    Book Description

One of the major innovations of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is the incorporation of local and regional assessmentsù33 in allùin a global portrait of the planetÆs health. It is the first global assessment of ecosystems to include not only a diversity of ecosystems, but to draw on a wide range of cultural orientations and intellectual traditions, including those of indigenous peoples.

The Sub-global Assessments Working Group integrated information from multiple sources and found that biophysical factors such as land-use change, climate change and variability, pollution, and invasive species have a significant effect on human well-being across cultures. For example, in places where there are no other social safety nets, diminished human well-being tends to increase immediate dependence on ecosystem services, which can damage the capacity of those local ecosystems, which in turn appears to increase the probability of natural disaster or conflict.

Representing the baseline and framework for ongoing assessments of ecosystem and human well-being on a variety of scales around the world, Multiscale Assessments provides students, researchers, and policy-makers with the most comprehensive methodology for assessing ecosystems at local, national, and regional scales.

    Book Description

The survival of the Earth’s biological resources is under threat from rapidly expanding human populations that are degrading the environment at an accelerating rate. Despite the increased awareness of the importance of biological diversity, the scientific foundations on which to plan conservation and development policies are still being developed. The Global Biodiversity Assessment represents an unparalleled attempt to provide an independent scientific analysis of the current issues. It assesses the present state of knowledge, identifies gaps in understanding and draws attention to those issues where scientists have reached a consensus as well as those where uncertainty has led to conflicting viewpoints and a need for further research. The Assessment provides an unprecedented source of information for decision-makers, officials, scientists and others interested in the future of the planet.

A useful textbook for students, scientists and policy makers. The information is extensive and detailed in a logical fashion, taking the reader from the basics of biodiversity through to human influences, economic values and conservation.

      Book Description

This book is the result of the first global conference on mountain biodiversity, and is a contribution to the International Year of Mountains, 2002. The Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment program is a Special Target Area Region project of DIVERSITAS (UNESCO and UNEP). Biological diversity is essential for the integrity of mountain ecosystems and this dependency is likely to increase as environmental (climate) and social conditions change. Steep terrain and climate, and severe land-use pressure cause mountain ecosystems to rank among the world's most endangered landscapes. The 28 chapters in this book represent research on the biological riches in all major mountain ranges of the world, and synthesize existing knowledge on mountain biodiversity - from diversity of bacteria, plants and animals to human diversity. The book is divided into five sections: an introduction providing an overview of the issues; plant and animal diversity; climate change and mountain biodiversity; land use and conservation; and a synthesis.

          Description:
With the use of goals from the Convention on Biological Diversity we evaluated two climate stabilisation profiles on their merits for conservation of biodiversity, comparing them with a baseline profile. Focusing on plant ecosystems at the pan-European level, we concluded that although a maximum global-mean temperature increase of 2^oC is likely to be met in a 550ppmv CO"2-equivalent stabilisation profile, large areas of ecosystems in Europe will be affected. Most of the impacts manifest themselves in northern countries, with a high net increase of plant species, and in Mediterranean countries, with a decrease in the number of plant species and stable area. Other impacts are less robust, given the regional variation in climate results for different climate models.

5 out of 5 stars Having Fun Learning Fractions.......2002-02-09

Fraction Jugglers is the best book we have ever seen to help kids (and adults!) learn how to use fractions. It starts from the very beginning (naming fractions) and gradually teaches everything you need to know. The illustrations are cute, the text is easy to understand, and the games are fun. We watched children laughing and excited to play as they were competing to see who would win the most cards. Meanwhile they were figuring out equivalent fractions without even realizing it. Definitely a great book. The fraction cards and fraction chart that come with the book are very helpful.

                  Book Description

In their series of professional books for teachers, Young Mathematicians at Work, Catherine Twomey Fosnot and Maarten Dolk described Mathematics in the City, an innovative project where teachers helped young children construct a deep understanding of number and operation in a math-workshop environment. Now they and two colleagues from the project have developed a flexible, video-based, digital context for inquiry into the teaching and learning of mathematics that will change how professional development is conducted.

Designed for you, the workshop leader or college instructor, the Working with the Ratio Table Resource Package enables your in- or preservice teachers to not only watch but interact with video that depicts classroom teachers as they listen to, question, and interpret students' thinking; develop connections between mathematical ideas and strategies; and, ultimately, develop vibrant mathematical communities in their classrooms.

The Resource Package includes three valuable components: In Working with the Ratio Table, your workshop participants will observe sixth graders as they construct some of the big ideas related to fractions, making connections between ratios and equivalence and uncovering landmark division strategies like comparison through common denominators. By studying the use of carefully crafted problems designed both to generate a range of solution strategies and to highlight the power of ratio tables and other models for division, teachers will discover what a valuable tool real-life contexts are for building a solid foundation in mathematics.

I teach math in a GED program for adults returning to school to finish their high school educations. I came across Where Do I Put... when I was looking for books to help students with paralyzing math anxiety. Of all the books I found on this subject in the library, this was by far the most user friendly and practical. Since then, I found a used copy that I have shared with many students and colleagues. One of them who calls this book "her Bible," gives it full credit for raising her GED math score by 25% and helping her to pass the test with flying colors. My only regret is that this book is out of print. I hope that the publisher (Avon Books) does something about that soon.

                              Book Description

"The initiated and the uninitiated . . . both will benefit from the selection and quality here." (New York Times Book Review)

"These stories constitute a lively-and sometimes tragic-history of a vanished civilization." (Chicago Tribune)

This marvelous collection of Yiddish classics, some never before translated into English, offers the full and wonderfully vivid panoply of shtetl life from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Written by such masters as Sholom Aleichem, Yisroel Aksenfeld, Mendele Moykher-Sforim, Yitzik Leyb Peretz, Rabbi Nakhman, and Der Nister, this unique collection includes not only early religious writings and engaging Hasidic yarns but also colorful stories of latter-day realism, fantasy, and satire. Humor and suffering, faith and rationalist parody, romantic love and sordid cruelty-a panorama of shtetl life unfolds before us, conjuring up all the colors of a vanished world.
