X-Ray Diffraction: In Crystals, Imperfect Crystals, and Amorphous Bodies
ASIN: 0198505523 |
Book Description
The present book provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the topics of crystallography and diffraction for undergraduate and beginning graduate students and lecturers in physics, chemistry, materials and earth sciences, but will also be of interest to the layperson who wishes to know about these topics beyond the level given in more general trade science books. The book shows how crystal structures may be built up from simple ideas of atomic packing and co-ordination, and develops the concepts of crystal symmetry, point and space groups by way of two-dimensional examples of patterns and tilings. Furthermore, the concept of the reciprocal lattice is explained in simple terms and its importance in an understanding of light, x-ray and electron diffraction shown. Finally, the book covers practical examples of the applications of these techniques, and describes the importance of diffraction in the performance of optical instruments. For this second edition, the existing material has been thoroughly updated, additional figures and exercises have been supplied and two new chapters added. From reviews on the 1/e: '... This is a timely, well-constructed book which should be seriously considered by every teacher of crystallography and can be recommended to anyone who wants to get to grips with crystallography and diffraction.' P. Goodhew, Journal of Microscopy, June 1998 'IUCr publications have always been outstanding for quality of presentation and exposition and this book maintains that high standard.' J.E. Chisholm, Mineralogical Magazine, February 1998

Review.......2007-04-02
I found this book to be a very nice introduction of X-Ray Crystallography. There is just enough detail so that it is not overwhelming, but you can still learn quite a bit from this book.
good introduction to crystallography.......2006-07-05
For an undergrad reader, Hammond develops the theory and explains the experiments you can do in crytallography. The theory of scattering from a single crystal explains the diffraction patterns. The latter are what you observe, and the text shows how you can work back from these to deduce what the underlying crystal structure might be.
There are variations on this approach. Especially the powder method, where you do not have a single crystal, but a powder of microcrystals. Which can be visualised as spinning the Bravais lattice around its origin, to give the diffraction patterns.
More recent observations like quasicrystals are also covered.
A good introduction to crystallography.
Highly recommended........2003-01-14
Very nice book, very comprehensive, excellent quality of pictures. Can be recommended as a very gentle introduction to crystallography and diffraction. Probably not so useful for more advanced students.

Book Description
Basic Crystallography J. -J. Rousseau Department of Physics, University of Maine, Le Mans, France Translated from the French by A. James, University of Picardie, France Basic Crystallography deals with the basic principles of geometrical crystallography which are introduced through the study of lattices, symmetry operations and the enumeration and construction of point groups and space groups. Stereographic projection is used to enable students to visualise crystallographic structures in real space. The author devotes the second part of the book to X-ray crystallography, showing how different diffraction directions depend on the lattice and how spot intensities are related to the unit-cell. To give students an understanding of the principles of structural determination, the classical techniques of diffraction and methods of interpreting spectra are examined. To tackle the more challenging aspects of the subject, help is given to the student in the form of exercises with answers and a computer disk accompanies the book allowing readers to work through exercises and plot their own crystallographic data. Written primarily for final year undergraduate students of physics, chemistry, materials science and geometry the book will also be useful for engineering students.

Book Description
Linus Pauling called haemoglobin the most interesting and important of molecules. This important volume shows how X-ray crystallography was used to determine its bewilderingly complex atomic structure and to unravel the stereochemical mechanisms of its respiratory functions. It introduces isomorphous replacement with heavy atoms which led to the first protein structures, haemoglobin and its simpler relative myoglobin. Later papers deal with the stereochemistry of the cooperative effects of haemoglobin, with the relationships between the structures and impaired functions of abnormal haemoglobin, with species adaptation of haemoglobin, and with its action as a drug receptor and as an oxygen sensor. The final papers deal with amino acid repeats which act as polar zippers and their role in certain inherited neurodegenerative diseases.

The World of Nasrudin

Book Description
Today we find him in a high-level physics report, illustrating phenomena that can't be described in ordinary technical terms. He appears in psychology textbooks, illuminating the workings of the mind in a way no straightforward explanation can.
In three definitive volumes (The Exploits of the Incomparable Mulla Nasrudin, The Pleasantries of the Incredible Mulla Nasrudin and The Subtleties of the Inimitable Mulla Nasrudin) Idries Shah takes us to the very heart of this mysterious mentor, the Mulla Nasrudin. Skillful contemporary retellings of hundreds of collected stories and sayings bring the unmistakable - often backhanded - wisdom, wit and charm of the timeless jokester to life.
The Mulla and his stories appear in literature and oral traditions from the Middle East to Greece, Russia, France - even China. Many nations claim Nasrudin as a native son, but nobody really knows who he was or where he came from.
According to a legend dating from at least the 13th century, Nasrudin was snatched as a schoolboy from the clutches of the "Old Villain" - the crude system of thought that ensnares man - to carry through the ages the message of how to escape. He was chosen because he could make people laugh, and humor has a way of slipping through the cracks of the most rigid thinking habits.
Acclaimed as humorous masterpieces, as collections of the finest jokes, as priceless gift books, and for hundreds "enchanted tales", this folklore figure's antics have also been divined as "mirroring the antics of the mind". The jokes are, as Idries Shah notes, "perfectly designed models for isolating and holding distortions of the mind which so often pass for reasonable behavior". Therefore they have a double use: when the jokes have been enjoyed, their psychological significance starts to sink in.
In fact, for many centuries they have been studied in Sufi circles for their hidden wisdom. They are used as teaching exercises, in part to momentarily "freeze" situations in which states of mind can be recognized. The key to the philosophic significance of the Nasrudin jokes is given in Idries Shah's book "The Sufis" and a complete system of mystical training based upon them was described in the Hibbert Journal.
In these delightful volumes, Shah not only gives the Mulla a proper vehicle for our times, he proves that the centuries-old stories and quips of Nasrudin are still some of the funniest jokes in the world.
Customer Reviews:
The wisecracking Sufi makes for fun thought provoking reading........2006-08-28
I very much enjoyed this book and its illustrations. I could have done without some of the modern input. The Mullah Nasrudin lived many centuries ago and is credited with a collection of humorous stories about the mundane aspects of life. These stories could be compared somewhat to the Zen koans, only I found them more enjoyable. My favorite Nasrudin stories, however, are those that were told to me. This book is also available in Spanish as Las ocurrencias del incredible mula Nasrudin.
The modern equivalent would be Yogi Berra - .......2006-01-25
The exploits of Mulla Nasrudin are supposed to demonstrate issues of sufism in practice, and it may well do, i don't know much about sufism, but this is quite a nice little book nevertheless.
These are very short tales - not much longer than Aesop's fables and they demonstrate human falibility and strength on a number of different levels inspiring great thought.
Loved the early editions with the illustrations by Richard Williams, but this was a nice edition
For instance the tale of Nasrudin becoming scared when seeing riders on the rode, imagining he would be captured by them and sold into slavery he flees over a nearby wall. the good Travellers who cannot understand the action pursue him to make sure he is all right and find him cowering in a grave. Nasrudin observes he fled there because of them and they came to the grave because of him. On the surface a strange tale and yet the deeper meaning of motivations unravels a whole new set of concepts to consider.
This reminds me of some of the sayings of yogi berra, they are shorter but in fact same appealing levels of meaning to them that question our understanding of events.
Poor translation........2005-07-18
This book suffers from a very poor translation to English. I think it has a lot to do with the choices of words. Many times I found that if the author rephrased certain sentences then a joke and a moral would make much more sense. Also, some of the short stories contain illogically connected sentences thus really doing a trick on the meaning of a joke that author was trying to translate. All these is very sad because the stories of Nasrudin can be a real delight. I guess I will have to find a better book.
A blast of a read!.......2002-07-17
The trend during the last few years towards stories about stupid people brought us such non-classics (but entertaining reads) as "The 776 Stupidest Things Ever Said", "The Darwin Awards", and others. But what few people know is that such stories were circulating 1000 years ago in the Sufi storytelling tradition.
These stories are the equivalent of our "Urban Legends". Oddly enough, as I read this, I wish that I could view the world in such simple ways as the Mulla Nasrudin, who is the character in all these stories. His views, often twisted, very often completely at odds with his surroundings, are also very pragmatic, and make perfect sense in his mind.
These stories are tremendous fun, and rather thought-provoking.
Enjoy!
Nasrudin ain't what he used to be..........2002-06-18
Shah's renderings of the stories of the folk character, Nasrudin (aka Nasruddin) were much more charming in the early editions when they were illuminated by the clever pen-and-ink illustrations of the animator Richard Williams. Without those illustrations, these editions are dry and pedantic.

Some good, but much of it seems like "leftovers.".......2005-11-03
I loved the first three collections of Nasrudin stories (Pleasantries, Subtleties, and the other one). They seemed carefully selected and placed in such an order that there was nice flow.
This final collection seems to simply be the stories that Idries Shah rejected from the other three books. And they are placed in alphabetical order, instead of a thoughtful order.
Idries, from my understanding, did not have anything to do with this collection. It was members of his family who put it together, so it's understandable it's not quite up to the same snuff.
All that being said, there are certainly some gems in there. If you absolutely love Nasrudin, you'll at least enjoy this. If you liked the stories okay, but do not consider yourself a big fan, then you might want to skip this and instead purchase any of the other books you don't have.
Nasrudin is back!.......2003-10-02
"The World of Nasrudin," the final volume in a remarkable series, is -- like all of Idries Shah's books -- full of surprises. It was Shah who, almost 40 years ago, began introducing the Western world to the age-old Middle Eastern and Central Asian stories and jokes that showcase Mulla Nasrudin, the irresistible, irrepressible and ever-morphing Sufi teaching figure who happily appears as a sage one moment and as a fool the next. In his three previous books of Nasrudin tales, marvelously adorned by gorgeous Richard Williams drawings of the Mulla and his donkey, Shah showed that Nasrudin jokes have an extra punchline and an unexpected payoff. The Mulla's antics tend to stay with you, because they uncannily mirror human thought and behavior in all its beauty and ridiculousness.
Today Nasrudin stories are used to illustrate all kinds of points: I ran across the Mulla in a book explaining Goethe's approach to science, and on a Web site that uses Nasrudin to present the chemical effects of ultrasound. Is Mulla Nasrudin on his way to becoming a globally recognizable figure? Coming seven years after Shah's death, "The World of Nasrudin" seems to suggest that there's still a lot left to be learned from -- and about -- the redoubtable Nasrudin.
In the first place, consider the new book's unadorned, industrial strength, giant economy size. The first three Nasrudin books put a total of 370 stories about the Mulla into circulation. "The World of Nasrudin," unillustrated and almost encyclopedic in scope, adds another 378 new, previously unpublished stories to the total. Next, there's the world that "The World of Nasrudin" is entering -- a post-September 11th world where, for some people at least, a bearded figure in robe and turban is not associated with tolerance, goodwill, and understanding. Shah's answer to this point is to paint a clearer picture of the world Nasrudin sprang from. The only "enemy" in Sufi books is narrow thinking and the kind of rigid, fearful, emotionally clouded rhetoric that can imprison individual minds and threaten the sanity of whole societies. Many of the Nasrudin stories in "The World of Nasrudin" are centuries old, and it is noticeable that many of the adversaries Nasrudin daringly outwits in these ancient tales are brutal and violent tyrants, stretching back to Tamerlane himself, and a long succession of religious fanatics, blinkered bigots, and self-proclaimed and self-deluding men of God -- as well as the usual run of pompous misers, incompetent judges, and just plain dopes.
Fortunately, "The World of Nasrudin" can, like its predecessors, also be read for many other purposes, such as sheer fun, or the awakening jolt of truth. Students of humor will be pleased to discover what may well be the original version of the venerable "Waiter, there's a fly in my soup" joke.
