The book of ceramics.......2007-04-03
Introductions to ceramics by Kingery is the bible for ceramists. This book is more focused on the ceramic basic science and, apparently, it is a poor book for applications. However, Kyngery et al. teaches us the basic science we all need to know to be able to work on ceramics. It is difficult to work on ceramics if the basic knowledge taught by this book is unknown.
Ages like fine wine!.......2005-10-27
Having received a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, I have read most, if not all, of the required reading at the graduate and undergraduate levels. This book is one of a few that remain on my bookshelf and that I continually refer to.
The beauty of this book is that despite its age (published 1976), it remains relevant and represents a rare classic. Even though the price tag is hefty, it is well worth the investment. It is hugely comprehensive and well written.
This is a must-have for anyone in the Materials field.
Better than stock.......2005-08-11
This is one of classic textbooks in materials science courses throughout the US. Used and taught in ceramics classes at both the undergrad and grad level, it covers all the major topics in the field: thermodynamics, crystal structures and defects, different properties of ceramics such as superconduction, piezoelectricity, ferromagnetism, etc... Each chapter includes a few homework problems that can be worked out by hand.
The book is also better than stock; its sale price is always going up.
The Ceramics Bible.......2003-07-28
This is a tour-de-force textbook that covers the fundamental science behind ceramics and glass. And to the extent that the same energy equations (for kinetics, thermodynamics, stress and strain, defects, light transmission, grain boundaries, etc) apply to other inorganic materials, this book is an understandable reference for them too. It was the bible at MIT for Ceramics Mat Sci BS and MS students. Well indexed, a usable teaching and reference book.
An excellent reference book for undergrads in Mat Sci.......1999-12-08
This book is an excellent introduction to Ceramics. But, as an added bonus, it also comprehensively covers most of the topics in the Materials Science undergradute curriculum making it an excellent reference book.
Book Description
An Introduction to Glass Science and Technology presents the fundamental topics in glass science and technology including glass formation, crystallisation and phase separation. A detailed discussion of glass structure models with emphasis on the oxygen balance model is also presented. Additional chapters discuss the most important properties of glasses, including physical, optical, electrical, chemical and mechanical properties, and new to this edition, water in glasses and melts. Glass technology is addressed in chapters dealing with the details of glass raw materials, melting and fining, and commercial glass production methods. This expanded second edition also includes new chapters on the compositions and properties of commercial glasses and thermal analysis of glasses and melts. Exercises are included at the end of the chapters.
This introductory text is ideal for undergraduates in materials science, ceramics or inorganic chemistry. It will also be useful to the engineer or scientist seeking basic knowledge of the formation, properties and production of glass.

A complete review of the mechanical behavior of ceramics.......2000-03-24
Green gives a very thorough and comprehensive introduction to the mechanical behavior, fracture mechanism and structural characterization of ceramics. As an industrial scientist, this book has greatly helped me in understanding the origin of failure in various materials and optimizing the microstructure of the ceramic to improve its mechanical properties. Figures and photos are concise and illustrative. The comprehension exercices at the end of the book could be helpful to the student I once was.

Book Description
Ceramic materials that are specially developed for use as medical and dental implants are termed bioceramics. They include alumina and zirconia, bioactive glasses, glass-ceramics, coatings and composites, hydroxyapatite and resorbable calcium phosphates, and radiotherapy glasses. This is the first textbook in a field which is growing rapidly in clinical applications including orthopedics, otolaryngology, maxillo-facial and plastic surgery, oral surgery, periodontology, and tumor therapy. Fourteen chapters, written by world experts, describe the processing, compositions, properties, surface chemistry, tissue response, and clinical applications. There are also chapters on characterization and quality assurance testing, and the procedures that must be followed to satisfy regulatory requirements. A forecast of the future needs of the field and Appendices that summarize the relevant standards and test methods complete this unique book. The purpose of the book is to summarize and synthesize the very large and disparate body of literature in the field. Thus, it is easy to use as a textbook for an undergraduate or first year graduate course, or short industrial course, or as a reference source.
Customer Reviews:
Not Recommended.......2000-04-01
This book is disjointed and research oriented, more like the proceedings of a conference than a text book. It also has a very biased feel and is somewhat of an advertisement for the editors' invention, Bioglass(R). My resources would have been better spent conducting a thorough search of the technical journal literature.

essential.......2006-08-15
If your work involves particles, you need this book. Particles could be concrete, or copier toner, or flour or zinc oxide nanowires, if you take the time to read this book, you'll be able to do a dozen new things with your humble particles. Disperse them in fluids, measure their sizes, control their zeta potential, cast them into molds, press them in to dies, sinter them into a brick, you name it.
Jim's book has been with me for 10 years, and I still use it almost every week.

Book Description
Models of dynamical systems are of great importance in almost all fields of science and engineering and specifically in control, signal processing and information science. A model is always only an approximation of a real phenomenon so that having an approximation theory which allows for the analysis of model quality is a substantial concern. The use of rational orthogonal basis functions to represent dynamical systems and stochastic signals can provide such a theory and underpin advanced analysis and efficient modelling. It also has the potential to extend beyond these areas to deal with many problems in circuit theory, telecommunications, systems, control theory and signal processing. Nine international experts have contributed to this work to produce thirteen chapters that can be read independently or as a comprehensive whole with a logical line of reasoning: Construction and analysis of generalized orthogonal basis function model structure; System Identification in a time domain setting and related issues of variance, numerics, and uncertainty bounding; System identification in the frequency domain; Design issues and optimal basis selection; Transformation and realization theory. Modelling and Identification with Rational Orthogonal Basis Functions affords a self-contained description of the development of the field over the last 15 years, furnishing researchers and practising engineers working with dynamical systems and stochastic processes with a standard reference work.

Book Description
In the roadless Brooks Range Mountains of northern Alaska sits Anaktuvuk Pass, a small, tightly knit Nunamiut Eskimo village. Formerly nomadic hunters of caribou, the Nunamiut of Anaktuvuk now find their destiny tied to that of Alaska’s oil-rich North Slope, their lives suddenly subject to a century’s worth of innovations, from electricity and bush planes to snow machines and the Internet. Anthropologist Margaret B. Blackman has been doing summer fieldwork among the Nunamiut over a span of almost twenty years, an experience richly and movingly recounted in this book.
A vivid description of the people and the life of Anaktuvuk Pass, the essays in Upside Down are also an absorbing meditation on the changes that Blackman herself underwent during her time there, most wrenchingly the illness of her husband, a fellow anthropologist, and the breakup of their marriage. Throughout, Blackman reflects in unexpected and enlightening ways on the work of anthropology and the perspective of an anthropologist evermore invested in the lives of her subjects. Whether commenting on the effect of this place and its people on her personal life or describing the impact of “progress” on the Nunamiut—the CB radio, weekend nomadism, tourism, the Information Superhighway—her essays offer a unique and deeply evocative picture of an at once disappearing and evolving world.
