Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir
ASIN: 0520229614 |
Book Description
As old as a roadway that was once a Native trail, as new as the suburban subdivisions spreading across the American countryside, the cultural landscape is endlessly changing. The study of cultural landscapes--a far more recent development--has also undergone great changes, ever broadening, deepening, and refining our understanding of the intricate webs of social and ecological spaces that help to define human groups and their activities. Everyday America surveys the widening conceptions and applications of cultural landscape writing in the United States and, in doing so, offers a clear and compelling view of the state of cultural landscape studies today.
These essays--by distinguished journalists, historians, cultural geographers, architects, landscape architects, and planners--constitute a critical evaluation of the field's theoretical assumptions, and of the work of John Brinckerhoff Jackson, the pivotal figure in the emergence of cultural landscape studies. At the same time, they present exemplary studies of twentieth-century landscapes, from the turn-of-the-century American downtown to the corporate campus and the mini-mall. Assessing the field's accomplishments and shortcomings, offering insights into teaching the subject, and charting new directions for its future development, Everyday America is an eloquent statement of the meaning, value, and potential of the close study of human environments as they embody, reflect, and reveal American culture.
Customer Reviews:
Look out the window on road trips!! .......2006-03-05
J. B. Jackson's legacy lives on in geographers, historic preservationists and others, and is alive and well. This book is a great introduction to Jackson's lifelong study of the American landscape, including the modern, vernacular everyday things that many scholars ignore or criticize.
A variety of authors tell Jackson's story, and about how his influence has impacted their lives and careers. A must-read for cultural landscape students, historic preservationists, architectural historians, or anyone who appreciates a good road trip on the roads of the U.S... the ones travelled before the construction of the interstate highway system...
Everyday America / eds. Wilson and Groth.......2005-10-16
A collection of reflections on how to see, interpret, and appreciate the American cultural landscape. After reading this book the term "the middle of nowhere" will never leave your mouth or enter your thoughts. The front porch of the local house will be as interesting as Time's Square. Read this book and understand your ordinary environment. Not just for cultural geographers, but everyone with eyes or a heart for how we live and organize our spaces and places.

Book Description
An exquisitely illustrated book of watercolor paintings. Locales include Tuscany (Florence, and Siena), landscape panoramas from the region of Umbria, and intimate vignettes of Venice and other cities.
Mastery of the demanding techniques of fresh-air painting is demonstrated in over sixty works of extraordinary quality chosen from several hundred "études" executed during the last seven years.
The artist has been described as "a master of close harmonies who gives us a subtle yet strong evocation of hills and buildings, flowers and tables. She captures the essence of place or thing through her sure sense of scale and her skill at using color to indicate the quality of light and fullness of three-diminsional form." (Evan Maureer, Director of the Minneapolis Museum of Art)
The book includes two interpretive essays by Graham Smith and Marvin Eisenberg, authorities on the culture and art of late medieval and Renaissance Italy.
Mignonette Yin Cheng is Professor of Art, University of Michigan. She has been recognized with extensive regional, national, and international awards and exhibitions. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections.

London Sketchbook: A City Observed

Book Description
Venice is seen through the eyes of artist Fabrice Moireau, with sketches in watercolor and pencil. This resident of the world's most romantic city is the perfect guide to its streets, monuments, gardens and delightfully hidden corners.
Customer Reviews:
Un bel libro!.......2006-11-17
Having lived in Venice for five months, each scene in this book is the actualization of my own memories. I bought one book about Venice and gave it as a gift to my parents who were not there to see the city firsthand, and this book was it.
While not a travel guide or an in depth history book, this book does better than many others at capturing the light and true essence of Venice, the Serene Republic.
See Venice from a different perspective.......2006-05-27
I bought this book before I visited Venice last year and it proved to be a very effective way - together with my Dorling Kindersley Guide book (also recommended) - of creating a short-list of places to draw. Saved me hours of slogging round trying to find "that view"!
The drawings and watercolour sketches are extremely competent (if somewhat stylized) and give lots of inspiration for those working in watercolour of some the ways in which Venice can be portrayed.
Beautiful Book.......2006-02-25
A wonderful book for lovers of Venice and for those who would like to look at some of the incredible treasures of this magical, romantic city!
In Praise of Serenissima.......2005-01-02
Whether you have traveled to Venice and are already under its magnetic, elusive spell or whether you plan to visit...or even if your fantasy world includes bits of Serenissima, VENICE SKETCHBOOK is bound to please.
Artist Fabrice Moireau travels Europe with his sketchpad, rendering quick sketches in watercolor that capture the light and moment as reflected by the architecture of the place. This book is his prolonged visit to Venice and he has visited every island, canal, bridge, and hidden place that make this wonderfully decaying old Queen of the Adriatic a romantic paradise. His sketches are beautifully executed, not always with scholarly perspective, but capturing the Venetian light, an amalgamation of sun, water, fog, and mist, like few others have in this medium. Sensitive hand written notes on each page by the important 'models' make the sketches come even more alive.
The book is graced by a fine Introduction by Deborah Howard who teaches architectural history at Cambridge and has written extensively about the architecture of Venice, Veneto, and the Italian Renaissance. In her elegant writing she sets the mood for viewing the sketches with an abundant but concise discussion of the history of Venice.
The book is divided into sections of the city and writer Tudy Sammartini, who lives and works in Venice, opens each sector with fascinating comments about the history of the buildings, the churches, the monuments, and all the sights that sector holds. Her background in the history of her beloved Venice enhances the value of this book beyond the simple coffee table picture book. Her writing is warmly readable and very informed.
Marry the contributions of these three talented people and the result is a book that is not only visually attractive and lovingly published on 'watercolor paper', but is also an informative and meditative volume of praise for the city known as Serenissima. Grady Harp, January 2005
An enchanting book.......2004-12-29
This book was a gift from a close friend who knows I am planning my first trip to Venice this spring. I have been immersing myself in guides to Venice, and this book, with its charming and skillful watercolors and expert commentary, seems the perfect introduction to this fascinating city.
It is not a guidebook per se, more of an artistic appreciation. Many of the comments are in cursive writing, so it seems you are looking at a personal sketchbook with running comments. The watercolors convey the interplay of light and color better than any photographs I've seen.
This book is clearly a labor of love.
Book Description
In My Italian Sketchbook, 30-year-old artist Florine Asch follows the tradition of the 18th century Grand Tour, when writers, architects and members of European high-society embarked on long journeys around Italy, taking in key cultural sites, often sketching as they went.
Asch's sketches are full of character, light-hearted, spirited and bursting with charm. Her fresh approach leaves us full of respect for the classical wonders of Italy's art and architecture, but also opens our eyes to the equally delightful architecture of today's stores, the markets, and local life.
My Italian Sketchbook is a must-have for Italy lovers and all those who paint in watercolor or simply appreciate this delicate art.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful watercolors of glorious Italy!.......2007-06-17
I have loved Italy since I was a child, something about the people, the food, the great scenery, old, historic monuments, there is just so much to learn about and appreciate, and this wonderful gem of a sketchbook does just that. Florine Asch takes us on a Grand Tour of Italy which is brought to life by her amazing, beautiful, detailed watercolors - MIlan & the Lakes [also noteworthy are depictions of daily life like in the bustling markets], Verona, Venice, Florence, Rome [the Piazza Navona], the Bay of Naples & Sicily. It is a riot of color, a lush depiction of Italian life, and the beautiful rendering of the Italian countryside & cities. A wonderful addition to the Sketchbooks series [of which I am a collector].
Absolutely worth the money!.......2007-06-13
Usually, I simply rate items based on whether I like them or not, but Florine Asch's "My Italian Sketchbook" was worth the effort of a comment. I borrowed this book from the library and have now purchased this book because I was astounded by the beauty and volume of drawings in this Sketchbook.
The sketches are absolutely superb and nowhere close to being the rigid architecturally perfect "sketches" which I have seen in other books. Now I greatly respect the talent that it takes to do those other sketches but as a fellow watercolorist, I prefer the looser quality and nature of Ms. Asch's. Hopefully she has future holidays planned and thus future sketchbooks. As a side note, I would love to see the two sketchbooks relating to France (one in Paris and another in Alsace, I believe) of hers which seem to be very difficult to get here in the U.S. Highly recommend this book. It is beautiful and gives one a strong desire to travel!
More than 5 stars.......2006-02-01
Beautiful book. The artist makes even the most mundane object interesting. Inspiring for both the armchair traveler and aspiring artist. This is one fo the best in the "My X Sketchbook" series.
The Wonders Of Italy Gloriously Portrayed In Watercolors!.......2003-08-07
Florine Asch allows us to accompany her on a Grand Tour of Italy. She takes us along, at a leisurely pace, that does recall a time when travel was more about the journey than the destination. Dominique Fernandez, who writes the Introduction to "My Italian Sketchbook," tells us that "tourist" originally meant, "one who travels, not to arrive, but aimlessly, as the servant of beauty."
Ms. Asch's attachment to Italy is palpable in her glorious sketches, all executed in watercolor. Her elegant sketches, 100 of them, depict the known sites, and the scenes that are rarely seen by the hurried tourist. She captures a sunset view of Saint Peter's in Rome, the beauty of Lake Como, a Tuscan landscape, the medieval majesty of Sienna, the Renaissance glory of Firenze, the Duomo in Milan, a studio filled with Greek plaster figures, a horse and buggy by Rome's Trevi Fountain, the carnival in Venice, street scenes in Naples, a Sicilian piazza, and marketplace.
Florine Asch uniquely portrays the ordinary and extraordinary vistas, and views, of Italy. My tourist photographs never looked like this. A wonderful book to keep as a remembrance, or to give as a gift. Anyone who loves all things Italian, will love this book. I certainly do!

Book Description
The first volume to appear in the Natural History series catalogues a group of spectacular drawings of citrus fruit in watercolour and gouache, most of which were commissioned to illustrate Giovanni Battista Ferrari's Hesperides, an ambitious attempt at a complete taxonomy and classification of the entire citrolgical world, which was published in Rome in 1646. Cassiano dal Pozzo played a fundamental role in this project: it was he who commissioned and supplied most of the drawings and then arranged for them to be engraved for Ferrari's projected work. The citrus drawings - grouped in the Catalogue under the headings of citrons, lemons, oranges, pummelos, hybrids, monstro- sities and unidentified citrus fruit - are reproduced in full colour and are accompanied by a wealth of comparative material which includes the Hesperides engravings, additional drawings and photographs of actual specimens, mainly of the monstrous kind. In addition to detailed scientific descriptions of the specimens themselves, the catalogue also gives art historical information on watermarks, annotations, types of mount, provenance and literature. The introductory essays explain Cassiano's method of gathering information from a network of correspondents around Europe and consider the relationship between these drawings and other natural history subjects commissioned by Cassiano. The authors discuss the work of the artists involved in the project and assess the major contribution made the classification of citrus fruit by the collaborative efforts of Cassiano of Ferrari. 282 illustrations of which 116 are in color.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-06-01
My son loves this book and I enjoy reading it to him. The pictures are great and I love the little story to read along with the pictures. My son has enjoyed reading this book over and over again. The pitures are much better than some of the other baby faces books I have bought.
A Favorite.......2007-05-15
This was one of my daughter's favorite books from about 18 months-2 yrs. She memorized the short sentences based on the pictures. It was too cute when she would read it to us before bedtime.
Good beginner book for babies 4 months and younger.......2006-03-16
My 2 month old daughter liked looking at the black and white photos of the babies. Young babies top two things to look at are black and white pictures/patterns and pictures of faces. This book has put the two together. Recommended to buy for those who are pregnant or have a young child.
Our Baby Loves this Book.......2005-10-30
I brought this book back from the library to read for our then 10 month old. After about two - three reads of the book she loved it. It is a great book to read to your baby as the words are simple, strong, and follow a lovely rhyming pattern eg "baby happy, baby sad, baby good, baby bad." The pictures are all of young babies and the book is very easy and sturdy for our baby to turn the pages herself while I read to her. At other times she reads the book herself, turning the pages and looking at the pictures. She loves the last page with the mirror, looks into it, and kisses it. Although I am getting sick of reading this book our daughter certainly isn't it and it is now 3 months on. In summary rhyming is good, pictures good, nice and simple, easy to turn pages a winner in our family.
review.......2005-08-22
I thought my daughter would love looking at this book since she loves to look at other babies; however, the photos are very muddy. I wish they were more crisp with definite black and white colors instead of lots of grey tones. Some of the captions that go along with the photos are misleading if you are teaching your baby feelings and actions, i.e "baby bad" is smiling so that might elude your child to think it is ok to play with flour. Not the best, but she will pick it up to look at the photos.

Special for being you.......2004-06-27
You don't have to be an infant to love this book, as becomes clear from the delight it gives one 12-year old we know and love. But there's something very fetching about infants, even for kids bordering on adolescence.
In this case, the book may operate as something of a replacement for baby pictures that don't exist, since the child was adopted well past toddler-hood.
But the 28 pages of huge black and white photographs of infants are also in themselves a great draw, what with feet, hands, faces, and bare bottoms all thrown together with a 65-word poem, and a full-page mirror for the baby (or child) to see himself.
For infants and older kids, the message is terrific: you're special for being you.
--Alyssa A. Lappen
My 11 month old loves this book.......2001-04-25
This has been my daughter's favorite book for the last month, and there is no sign of it ending. She will search through her shelf of books and somehow find this one to pull out. And I'm going to give away the ending... It has a really nice mirror on the last page - she loves to stare at herself and then flip back through the pages to the other babies. She loves it so much that I am about to buy a second one - a couple of the pages are already tearing! A must have!
A wonderful book for all children........1998-07-31
This beautiful, rythmic book is perfect for a child of any age. My son fell in love with it when he was only 4 months old. He still reads it daily. This book is a treasure!
Every child from infant to emergent reader will love it!!.......1998-06-24
We have had this book from infancy, Quinn is now two years old and still requests the "baby book". The rhymes, multicultural pictures, and surprise at the end make this an enjoyable book for us all to read. This has become our standard baby gift and is much loved by all who recieve it.
A must have for all parents of 12-24 month babies.......1997-12-10
I bought this book second hand and it was my sons favorite for almost a year. I loaned it two a neighbor and her daughter was almost inseparable from it. My daughter (12 months) has just started it and I see her face glow with each new page.
