Book Description
The protection mode of most available vaccines is based on antibody responses. Since efficient immune responses to many pathogens rely on activating all arms of the immune system, traditional vaccine development does not provide efficient protection against many diseases. Novel vaccination strategies need to allow presentation of antigens that activate the full array of the immune response in the right composition and should prevent pathogen entry by mobilizing the mucosal immune response. New technological advances optimize the immunogenicity of 'live' and sub-unit vaccines.
This book offers an interdisciplinary overview on research and future strategies for rational vaccine design based on recent developments in molecular biology and immunology. It covers new aspects of the immunological interplay between prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems as well as achievements in the development of novel vaccine candidates.
Chapters on edible vaccines, on vaccines against bioterror agents and on economical and safety aspects of novel vaccine development round off this title.

Book Description
Crystallographic texture or preferred orientation has long been known to strongly influence material properties. Historically, the means of obtaining such texture data has been though the use of x-ray or neutron diffraction for bulk texture measurements, or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or electron channeling for local crystallographic information. In recent years, we have seen the emergence of a new characterization technique for probing the microtexture of materials. This advance has come about primarily through the automated indexing of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns. The first commercially available system was introduced in 1994, and since then the growth of sales worldwide has been dramatic. This has accompanied widening applicability in materials science problems such as microtexture, phase identification, grain boundary character distribution, deformation microstructures, etc. and is evidence that this technique can, in some cases, replace more time-consuming TEM or X-ray diffraction investigations.
The purpose of this book is to provide the fundamental basis for EBSD. The formation and interpretation of EBSD patterns and the gnomonic projection are described as the framework for materials characterization using EBSD. Traditional representation of texture in orientation space is discussed in terms of stereographic projections, pole figures, inverse pole figures, and orientation distribution functions before introducing the Rodrigues-Frank representation of crystallographic texture. The fundamentals of automated EBSD and the accuracy of EBSD measurements are then discussed. Current hardware and software as well as future prospects for analyzing EBSD data sets are reviewed. A brief mention of the criterion required for the purchase of an EBSD system is included as an aid to this relatively new area of materials characterization. The section concludes with chapters from three manufacturers of EBSD equipment that highlight recent advances in capabilities.
The book concludes with a review of recent applications of the technique to solve difficult problems in materials science as well as demonstrates the usefulness of coupling EBSD with other approaches such as numerical analysis, plasticity modeling, and TEM. Attention is paid to the measurement and mapping of strain using EBSD as well as the characterization of deformed microstructures, continuous recrystallization, analysis of facets, ceramics, and superconducting materials.

Book Description
Electron Microscopy of Interfaces in Metals and Alloys examines the structure of interfaces in metals and alloys using transmission electron microscopy. The book presents quantitative methods of analysis and reviews the most significant work on interface structure over the last 20 years. It provides the first book description of the methods used for quantitative identification of Burgers vectors of interfacial dislocations, including the geometric analysis of periodicities in interface structure and the comparison of experimental and theoretical electron micrographs. The book explores low- and high-angle grain boundaries and interphase interfaces between neighboring grains, emphasizing interfacial dislocations and rigid-body displacements to the structure and properties of interfaces. It also analyzes the use of two-beam images and diffraction patterns for analysis and studies n-beam lattice imaging. The book includes numerous worked examples of the analysis of the structure of grain boundaries and interphaseinterfaces, which are particularly useful to those who need to consider the nature of intercrystalline interfaces.
Book Description
This book provides a complete introduction to both the practical details and the theoretical foundations required in order to use electron microscopy as a research tool in structural biology. Planned and written by a group of 5 well-known experts who have pioneered different aspects of the field of electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) of biological macromolecules, this book offers a depth of knowledge and expertise that could only be replicated from the primary literature with great difficulty. Figures and illustrations are used liberally to simplify the understanding of concepts and to provide ready access to examples of biological applications. In addition, numerous boxes provide auxiliary information for those who wish to go more deeply into areas of background with which they may not already be familiar. The organization of topics lends itself well to using this book either to gain a comprehensive mastery of all aspects of the field of cryo-EM or as an authoritative reference source for individual topics within the field.

Book Description
This text addresses the requirements of the analyst working in a materials laboratory from a practical angle, providing reference where necessary to more detailed work. It also shows the link between XRD and other analytical techniques with integral diffraction facilities. Some applications are briefly discussed to show what can be achieved; others to show what to look for and what to check. The provision of computing facilities, while having many benefits, can also lead to a false reliance on the output that they generate. The importance of the errors that can occur, how to handle them and the need to provide some measure of uncertainty to the customer are consequently considered. This study does not purport to be universal in its coverage.

Book Description
The re-emergent field of quantitative electron crystallography is described by some of its most eminent practitioners. They describe the theoretical framework for electron scattering, specimen preparation, experimental techniques for optimum data collection, the methodology of structure analysis and refinement, and a range of applications to inorganic materials (including minerals), linear polymers, small organic molecules (including those used in nonlinear optical devices), incommensurately modulated structures (including superconductors), alloys, and integral membrane proteins. The connection between electron crystallography and X-ray crystallography is clearly defined, especially in the utilisation of the latest methods for direct determination of crystallographic phases, as well as the unique role of image analysis of high-resolution electron micrographs for phase determination. Even the aspect of multiple beam dynamic diffraction (once dreaded because it was thought to preclude
ab initio analysis) is considered as a beneficial aid for symmetry determination as well as the elucidation of crystallographic phases, and as a criterion for monitoring the progress of structure refinement. Whereas other texts have hitherto preferentially dealt with the analysis of electron diffraction and image data from thin organic materials, this work discusses - with considerable optimism - the prospects of looking at `harder' materials, composed of heavier atoms.
Audience: Could be used with profit as a graduate-level course on electron crystallography. Researchers in the area will find a statement of current progress in the field.

Book Description
Controlled fusion research explores the properties of man-made plasmas confined in toroidal machines (tokamaks) by intense magnetic fields. Beginning with the elementary principles, the author gives a rigorous and complete demonstration of the theory of magnetoplasmas. He then builds on this
base to present a new theory of magnetoplasmas which accounts for many previously inexplicable phenomena of tokamak behavior. He explains the reasons for unexpectedly large heat losses, and raises fundamental questions about whether fusion power will ever be economically viable. Chapters are
followed by exercises and notes on the mathematics. This book is be an excellent base for a graduate course on plasma physics, and will interest researchers in both applied and plasma physics.

A CLASSIC ON THE PHYSICS OF SYSTEMS NOT IN EQUILIBRIUM !.......1998-07-24
This is the Volume 10 and the last of the famous Course of Theoretical Physics by L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz. All serious students of theoretical physics must possess the ten volumes of this excellent Course, which cover in detail and rigour practically all the branches of theoretical physics. The Volume 10 treats the difficult subject of processes ocurring in systems not in statistical equilibrium. The book is very dense, but its language is clear, a characteristic of all the books written by Landau and Lifshitz. The authors put in the book the more important branches of physical kinetics. These topics include a chapter on the kinetic theory of gases, three chapters on the physics of plasmas(highly ionized gases), transport processes in metals, insulators, superconductors, quantum liquids and the kinetics of phase transitions, among other topics. Certainly no other similar book can be found in which all these topics are treated at the same time with efficiency and detail as in the Volume 10. Certainly a book that is becoming a classic on the physics of systems not in statistical equilibrium, and obrigatory to those interested in the subject!

Book Description
The aim of this book is to give a physical treatment of the kinetic theory of gases and magnetoplasmas, covering the standard material in as simple a way as possible, using mean-free-path arguments when possible and identifying problem areas where received theory has either failed or has fallen short of expectations. Examples are provided by strong shock waves, ultrasonic waves (high Knudsen numbers), and transport across strong magnetic fields. Examples of problem areas provided by strong shock waves, ultrasonic waves (high Knudsen numbers), and transport across strong magnetic fields. One of the paradoxes arising in kinetic theory concerns the fluid pressure. Collisions are necessary for a fluid force to result, yet standard kinetic theory does not entail this, being satisfied to bypass Newton's equations by defining pressure as a momentum flux. This omission usually has no adverse consequences, but with increasing Knudsen number, it leads to errors. This text pays particular attention to pressure, explaining the importance of allowing for its collisional nature from the outset in developing kinetic theory.

stop & inspect before you buy.......2000-04-01
I have read the first couple of chapters and was not pleased with the style. At times, it may lead to confusion. For instance, N, the number of particles in a Debye sphere is declared to be "not just a large value, but it is an extremely large value", N>>>1, by which it is meant that N=10^k, where k>>1. Yet in the first example that is given, N is roughly 100. At other times, the style is distracting as the author seems to put the cart before the horse with too many "we shall see that"s or with somewhat ambiguous summaries of what will follow three subsections later (Landau damping for example).
I'm not sure whether this confusion is a byproduct of the translation, but my suggestion would be to check this title out before committing yourself to it.
Book Description
Mustachioed sleuth Hercule Poirot receives a letter challenging him to solve a murder that has yet to be committed. The clues? A date and a location, and the signature A.B.C. Soon Alice Ascher is killed in Andover, an open A.B.C. railway guide near her body. Next it's Betty Barnard, strangled in Bexhill. Can Poirot find the serial killer before he or she goes through the entire alphabet?

Depends Upon Why You Like Poirot.......2007-04-15
The ABC Murders is something between a lengthy short-story and a full-on novel.
Christie's genius is that she has created, in Poirot, a man who is incredibly proud, incredibly justified in his pride, and yet, somehow, incredibly endearing. Thus, if you love Poirot mysteries because you enjoy the company of M. Poirot and Captain Hastings, this one will leave you smiling, but looking to the next one on your shelf.
However, if your preferences lay in following the mechanism of his searching, pensive, relentless investigations, you will likely enjoy this one.
the A.B.C. murders .......2006-12-11
This book is probably one of Agatha Christie's finestest books, but due its lack of fine detail and because I just didn't really like it.
This book is for anyone who likes a good mystery and a surprising turn of events.
In this book, Hwexulw Poirot receives letters of murder to occur soon. After a long time of fearful angxiety, Poirot solve the case before the E murder.
Agatha Christie is a great writer and I would recommend any of her 100 book to read.
Harsh review, based on the greatness of her writing as a whole.......2006-09-11
I love Agatha Christie, she is definately one of my favorites and definately is the reason that we have quality mystery movies and books today. The low rateing i gave this book is not because it is a bad book, in relation to most mysteries this one would be rated highly, but when put up against other Agatha Christie books its pretty crappy.
I get the idea of the plot, the numerous murders keep the action going throught the novel to lead the reader on, which was a good thing to try because i know the most common complaint with agatha christie is the boaring investigative part in the middle. My problem with the book is with the way it is constructed, several interludes happen in the book that come from the (so called) killer. This makes the reader feel like they already know the answer to the problem and makes the reader wonder why the book continues.
So after i got half way through the book i was wondering, why should i continue with this book if i already know who did it, i think that kind of takes away from the story. Although the ending comes togeather and is pretty good (not her best). I think this uncharactoristic give to the reader, in the middle of the book is what really hurts the story in the end.
Id say read the book for sure, but dont let the interludes push u to lose interest, its never as simple as she leads you to believe
Poirot and Hastings "Hunt Together" Again.......2006-09-06
THE A.B.C. MURDERS is not only one of the finest of the "Hercule Poirot" stories and one of the most memorable works in the Agatha Christie canon, it is also one of the greatest of all detective stories; it ranks right alongside Conan Doyle's THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and Christie's own THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD. The plotting is even more ingenious than is usual for Christie; the story itself is a wonderful human drama about a lonely epileptic who is suspected of being a serial murderer. Also highly recommended, for those who have finished the novel: the superb made-for-TV version of THE A.B.C. MURDERS, starring David Suchet as Poirot and available on DVD from Amazon.com.
predictable ending, but good read.......2006-08-15
agatha christie ventures into somewhat uncharted territory - the this time, poirot is on the trail of a homicidal maniac. Christie fans will see the ending coming. the characters are a bit bland. Poirot comes up with the solution, but in the end any number of other solutions could have been equally plausible, so it is not clear why he went with this particular one.
Still, it is an Agatha Christie book, so even when it is bad, it is good.
