Book Description
This edition features the successful format that has characterized the previous editions. It includes essays that add relevance and interest to the experiments, and emphasis on the development of the important laboratory techniques, the use of spectroscopy and instrumental methods of analysis, a section featuring conventional-scale experiments and methods, and a wide selection of well-tested and well-written experiments.
Customer Reviews:
Good content, poor construction.......2006-11-10
Having owned the previous version of this book, I would have to say that the layout in this new version is much more linear and easy to follow. In addition to new experiments, the instructions are clear for a beginning organic lab student. That being said, however, the material that the book is constructed from is sub par...the pages are very delicate, seeming to be made of tissue paper...Over all, I would recommend this book for its content, but not for the craftsmanship.
Book in great shape.......2005-09-19
Book is flawless, not even scratches on the cover, cannot remember promptness of delivery.
AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE!.......2001-07-25
Pavia et al's Organic Laboratory Techniques (2nd Ed) is an astonishingly excellent book for the beginning student.
In great (yet delightful) detail it describes a series of 60 varied experiments designed to acquaint the reader with a plethora of laboratory techniques, from Measuring Volumes and Weights up thru Chromatography and Spectroscopy.
Particularly good are the many exceptionally clear drawings of laboratory apparatus, and rational behind the instrumentation. (Eg, do you know why you should put a trap in the aspirator hose, or for that matter how the aspirator (vacuum) works?) Sprinkled throughout are hints on how best to perform this, that or the other thing.
A thorough reading of this gem will make you right at home in the organic chemistry laboratory, and indeed will practically make you an organic chemist in spite of yourself.
In fact, if you are thinking of going to college, you might ask whether this text is used in the college's Organic Chemistry Lab course. If not, and you are interested in science, find a school that uses it! And if you are already in a lab course with another text, you would be well advised to get this eminently readable treasure also.
Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It.......2000-08-29
Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our own lab manual to be followed. Pavia text becomes a close handy reference for lab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which include filtration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam), chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studied before conducting experiments for beginning students. Unless your organic lab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it.
Best organic laboratory manual available!.......1999-05-17
I have taken a full course using this book and I think that it is the best one I have seen! Organic chemistry is a hard subject and this book lays it out in an understandable way. The "techniuques" section is current, readable, and the pictures are well done. The essays that accompany many of the experiments are entertaining and give good background information that helps doing the experiments more enjoyable. Probably the best section is the "identification of unknowns" section which lays out in a good logical way how to identify what you have in the lab. I think that the book also addresses and promotes a great trend in chemistry i.e. microscale research that reduces waste and promotes conservation of chemicals and the environment.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.
Book Description
In this laboratory textbook for students of organic chemistry, experiments are designed to utilize standard-scale ("macroscale") glassware and equipment but with smaller amounts of chemicals and reagents. The textbook features a large number of traditional organic reactions and syntheses, as well as the isolation of natural products and experiments with a biological or health sciences focus. The organization of the text is based on essays and topics of current interest. Contains a comprehensive treatment of laboratory techniques including both small-scale and some microscale methods.

Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques : A Small-Scale Approach (Brooks/Cole Laboratory Series for Organic Chemistry).......2005-09-14
It has taken this company a month to even send this book. It is quite amazing how slow this company and how it treats its customers. Do not expect books to come unless you want to wait til the book become a classic. Highly suggest to purchase from someone else. Luckly, I've been using a book from lab TA for my organic lab
class.
WWU grad.......2003-09-05
Dr. Pavia's class was so much fun. It was great to have a book written for our facility, by our instructors. I recommend this book to other schools because the techniques are clearly explained and the experiments are interesting.
Don't sell this book back!.......2002-09-20
An outstanding lab text for sophomore level 1-yr organic courses. Any chemistry/physical science major should not sell this book back at the end of the semester! Half of the book is dedicated to experiments which while informative is not the real gem here. The other half of the book covers techniques in organic and microscale chemistry. If you ever need to build a chromatographic column or do vacuum filtration again, you will be glad that you kept this book in your library.
The techniques section alone justifies buying this book. Chemistry majors, microbiologists, environmental scientists and engineers will all find this text valuable in their future careers.

Book Description
Agatha Christie is more than the most popular mystery writer of all time. In a career that spans over half a century, her name is synonymous with brilliant deception, ingenious puzzles, and the surprise denouement. By virtually inventing the modern mystery novel she has earned her title as the Queen of Crime. Curious? Then you're invited to read....DEATH COMES AS THE ENDIn this startling historical mystery, unique in the author's canon, Agatha Christie investigates a deadly mystery at the heart of a dissonant family in ancient Egypt. Imhotep, wealthy landowner and priest of Thebes, has outraged his sons and daughters by bringing a beautiful concubine into their fold. And the manipulative Nofret has already set about a plan to usurp her rivals' rightful legacies. When her lifeless body is discovered at the foot of a cliff, Imhotep's own flesh and blood become the apparent conspirators in her shocking murder. But vengeance and greed may not be the only motives....AUTHORBIO: AGATHA CHRISTIE is the world's best known mystery writer. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Her writing career spanned more than half a century, during which she wrote 80 novels and short story collections, as well as 14 plays, one of which, The Mousetrap, is the longest-running play in history. Two of the characters she created, the brilliant little Belgian Hercule Poirot and the irrepressible and relentless Miss Marple, went on to become world-famous detectives. Both have been widely dramatized in feature films and made-for-TV movies.Agatha Christie also wrote under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. As well, she wrote four non-fiction books including an autobiography and an entertaining account of the many expeditions she shared with her archaeologist husband, Sir Max Mallowan. Agatha Christie died in 1976.
Customer Reviews:
Who Shot (offed) JR (lots of people)?.......2007-07-31
I thought I had read all the Agatha Christie mysteries many years ago, but DEATH COMES AS THE END seemed unfamiliar and I picked it up. It is an anomaly for Christie, a historical setting and characters, though as she says in an author's note, the plot could be set elsewhere in time and place but she was inspired by artifacts turned up in an Egyptian archeological dig in the early 1920's. In fact, I could easily see the story played out with similar characters in an English baronial manor house in the early 20th century. Or on a Texas ranch in a 1980's American television show.
The plot is vintage Christie, with twists, turns and red herrings galore. It is mostly logical. It takes place in the household of an autocratic ancient Egyptian ka-priest, whose sons vie for power in the family's vast agricultural and commercial holdings. The delicate balance of family interrelationships is knocked off kilter when the widowed patriarch brings home a vixenish concubine, apparently an acceptable practice back when. The female characters range from witchy to ingénue to matriarchal to unctuous servant. If they seem stereotypical some at least have a little psychological resonance and there are faint whiffs of English literary icons ranging from Lady MacBeth and Iago to Uriah Heep. It is refreshing to see the ingénue itch for self possession and independence.
A word about reading Christie again after at least 20 years: I was surprised at how "styleless" her writing style is. Fluent and efficient, yes. But no idiom to distinguish the narrative voice from American English. Perhaps I've been watching too many PBS versions of her work that I expected differently.
Who done it?.......2007-06-10
Death Comes As The End was an extremely well told story. It was so easy to get lost in the imagery and events that were taking place. The novel was fast paced and got straight to the point from the very beginning. I especially love the language, it's somewhat poetic. The depth of understanding of human relationships that is conveyed in the simple speech patterns of Christie's characters is almost incomprehensible. I thought I knew who the killer was, but truly I did not solve this mystery until the very end. I first read this book ten or more years ago when I was a teenager. I enjoyed Death Comes As The End today just as much, if not more than the first time I read it. I am not by any standards an avid mystery reader. I first selected this book because I was curious about Agatha Christie as an author and my interest was piqued at the possibility of reading about Egyptian characters. That said, this book is one that can be enjoyed by many readers, even quote, non-mystery readers. I could read this book again and again.
One of the best from one of the best........2007-03-26
This is one of my favourite Agatha Christie books, albeit lesser known for some reason.....If you like AC, you're sure to love this one!
Familiar Christie quality in an unfamiliar setting.......2006-11-16
Not to be macabre or morbid, but the Agatha Christie novels I enjoy most are the ones that really rack up the body count. It's not that I particularly enjoy murders, it's just that the Christie titles with lots of deaths in them have, to me, a slightly more engaging narrative than the ones where the people in them aren't dropping like flies. In other words, it's more fun when it's not just one death at the beginning followed by lots and lots of dense investigation. In novels like "Death Comes As The End" and (to name another multiple-death Christie title) "And Then There Were None", each individual death can't have TOO complicated a motive and method behind it because the book needs room to describe the motives and methods behind the other murders. This results in more drama and excitement (finding bodies IS dramatic) and less endless explanation.
So, "Death Comes As the End" has the benefit of lots of drama and excitement, generated by all the poor victims strewn among its pages. And it also has the benefit of its unusual setting, ancient Egypt. The final benefit is a comfortable, familiar one: solid Agatha Christie characters and story telling (which I've always enjoyed even in the single-death titles). I really liked this book, a Christie title I somehow never got to in the past, and was glad I took a detour off the beaten track of recently-published mysteries and thrillers to give it a whirl.
Classic Christie.......2006-07-06
At first it felt a bit strange reading a very British mystery set in ancient Egypt, but now I think that's part of it's charm (like going to the British Museum to see Egyptian artifacts).
I enjoyed it just as much this time around as I did when I was a teenager, when it was one of my favorites.
