This book presents a systematic description of the knowledge accumulated on the physical oceanography, marine chemistry and pollution, marine biology and geology, meteorology and hydrology of the Black Sea. It presents the principal characteristic features of the environmental conditions of the sea and their changes in the second half of the 20th century. At present, the principal problems of the Black Sea are related to the estimation of the intensity of the chemical pollution of the sea and its impact upon the biota. Special attention is given to the socioeconomic, legal, and political issues in the Black Sea region. This publication is based on numerous observational data collected by the authors of the various chapters during sea expeditions, on the archive data of several Russian and Ukrainian oceanographic institutions, as well as on a large body of scientific literature, mainly published in Russian editions. This book is aimed at specialists concerned with research in the various fields of physical oceanography, marine chemistry, pollution studies, and biology whose work involves solving a wide range of problems from regional climate to mesoscale processes, and who use a variety of methods from remote sensing of the seas to numerical and laboratory modeling.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Langmuir circulations in a coastal environment at an inner shelf site with strong tidal forcing were examined using a 4-month observation of high- resolution velocity profiles during the ONR-sponsored CBLAST-Low air-sea interaction experiment. Because of their potential contributions to mixing processes in the surface boundary layer, Langmuir circulations are important for naval operations such as ASW, MCM and Amphibious operations in littoral waters. A detection algorithm for upwelling / downwelling velocities due to Langmuir circulations was developed. Analyses focused on long-fetch, unstratified water column conditions with locally developed seas. The observations showed that strong Langmuir circulations greatly reduced water column shear arising from the tidally forced bottom boundary layer, while there was no significant effect from the strong tidal boundary layer on the formation of Langmuir cells. Long fetch conditions had the strongest vertical velocities with Langmuir number 0.1-0.4, while short fetch conditions have weaker vertical velocities with Langmuir number greater than 0.5. Cell vertical velocities were correlated with the water friction velocity, but penetration depths did not depend on forcing mechanisms. Spacing and penetration depths were correlated for increasing wind speed and wave heights whereas this correlation was not seen for constant high wind speed and wave heights.

The essential Crane .......2005-09-19

This work contains the essential Crane including 'The Red Badge of Courage' and 'Maggie: A girl of the streets". It also contains Crane's most famous story, "The Open Boat" a selection of his poetry, and many illuminating personal letters.
Crane by the time he passed from the world at the age of twenty- nine had already written the masterwork ,"The Red Badge of Courage" which would make him part of the American canon.
His deep kind of poetic realism, his journalistic searching among the ordinary people, his reporting upon horrifying realities with a kind of mature brilliance and wisdom make him an American classic.
Troubled and incomplete as his life was he nonetheless managed to make a work of enduring value.
