                        Description:
Carbon-coated microstructures have been prepared via carbonization of polymers, which have been deposited onto microstructured wafers. The amount of carbon deposited depends on the composition of the precursor monomer solution and on the presence of a template. The activity of the wafers after impregnation with ruthenium in the hydrogenation of acrolein is, among others, affected by the composition of the polymers and the time of the calcination step. Most likely, the number of functional groups at the carbon surface as well as the porosity are responsible for this behavior. The selectivity pattern in the hydrogenation of acrolein is similar to that of the acrolein hydrogenation using conventional Ru/C catalysts in a fixed-bed reactor.

                          Description:
This study is to inspect how the variation of molecular structures and functional groups present in our model azo dyes (i.e., Congo red, Eriochrome black T (EBT), methyl orange, and methyl red) affects biodecolorization capability of Pseudomonas luteola. The most viable decolorization was found at pH 7-9 and the optimal cellular age for the most effective decolorization was 7 days after static incubation in dye-free cultures. In decolorization, the maximal absorption wavelength in UV-vis spectra for the different dye-containing cultures shifted from visible light range towards the ultraviolet visible range. Methyl red was not decolorized in contrast to methyl orange, Congo red, and Eriochrome black T. The sulfonic group para to azo bond (?N?N?) in methyl orange was a strong electron-withdrawing group through resonance to cause an enhancement of color removal to be easily biodecolorized. As a charged carboxyl group on methyl red is at ortho position (i.e., in the proximity) to azo bond, this led to a complete inhibition to decolorization. However, decolorization of Congo red and EBT in the absence of charged group (e.g., hydroxy or amino group) near azo bond was not completely repressed like methyl red. Thus, the presence of electron-withdrawing groups as the substituents on azo dyes enhanced decolorization capability for biodegradability. In addition, Monod kinetic model provided better predictions to all dye decolorization at initial short periods of time due to negligible intermediate formed at initial short time duration, but significant intermediate accumulation took place at longer period of time. In contrast, the decolorization performances of methyl orange at 400ppm and EBT at 230ppm were significantly less than those predicted from the Monod kinetic model likely due to accumulated intermediates exceeding the threshold levels for feedback inhibition.

                            Description:
A mixing model in a microreactor was developed by using the principle of lamination segments. For four types of multiple reactions, the effects of lamination width and rate constants on the relation between the conversion of reactant and the yield of desired product were investigated by using CFD simulations. The simulation reveals that the lamination width greatly affects the yield for the desired product. In most cases, when the conversion of the reactant is the same, the yield of the desired product for perfect mixing is higher when reactants are fed with lamination segments. An exception is that the rate constant of the reaction producing the desired product is much smaller than that consuming the desired product, and the order of the former reaction is less than the latter. In this case, the feed with large lamination width shows higher yield of the desired product than the feed with perfectly mixed. In this study, the maximum lamination width which shows almost the same performance as the case of perfect mixing was derived for various multiple reactions and reaction conditions. The results provide effective information for the design of microreactors and of the measurement system of rate constants of multiple reactions.

                              Description:
Continuous endeavors are going on in many research works to find out the strategy to mathematically model and optimize complex reaction networks in order to maximize the main product and at the same time keeping the reactor dimensions within some acceptable limits. The aim of this work is to provide with a strategy for efficient modeling and optimization of reaction networks for reaction controlled processes. Genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for optimizing complex search spaces with multiple optima. Formation of styrene monomer from the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation, with several by-products in a fixed bed reactor, is taken as an example for this study. Two activation energies are found to be the best in term of maximizing styrene productivity.

                                Description:
The paper considers the model system of exothermic catalytic selective and complete conversion reactions, occurring according to the scheme A+m[B]@?C+[.], C+[B]@?D+[.], B+[.]@?[B], where A and B initial reagents, C desired product (of selective conversion), D undesirable by-product (of complete conversion), [B] reagent B, chemisorbed at the catalyst surface, [.] vacant catalyst active site. Numerical simulation of the system behavior in fixed adiabatic catalyst bed showed that being compared to steady-state regimes it is possible to significantly improve the desired product yield and catalyst unit productivity by application of nonstationary regimes, based on periodical, separated in time, feeding of reagents A and B. The most interesting results were obtained for process performance in ''reversed heat wave'' mode, when temperature front of reaction is moving upstream the flow of the reaction mixture. Such operation regime is characterized with significant decrease of maximum catalyst temperature, therefore, expanded possibility to increase inlet concentration of reagents and with increased selectivity of conversion into target products.

During the last decade the broad field of `Discretization Methods in Structural Mechanics' has experienced a remarkable evolution. New aspects have come into focus. Many of them were stimulated by challenging requirements coming from high-tech applications. In these proceedings such recent developments are presented and discussed together with new trends and demands. In view of their relevance, emphasis was put on nonlinear finite element methods and boundary element methods as well as on the coupling of these two numerical methods. Novel developments in other discretization methods having the potential of opening new avenues for promising applications were also considered. The different sources of nonlinearities, such as large deformations, large strains, nonlinear material behaviour (including viscoplasticity, progressive damage, nonlinearities in composites and other microstructured materials), contact with or without friction, etc., require (a) a careful mathematical and mechanical description and modelling, (b) the development of efficient algorithms and (c) a sound computational treatment. Contributions meeting these requirements are presented. Further emphasis was laid on significant improvements concerning efficiency, accuracy and reliability of discretization methods in nonlinear structural mechanics (e.g. error estimation, self-adapting mesh refinement, multigrid methods). A number of papers deal with new aspects of sensitivity analysis and optimization. Neural network strategies as well as modern data processing architectures (such as parallel computers and transputers) and their impact on the developments of new algorithmic concepts are discussed.

                                      Book Description

In this entrancing story of spiritual adventure, a Westerner in Peking seeks the mystery at the heart of the Forbidden City. He takes as a tutor in Chinese the young Belgian René Leys, who claims to be in the know about strange goings-on in the Imperial Palace: love affairs, family quarrels, conspiracies that threaten the very existence of the empire. But whether truth-teller or trickster, the elusive and ever-charming René presents his increasingly dazzled disciple with a visionary glimpse of "an essential palace built upon the most magnificent foundations."

5 out of 5 stars The Impenetrability of the Forbidden City.......2006-01-20

It is 1911. After thousands of years, the rule of the Chinese emperors is about to come to an end. It is the Beijing of Bernardo Bertolucci's THE LAST EMPEROR. The 5-year-old Pu-Yi is emperor; and political power is in the hands of a Regent.

A character named Victor Segalen engages two tutors in the Chinese language. One is Chinese; the other is a 17-year-old Belgian by the name of René Leys who has a certain facility for languages. The narrator, Victor, wishes to penetrate into the heart of the Forbidden City at the heart of the capital. He wishes to "know" China in every way, including the Biblical sense of the world.

The very first words of Segalen's disturbing novel are, "I shall know no more, then. Well, I shall not insist; I shall retire from the field ... respectfully, let it be said, and of course backwards, since court etiquette will have it so, and since it is a question of the Imperial Palace, and of an audience that was never granted, and that never will be granted..."

After this initial admission of failure, the book goes back earlier in the same year, as Victor falls more and more under the spell of René. It seems that the Belgian youth has achieved everything that Victor wants. He is a member of the palace's Secret Police; the Regent grants him a young concubine in the palace; he has even won to the heart and bed of the Dowager Empress (not the same one that contributed to the Boxer Rebellion, who was by now dead). The novel grows ever more feverish as young René appears to be more tightly wrapped up in the life of the Forbidden City even as Victor grows more dispirited about his own efforts.

Or is he? This question is at the heart of Segalen's novel. The story grows ever more feverish as Victor's desires to be admitted to the Celestial Presence are foiled, even as René ascends ever higher in the Imperial hierarchy.

I am reminded of a scene in Franz Kafka's THE TRIAL, in which a young man awaits his whole life to be admitted to the law, but the gatekeepers ever refuse him admission. Finally, as he is about to die, the man asks the gatekeeper why no one else in all the years had sought admission at that gate, whereupon the answer is, "No one but you could gain admittance through this door, since this door was intended for you. I am now going to shut it."

Many readers of this book will end up puzzled or frustrated, because Segalen does not choose to wrap the story up neatly. The desire he has to become part of what seems so patently unknowable gives rise to a nightmarish atmosphere and a growing sense of unreality that reaches a climax at the end of the novel.

I for one was enthralled the whole way through. So what if RENE LEYS is a mystery wrapped inside an enigma (which also pretty much describes its author's life). This little-known novel is just another excellent offering of the fledgeling NYRB imprint whose offerings are occupying ever so much more of my reading time.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to admire, difficult to enjoy.......2003-07-30

Victor Segalen had one of the most mysterious life stories of any writer in the last one hundred and fifty years, and would make the fine subject for a biography someday (especially considering his still unexplained death in the forest of Brittany). The novel for which he is best remembered, RENE LEYS, admirably anticipates the sophistication of such modernist novels as Ford's THE GOOD SOLDIER and such "nouvelles romans" as Robbe-Grillet's JEALOUSY in its narrative uncertainty and epistemological uncertainties. Unfortunately, its not a terribly interesting novel, especially given that the multiple forewords to this beuaitful NYRB edition give us so little background as top the history and gossip behind the events of the novel: I have even taken coursework in college on the final days of the Manchu Dynasty and barely could follow the novel's course of events. This is a work that requires much more detailed editorial apparatus in future editions if it is to be more fully enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Cultural and sexual initiation........2002-11-27

A young man succeeds in what he always dreamed of: slip into China's forbidden city and participate in the power plots inside it. He becomes head of the emperor's secret service and lover of the empress. A thriller with a surprising end.
A fascinating novel about the mysterious Chinese power circle around the reigning emperor.
                                      A masterpiece.
I also recommend a French novel with the same themes: 'La Vallée des Roses' by Lucien Bodard.
