing is kept throughout the whole book and is very annoying. In addition, the coding examples at the end of the book are written in Fortran. Now, from a state-of-the art book on SPH I would have expected more sophisticated coding (C, C++, JAVA, other object oriented languages) than Fortran. Nowadays, probably nobody who is properly professionally trained in computer science would start writing scientific code in Fortran.
This book strikes me as an example of a book that was very sloppily written in extremely bad English just for the authors to be able to claim to have been the first ones who wrote a book on the SPH method. I do not reccomend it at all.

Description:
A two-dimensional time dependent coupled free-boundary numerical model for tidally-induced flow and transport through the dike of a confined disposal facility (CDF) for contaminated sediments is presented in this paper. The model simulations demonstrate the major effect that tidal fluctuations have on the dynamics of the discharge flux. Sensitivity analyses demonstrate that tidal fluctuation hastens the rate of plume migration near the exit face because of the relatively high advective and dispersive fluxes induced by tides. With or without tides, the rate of contaminant migration increases with higher CDF area hydraulic gradient.

With its excellent line-for-line English translation on facing pages, this handy dual-language volume allows students of German language and literature an ideal way to read the 1922 classic based on events from the life of Buddha. The restless young Brahmin Siddhartha undertakes a spiritual journey that takes him from years of asceticism to long-sought enlightenment.
Customer Reviews:
Lucid and readable........2007-08-29
I admit from the start I am not one of those beings spiritual or intellectual or artistical or fantastical or...etc. So this book does not inspire me like it has done to so many and doubtless many more to come. My intellect unelevatable and my insight reaches few things beyond material. Poor me! So you know this is not the book for me if not for the sake of learning German.
That said I'll now talk about its merits as a language learning aid. Among many Dover dual-language books in German, this is among the most readable, from my personal experience! You should mingle with these books after you reading skill is already OK or a little more. But Beaware: Greman is real tough, German writer tougher, and still toughest are those immortal names in German literature. And it's exactly these formidable guys featured in this Dover series. In fact this is the first book I manage to go cover to cover with little reference to translation. It's no easy, as is not to be expected of any original work by a German writer with a name. I refrain from making further with regard to linguistics or literature comments (look like German?), which I don't qualify. Just for those language learners of similar stage, if you want that sense of achievement or pride
of finishing an original work on your own (to go along with improve reading skill), then this is a good starting place.
