Look at the pictures; Don't bother with the text........2002-10-08
This book has a series of drawing and painting projects in different media done by different artists, step by step. These are immensely helpful to me, as I get a lot out of watching other artists work.
The author, however, makes a pretense of "teaching" things about media and art in this book, but really, adds nothing to the learning process at all. He makes sweeping generalizations about art, without explanation. (e.g., "I tell my students to work in terms of the media." What does that mean??) He criticizes the artists' work without offering any analysis or alternatives, which might be helpful. (e.g., "This works well in terms of the color.") And above all, the arrogance in his critiquing tone is offensive.
On the whole, the author could be removed entirely from this book, and it would be more helpful. The photography is lovely. I like the book--I just don't read the text anymore.
Follow along with the author from pencil to oils.......1999-07-25
After finding this in the library, I want to have this book for myself. As a person getting back into my artwork, I enjoy the author's use of other artists to demonstrate each lesson. Want a concise explanation of working in a variety of media from pencils, pastels, watercolors and oils? Then get this book. Seeing the four or so artists approach to each lesson is a reminder that each one of us has our own style. There isn't one "right" way to depict a landscape, a portrait or a city scene. As the reader turns each page, he/she will find themselves chomping at the bit to get pencil, charcoal or paintbrush in hand.

THE CHILDREN ART BOOK I WAS LOOKING FOR!.......2007-09-16
THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! FULL OF GREAT ART IDEAS AND COMPLETE PROJECTS. VERY WELL ILLUSTRATED (ALL THE PAGES ARE IN FULL-COLOR) AND EASY TO READ. THE DIRECTIONS ARE CLEAR AND YOU CAN DESIGN YOUR OWN VERSION OF THE PROJECTS. MY DAUGHTER LOVES THIS BOOK AND I REALLY LOVE HER LITTLE "WOW!" FACE AFTER EACH PROJECT.
Excellent!!!.......2007-07-31
This is an excellent book. I first checked it out from the library & then HAD to buy my own copy. It has great techniques; many of which I've seen illustrated in adult painting/crafting books too. This book is leaps & bounds beyond most of the "same old, same old" kids art books out there.
It's not another cut and paste craft book.......2007-07-22
The book is not about crafts, real art techniques are explained. Techniques that can be learned and used later for their own projects. The book explains colors and mixing, and also describes various art supplies. A real artist could bud out from this book, or at least a love of art.
Every grandparent should own a copy..........2007-07-12
This is a wonderful art projects book that is filled with easy to do creative activities - it's written in a non-patronizing way (you gotta love those Brits) - most of the materials needed are generally already in one's home and - the results are spectacular. My 10-year old grand-daughter was completely caught up and spent hours producing rather wonderful "masterpieces". I highly recommend to parents and grandparents.
fun, creative art ideas.......2006-10-07
First, since there is little information about this title on Amazon, I'll give some information.
This book is actually three complete books in one: The Usborne Book of Art Ideas, The Usborne Book of Art Skills, and the Usborne Book of Art Projects.
The front book cover says: "Over 400 inspiring ideas for things to do with paints, pastels, collage, crayons, inks, paper, pens, found objects, stitches, rubbings."
The back cover says: "This inspiring book is packed full of creative ideas. It shows exciting ways of using different art materials. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions exactly or use the ideas to create pictures of your own."
There are hundreds of art projects in here, using a wide variety of different media. I love that while many of the art projects are fairly specific, they are really jumping off points, ways of experimenting with the different media and ideas so you can move off with them in your own direction. I am a homeschooling mother of two elementary-aged children, and this book has been very inspiring to the three of us.

Wyland Paint Kit.......2007-01-10
My 8 year old granddaughter did very well with the drawing part. She still does not seem to be interested in the painting yet. I think 8 years old is a little young for most for this type of kit. They are still in the watercolor stage, which for them is easier.
Great for Kids.......2003-05-25
Although I am 25 years old, I bought this book because I love Wyland's work and was curious about how he drew his sea creatures. It came with brushes, some acrylic paints, drawing paper, pencils, and a book giving instruction on how to draw and paint (all in a hard cover folder). It is definetly worth the price and would be a great start up book for kids interested in sea art.
Book Description
“One of the best books of its kind, and at a good price. Hamilton...starts with the bare essentials of sketching and then builds the student’s confidence by advancing through exercises in lighting, perspective, and still lifes and on to larger outdoor scenes.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
A good little book..........2004-08-06
This was a great "over-the-shoulder" sketchbook that held my interest throughout. I loved the writer's conversational style, and he was able to demonstrate many techniques and encourage me to begin humbly with my sketching. I thought it was well worth the money, if for no other reason than the shading information.
ABSOLUTELY UNINSPIRING AND DULL.......2003-12-28
The sketches given as examples are of very poor quality, the selection of themes is random and unorganized, nothing is explained to the fullest, instruction is vague, + there is no tips on composition.
In short: another of these books that go step 1), step 2) and poof the drawing is finished without the instructor spelling out steps 3,4,5,6.
The selection of drawing subjects is extremely restrictive or the author just lacked inspiration; it's just draw a little of this, than a little of that, with no finishing techniques and no idea on how to group the objects.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
There are plenty of better books, such as from Ernest Watson, Ferdinand Petrie, Wendon Blake and more (even if those guys are oldies; they remain goodies)
Beautiful sketches I still wish I could master.......2002-10-06
This book is a pleasantly composed item with very beautiful sketches. The author gives very good information and examples on materials and techniques used, and it is clear that this book helped me, but only a little....
I loved the fact that it was not overpowered with text and I would probably be able to copy the sketches in the book fairly well. Unfortunately I don't think this book helped me produce my own sketches from my personal observations. I thnk it is too advanced for the first-time drawer, or the drawer with a minimum of skill and even less confidence...
Not for Beginners.......2001-09-09
Beginners won't really benefit from this book. The author's vague description of perspective confuses rather than explains. The book resembles a sketchbook with some notes dropped into it. I would recommend The Art of Drawing and Pencil Drawing Techniques over this thing anyday.
The Complete Sketching Book.......2001-08-15
I found This book very helpful. I needed some help with shading and found the help I needed

Book Description
Elaine Benson, a successful novelist who let love in the person of an unreliable screenwriter jettison her career, is now divorced, broke, and come to a "primitive, untamed northern forest" on Lake Muskoka to interview for a job. Elderly Miss Moira Madison of the fabulously rich Canadian family wishes to write her memoirs.
Miss Madison isn't interested in a bestseller. She wants to leave a record of her life and most specifically of her years with the Canadian Army Nursing Sisters of World War II. Her service in the British and then European theater was filled with triumphs and bitter losses and forever shaped her life. Can Elaine tell her story working with decades of old documents?
Settling into the family "cottage" and what remains of a lifestyle long gone, Elaine reconnects with her love of researching the past. But somehow her project--she soon discovers the first writer hired oddly drowned in the Lake--stirs someone to murder. . . .

It's refreshing to see a sleuth story based around a character who doesn't professionally sleuth........2006-11-05
Vicki Delany's BURDEN OF MEMORY presents Elaine, a successful novelist who has failed in the uncertain world of a screenwriter's career and is now interviewing for a job in a remote rural area with an elderly rich woman who needs a writer to help her with her memoirs. It's not until she's hired that Elaine discovers the writer before her died a mysterious death: a death she too may be facing because of her position. It's refreshing to see a sleuth story based around a character who doesn't professionally sleuth.
A very good stand-alone from Ms. Delany........2006-09-29
Elaine Benson is picking up the pieces of her professional life by helping the rich, elderly, and very independent Moira Madison write her memoirs. Elaine is getting over a husband who left her for a bimbo, after convincing her to give up her own career as a historian in favor of his career as a possible screenwriter.
Moira Madison wants to write mostly about her experiences as A Canadian Army Nursing Sister in World War II, and then her experiences around the world after the War. BURDEN OF MEMORY switches back and forth between present day Canada on Lake Muskoka and Moira's various experiences in England, Africa, and Italy. It will come as no surprise to the average reader that events from the past will not stay there, and the repercussions will come close to destroying Moira's extended family.
One of Delany's skills lies in her writings about setting, about place. Her love of the more untamed areas of Canada shines throughout BURDEN, and she can bring the heat of northern Africa off the page just as eloquently. Delany's characters are very believable; she knows, or seems to know, so much about the mindset of the truly wealthy. Their seeming invulnerability to the harsh realities the rest of the world must deal with is clearly played out for us.
BURDEN OF MEMORY is Delany's second novel; this is not a series. Read this, and you'll likely want to track down SCARE THE LIGHT AWAY. Delany's sophomore effort is well done, and leaves no doubt about her talents as a mystery writer.
interesting Canadian amateur sleuth thriller .......2006-07-05
Elaine Benson wrote two highly regarded biographies of pioneer Canadian women when she fell in love and married. Her husband persuaded her that the money is in screenplays so they teamed up with Elaine doing the research. However, Elaine obtained a divorce and left Hollywood for Toronto and applied for the job of writing the true story of wealthy elderly Miss Moira Madison. She obtains the position, but learns that Donna Smithton had the job for one week before accidentally drowning in nearby Lake Muskoka.
Moira, as she prefers to be called, fears that the talented Elaine will uncover family secrets from the war days that she does not want revealed. Instead Moira prefers most of the bio to be concentrated on her work with the Canadian Army Nursing Sisters of World War II. However, Elaine, who moves into a nearby cottage, begins to uncover questions that link the so called accidental drowning by Donna to events during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Someone will kill to insure that certain secrets remain buried. She wonders if the man she recently met in Moira's home and is half in love with, Alan Manners, is behind the attempts to keep secrets hidden.
This is an interesting Canadian amateur sleuth thriller that works because Elaine is believable as she has the skills to analyze documents and uncover secrets. Her inquiries start off innocently but as she begins to comprehend what she is digging up, danger mounts and she ponders who to trust including those she cares about like her client and Alan. BURDEN OF MEMORY uses some flashbacks to tell the backdrop WWII story, but whether it is past or present Vicki Delaney provides a wonderful cozy.

This excellent two-volume set by noted historian Richard Tatley won the American Association for State and Local History Best Regional Book Award. In Muskoka, these books are the steamboat bibles. A must for any collector.

.The area is Muskoka. No such thing as The Muskokas.......2001-02-27
This area of Ontario name is derived from an Indian Chief. There was only one person so the name can not carry an s. He was a wonderful person and deserves to be honoured. He taught many pioneers how to live in their new home area. Media has sadly slipped into the error of calling the area The Muskokas. It is wrong. Please continue to call it by its correct name. It is Muskoka. Thank you.
A Difinitive Work.......1999-07-16
This volume explains the colorful history of the steamboat era in the Muskoka region in Ontario from the turn of the century until the last steamboat tied up for the last time in 1958. There are also descriptions and photographs of the many luxury hotels that lined the lake shores and were served by the steamers. The final chapter describes the Segwun, built in 1887 and the lone survivor of the steamboat era, tied up at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst as a floating museum, rotting away day by day and how, what started out to be only simple repairs just to keep her afloat, turned into a full-fledged restoration project and eventual return to service. Today, she proudly steams on three lakes as the only coal-fired passenger steamer in Canada and the oldest engine-powered vessel in North America. No maritime liberary is complete without this book.

The Hour
Bernard DEVOTO
Manufacturer: Houghton Mifflin
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000EHJF7S |
Product Description
A master of the intoxicating phrase Bernard De VOTO writes of the cultural importance of hard liquor and the only hour- the cocktail hour.
Amazon.com
Like many U.S. historians, cultural critic Bernard DeVoto believed that the American character was rooted in the experience of westward expansion. Unlike those who championed the civilizing graces of the agrarian frontier, however, DeVoto drew inspiration from the mercenary, imperial designs of the fur trade. Originally published in 1947, Across the Wide Missouriis arguably the best known of his studies in American history, examining the rise and fall of the U.S. fur dynasties in the 1830s. The book chronicles the competition between John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company and the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, an "opposition" group of trappers (including Jim Bridger and Kit Carson) descended from the earlier entrepreneurial activities of General William H. Ashley. Devoto specifically narrates the major expeditions and the daily experiences of the Western divisions of these companies, which scoured the northernmost regions of the Rocky Mountains for beaver. He contends that, by exploring the recently charted Northern plateau, fighting off interlopers, and setting up trade networks, the loose confederation of trappers, traders, and Native Americans shaped the materialism that typifies modern American society. In his densely detailed description of the company "rendezvous," DeVoto shows how the activities of trading, partying, and resource pooling created a shared experience for competing cultural and economic parties on the frontier. While the centrality of the fur trade in the development of the American character may strike some readers as overemphasized, DeVoto's thesis still carries much relevance for modern American studies. --John M. Anderson
Book Description
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize. Across the Wide Missouri tells the compelling story of the climax and decline of the Rocky Mountain fur trade during the 1830s. More than a history, it portrays the mountain fur trade as a way of business and a way of life, vividly illustrating how it shaped the expansion of the American West.

Real Mountain Man Book!!!.......2007-07-21
Living in Colorado, and having hiked and driven the western part of the United States, I think this book is great. It tells the story of Mountain Men and the areas they covered. The adventures they lived, and the skill it took to survive. What legends of the West!
NEEDS WORK.......2006-02-01
I AGREE W/NAICHE. AUTHOR HAS(HAD) GOOD COMMAND OF SUBJECT MATTER BUT PRESENTS IT IN A MADDENINGLY DISORGANIZED MANNER. POORLY INTRODUCED PERSONAGES & EVENTS SEGUE THROUGH EACH CHAPTER NOT TO BE ADEQUATELY DISCUSSED (IF AT ALL) UNTIL MANY PAGES LATER. I FOUND MYSELF FLIPPING AHEAD & BACK IN FRUSTRATION TRYING TO MAINTAIN CONTINUITY. MR. DeVOTO SEEMS MORE CONCERNED WITH DEMONSTRATING HIS LITERARY WIT THAN CLEARLY PRESENTING HIS SUBJECT MATTER. I FOUND ROBERT UTLEY'S "A LIFE WILD AND PERILOUS" FAR EASIER TO READ & LEARN FROM.
Wagh!.......2005-06-28
Across the Wide Missouri
Mr. DeVoto has a passion for this subject and a passion for the characters that live in it.
Here are some excerpts from the book:
"There were few delicate feeders in the mountains...The river tribes liked the green, putrid flesh of buffalo drowned while crossing the ice and hauled ashore weeks later, `so ripe, so tender, that very little boiling is required.' They ate the kidneys raw... the white man would eat the liver raw as soon as it was taken; he seasoned it with the gall or sometimes with gunpowder...he had no more tableware than his belt knife - gravy, juices and blood running down his face, forearms and shirt. He wolfed the meat and never reached repletion. Eight pounds a day was standard ration for Hudson Bay employees [but often eat twice that amount]...melted fat was gulped by the pint. Kidney fat could be drunk without limit...Hump and boss boil in a kettle, cracked marrow bones sizzle by the fire...Camp is pitched by a small creek or a rushing mountain river...Here is the winesap air of the high places, the clear, green sky of evening fading to a dark that brings the stars within arm's length, the cottonwoods along the creek rustling in the wind. The smell of meat has brought wolves and coyotes almost to the circle of firelight. They skulk just beyond it; sometimes a spurt of flame will turn will turn their eyes to gold...Horses and mules crop the bunch grass at the end of their lariats or browse on leaves along the creek. The firelight flares and fades in the wind's rhythm on the faces of men in whose minds are the vistas and the annuls of the entire West."
If you are yearning for a dry narrative of the fur trade, this is not your book. This book gives you a feel for the land and a feel for the kinds of men involved in the fur trade. It gives you a feel for the hardships that they faced, the cutthroat business practices of the trade and how instrumental these men were to opening up the west for settlement. He does not sanitize history or historical figures. He presents the good and the bad of both the individual fur traders and the various Indian tribes that were most closely linked to the fur trade.
As it turns out, this is not a simple story to tell or to organize into a linear narrative. There were many different characters and crosscurrents cutting through the entire period. He weaves this story together with the sinew provided by the movements of a few of the most important mountain men: Jim Bridger, Tom Fitzpatrick, Joe Meek, Bill and Milton Sublette and Kit Carson.
He runs another colorful thread through the story made of missionaries. These are clearly the most foolish, most spiteful and most disagreeable people in the narrative. Some of them are also the most well-intentioned and tragic characters in the grand story. Of the missionaries' desire to convert the Nez Perce and Flathead Indians to Christianity, he says, "[Nez Perce] were superior Indians, they made no trouble, they liked and admired white men...Their desire for instruction in the mysteries was genuine and paramount, as clean as the desire of these Christians to give them what they wanted. Both desires were simple and altogether hopeless...The Indians receiving instruction were men of the age of polished stone...They tried, both Indians and whites. There they stood, the seekers and the bearers of truth...the sincerity of these Indians' desire for religious instruction could not be doubted." And yet this first wave of missionaries met with frustration, failure and murder.
But the primary and repeated organizational thread that runs through this story is a fascinating and completely unlikely man named William Drummond Stewart. This man won the respect and deep friendship of all the great mountain men. He was kind, generous and good humored. Captain William Drummond Stewart of the British Army "was in his thirty-seventh year. He was the brother of Sir John Archibald Stewart, eighteenth of Grandtully and sixth baronet, and was next in succession to him...He went through the Hundred days with his regiment and fought at Waterloo." He traveled the prairies and the mountains in comfort, elegance and style. He was as tough, as adventurous and as skillful as any of the mountain men. Yet there was not even a hint of royal superiority about him.
Mr. DeVoto is a magnificent writer. If you are looking for an outstanding overview of the fur trade, this is your book. He also provides fascinating notes in the appendix and an extensive bibliography for those who are interested in further reading.
Great concept but poorly executed.......2005-03-21
DeVoto's biggest problem is the confusing manner in which he presents his story. There is a wealth of information in this book, but it will take a determined reader to decipher and translate just what DeVoto is trying to say and you just might find yourself re-reading paragraphs more often than not. I'm surprised his editor didn't force a rewrite. Fur trade novice's beware, this book is for those with more than a passing interest in the topic. But again, there is a wealth of information here if you have the time and patience to give this book.
Opinionated Author Clouds Some Good History.......2004-07-01
DeVoto's "Across the Wide Missiouri" is good history in search of an even better editor.
I learned some valuable things about the Sioux migration, trading between tribes on the plains and White/Indian ecomomic relationships of the fur trade, but DeVoto is too front and center. He jumps back and forward of the period under study in the book and goes into what I can only describe as historical diatribes every once in a while.
The book is very readable in spite of these faults and his pictures of Whitman, Spaulding & company add real flesh to people that are often overlooked or treated as one demensional.
Two thoughts about editing: At the time "Missouri" was written, in the mid 40's, DeVoto was unquestionably the expert in the field and so he probably edited his own work. Not the best situation. Maybe he should have edited an updated edition of Chittenden's "The American Fur Trade of the Far West" instead and published a collection of historical essays on the period under his own name.
As someone interested in the west I am glad I read it but will only be recommending it to a select few and maybe only parts of the book to others.

ACROSS THE WIDE MISSOURI
In the summer of 1819, Alexander Campbell and his family and their servants, along with other travelers, departed from the comparative comfort of their home in Highland County, Virginia, to set forth on a pio¬neering trek to the wilderness country of the Missouri Territory. James Brown Campbell, the family's eldest son, then only twenty years of age, began keeping a diary of their journey, recounting their terrible hardships, both on the way and after arriving in the "Promised Land," plus a detailed account of his work surveying parts of Missouri Territory, and their final, excruciating trip back home in 1821, a trek that was forced to an abrupt halt by the sudden illness and poignant death of Campbell's mother near Paoli, Indiana.
Published for the first time ever, and meticulously edited by James's great-great-grandniece, Mary A. Burgess, this fascinating transcription includes a genealogical sketch of the Camp¬bell clan, a map of the Missouri Territory, and extensive name and place indexes. Not only illustrative of its period and the hardships endured by those who headed west into essentially unchartered land, this book provides a moving and thought-provoking account of life during America's pioneer days.
MARY A. BURGESS has contributed numerous essays on literature and history to a variety of reference publications; she has also edited or written twenty books. MICHAEL BURGESS is an emeritus professor in the California State University System.
