        Description:
The emission produced by sulfite induced autoxidation of Ni(II)/tetraglycine complex in the presence of luminol can be used to determine sulfite in the range of (0.0500-5.00)x10^-^6moll^-^1. The limit of detection is 2.8x10^-^8moll^-^1 and the relative standard deviation is 4.6% for 1x10^-^7moll^-^1 sulfite in five repeated measurements. This method has been successfully used for the determination of sulfite in wine, juices, white sugar and rainwater. The sulfite was extracted from the sample by using one gas-diffusion unit. Results for various samples of wine and juices were compared with those obtained by using a recommended procedure (correlation coefficient=0.9998,n=10), and recovery range for white sugar was between 99 and 104%. The mechanism involves a chain reaction with Ni(II) and radicals formations, which can then oxidize luminol.

            Description:
Climate-induced drought events have been shown to have a significant influence on sulphate (SO"4^2^-) export from forested catchments in central Ontario, subsequently delaying recovery of surface waters from acidification. Field and modelling studies have demonstrated that water table drawdown during drought periods promotes oxidation of previously stored (reduced) sulphur (S) compounds in wetlands, with subsequent efflux of SO"4^2^- upon re-wetting. Although climate-induced changes in processes are generally not integrated into soil-acidification models, MAGIC (Model of Acidification of Groundwater in Catchments) includes a wetland compartment that incorporates redox processes driven by drought events. The potential confounding influence of climate-induced drought events on acidification recovery at Plastic Lake, south-central Ontario (under proposed future S emission reductions) was investigated using MAGIC and two climate scenarios: monthly precipitation and runoff based on long-term means (average-climate scenario), and variable precipitation and runoff based on the past 20years of observed monthly data (variable-climate scenario). The variable-climate scenario included several periods of summer drought owing to lower than average rainfall and higher then average temperature. Nonetheless, long-term regional trends in precipitation and temperature suggest that the variable-climate scenario may be a conservative estimate of future climate. The average-climate scenario indicated good recovery potential with acid neutralising capacity (ANC) reaching approximately 40@mmol"cL^-^1 by 2020 and 50@mmol"cL^-^1 by 2080. In contrast, the forecasted recovery potential under the variable-climate scenario was very much reduced. By 2080, ANC was forecasted to increase to 2.6@mmol"cL^-^1 from -10.0@mmol"cL^-^1 in 2000. Elevated SO"4^2^- efflux following drought events (introduced under the variable-climate scenario) has a dramatic impact on simulated future surface water chemistry. The results clearly demonstrate that prediction of future water quality, using models such as MAGIC, should take into account changes or variability in climate as well as acid deposition.

              Description:
Secondary particulate organic matter (POM) formed in a flow reactor by the OH-radical-induced reactions of toluene was collected on quartz fiber filters, and its stable carbon isotope ratio was analyzed by off-line combustion and subsequent dual-inlet isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The toluene consumption in these experiments ranged from 7% to 29%. The stable carbon isotope composition (@d^1^3C) of the secondary POM was in the range of -32.2%% to -32.9%% (VPDB scale), with some indication for a slight dependence on the extent of toluene consumption. These measured @d^1^3C values were, on average, 5.8%% lighter than those of the parent toluene. Those observations are slightly lower than the @d^1^3C values of the sum of all toluene oxidation products (from -31.6%% to -32.3%%) that are predicted using the kinetic isotope effect for the reaction of toluene with OH-radical under these reaction conditions and the initial @d^1^3C of the parent toluene. Therefore, mass balance dictates that the fractionation between gas-phase and particle-phase products is small. On average, the particle-phase products are 0.6%%+/-0.2%% lighter than the gas-phase products. This is in agreement with the concept that the initial reaction of toluene with the OH-radical is the slowest step in the reaction sequence resulting in POM formation.

                  Description:
This study investigates if anaerobic digestion residues contain substances with negative impact on microbial processes in soil. Effects of residues and organic extracts of residues were assessed with two soil bioassays-substrate induced respiration (SIR) and potential ammonia oxidation (PAO). Laboratory incubations were performed, and residues from two lab-scale digesters and seven full-scale digesters, at different application rates, were mixed into agricultural topsoil. Additions of intact, dried residues displayed negligible effects on SIR and PAO, indicating that total microbial biomass and ammonia oxidising populations (AOB) were not affected by the amendments. However, removal of inorganic and particulate constituents in the residues by the extraction procedure rendered some of them inhibitory to PAO. Thus, substances inhibiting AOB were present in the anaerobic digestion residues, although generally they had minor effects on heterotrophic soil microorganisms.

                    Description:
We present a methodology for the quantitative use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the compositional characterization of nanoaerosols, using an internal standard. The approach involves finding the optimal laser delay time to collect spectra for each of the elemental species of interest, and measuring the plasma temperature, and background gas density under the same conditions. This enabled us to eliminate effects due to different experimental conditions, species excitation from different energy states, temporal evolution of the plasma volume itself and instrumental collection efficiencies and biases. We apply the method to the problem of determining the extent of oxidation or coating thickness of aluminum nanoparticles. The specific choice of system is based on a need to understand the nature of energetic properties of nano-materials and in particular the reactivity and stability of passivation coatings, such as metal oxides. The present work establishes LIBS as an effective analytical tool for quantitative estimation of the extent of oxidation in Al nanoparticles from time-resolved atomic emission spectra. More generically this approach of using the background gas as the internal standard mitigates the need for the use of materials standards and should be extendable to the characterization of other multi-component aerosol systems.

                      Description:
Simultaneously photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution in the presence of Fe(III)-OH complexes were investigated under a 250W metal halide lamp (@l>=365nm). Synergy effect of the simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation and reduction of both pollutants was achieved. The effects of initial pH value, initial concentration of BPA, Cr(VI) and Fe(III) were preliminarily investigated. The results showed that both photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of BPA could occur simultaneously in the Fe(III)/Cr(VI)/BPA ternary system, and the rates of photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and the oxidation of BPA were more rapid at a low pH range of 2.0-3.0. The increase of the initial concentration of Fe(III) was favorable to both photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and oxidation of BPA. The reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) decreased with increasing initial concentrations of Cr(VI) and BPA, but the degradation efficiency of BPA was not changed obviously at different Cr(VI) concentrations.

4 out of 5 stars The new face of Clifford Analysis.......2001-06-23

In this second volume of the Proceedings of the Ixtapa Conference on Clifford Algebras and Their Applications to Mathematical Physics, the editors have collected papers which reflect the latest developments in Clifford Analysis. It is fair to say that the authors of the contributions are virtually all the important names in the field, and the picture that the volume presents of Clifford Analysis indicates the vitality of the topic. Maybe the most important thing in this volume (what I called the "new face" of Clifford Analysis) is the clear sense that Clifford Analysis is now used as a powerful tool to solve classical problems which the standards tools from the analysis in Euclidean spaces could not solve. This evolution from a discipline concerned with its own (quite interesting) internal problems, to a discipline capable of addressing outstanding issues in geometry and analysis is the product of the work of many of the contributors to these Proceedings. The volume is divided in four sections. The first deals with partial differential equations and boundary value problems. I particularly appreciated the survey work on the study of Beltrami type equations in three dimensions. The second section deals with Singular Integral Operators, the third offers some important Applications to Geometry and Physics, and the volume concludes with a section on Mobius Transformations and Monogenic Functions. I have found the papers of great interest because they not only address important and difficult problems, but also provide the reader with a wide variety of new issues to deal with. The majority of the papers is rather technical, and probably only accessible to the specialist, but a few of them (including the one on Beltrami equations I mentioned before) provide a sense of the state of the art, which is of great help to the analyst or the geometer who wishes to enter this beautiful branch of mathematics.

This volume is an unusually inspired collection of papers by some of the most ingenious researchers in Clifford algebras. Since Clifford algebras and the closely related octonion and division algebras are themselves one of the most inspired and ingenious tools in mathematical physics, the reader of this volume cannot go wrong. It is important that mathematicians and physicists learn about Clifford algebras, regardless of their background. Clifford algebras, like most branches of algebra, have a remarkable simplicity that appeals to the researcher's intuition, and they also have a rigor and a logical development and categorization which is hard to beat in any other branch of mathematics. Clifford algebra goes one step beyond most algebras except perhaps Lie algebras and Grassmanian/tensor algebras in that it is applicable to geometry and geometric physics to a degree that is difficult to believe. For example, quaternions (a branch of Clifford algebra) are now being applied to aerospace and space exploration, as several important volumes recently published indicate. Chisholm in Great Britain, Pezzaglia in California, Hestenes in Arizona, Bayliss and Ackermann, Okubo, Benn, and numerous others have applied Clifford algebra to quantum theory (including quantum field theory and quantum gravity), general and special relativity, and so on. The algebra itself seems to lead researchers forward with less effort. Unlike vector analysis, which struggles with inner product and cross product formalisms which are hard to manipulate, Clifford algebras have a natural multiplication reminiscent of ordinary multiplication which cuts through most of the "red tape" of theoretical and applied physics. The reader should obtain a copy of every publication on Clifford algebras, octonions, Division Algebras, etc. As I have pointed out in another review, readers with poorer mathematical backgrounds can always hire consultants and even tutors to help them translate these remarkable treasures.

                          5 out of 5 stars Chisholm's Clifford Algebra book.......2000-03-29

This book and Dietrich's more recent book (reviewed by me in these reviews), together with volumes (edited) by Bayliss, Porteous, Okubo, Hestenes, and Benn, constitute a "minimum complete set" for understanding Clifford algebras and their applications to physics, although most researchers will want to supplement them with journal papers. Chisholm was one of the first to launch the new Clifford algebra revival that has been a major trend of the last dozen years. His selection of materials and papers in his volume is outstanding. His work subsequently expanded in numerous journal papers, of which he was kind enough to send me ten outstanding papers with his colleague R. Farwell. Three of the main centers of research in Clifford algebras are Great Britain (Chisholm, Farwell, etc.), Canada (Benn, etc.), the Eastern USA (Okubo and others), although Pezzaglia in California is "holding the fort alone" quite well. To repeat my advice in my reviews of other Clifford algebra and relativity and quantum theory books, the reader who does not have enough mathematical background should still obtain these volumes and consider hiring a tutor or consultant to translate the mathematics into ordinary English or an approximation thereof. To fail to understand Clifford algebras and their relatives is to fail to keep up with one of the most innovative research fields in the world.

                            Book Description

Loosely based on Goethe's personal experiences, the novel is written mostly in the form of letters in which Werther recounts his unrequited love for a married woman. Its Sturm und Drang style, portraying the rebellion of youthful genius against conventional standards, makes it a perennial favorite with readers of every era.
