5 out of 5 stars Missing link between Tesla and Einstein.......2001-12-15

Bearden does an excellent job of describing scalar technology at least the theory aspect. This book is written in the attempt to bring scientists and EE closer to the truth on what is missing in physics to unify the three fields: QM,GR,EM (what Einstein was trying to do but failed to achieve Bearden explains why). I would recommend this to everyone but only those who are truly interested in physics, Tesla, Einstein, & perhaps technology would find this work to be of much helpful knowledge. For myself personally, Bearden has showed me the path that no one has done before. For myself coming from a Tesla background Bearden goes a step further and describes how physics was side tracked and how to get back on the right track through the many many references that is cited, all coming from a man that devoted his life for science. This book is a must for the pioneer in physics.

3 out of 5 stars An Important Topic - An Out-Dated Book.......2006-07-17

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has found many applications in the process industries, so this is becoming an important topic in chemical engineering.

Since Artificial Intelligence and its applications have evolved, to remain competitive you need to keep up-to-date with the technology. Be aware that this book was published in 1992, and in 14 years many things have been improved in the field of Advanced Process Control, the primary industrial application area for AI in Chemical Engineering.

Not a good buy considering how old it is and its price.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Control Engineering, and have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry.

    Book Description

    Low-volume high-variety products like personalized cars or customized engines will be the key issues for manufacturing in the 21st century. The necessary control technology is based on the concept of holons, which are the units of production and behave as autonomous and cooperative agents, providing flexibility, adaptability, agility, and dynamic reconfigurability. This book presents the latest research results in agent-based manufacturing as carried out by researchers in academia and industry within the international "Holonic Manufacturing Systems" project. As this project was driven by industry, the results presented here are of vital interest not just to researchers in agent technologies or distributed artificial intelligence, but also to engineers and professionals in industry who have to respond to rapid changes and new demands in production.

      Book Description

      It is clear that the techniques of artificial intelligence are useful for more than just the development of thinking machines; they constitute powerful problem-solving tools in their own right and expand the range of problems in science that can be tackled. AI methods can now be used on a routine basis by scientists in academic research as well as the commercial world, it is therefore vital that science students are exposed to, and understand these techniques. This is the first book to present an introduction to AI methods for science undergraduates. The examples are drawn mainly from chemistry but the book is suited to a general scientific audience wanting to know more about how computers can help to understand and interpret science.

                Any choice with a significant impact on the environment should, in principle, be the outcome of a political process reflecting the social preferences of everyone involved. Unfortunately, this ideal procedure requires a level of time and money that does not justify its application for planning each specific intervention. Different methods, mainly derived from traditional investment analyses, have been proposed for providing a rational basis for environmental decisions that cannot be analysed through a public debate. These methods have proved inadequate, however, and are being replaced by Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as a less formal, but more applicable, method of incorporating environmental considerations in the decision process. Though the interpretation of EIA differs among various national and regional laws, it is now widely accepted as a potentially useful aid and is becoming a routine procedure for environmental planning and manag

                Book Description

                Modern computer-based control systems are able to collect a large amount of information, display it to operators and store it in databases but the interpretation of the data and the subsequent decision making relies mainly on operators with little computer support. This book introduces developments in automatic analysis and interpretation of process-operational data both in real-time and over the operational history, and describes new concepts and methodologies for developing intelligent, state-space-based systems for process monitoring, control and diagnosis.

                The book brings together new methods and algorithms from process monitoring and control, data mining and knowledge discovery, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and causal relationship discovery, as well as signal processing. It also provides a framework for integrating plant operators and supervisors into the design of process monitoring and control systems.

                The topics covered include:

                • a fresh look at current systems for process monitoring, control and diagnosis;

                • a framework for developing intelligent, state-space-based systems;

                • a review of data mining and knowledge discovery;

                • data preprocessing for feature extraction, dimension reduction, noise removal and concept formation;

                • multivariate statistical analysis for process monitoring and control;

                • supervised and unsupervised methods for operational state identification;

                • variable causal relationship discovery in graphical models and production rules;

                • software sensor design;

                • historical data analysis;

                Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery for Process Monitoring and Control is important reading for researchers and graduate students in process control and data and knowledge engineering. Control and process engineers should also find this book of value.

                4 out of 5 stars A good book in term of theory, a collage for practitioners!.......2000-05-21

                Enter,at last, Data Mining in the field of process control. This book by Prof.Wang although considers data mining- its utility and issues at length, stops short of giving insight into the implementation details. No doubt, the author has cited instances to put through the basic ideas, but is not able to generate the kind of enthusiasm that will see process engineers(or any enthusiast) advocate for and apply data mining in their capacities. The academia will be very pleased, the consultants will appreciate the application, but process enginneers- who comprise a big chunk of the target audience, will unfortunately remain confused on the efficiency of the tool on hand! Nevertheless, the author gives a comprehensive coverage of data mining techniques. However, in the current scenario, where it's the implementation of ideas, not just the ideas, that sell, I would believe this monograph comes out as a very well compiled book in terms of theoretical knowledge, but will appear like a collage to the practitioners-punters in the industry! Sorry Prof.Wang, but congratulations all the same!

                Still no breakthroughs. The book's collection of research papers is of good quality. The topics span automatic speech recognition, neural networks, expert systems and other AI topics. What is qualitatively new, compared to a decade earlier, is the inclusion of papers on Internet/Web applications.

                The overall impression is one of incremental advances. The applications described by the papers are worthy, and complex. B But there still appears to be no fundamental advance in what might be considered to be true AI.

                  A god-send "map" of sorts through the galaxy of characters and events in Murasaki Shikibu's "The Tale of Genji." I only wish Puette had continued with detailed reviews after Chapter 9. Otherwise, an exellent guide to a wonderful, absorbing novel.

                  I've read all of Murakami's fiction that has been released in english, so i am interested in anything that analyzes his fiction. This little 96 page book does quite a good job. It starts off with a short itroduction about Murakami himself. It is pretty short, and many fans would probably like to know more about Murakami, but it does help the reader to understand better from where Murakami is coming from and how his own personality is put into his characters. The second part of the book takes up many themes such as sexuality and violence. It gives the reader a higher understanding of Murakami's characters, and gives the reader an insight of what aspects that each character represents. The third part of the book is about the reception of the book in japan and in the rest of the world. This is a nice little book for a Murakami fan to read after he or she has finished reading _the wind-up bird chronicle_

                  4 out of 5 stars a great companion piece..........2002-02-26

                  This series of books are not intended to be definitive guides (at under 100 pages how could they be) but are put together nicely as further reading for fans of the works they cover.

                  WUBC is one of my favourite books and this guide contains a great deal of interesting information and analysis on the novel. There are some fascinating quotes from Murakami himself and a number of interesting angles on the reading of the text.

                  It took just one train journey to read and I enjoyed it a great deal. Highly recommended for fans of Murakami.

                  5 out of 5 stars perfect for fans.......2002-02-05

                  OK, I should admit straight up that I'm biased - The Wind-up Bird is my favourite novel. So I'm hardly able to give this guidebook a neutral, detached review. In fact, I'm amazed that someone has published this - are there enough of us fanatics to make this kind of thing profitable?? I hope so, as I see that Mr Strecher has another book coming out shortly! Anyhow, this is a great place to start. It was good to read about Murakami's views on other Japanese writers, his student days, and his falling into a ditch at the age of three. If you've read the novel, that explains a lot! I thought that Strecher's analysis of the novel was wonderfully accurate, although as he admits himself, he has only scratched the surface of it. Especially fascinating was the section about the reviews the novel received - astonishing how many of these missed the point. In short, if you love this novel then I think you'll like this book. And if you haven't read this novel, please go and read it. Now.

                  This is the third such guide to have been published about Guterson's novel - and easily the best. (It's a novel that I've taught since 1997.) It's not perfect but there is plenty of good material in here to get students thinking - Haytock is particularly eloqunent on Guterson's narrative technique. And she also provides the best novel/movie comparison that I've read so far.

                  Book Description

                  Familiarly known as "Rimer's Guide" since its publication in 1988, A Reader's Guide to Japanese Literature by J. Thomas Rimer has now been expanded and updated, keeping it abreast of the latest developments in Japanese literature. The specific aim of the guide is to introduce newcomers to individual literary works in such a way that they can judge for themselves what suits their tastes. Its broader aim is enjoyment--the enjoyment that comes from reading a good book. In keeping with that broader aim, Rimer's Guide is enjoyable to read in its own right, making it the perfect guide for readers who enjoy reading about literary masterpieces.

                  Rimer's Guide begins in the eighth century and ends in the 1990s. Readers who read from beginning to end will gain a good overview of Japanese literature through their encounters with the individual books that comprise the guide. Those who wish to skip here and there, searching for the book meant especially for them, may do so with impunity. In either case, readers will come across a tremendous variety of literary styles and types: diaries, poetry, plays, essays, short stories, and novels. There are works of great subtlety, works that are boldly drawn, religious works, and secular works. There is something to suit every taste.

                  Newly added to the original edition's twenty classical and thirty modern works are several new chapters. "After Oe," which covers younger contemporary writers coming after the 1994 Nobel Prize winner Kenzaburo Oe, includes such writers as Haruki Murakami, Ryu Murakami, and Banana Yoshimoto. "Some New Translations'' presents translations of both classic and postwar works and writers who were discussed in the first edition but who are now represented by additional translations. "Another Classical Master. Buson" is a short chapter devoted to a newly translated volume of poetry by the haiku master Buson. "More Modern Masters" cites recently published translations of postwar writers who were not represented in the first edition because translations of their works were not yet available. "The Art of the Essay" comments on the few examples of this important genre that now exist in English translation. The guide ends with a substantial list of further readings for those who would like to pursue their studies in greater depth.

                  Rimer's Guide thus continues to present Japanese literature in a most accessible manner, both fun to read in itself and rewarding in the suggestions it gives for more pleasurable reading in the days and years ahead.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great book to build a reading list.......2007-01-11

                  The book has been indispensible in creating a reading list for Japanese Literature. Where to start in such a foreign genre? Why not a list of classic authors, modern authors and current authors, with recommended translations? The book delivers on it's goal.

                  The only knock - there's a heavy emphasis on poetry, which is not my cup of ocha. But I could spend a dozen years reading the rest of Mr. Rimer's recommendations. No other book like it! Do get the current edition as the state of the art in translations has advanced remarkably since the 1988 original.

                  5 out of 5 stars INDISPENSIBLE GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS.......2001-07-02

                  Afraid to make your first foray into the magical and majestical world of Japanese literature? Then here is a perfect introduction for you. Within this slim volume numerous wonderful recommendations abound, although there is one small oversight -- "Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa isn't mentioned. Ah well. Also look into, "The Pleasures of Japanese Literature," by Donald Keene. And for lovers of poetry, I cannot say enough wonderful things about, "The Ink Dark Moon," translated by Jane Hirshfield, and "Modern Japanese Tanka" by Makoto Ueda.
