Book Description
Assuming only background knowledge of algebra and elementary calculus, and access to a modern personal computer,
Nonlinear Computer Modeling of Chemical and Biochemical Data presents the fundamental basis and procedures of data modeling by computer using nonlinear regression analysis. Bypassing the need for intermediary analytical stages, this method allows for rapid analysis of highly complex processes, thereby enabling reliable information to be extracted from raw experimental data.
By far the greater part of the book is devoted to selected applications of computer modeling to various experiments used in chemical and biochemical research. The discussions include a short review of principles and models for each technique, examples of computer modeling for real and theoretical data sets, and examples from the literature specific to each instrumental technique.
The book also offers detailed tutorial on how to construct suitable models and a score list of appropriate mathematics software packages.

A mathematical error.......1999-12-20
In page 18, the equation
y=A'exp(-kt)+mt+b (2.22)
is transformed by taking the logarithm of both sides, the authors say
ln y=-kt+lnA'+ln(mt+b) (2.23)
is obtained.
This is wrong!
For instance,
17=10+7 but, ln 17 is NOT equal to ln 10 + ln 7.
In page 17, a very important point about linearizing the nonlinear data is mentioned. A weighted lease-squares is needed in logarithmic transformation.
But, in many actual applications, HPLC method is used. In such data, the noise (error) is expressed as coefficient of variation, not a constant variance.
In this case, weighting is not really needed. A practical aspect like this has to be explored in more details.
This book however has collected many topics in chemical data analysis from literatures, and can be a good reference in many disciplines.

Rarefied Gas Dynamics: From Basic Concepts to Actual Calculations (Cambridge Texts in Applied Mathematics)
ASIN: 0198561954 |
Book Description
The direct simulation Monte Carlo (or DSMC) method has, in recent years, become widely used for engineering and scientific studes of gas glows that involve low densities or very small physical dimensions. This method is a direct physical simulation of the motion of representative molecules, rather than a numverical solution of the equations that provide a mathematical model of the flow. the computations are nolonger expensive and the period since the 1976 publication of the original Molecular Gas Dynamics has seen enormous improvements in the molecular models, the procedures, and the implementation strategies for the DSMC method. the molecular theory of gas flows is developed from first principles and is extended to cover the new models and procedures. Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2005-12-12
Despite the odd typographical error, this book is outstanding. It is clear, concise and quite readable. Material is presented in a manner which is easy to understand. The only slight criticisms are that my copy did not include the promised computer disk, that often the descriptions of what the code does are often hard to understand and that the binding on the book is of extremely poor quality (my copy was losing pages within days of purchase). Otherwise very highly recommended.
Great Material -- This edition is terribly made..........2005-03-04
I gave the material in the book 5 stars, but the new edition 0 stars (at least for ~$200). My advisor just bought the newest edition (the old one finally falling apart after years of use) and it is cheaply made. The binding is already coming apart and the text is difficult to read because the text is fuzzy. Hopefully Dr. Bird will write a newer edition with some of the most recent advances and a better printing.
Tour de Force.......2000-05-15
An astonishing accomplishment by the man who more or less invented the field of DSMC calculation. Includes a handy-dandy disk (with source) so you can run you own problem with a variety of different boundary conditions. See also Bird 1973, Phys Fluids, v16 pp1830-1834.
Book Description
Gas turbines play an important role in power generation and aeroengines. An extended survey of methods associated with the control and systems identification in these engines,
Dynamic Modelling of Gas Turbines reviews current methods and presents a number of new perspectives.
• Describes a total modelling and identification program for various classes of aeroengine, allowing you to deal with the engine’s behaviour over its complete life cycle.
• Shows how the above regime can be applied to a real engine balancing the theory with practical use.
• Follows a comparative approach to the study of existing and newly derived techniques thus offering an informed choice of controllers and models from the tried-and trusted to the most up-to-date evolutionary optimisation models.
• Presents entirely novel work in modelling, optimal control and systems identification to help you get the most from your engine designs.
Dynamic Modelling of Gas Turbines represents the latest research of three groups of internationally recognised experts in gas turbine studies. It will be of interest to academics working in aeroengine control and to industrial practitioners in companies concerned with their design. The work presented here is easily extendible to be relevant in other areas in which gas turbines play a role such as power engineering.

Book Description
This text describes computer programs for simulating phenomena in hydrodynamics, gas dynamics, and elastic plastic flow in one, two, and three dimensions. Included in the two-dimensional program are Maxwell's equations, and thermal and radiation diffusion. The numerical procedures described in the text permit the exact conservation of physical properties in the solutions of the fundamental laws of mechanics. The author also treats materials, including the use of simulation programs to predict material behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book Highly Recommended for any serious work in the field.......2007-03-29
This book is a development of Wilkins early paper (Calculation of Elastic-Plastic Flow) followed by a generalization to 3 dimensions of his finite difference equations for solving fluid flow mechanics. The work presented forms the basis of many finite difference programs providing stable methods for solving partial differential equations of fluid flow for high velocity plastic deformations and magneto hydro dynamics. The book is easy to read and complete, he is highly recommended for any serious work in the field.
This book is the description of the algorithm of the HEMP code.......2007-03-06
I gave this book 3 stars not because it's badly written or uninformative, but because you are bound to be disappointed when you open it since it doesn't correspond to the expectations its title generates.
The book is not about computer simulations of impact in general, but about the method used by Wilkins in his HEMP code. In this book, he explains the various parts of his algorithm. For instance, he explains his method of solution of the PDEs (a Lagrangian finite-volume-type method), his material models, etc. Wilkins and HEMP are well-known and well-respected names in the field, so the book is a very valuable addition to any collection on the subject. However, many of the methods described in this book have been replaced by more advanced ones. So the book is a good introductory reference for those who are new to the subject, but it is not where you will learn the state of the art (for the state-of-the art, David Benson's papers provide good information and useful recent references...).

Book Description
This book is the first to give a comprehensive presentation of the modern approach to numerical simulation of supersonic and hypersonic flows around bodies. In its use of the viscous gas dynamics equations throughout the computational domain, the main advantage of the approach presented is that it takes account of the important effects of rarefaction, viscous-inviscid interaction, separation, chemical and thermal non-equilibria, and radiation. A number of example calculations are given, demonstrating the application of the viscous shock layer models to a wide range of modern gas dynamics problems. Audience: Researchers into supersonic and hypersonic gas dynamics. Suitable for those already familiar with the fundamentals of gas dynamics, the physics of high-temperature gases and finite-difference numerical methods. Also suitable for graduate and postgraduate courses on computational gas dynamics and heat transfer.

Historically Significant Contribution.......2006-04-17
Anytime one looks at a work in another historical context, consideration of time and place must be given if the communicator's message is to make sense. This seventeenth century oration was delivered by John Milton to Parliament, with the central theme of the right of individuals to seek out the truth for themselves.
A Christian worldview was the framework from which Milton's peers made decisions. The age of official state religions was a contemporary issue. Milton calls for the individual conscious to be the determining factor, not an institution. He bases his argument on historical precedent, the Bible, errors made by the Roman Catholic Church, and the virtue of the members of Parliament.
