    Book Description

In this book, the author presents a critical analysis of what is known about the olfactory sensory cells in both the nasal cavity and the vomeronasal organ: their structure, their connections in the main and accessory olfactory bulb, receptor biology, transduction mechanisms, cell replacement, developmental biology and plasticity. Also discussed are the trigeminal and terminal nerves in the nasal cavity. The book concludes with a section highlighting some of the gaps in our knowledge of olfaction and stresses the need for continued research. Although the emphasis is on mammalian olfaction, basic issues that have been addressed by research on other vertebrates and invertebrates are also discussed.

            Book Description

This volume is a sequel to the much-appreciated The Cauchy Method of Residues published in 1984 (also by Kluwer under the D.Reidel imprint). Volume 1 surveyed the main results published in the period 1814--1982. The present volume contains various results which were omitted from the first volume, some results mentioned briefly in Volume 1 and discussed here in greater detail, and new results published since 1982. It also contains short expositions, by various authors, dealing with new and interesting aspects of the theory and applications of residues.
This volume will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in complex analysis, and also physicists and engineers whose work involves the application of complex functions.

            Book Description

This is the first new full-scale anthology of Restoration and eighteenth-century drama in over sixty years. Concentrating on plays from the heyday of 1660-1737, it focuses especially on Restoration drama proper (1660-1688) and Revolution drama (1689-1714), with a smaller selection of plays from the early Georgian period (1715-1737) and a glimpse at the later Georgian period's "laughing comedy" (1770s and 80s). It includes nine sub-genres (heroic romance, political tragedy, personal tragedy, tragicomic romance, social comedy, subversive comedy, corrective satire, menippean satire, and laughing comedy), with the preponderance of exposure given to the jewel of this theatre, its comedy. The core canonical plays from the era - from Dryden's 'All for Love' and Behn's 'The Rover' to Congreve's 'The Way of the World' and Sheridan's 'School for Scandal' - are all here, but so are a remarkably wide range of non-canonical works. There are many more plays by women than in any previous general anthology of the drama of the period. Also included are a number of works from the neglected 1660s, whose comedies feature delightful, subversive, levelling folk elements. In all there are forty-one plays; each is fully annotated and prefaced with an historical introduction. Also included are a general introduction, head-notes for each genre, and a glossary.

5 out of 5 stars A broad selection of Restoration drama.......2006-03-07

This selection consists of nearly 2,000 pages of some of the best drama of the English Restoration, through the Glorious Revolution, and into the Georgian Period. The editors break up the works into categories, which are not always appropriate and are sometimes biased. The bulk of the book, however, consists of the works themselves along with brief introductions to the author and the play. The following plays are included in this selection:

"The History of Henry the Fifth" by Roger Boyle, First Earl of Orrery
            "Tamerlane" by Nicholas Rowe
"Lucius, The First Christian King of Britain" by Delarivier Manley
"The Unhappy Favorite" by John Banks

"She Stoops to Conquer" by Oliver Goldsmith
"The School for Scandal" by Richard Brinsley Sheridan

I recommend this book to Restoration and early eighteenth-century students. Theater troupes looking for unique plays may find this collection useful as well.

This new anthology is extremely valuable in its inclusion of not only the canonized texts from the period but other, more difficult to obtain, texts. Among the 41 full texts are expected plays by Dryden, Lillo, Behn, Sheridan, etc., but also historically important works such as Boyle's THE HISTORY OF HENRY THE FIFTH,plays by female authors including Pix, Trotter, Centlivre, and Cowley, and secondary texts by major authors incoluding Gay's POLLY,
Dryden's AMPHITRYON, and Behn's THE LUCKY CHANCE. Valuable organizational charts and introductions add to the usefulness. It is a joy to have all of these works in one volume.

                Book Description

When our great monarch into exile went, Wit and religion suffered banishment... At length the Muses stand restored again To that great charge which Nature did ordain. In these lines Dryden represents the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 as the restoration, too, of literary culture. If wit had been banished along with the exiled Charles, his return marked a flowering of a rich variety of genres after the turbulent years of the civil war and republic. This anthology brings together a stimulating and entertaining collection of works from this confident and creative period - a literature which is by turns refined, poignant, and brash. Alongside major works such as Dryden's Absalom and Achitophel and Mac Flecknoe, printed in their entirety, is a substantial group of lyrics by Rochester, while Milton's Paradise Lost provides a running commentary on the Restoration scene. Scurrilous satires and pamphlets, diaries, theatrical prologues, translations and striking work by women poets and autobiographers illustrate the period in politics, religion, philosophy and in attitudes to town and country, love and friendship. Anonymous works sit side by side with the great names - Marvell, Wycherley, Margaret Cavendish, Aphra Behn, John Evelyn and Samuel Pepys - while several poems are printed from manuscript sources for the first time, allowing us to hear new voices from a period famous for producing a thoroughly uninhibited literature.

                  Book Description

This edition offers an ideal introduction to the plays and theater of the late seventeenth century in England and France. It brings together key texts exploring the themes of sex, marriage and society. The English play texts are based on first editions, while those of the French texts are based on the earliest published translations. Textual notes explain unfamiliar terms, allusions and points of detail in the translations. A full introduction locates the plays in their cultural and political context and gives a comparative account of playhouses in London and Paris.

                      Book Description

Thomas Shadwell, The Libertine * George Etherege, The Man of Mode * Thomas Durfey, A Fond Husband * Thomas Otway, Friendship in Fashion These four plays in the Oxford English Drama series capture the range of responses to the fashionable and daring libertine movement in the second half of the seventeenth century. A Fond Husband and Friendship in Fashion are lesser-known comic gems of the Restoration stage; The Man of Mode is Etherege's masterpiece, and The Libertine is Shadwell's experimental and dark version of the Don Juan story. The texts are freshly edited using modern spelling. There is a critical introduction, wide-ranging annotation, and an informative bibliography which together illuminate the plays' cultural context and theatrical potential for reader and performer alike. 'The series should shape the canon in a number of significant areas. A splendid and imaginative project.' Professor Anne Barton, Cambridge University

                        Book Description

Sir George Etherege, William Wycherley and William Congreve introduce into their play-worlds major female characters who demand independence and equality from their male counterparts. This book focuses on each major female character who demands independence and equality of her gallant-libertine before she will commit to marriage or courtship with him. This demand for equality is a contrast to the social and marital relationships found in the real world of 17th century English Restoration society where marriage was a bargaining process for property and where the woman was treated as the man's property. Each of the three playwrights develops his virtuous women in a different way. Wycherley's approach to his characters, for instance, is quite different from that of Etherege and Congreve. But in each case, the playwrights present major female characters who prove themselves superior in wit and wisdom and thoroughly modern in their outlook.

Right, Restoration drama (1660-1700) is probably an acquired taste--even on the stage. So you would probably want to start your reading of Restoration drama with a more general anthology. But if you have a general understanding of the standard plays and want to know about significant plays by women, then this is the book for you. Includes the following: Aphra Behn, Sir Patient Fancy; Mary Griffith Pix, The Spanish Wives; Susanna Centlivre, A Bold Stroke for a Wife; Mercy Otis Warren, The Group; Frances Burney, The Witlings; Hannah Cowley, The Belle's Stratagem; Elizabeth Inchbald, Such Things Are.
