Cellular Biophysics is a quantitatively oriented basic physiology text for senior undergraduate and graduate students in bioengineering, biophysics, physiology, and neuroscience programs. It will also serve as a major reference work for biophysicists.

Developed from the author's notes for a course that he has taught at MIT for many years, these books provide a clear and logical explanation of the foundations of cell biophysics, teaching transport and the electrical properties of cells from a combined biological, physical, and engineering viewpoint.

Each volume contains introductory chapters that motivate the material and present it in a broad historical context. Important experimental results and methods are described. Theories are derived almost always from first principles so that students develop an understanding of not only the predictions of the theory but also its limitations. Theoretical results are compared carefully with experimental findings and new results appear throughout. There are many time-tested exercises and problems as well as extensive lists of references.

The volume on transport is unique in that no other text on this important topic develops it clearly and systematically at the student level. It explains all the principal mechanisms by which matter is transported across cellular membranes and describes the homeostatic mechanisms that allow cells to maintain their concentrations of solutes, their volume, and the potential across the membrane. Chapters are organized by individual transport mechanisms -- diffusion, osmosis, coupled solute and solvent transport, carrier-mediated transport, and ion transport (both passive and active). A final chapter discusses the interplay of all these mechanisms in cellular homeostasis.

Very easy read.......2003-03-05

From Ion channels in the molecular Genetics of the arrhythmia to the moment you push a patients face in a bucket of ice to convert them, good stuff. So little is still known about AvNode Rentrant tachycardia, Atrial flutter, classic WPW, etc. that it's highly refreshing to see a text like this. We know about Long QT syndrome and the specific genes responsible for this, mostly, and now the ones that have been identified for WPW, but there is so much more to understand. Did the open heart cryoblations hold fast, years later? What are the lasting effects of radiofrequency ablations? We are still experimental in our understanding, yet so advanced. Pacemakers, ICD's, and proper conversion methods for each arrhythmia, the dreaded Adenocard, etc. so much to do and learn, still.

Environmental statistics is a rapidly growing discipline that is important not only as a division of professional and academic statistics, but also in the accumulation of data on environmental effects and in the formulation of environmental policy by government agencies.

Excellent Book.......2007-10-04

This is an excellent book. I am surprised because I don't usually like to read "instructional manuals." Mr. Murray has a very personal and friendly writing style, and I found myself drawn into the book as if it were an inviting novel. I highly recommend this book if you want to become a more efficient and effective writer.

Packed with advice for the budding writer.......2002-10-15

This was a very enjoyable book to read. The author leads you through the various ways and reasons to edit your work.

As I read the first chapter, I wished for a more compact version of these points, sort of a Cliff Notes approach. But Mr. Murray's expanded approach was certainly more enjoyable and personal.

Although the book is perhaps targeted to a more experienced writer, I underlined many points that I will refer to for help. A beginner might be over-whelmed with all the great techniques on revision, but just the first two chapters alone will yield a dramatic pay-back for his efforts.

The book is interspersed with interviews with other authors and their responses to the author's questions also provide useful information, and add credibility to his points.

"The Craft of Revision" captures the subject of the book. You'll learn more about revising your copy than you probably can use for a long time.

I highly recommend this book.

Title: Relevant, Engaging, Illuminating

Donald Murray's The Craft of Revision is consistently relevant, engaging in form, and illuminating in process.

"Take a piece of paper - or an empty computer screen - and brainstorm" (p7).
While other books of this genre will insist that the creative process must start with pen and paper, Murray understands the computer savvy writer!
Innovations:
* Draw computer trees to map the structure of a draft (p131)
* Turn the screen off while typing to discover natural voice (p182)
* Hear the diverse voices within modern computer manuals (p172-173)

"kegs of nails, prefab widows, piles of lumber" (p98).
The construction metaphor serves to depict the foundational nature of the revision process. Indeed, Murray's most favorite quote, repeated thrice within the volume, is that of Ernest Hemingway: "Prose is architecture not interior decoration" (xv; p38; p97). Murray will convince you that revising does not start with work-tweaking, nor with phrase choice. Rather, the bulk of the revision process is a reconsideration of the essentials:
* What is missing from the draft? (Feelings? Senses? Information?)
* Which alternate forms could be used to encapsulate the idea?
* Which other voice might be used to express the concept?

"The 2-3-1 principle" (p148)
Interior decoration is not entirely ignored, however. Once the building is constructed, Murray does provide guidance regarding particular word choice and paragraph structure.
For instance, the "2-3-1" principle (p148) indicates that the paragraph should start with the 2nd point of emphasis, continue with the 3rd point, and end with the primary one.
Murray himself follows this rule. Consider his three citations of Hemingway, noted above:
* In the preface, on page xv, Hemingway's dictum begins the paragraph. It is a fairly important point which prepares the reader for what is to come.
* On page 38, the Hemingway quote is brought as a side point, in the middle of a paragraph, as an aid to understanding some specific information regarding communication and reading.
* Finally, on page 97, Hemingway's aphorism not only concludes the paragraph, but also the chapter. According to Murray, this is the place for the primary point of emphasis. And indeed, this location immediately precedes the fullest exploration of the construction metaphor, at the start of chapter 6.
