Overview.......2004-02-20
I approached this book after taking an introductory course in biology and an introductory course in botany. If I had not taken the botany course, I think this book would have been very difficult slogging indeed, since readers are assumed from the start to have a firm grasp of the life cycles of organisms that use spores for reproduction. I found the section on hyphae particularly illuminating compared to other material that I have read about mycology- -before reading this book, I thought the hyphae were simply mysterious tubes or filaments that fungi used for some unknown purpose. On the other hand, the section in this book on the mycelium left me scratching my head. Many other sections weren't exactly beginner friendly; for example, there is very little in-text explanation of terminology. If a term is unfamiliar, students are presumably expected to look it up in the glossary or use some other resource- -or else they should approach the text with a few more botany or mycology courses under their belts than I had. Overall, I think the book might be a good choice for a concise review of the mycology field; it might also be a good source for dipping in to for readings on specific topics like hyphae. But there are a number of alternative textbooks that might be better choices for a general introduction to mycology.

Computational Stochastic Mechanics in a Meta-Computing Perspective
ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 8489925046 |
Product Description
Computational Stochastic Mechanics (CSM) may be clearly identified as a new and strong trend in modern Structural Analysis. Due to the advent of accessible High Performance Computing technology, CSM is migrating from the academic community to the industry. Monte Carlo methods in particular, due to their generality and intrinsic parallelism, are establishing new standards and breaking new grounds in modern engineering practice. Although the Monte Carlo methods date back to the forties, their industrial applicability is becoming viable nearly half a century later thanks to supercomputing technology. Meta-Computing constitutes the ideal and natural platform for Monte Carlo-based CSM. Meta-Computers, i.e. agglomerates of networked computers, provide formidable computing power that may be easily harnessed by Monte Carlo-type applications. The PROMENVIR system, developed by an international R&D Consortium with financial support of the European Commission, offers a unique industrial platform for CSM applications of high industrial relevance. This book gathers extended versions of selected papers presented at the First International Workshop on Stochastic Mechanics in the industry celebrated on the 5-6th March, 1997 in Turin, Italy. The selected papers provide a general overview of the main industrial applications that Monte Carlo techniques enable to attack with considerable success. These range from automative crash to satellite dynamics, from stochastic multi-physics to multi-scale problems. A chapter on the basic theoretical aspects of Monte Carlo Methods closes the book and turns it into a self-contained text on the industrial applicability of computational stochastic mechanics.

Fuzzy Randomness: Uncertainty in Civil Engineering and Computational Mechanics (Engineering Online Library)
Bernd Möller , and Michael Beer Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540402942 |
Book Description
The subject of the book is the comprehensive consideration of uncertainty in the numerical analysis, the safety assessment, and the design of structures. Stochastic as well as non-stochastic uncertainty is treated on the basis of the superordinated uncertainty model fuzzy randomness. This new uncertainty model contains the special cases of real valued random variables and fuzzy variables and permits to take account of both uncertainty characteristics simultaneously. The book introduces to the problem of uncertainty and provides a current survey of relevant uncertainty models and their application in civil engineering. The necessary, special mathematical basics of the fuzzy set theory and the theory of fuzzy random variables are explained in an engineering manner and illustrated by way of examples. Basic ideas and methods for appropriately quantifying uncertain structural parameters are presented and demonstrated by means of characteristic examples. For processing uncertainty in structural analysis, safety assessment, and structural design completely new algorithms are introduced and described in detail as fuzzy structural analysis, fuzzy probabilistic safety assessment, and fuzzy cluster design. The application of the new methods is demonstrated for selected examples from civil engineering, their essential advantages are emphasized. For the first time this represents a coherent, overall concept for considering uncertainty in civil engineering.
The book in particular addresses to civil engineers and requires a university degree as well as basic knowledge in stochastics. But also for mechanical engineers, colleagues from applied mathematics, and other people who are interested in uncertainty problems the book represents a suitable introduction to the problem of uncertainty modeling and provides general solutions and algorithms, which may also be applied to problems from other fields beyond engineering.

Uncertainty Assessment of Large Finite Element Systems (Lecture Notes in Applied and Computational Mechanics)
Christian A. Schenk , and Gerhart I. Schuëller Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540253432 |
Book Description
The treatment of uncertainties in the analysis of engineering structures remains one of the premium challenges in modern structural mechanics. It is only in recent years that the developments in stochastic and deterministic computational mechanics began to be synchronized. To foster these developments, novel computational procedures for the uncertainty assessment of large finite element systems are presented in this monograph. The stochastic input is modeled by the so-called Karhunen-Loève expansion, which is formulated in this context both for scalar and vector stochastic processes as well as for random fields. Particularly for strongly non-linear structures and systems the direct Monte Carlo simulation technique has proven to be most advantageous as method of solution. The capabilities of the developed procedures are demonstrated by showing some practical applications.
