Morphological Evolution, Aptations, Homoplasies, Constraints, And Evolutionary Trends: Catfishes As A Case Study On General Phylogeny And Macroevolution

Book Description

With more than 2700 species catfishes constitute one of the most diverse groups of Vertebrates. They have a wide geographical distribution, being found in all continents including Antarctica, where fossils were reported. They are not only remarkable in respect of their taxonomic diversity and biogeographic distribution, but also for their amazing anatomical, ethological and ecological diversity. This amazing diversity and complexity precisely provided the rationale to undertake this work: 1) it renders very difficult the study of these fishes as a whole, in particular in what concerns their higher-level phylogeny and evolution; 2) at the same time, it renders this group a very interesting case study for general phylogenetic and macroevolutionary discussions. Therefore, after providing a short introduction to the group and to the methodology and materials in chapters 1 and 2, chapter 3 deals with a cladistic analysis of catfish higher-level phylogeny based on 440! morphological characters in 87 genera representing all extant catfish families. This analysis includes a large number of characters not included in other analyses, such as those concerning the cephalic and pectoral girdle musculature or the structures associated with the mandibular barbels. It gives particular importance to complex structures, thus paving the way for a discussion, in chapter 4, on the evolution of these complexes within the whole order and thus on catfish general evolution. The results obtained and the examples provided by the analysis of the phylogeny and macroevolution of the remarkably diverse and cosmopolitan catfishes allow to discuss, in chapter 5, general phylogenetic and macroevolutionary topics such as primary and secondary homologies, mosaic evolution, functional uncouplings, aptations, adaptations, exaptations, parallelisms, convergences, constraints, speciation, living fossils, evolutionary trends, and the relative contribution of myological and! osteological characters in phylogenetic reconstructions.

I admire Mr Sanchez.......2007-01-01

I must say that I admire Mr. Sanche'z approach to the realities of the youthful views of society in the world. I originally read the SHECCID book by him which drew me to read this book. It helped me understand a lot of viewpoints on how adults and teenagers view life and how the constant struggle between communication will always be..most importantly how life can be so intertwined... reminds me how small the world can be. One's choices can really have an impact in another's. I love the views Mr Sanchez expressed in these books and I recommend but of course!

Este libro esta escrito para que uno lo pueda leer y entender sin necesidad de poseer un harto vocabulario complicado. Te dan los consejos en castellano simple. Al igual que los otros libros de este autor, este te deja una importante leccion y depende de cada lector en aplicarla a su vida como mejor le parezca. Personalmente a mi familia nos ha ayudado mucho a valorarnos mas cada dia y a ver la vida de otra manera. Se los recomiendo a todos porque en fin no hay que esperar a que uno tenga los problemas para pedir ayuda. Lo ideal es evitar que "esos problemitas" que todos tenemos lo sepamos manejar y asi evitarlos y es asi como el autor nos muestra una guia a seguir en nuestras vidas.

In the early summer of 1967 a small band of Spanish Americans raided the courthouse in a dusty town in New Mexico to publicize their claim that much of the land in the state had been stolen from their ancestors. The author, who happened to be in New Mexico at the time, was drawn into the events and set out to discover what had happened during the raid, why it had happened, the legitimacy of the raiders' claims, and what sort of person was their leader, Reies Tijerina.

This fascinating and important book presents a moving picture of the impoverished existence of the Spaish Americans whose folk traditions have brought them into direct armed conflict with the state and national governments. Interwoven with the details of the current "war" are the history of the land grant controversy, the life of Tijerina - an evangelist preacher with little formal education but a great vision - and the relationship of the Spanish Americans' actions with the growing militancy of other minority group in the country.

We are fortunate to have this beautiful man writng for us. It is better when you get to here him read. I love everything he read to us at Nueva Onda but the story in this book called ""Pride" I love so much. The best, about El Paso but about us in the valley too. About our people, our cultura, and our pride.

People need to learn more of Dagoberto and his work. We are lucky and I for one can not wsit for his next book and visit.

gilb read yesterday here at the arkansas literary festival and was the best speaker I heard. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed his talk and lecture. I came to this page to buy his essay book bc the festival forgot to order it! what we heard him read was a such treat and he was utterly entertaining. the women I was with were talking about the man's movie star looks and charm but I say put try to put that aside. the man and his writing are beyond a doubt talented.

I'm not sure what the last reviewer read, but I read "Gritos" b/c I have read rave reviews. As a Mexican-American, I was naturally excited to read the book. I was so not disappoinnted!! What was most impressive was how I couldn't put the book down. I didn't find a weak story in it, and I'd say all of them were brave and honest. I definately did not read anything poorly written or complaining about discrimination--that is a ridiculous charge! This is a brilliant book by a great writer and is a must read, especially if you are from the Southwest..

When Dagoberto Gilb stays on point, ain't nobody can touch him. Some of these essays are sheer genius. But too many of them are undisciplined rants. When he's self indulgent, it's embarrassing. He's so busy foaming on about being discriminated against for being Mexican, he lets the hard work of writing slide, and loses the reader's natural sympathy. He'd have a better case if he wrote it and didn't just type it half the time.

Enriqueta Vasquez's columns written during the peak of the civil rights movement provided a platform for her fierce but hopeful voice of protest. In her column, entitled ¡Despierten Hermanos! [Awaken, Brothers and Sisters!], she used both anger and humor in her efforts to stir her fellow Chicanos to action. Drawing upon her own experiences as a Chicana, she wrote about such issues as racism, sexism, imperialism, and poverty, issues that remain pressing today.
